Bryce and Mulls chat to legendary Kiwi sailor Peter Burling ahead of the Sail GP this weekend!
This is a podcast from Rover
The Morning Rumble podcast the blistered heel of radio podcast
Three times America Cup winning Helmsman triple Olympic medalist in the 49ers pistol Pete
He's racing in the in the black foils the sale GP. It's having an Auckland this weekend. So today and Sunday Peter Berlin
Get a mate. Hey Pete. Hey guys. How's it going? It's quite a good intro for the fact that we just found out that you were coming in a few minutes ago
Bad mate. Got a brought you stuff that welcome back to New Zealand. Hey, thank you. It's cool to be home
It feels like it's been a bit of summer last couple of weeks the first first bit I was back was pretty wet
But uh, yeah, it's so good to be how yeah like how often are you home given your schedule?
You know, you've always had the Olympics. You've always had America's Cup and last few years you've had Saudi P
Like how often are you home?
Not a whole heap at the moment to be honest
So I've kind of hanging out over the summer and then basing up in Europe. Well, we got 14 events
Season in Saudi peace. It makes it pretty tough if you're traveling back down down here every every single event
So it's odd to to base up a up away for the European legs and yeah, it's been awesome
And so obviously this weekend big event that we're talking about the
The sale GP this weekend great to have it back in New Zealand as well
For those who have never seen it or been to an event
Can you talk us through like what it actually how it goes? How long the races are? How many teams?
Yeah, so the sale GP
Of
Pre basics to start off with we're all in one design boat
So if 50s falling catamarrings big wing sail. Yeah, super fast
So what sort of speeds get it for speeds around
Think of our peaks about 104 now. So 54 knots something like that
100 over 100 K now in the water. It's a pretty quick if you think you you go along your tinny and you're kind of bouncing away
Not to something pretty two and a half times. That's
Um, and then yeah, 13 boats this season. So one more than last
Um, and we race we have a official practice on Friday. So yeah tomorrow you'll see us out there buzzing around and then
Um, yeah race day Saturday Sunday. So about eight four four races a day
I'm real red now tell me um Perth didn't go well. Uh, what happened in Perth?
They said that the New Zealand team your team to blame, but yeah, it's just this as far
Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha-ha. What happened? Yeah, I didn't still don't quite see idle out of the umpiles on me
I don't want to eat you've got all with that. You've got a um, you know, just move on every now and then
But yeah, we had a big crash with the swiss and the first race of the season, which uh, it was an ideal um
So yeah, took both of us out of the race weekend
though we kind of lost about a meter off the back of our boat
So it's a little bit of a time run to get the um Magoda back up and running for this weekend and the Tech team's done an awesome job with that
So
Yeah, for us, definitely glad everyone was safe after the incident and obviously a shame not to get that racing underway in the beginning of the season, what looked like some awesome conditions.
What's it like racing in New Zealand? I mean, obviously it's back in Auckland, it has been down a little, a little dinner, I believe.
Yeah, I have a question just on top of York, if I can't tell you.
Why don't you just come on top of my question?
Why don't you add something to the back of that?
To add to his question, what I'm saying is all water the same.
You know, like when you're in different parts of the world, it's just elaborate on what you're trying to say.
Yeah, yeah, sure.
It sounds like a dumb question, but it's not because conditions are conditions.
Yeah.
So that's why I actually had already just asked that, but he just came in with the exact same question.
The thing is you can't choose the conditions either, you know, the conditions just trope.
Are they the same here?
Uh, it's water the same.
Yeah, I wouldn't say water's the same.
You know, some places have actually raced in fresh water, so that's a little bit different.
Oh, different temperatures make a bit of a difference.
Uh, and see, see states, probably the biggest change for us.
Um, you know, you can get a bit of bump in the harbor there when against tide or like some places we go,
you get swell as well, so that makes it a bit different.
But any wildlife, what's the best wildlife you've seen when doing, uh, the cell GP?
We're all going too fast.
We normally try and stay away from the wildlife to be honest.
Um, yeah, because it's a little bit scary if there's, you know,
races have been stopped and stuff for that, haven't they?
Yeah, yeah, it was, um, I mean, really cool in the little tin, where a lot of dolphins around,
but, um, made a little bit hard to get racing underway.
We're all a bit nervous, um, both for the boats and the mammals to be honest.
Um, true, you know, they're pretty fragile bits of kits that you want to look after both both sides.
Yeah, you obviously spend a heap of time in the water, um, as we know,
what do you do for fun outside of it?
Like when you're not working with you, you pick out on the water.
Yeah, like are you a keen fisherman?
Are you actually your own recreational boat?
What do you do?
Uh, I don't own a recreational boat at the moment, but yeah,
I really enjoy getting out there for, you know, going spear fishing or fishing or just hang out.
A lot of do a lot of surfing, a lot of foiling.
So you do just spend all you get straight back on the water.
I wouldn't say all my free time, but yeah, a lot of my hobbies resolve revolve around,
yeah, you know, getting back out there.
And I mean, it's so much fun, right?
Like you kind of, yeah, anyone that's really into surfing, yeah.
The whole foiling buzz that's kicked off as well is really opened up.
So I'll now, now the side of the sport.
So it's been super, but you can evolve with it.
Are you a hot cross-bung guy?
Traditional or what are you?
Yeah, traditional, because I know Bryce hates them, but he, it's the reason thing in it.
We can get it, we can get it.
We can see it on the way in this morning.
So I'm kind of back on the,
food level back up.
So I can, I could distribute those out well around it.
Yeah, good, good.
Hey, um, you are a product of Todonga Boys, is that right?
Yeah, yeah.
And so obviously there's been a lot of other famous athletes that have come from that school
when we talk of like Sam Canes and Williamson, etc.
This goes on.
And then at the moment, Sam Ruth, now have you been keeping an eye on what's been happening
with Sam Ruth, the young 16-year-old runner that is just doing unbelievable things?
Can't even be at school at the moment, because I feel well he's going.
Yeah, I haven't had the chance to meet him yet, but I mean,
seeing from afar, I don't believe it.
What he's managing to retrieve, you know, it's, I mean, just makes you proud to be a Kiwi, right?
Seeing a young Kiwi's put that kind of before.
Where does Dad on last week, because Dad was a legend too,
his dad went to school at the same time, I was at the same school.
And he was a weapon in school days, but obviously nothing on the level of what is young
sonners, he just said it's been unreal to watch.
Yeah, yeah.
Is it something about Todonga Boys?
Yeah, what is the chain there?
I mean, you've had Jay Reeve come out of there, that's obviously...
First, it's not all good.
Yeah, not everything works.
Yeah, you can look at it good or bad with it, you know?
Yeah.
Not bad, he keeps you guys company.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, now he's a man.
It's pretty cool.
We've actually taken cane for a seldom, right?
Williamson.
So it'd be cool, like, obviously, I talked a lot about what we do with sport,
but we cool to show him what we actually do, so yeah, that would be really sick,
connect with an old buddy from school, and then...
Were you guys mates at school?
Yeah, so my last year of school, he was a head boy in our sports captain.
That's amazing.
We both didn't have the best attendance record to be fair.
I think both our deputies did probably three quarters of the job, but...
But where are they?
Not bad, don't know.
Well, you like it, cricket?
Absolutely, terrible.
Ah, okay.
Cricket wasn't my forte.
Ah, yeah.
But nearly all my mates played, so...
Yeah, right, there you go.
There you go.
You obviously are also really well-known for, it's been well said,
and I'm sure you seek the punishment of your cam and unwraffled demeanor
and all of that sort of thing.
What, when do you find stress?
What stresses you?
Is it driving?
Is it traffic?
Is it, like, it's Valentine's Day on the weekend?
Is it something like having to think of how to be romantic for that?
Like, what situations actually put you up in pressure?
You still have been quite sort of the Valentine's plans,
so I might need a few tips from you guys on now.
I've got some hook cross buns.
I'm not sure the hot cross buns are going to get me across the line.
I think that'll be good with the, you know, the lads, but I'm not sure I'll control it.
I dropped off a, you know, pack a hot cross buns of the...
Does anything stress you, though?
Like, are you...
Ah, do you, or are you...
I think, for me, it's a lot of, you know, when...
What's controllable or what's not.
And so many of the times when you're in a stressful situation,
you've got to make a reasonably good decision straight off the back of it,
so you kind of...
You've got to keep yourself in a place where, you know,
you're going to make a good next decision.
Yeah.
I mean, you definitely get stressed.
You definitely...
I think you want a bit of adrenaline as well.
There's always this misdemeanor of you should just stay,
like, completely zoned out the whole time.
Well, that's what they say.
All life.
Kane was, like, early on in his career and through his career.
He was unflapable.
Yeah.
He was the same demeanor as his captain.
Yeah.
But I think you...
I mean, even talking to him, you know, you want to...
You want to use a bit of that energy.
Yeah.
Like, not have it completely changed what you're doing.
You know, everyone's in a...
Has their sweet spot.
Like, you can be as kind of...
Some people love being super hyped up and...
Yeah.
But jumpy.
Yeah.
But jittery going into things and they relax into it and go well
or other people love, you know, being full opposite.
You know, for me, I can definitely be too relaxed or too hyped up.
But, you know, finding a good medium in the middle.
What's the key to winning then this weekend?
Because is it staying out of the way if everybody else,
which is incredibly hard to do on, of course,
that's pretty compact for...
Sal boats.
Well, looking at the forecast, if you don't have some tickets,
I think the Grandstand's going to be pretty epic spot to watch from.
Yeah.
Still a few tickets left.
It's looking like a windy southerly.
So we'll be starting reaching straight at the Grandstand
and then kind of...
I suppose, short side of the harbour.
You know, we obviously do the race course upwind downwards.
We're kind of racing across rather than...
a bit of long ways.
So it's going to be pretty intense for sure.
So, yeah, there will definitely be an element of, you know,
keeping the boats apart, keeping the boat in one piece.
And then in Sal GP format, you've just got to make the top three
and then it's shoot out of those top three in like 10 minutes
to decide the podium.
So, yeah, we all about making it to that top three
and then putting your best foot forward in the last race.
Mate, looking forward to it.
And we appreciate you coming in as well.
Yeah, last minute.
Thank you.
You decided to come in to talk to us.
We bloody appreciate it.
We bloody appreciate it.
You're a generous.
It's always great to have you in and wish you well for the rest of the year, mate.
Awesome.
No, thanks a lot, mate.
Thanks a lot.
Good luck.
Check them out as well.
If in fact, if you text, we can make this up.
Hopefully, it works.
If you text Sale to 3520, we'll flick you back a link of how to get some
of the remaining tickets to head along.
It's happening in Auckland this weekend, Saturday and Sunday.
Sale GP, Peter Burling.
Thank you, mate.
Thank you, Peter.
Thanks, guys.
Thanks, mate.
