We are doing to do two more episodes to round out this season because, you know, you don't care as much about long term analysis right now, as you do about, should I just start this picture for the final few matchups? That's all we're going to do. We're going to go day by day. This episode right now is just going to tackle this weekend, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the 18th, 19th and 20th. And then Nick and I will be back on Monday to give you the start and sits over the final week of the season. This is going to match a little bit with Nick's article where we have the auto starts, the probable starts, questionable starts, do not starts, et cetera. To keep this in a nice time frame and also not waste anybody's time, we're not going to analyze the auto starts. Their auto starts for a reason. We will tell you who Nick's auto starts are. We'll go over the probable starts and talk about why they're kind of like on the fringe, but the bigger things that we'll go over to

5:07are the questionable starts, the ones that might be highly rostered guys who we wouldn't use in these particular matchups or the guys on the fringes that, hey, maybe that's not a 12 team, but it's a 15. Maybe if you need strikeouts, you can use this guy. Maybe if you're chasing wins, you can use this guy. This is going to be kind of a little more like rigid, cut and dry and not so much long term analysis. We're just trying to make it as useful for you as possible. Over the final week of the season. Exactly. Yeah, we just want to give that quick answer. And of course, inside of our discord, I'm answering a ton right now. I get tagged a ton, and I'm okay with it because I get it. So let's get you that championship. But Friday is today, Eric, we're going to make sure we get this out early so that you can get this information. Yes. And Friday is today. It has two auto starts.

6:12Tyler Glass now against the Giants. Cade Cavali against the Cardinals. He has launched himself into auto start territory, especially in that matchup. The probable starts. I'm going to list all of them off. And then we're going to go through not all of them, but some of the ones that need discussion. So all of the probable starts. We've got Dylan Seas at Texas, Garrett Cole at the Diamond Backs. Brian Wu at the Rockies, Paul Schienz against the Royals, Ian Seymour against the Red Sox, Rain, Rainhaar Suarez against the Raise, Tyler Malley against the Astros, Dustin May against the Orioles, Eduardo Rodriguez against the Yankees and Peter Lambert against the Braves. To me, I think Seas, Cole Wu, they've all been pitching well enough right now. The matchups are good, even though Wu's in Colorado. We don't really need to go into detail on that. So I do have to say one thing. I know you don't mean. I mean, really, it's that Brian Wu is pitching better than the other two. And I really don't feel like I kind of want to just put him in the Ace is going to ace anyway, but fine cores, I get it. Garrett Cole is not locating his breakers well at all. And he has not

7:18returned strikeouts lately. And I got I lost my playoffs because I needed him to get about 12 strikeouts for the week. And I got eight. And that was it. You know, so in two starts, that is. And while Dylan sees two ticks down on his velocity. And we saw in the last start, yes, he did survive. I mean, nine strikeouts in five innings, one and run, but it was nine base runners. And that is because it's not 94.9, which is very strange. And that could continue to decline. So it is riskier than we want it to be. I don't know the entire season. You want to look at that and just go, oh, Dylan sees, of course, I'm going to start him. But there are scenarios where you might actually want to bench Dylan sees if it's not a strikeout necessity. Sure. And the at Texas thing is helpful. It's it's a not a tremendous lineup. It's a good pitching park. I think that helps for C's. There are some writers here in New York that have suggested that Garrett Cole maybe shouldn't be on the Yankees wild card roster that going with that going with Schliitler Frieden Rodon is actually I agree with that. I actually agree with that statement. And I would

8:21say that you should still be there because I would think he's better than a reliever. Like, sure, he is your backup reliever. You know, more so than we'll warn in that sense in my view. Like you would be able to have him push it while we're down, by the way, you could even argue in the same vein because he's someone who ramps up in a start. And that means he has more in the tank than he shows early on. So you could see that 96 97 if you really want later on the game, you see the landing on the game in a relief role for one or two innings. So I get that that he's not the premier starter. Should be Schliitler Frieden and then one of free maybe piggyback of Rodon and Cole. I get that. Mally and Edwara Rodriguez seem to just kind of be like the matchups aren't great, but they're both pitching well enough that it's hard to remove them from your line-ups right now given the level that they're playing. They're absolutely. I mean, it's the same thing with Peter Lambert as well. I know that he's, you know, it's not been as sharp necessarily lately, but he's still doing his thing and Lancer is not the greatest offense anymore. Yeah, they're

9:24struggling. And there's also Dustin May, who's been one of the most unlucky pitchers. I've gone over this many a time, but I mean, there's one where he allowed a thing, I want to say like five runs or something like that where one of them was above 80 EV on it. And I was like, what is this? And then you have the comebacker on one pitch to remove him from the game and then a rain delay. It's ridiculous. And you have Jackson Holiday out on lineup of course because he's on the aisle now. Tyler Malley is just being good. I mean, it's really one of those cases where he's one of my favorite kinds of pitchers in fantasy where you see someone make a change and actually look good and have good command and you can see the pitch separation. You can see it all there. It's all working and everyone wants to ignore it because oh, it's Tyler Malley, but whatever that's a name, it's not the most exciting lines, but these are effective and good situations. And we were able to pick this up and go for it. Now he's at 50% rostered, but this is when we was at 3% rostered. I have made it over 100 streaming victories this year, by the way, Eric. And that's always my goal every single year.

10:27I'm at 101. Tyler Malley is the thank for a lot of those earlier on. So yeah, definitely Tyler Malley got a role with that one too. And then Ian Seymour against the Red Sox. The Red Sox offense has been slumping significantly of late. And I would assume it's a very, very, very, very strong likelihood. There is no Wilson Contreras in the lineup tonight because he got hit in the hand last night. He talked about being out for a day, a week, or even 10 days, which he said that himself, which is not the words of somebody who's likely going to be in the lineup on Friday. I think that raises the floor for Ian Seymour a little bit. And the matchup was already pretty good. Right in here, Suarez against Tampa Bay. At this point, you just know who he is and you know who the raise are. And that's why it could be fine. It could be four runs and six innings. We don't, it's unclear, but it's a fine spot, not an amazing spot. Yeah, exactly. Yeah. Questionable start tier. We are not going to go into everybody. I do want to highlight just a few.

11:31Nick Paveta is here against the Marlins. And I think people will see Paveta and they'll see the Marlins and say, why is this a questionable start? And correct me if I'm wrong, but my reading on it is just Paveta has, he's gone long enough since he's come back that he can pick up a win here. But the whiffs are not there. And he's allowing a lot of hard contact. And maybe this is a situation where he does get you a win. But he also allows three runs and five innings and strikes out two. And you're kind of like, it's not a great line. But if you need a win, I do think Paveta will go five in this one. And I think that he could be usable if all your chasing is wins. Yeah, no, I understand that. I am a little bit weird out that Nick Paveta returned one whiff in what 63 pitches or something like that. And that's not right. So I understand if you're chasing wins, it's actually not as high of a chance as I would want it to be because, okay, is he going to be

12:34able to be that efficient through five innings again? If you see one whiff, that essentially says that you are getting weak enough contact to get through the intungs, right? You're reliant on balls and play as opposed to just overall dominance. And that is a little concerning if you are on if you're on a pitch kind of, you can see both ways, I guess actually. I take that back because, yeah, that means you're getting balls in place or you're not going to waste them. You're not going to have 75 pitches trying to get the two strikes and starting to guy out and everything, extending them like you're going to get the balls in play. But I don't know. It's why it's questionable start. I don't think he's dominant at the moment, Nick Paveta. The sweeper was really kind of non-existent. The curve ball wasn't doing a ton. The four seamer is fine. Yeah, it's not great. And Joey Cantillo, I'm curious if they are going to have an opener or not. I think they are today and the four Cantillo. And that worked out last time. Yes, it's starting and then Cantillo's after. And that was killing it last year. Yeah. That made me feel good about Cantillo. Again,

13:35if you're chasing wins because I do think the guardians have a good shot to win this one against the athletics at home. And so if you're chasing wins, Cantillo behind an opener is nice. I also like I think Connor Prelipp has a decent shot at a win. He's been super inconsistent, but he's been going five. I do think the angels are a really bad team. I think the twins are a better team than the angels. It is a role of the dice for sure. I think the potentially the best bet for a win here and the questionable start tier is Clay Holmes. The reds, you know, I think that I know it's in Great American ballpark. It's just a team that's been really disappointing. Clay Holmes has been pitching deep enough into games that the win chance will be there. The cubs are obviously a far better team than the reds. What you get from Clay Holmes is a total question mark. There's been like, I think three really good starts and two poor starts within

14:36his last five. And so it's super inconsistent. But if you're chasing wins, I do think that Clay Holmes has a decent shot at a win on Friday. Yeah, no, I understand that you're also going against Chase Burns plus Brandon Williamson. So I actually took the I took the liberty of taking a kind of Kyle Leahy and Chase Burns out of the streaming ranks instead of putting them in because I understand people want to favor those as they're more interesting for their three innings or so. But really the value lies in Cooper, her jame. Are jerky jerky? I think it's jerky. It's jerky. Okay, and I'm Brandon Williams. I'm sorry, Connor, where they are actually going to be in position or at least finishing the fifth and all likelihood. So there is more obvious value in that. But yeah, Brandon Williamson is not a guy that I trust against the cubs in Great American Small Park. Thus, yes, Clay Holmes, I do understand. The thing about the Adobe Clay Holmes is it's ground ball focus, love sinkers. And yes, I does prevent the home run. But he's still he's still someone that is

15:41not as efficient as you want. And that can limit the win ceiling. You have Zach Thorin also in here who's somehow gone like six innings so many times with a foreseeable encounter. And he should get more lefties this time around because it is the Phillies. So you should see like Schwarber, for example, Harper, et cetera. I do worry that like this is going to be more of the eye opening start of Oh, no, Connor, sorry, Zach Thorne isn't that good. And who knows, I don't know, four Seamer Cutters induced the winoff we contact to get out so far fine, but I don't really want to do it. I have to put him as my stream pick of the day, I guess I might move Connor Preel up actually above Zach Thorne and make him my stream pick of the day instead. We'll see. Randy Domneck and David Sandlin round this out. I moved up Randy Domneck from do not start into this one because I do recognize even though I make the comparison of the uncle who used to play wreck league slinging with the beer in his left hand. It can work for five plus innings. I get it. It's also the pirates. He's done a fair

16:42number of times at this point that Rob Randy Domneck could be of service fine. David Sandlin, I think it's cool. He's not polished. It's something we don't know what we're going to get, but we did see two straight times where he came up and returned and showed up and he had a good start. But what we saw last time is the MLB debut and then it wasn't good after this time it's called up. It's all right, but is it going to be the same story? I don't know. So they're at the bottom of the question. We'll start. We're going to move on to the do not starts here. I'll just I'm just going to read them off. If there's anything that you feel like you need to mention, go for it, but Cade Povitch, we just talked about Cooper's Yurpee and Brandon Williamson who are kind of like piggybackers or followers. Grayson Rodriguez against the twins. Kumar Rocker against the Blue Jays. Say's our Predomo against the Dodgers Andrew Sears against the White Sox. Tyler Phillips against the Padres. Alan Alan Rand Hell against the Metz Mason Barnett against the Guardians and Ryan Feltner against the Mariners are in the do not start here. Yeah, so it's something to note with

17:46this is like Ryan Feltner. You can't trust Mason, Brennan fine. Now above those, it's always weird with do not start is just that there are there are possibilities that a lot of these work in some way, right? And I'm just like, okay, the percentage is just too low for me to go for it. But Kumar Rocker is someone that has gone strikeouts with sliders underneath the plate. A lot underneath his own rather. Grayson Rodriguez, I think is still kind of interesting, but I think it's more of a young gun kind of thing if he does figure out how to throw that 88 mile per hour cutter slash slider for a strike and actually make that work. You have Jirby, which I actually think is I'm kind of tempted to roll with because he's a side armor with a negative two arm angle who has some vert like at the arm angle, it's more impressive with the force humor. If he can throw strikes against the nationals, that actually might work out. Kate Povitch, we actually have seen him go five six innings and be decent already this year, but the brewers are a little bit stronger and a little bit more. I don't know if I want to mess with it. It's kind of like an average offense, not like the worst. So those are some of the options that are available. We already talked

18:49about Brandon Williamson, Caesar Perdomo. Maybe he's a swatch that can pull it off like he did against the Met's, even though it's the Dodgers, they don't have Otani, right? Andrew Sears doesn't do enough. I think he's interesting, but we don't really know how long I'll go. And Tyler Phillips, despite having some moments, he's just not really doing enough for you. So those are all the options. Oh, Alan Randhal, opener, but like he barely goes like three innings or so. You don't really want to do that. Yes, do not do that. Despite the fact that you might want to pick on the Met's. What you do want to do is stick around here because we're going to go into Saturday's starts after this. I did just want to read this stat because you know that I enjoy the Red Sox, but also because Peyton Toley is just one of my general favorite human beings going right now. And there was a stat that Peyton Toley is the first pitcher in their rookie season to I'm finding it right now Peyton Toley is the first pitcher in the in his rookie season to throw at least 140 innings have a strikeout rate over 27% and a walk rate on at 7% or under in the history. You know what's so crazy about Peyton Toley. I remember this time last year we're like, okay, who do we like more Peyton Toley or Connolly Early? I was very much on the Connolly Early train. Why? Because I just felt he was safer. I felt like he was he had a wider arsenal of

24:01south ball benefits, all that kind of stuff had, you know, above average POV marks on everything, et cetera. And you have Peyton Toley who had an unreal forceymer, but wasn't really putting together everything else was inconsistent with locations, et cetera. And it's one of those examples of all right, you can trust the stuff, you can trust the command. And Toley obviously improved. I mean his strike rates have been like 70% across the board overall this year, which is insane. Like that is an amazing jump forward for Peyton Toley. And I think the lesson that I'm trying to take away from this is if you have a forceymer that is so far in a way your best pitch. And the question is, all right, are you going to throw enough strikes where the strike rate wasn't like 50% for Peyton Toley's forceymer last year. Then I'm going to I should be weighing that stronger than I was before because really Peyton Toley needs to just fix the sinker

25:03in the cutter a little bit and honestly just throw the more like his forseamer and do nothing else just change the grip slightly. And that's it. Because this is this was a miss by me of not being harder into Peyton Toley and considering him more of an cherry bomb slash chips there of just inconsistency where he just wasn't that. Yeah. So huge props to him. To me, this will jive with we talked about this before we started recording that I'm going to do an article in the offseason on like why some young pictures like campshletler and jake mizurowski took the step forward we were expecting and other young pictures like uri Perez didn't take that step forward. My assumption from my preliminary scanning of this I have not yet really dug into the research but my assumption is going to be that a lot of it comes down to command and that uri Perez Treasavage even before the injury were not guys with with real command and we thought mizurowski wasn't or that wasn't the book on him coming up as a prospect. And Peyton Toley

26:08would be another one who took a real step forward this year because the command got significantly better. And part of my Arizona fallee or Arizona falling part of my first picture is owner presentation is going to be on are we thinking about command wrong and what I'm really looking at in that presentation is going to be what are the stats what are the metrics what are we actually what matters when we're talking about commands because we talk about zone rate we talk about strike rate we talk about like swinging strike rate it's like does it actually matter that I'm throwing pitches in the strike zone does it more matter that I'm getting more strikes does it matter what count I'm getting those strikes matter what made the second strikes early yeah does it matter does it matter like across the sections does does command matter and bottom strikes things like that so I'm hoping to have a lot of really good data that after first picture is owner we can do our own little podcast and talk about that but I think that my guess is that's going to be a lot of why

27:12you'll see Camsel Hitler and Peyton Toli in this auto start tier and they made those jumps because of how they they fill up the zone yeah so I will say uh eerie Paris is actually an argument against what I just said because this force him was amazing and he didn't have command right and that was the question that we had yeah but there likely is something that you found that is more about paying Toli um having a better reign on his uh forcing more than eerie Paris and we will talk about eerie Paris later because he does come up in this uh in this day but he's not in the probable start tier which is Trevor Rogers against Milwaukee Jackson Joe begins the white socks Calc control against the blue jays Freddie Peralta against the red socks Sean Burke against the Tigers Christian Scott against the Phillies Andrew painter against the Met and Michael McGreevy against the Nationals um Trevor Rogers here I just want to it's the Brewers um then I will just say

28:14the Brewers on Thursday's game sat all of Christian Yelich William Contreras Jake Bauer's Cooper Pratt like the Brewers have clinched there are going to be games during the during this final week where the Brewers just go all right we're going to sit some guys and uh that's just something where like you just got to keep an eye on that when the lineups come out and really check any starting pitcher going against the Brewers that's not to say their backups aren't good right they're good baseball players but anytime you could get a pitcher facing the Brewers if Yelich and Contreras and Bauer's aren't going to be in the lineup it makes it a little better but um you're feeling Trevor Rogers here and then uh the second lowest rostered pitcher in this tier is Jackson Joe we've had our questions before yes we have oh I thought there was that no I thought I thought I'm adding something to it I was like yeah we had a quest for four but yes but we're sorry there was no okay all right um so yeah normally we would do the arrested

29:18development I don't care for Joe but uh this was a much different start that we just saw it was reduction of fastballs in favor of secondaries and it was a much better looking curveball um it was a tighter one it was uh it actually looked like he had a second curveball I believe uh that was more like the gyro curve and then there was an actual bigger one underneath it and I feel like that gyro curve which I feel like there needs to be a whole article just about the the wave of gyro curves there are these curveballs that are getting called curveballs but they're actually like gyro sliders at 87 86 with they're just like a drop slider is I guess what the term is because it's not directly a bullet slider that is right zero zero it's negative six drop guys I know that a lot of you don't care about these movement metrics but the thing is once you know and like if familiar with them it's just it changes everything a quick analysis of just so you can see how good a pitches are not just by knowing those two numbers um which is really fun anyway Jackson Joe was much

30:19better with those secondaries last game and I'm so curious if you can continue that again against a really bad white sucks lineup so that might be something to consider here um I imagine also the burr is pulled all those guys from that lineup because it was they're clinching uh along those lines or I mean it was also a 12 p.m. it was an afternoon start yeah it was just like but I but I just mean yeah they will do things like that if it's a day game after a night game if it's like guys like contraris and yellow to our veterans and it's just like we'll give them a rest here and there before the playoffs because like get them off their feet for a day whatever I don't think it's going to be like a consistent thing but I think they will do that more often um for any paralta red socks we talked about the same thing like I know struggling offense I don't know that contraris will be back by Saturday either paralta has been like better of late but that's better when you're comparing it to the beginning of the season that's not Freddie paralta last year top 20 starting pitcher no absolutely and yet he's obviously got into a better rhythm with

32:28mcgreeby I I've never been a huge mcgreeby fan but I get it against the nationals um I just I don't know that it's like a winch I mean the the cardinals aren't playing great either um and so you're trying to get a sneaky win quality start I feel you know better about with mcgreeby because that's generally his bag it's like what he does um the christian scott one obviously worries me the most that that shouldn't be a shock he's the lowest roster player in this tier it's the fillies and I I would maybe have put christian scott in a questionable tier but maybe that's me being too hard I think christian scott are all about him is that he constantly gets straightouts he's always like seven straightouts every single game yeah and there's something to be said about that um when you gain consistent strikeout production and then you are not getting the worst ratio production right and that's kind of why I'm like you know what if you have christian scott I think you're going to start him just for that reason alone now the four seamer is the best pitch right

33:31now for christian scott the sweeper cutter splitter I guess there's a curveball I guess there's this weird sinker that I want to throw more at 91 82 that's really is a change up I guess those are not as good as the four seamer right now like last game he just completely just pounded the zone with four seamer's but it was effective and the thing is he has a good feel for that heater right now and with that I feel okay about this also left ease are generally easier for christian scott because he has the cutter to do the candle mixanches up top right that is the cutter coming back down to the zone pairing with that four seamer so I'm not as afraid I think as as I might be otherwise with christian scott the moment he's actually someone I think you know I just got asked in the discord who are under the radar for next year I might consider christian scott that because if you guys don't remember christian scott was coming back from Tommy john this year yeah he's needs more time to get back into his rhythm you talk about all the time about new pitches needing a year to really materialize and there's the scatter that showed up so give it another year

54:35to the disco he's throwing cutters and sweepers all over the zone and it's grainy barely through sinkers at all even that game is five in the last start and that might be the reason why the velocity fell as much as it did but this is the twins the twins are not really that exciting and it's a questionable start it's not me saying hey go and do it right it is not an overpowering pitcher here but he is getting outs with these pitches they're not the easiest to handle and what's most interesting I think here is that Ryan Johnson is weird he has a low arm angle it's about 17 degrees or something like that where the cutter and the sweeper are frisbees and the cutter is at like 89 and the sweeper is like 82 or so or maybe it's like 87 to 81 something along those lines where the cutter is really the fastball and the sweeper is a change up for the cutter almost uh it's a little bit strange and guys aren't used to it and I think that's really what's causing a lot of this weak contact meanwhile above him you have Quinn Matthews against the nationals who is not fully

1:07:19have a lot of time off well I will say this if Logan Webb isn't actually making that start on Friday they have two days off that week and they could put Lane in Roup on Friday then do Tidwell and Molina they could directly have Molina going on Sunday theoretically just throwing that one out there I would be shocked if actually I was going to say I'd be shocked if Jake Bennett makes both those starts but I really think the Red Sox may say thank you to Jake Bennett at the end of the regular season and not carry him on the postseason yeah roster for a while so I think Jake Bennett actually could make that Sunday start starter well yeah but I mean he's not I don't think he's going to be on the wild card yeah yeah yeah especially if Garrett crochet is back enough to throw two innings or whatever I don't think Bennett makes so then you give Bennett a time off before the division series if they make it I will say of the names that we just mentioned Anthony K Royals Colorado at home as a two step is interesting to me well the one problem is

1:08:25that he was limited in his last game yes and so and I hope they open for him it also depends on the white socks right now if you're fighting for the postseason spot they're not going to limit or whatever yeah um Kitehr Montero Washington and Pittsburgh are two pretty good starts um for him uh man Javier like the at athletics is tough but you know it's at least on my radar Sean Monaya has not been good but at Texas at Washington isn't yeah the meds have been known to have weird guys go though on Sunday as in like you know trying a new guy out for some reason so don't I don't know if that one's going to happen there um and then you know Gossman versus Miami at Boston but he's not going to go that second one um so we're limited a little here like look Daniel Lynch white socks and guardians the matchups are nice but like what are you getting from Daniel Lynch you know uh right I mean uh Andrew Palante could be going for both

1:09:29there and so if you need volume that might be an option Michael Sorroca could go both and he looked much better with this curveball even though it is cores and the batteries that might be something worth your time uh to keep in mind um and Kikuchi at athletics at Seattle he did not look good last time it is secretive aired in the first one at least is at Seattle second one they might wrestle starters in the last day or so and Kikuchi needs the innings at this point so yeah that might actually be something to take advantage of when you are making these decisions on Sunday keep in mind two factors does this team likely have something to play for next weekend and does this pitcher have something to pitch for and so that could third thing yeah what's the line that gonna look like for the other team what's not going for the yet as you can imagine about Kikuchi is really good of like Kikuchi needs innings yeah so it's very unlikely they would skip his start and it's very possible pictures yeah need innings some young pitchers have thrown too many innings so you need to kind of like make that decision of like does this guy just need

1:10:29to throw because they want just to see him keep throwing like an Andrew Alvarez he only has one start but that type of pitcher is like there's no reason for the nationals to not let him pitch like he needs he hasn't thrown an exorbitant amount of innings and he needs to pitch so exactly let him keep throwing so the last thing I will mention is athletics they had Brady Basso uh going to they could extend him at least maybe in that second one I probably won't happen it's probably not worth your time but I just Eric I just so badly want to be able to show give me that basalena that's all I want to do that's all you want in the whole life that's all that was I can't I just just in my head spring training at Berkeley Carroll just in the van listen to give me that basalena I back in 2000 and what was that five oh so it wasn't basalena guys gasoline of course all right that's absolutely that's you do it for us we're gonna be back on Monday so you're not
