Detroit Lions stick to their disciplined approach in free agency, sparking heated debate among fans—will patience pay off, or is more aggression needed for a Super Bowl push?
Matt Dery and guest Colton Pouncy break down the Lions’ recent moves, highlighted by the signings of Christian Izien and Tom Kennedy while losing key contributors like Al-Quadin Muhammad and Grant Stuard. They dissect potential fits at edge rusher, the ongoing rebuild of the linebacker corps after Alex Anzalone’s departure, and offensive line shifts with Larry Borum and Cade Mays joining the roster. Insightful commentary includes whether Cam Jordan could be Detroit’s next big defensive addition, and if the team’s draft-focused strategy can fill pressing roster holes.
Don’t miss this sharp analysis of Brad Holmes’ front office philosophy, the Lions’ calculated roster-building, and the long-term vision impacting their NFC North trajectory. #FIRSTLISTEN

You all hating on Brad Holmes, right?
Oh, Brad Holmes, come on!
Tom Kennedy's back?
I feel like Brad Pitt in a money ball after the Hatterberg Homer, I'm pumping my fist.
Who is Christian Isian?
Our very own Lockdown Podcast Network Zone, James Yarko from Lockdown Bucks, made a video
for us.
To tell us about Christian Isian, the newest Detroit Lion, inking a one-year deal, Free
Agents Safety Slash, Nickel Corner, very popular in Tampa Bay.
Gets a one-year deal from the Lions.
Tom Kennedy, back.
Lions lose Al Kuddin, Muhammad, we'll get into that.
Grant Stewart also gone.
All of that today, here on Lockdown Lions, which is proudly brought to you today.
By our friends at Fandall, Fandall giving you a way to turn that energy into even bigger
potential wins with a college basketball parlay profit boost at Fandall.com to get started.
All right, news of the day.
So many things going on.
Let's start with breaking news right here right now, Al Kuddin, Muhammad, very quickly.
We'll talk about this.
I'll get to it in a second as well, but Al Kuddin, Muhammad, just hot off the press here.
According to Ian Rapaport has signed a one-year reported six million dollar deal that max
value of six million with the Tampa Bay Bucks.
The Lions South down there at the pirate ship.
They got the gains media poster boy, Alexander Loneon now.
The Bucks have signed AQM, Al Kuddin, Muhammad, one-year, six million dollars coming off of
that 11-sack season, again, another edge rusher off the board.
I thought the Lions were going to actually bring him back.
I had this feeling that he was going to somehow be back in a one-year deal, but he gets a max
value of six million from the Bucks, probably too rich for the Lions and Brad Holmes's blood,
and he ends up in Tampa.
So what are the Lions going to do here about the edge rusher position?
We're going to talk about that with Colton Pouncy coming up, but Al Kuddin,
you wish him a lot of love and the best because 11-sacks, you only played 40 percent of the
snaps. He's not great against the run, but did a pretty admirable job in getting home to the
quarterback, but it's pretty obvious. The Lions were not going to give him multiple years,
nor were they going to give him the kind of money that the Bucks threw at him.
Grant Steward also leaving the special team's ace.
The man that the Lions put on kick returns in the preseason and it was an unmitigated disaster.
The linebacker and very good special teamer gets a multiple-year deal from the Rams,
two years, and just under six million dollars as a special team's ace to go out there and play for
Sean McVeigh and the LA Rams. So Steward out, Muhammad out. In for the Lions, as I told you before,
they're bringing back restricted free agent Tom Kennedy, the longest tenured Detroit Lion Tom
Kennedy has been there longer than Jared Goff and anybody else with the organization.
Coming back for more, TK85, you got to figure right now with Detroit not bringing Kolly Freeman back,
that at least right now on the depth chart, St. Brown, Jameson Williams, Tesla, Dominic Loveitt,
the seventh brown pick from last year that they want to take a longer look at.
And Tom Kennedy, at least are your receivers for now. Kennedy has been on this team, off this team,
cut, brought back, practice squad, active roster for five years. So what's another year?
All right. And also Trevor Newoski resigned as well. All this is on cheap deals.
And that's kind of what this offseason has been. Next year, when I do shows in January and February
in March, just my listeners, all the everydayers, all of my great lockdown line listeners,
listeners just remind me, just remind me to not say, oh, the lion's going to spend some money
of free agency, because they're not. Okay. That's just not their philosophy.
Draft develop and re-sign. That's what they want to do. And they're not going to, they're not
going to fear from that. Not this regime. Now again, if they go 12 and five this year and win the
division and and get far in the playoffs, we're going to commend Brad Holmes and Dan Cam,
everybody. But this is another nine and eight season this coming year. And there's a lack of depth.
We'll point to this week and go, remember when the lions could have had this guy, this guy,
and this guy, why didn't they spend? So we'll see about that. But the guy to keep an eye on
is intriguing to me. And that is Christian Isian, who comes over from the Tampa Bay Bucks,
first reported by Jordan Schultz on a one year deal. I've not seen the money as of yet.
Versatile, uh, safety slash kind of hybrid corner, nickel corner, who has spent three years
with the Tampa Bay Bucks, he's 26 years of age. So the lions are getting younger.
510 197 undrafted started a lot of games in 2024 for Tampa. Then got beaten out for kind of the
nickel back job by Jacob Parrish, whom the Bucks drafted last year out of Kansas State.
Uh, PFF grade is highest year was his rookie year. It was a 67.7. This past year, a 51.3.
Not great. But listen to James Yarko, the host of Lockdown Bucks, talking about Christian Isian,
whom anybody that I've been texting with today just really likes this young kid.
James Yarko here from Lockdown Bucks. And what are the Detroit lions getting in Christian Isian?
I'll tell you this. This is a guy that you love to have in the locker room. All of his teammates
loved him. This is a guy that busted his butt to go from an undrafted rookie free agent to a
starting slot corner in his first year. His versatility cannot be overstated. He can start for
you at nickel. He can start for you at either safety position and he's going to contribute on
special teams. He also has an uncanny ability to be opportunistic and take away the football. Now
I will say that his aggressiveness will bite him in the butt every once in a while. It doesn't
happen often, but sometimes he will pay for trying to be even more aggressive than he should and
trying to make a play. But this is a player that the Buccaneers and Bucks fans hated to see leave.
Todd Bowles numerous times referred to him as his ultimate chest piece. This is a guy they can do
a little bit of everything. He does it all very well and is a huge addition for the Detroit lions.
I personally wish him the best of luck and I'm looking forward to seeing him play for the Detroit
lions next season.
All right, James. Thank you very much. How about that from James Yarko Lockdown Bucks.
Loves. Loves. Christian Isian competitor battles you and look, the lions probably would have
loved to have kept Amik Robertson, but they weren't going to pay a nickel corner eight million
dollars a year. They're going to get Christian Isian and again, I haven't seen the money yet,
but probably on a song for one year. John Ledyard, who was used to host Lockdown Bucks,
still lives down in Tampa and writes for some stack covering the Bucks. He texted me and said,
Isian is a tough, smart football player who plays fast and can handle the mental workload
of preparing as a nickel cornerback or as a safety. He's even played a little outside cornerback
in Tampa Bay. What he gets, he earns with IQ and mental processing, blah, blah, blah, a little bit
of playmaker in him. He's got that dog in him. Good depth guy to have active on game days because
he can wear a lot of hats and, quote, sounds just like the kind of guy that the lions are looking for.
I don't mind this pickup at all. I mean, knew that the lions needed to have some insurance
at safety and at nickel. You lose Amik Robertson. You're asking a lot of NS Raikstra to come back
and basically in his third year, even though he hasn't played and immediately get out there.
I like this Isian pickup. All right. I'm not going to sit here and tell you, oh,
that puts the lions over the top. Christian Isian, not at all. This team has got to bring in some
edge rushers. Have to have to go get cam Jordan. Please go get them. That would make my day.
Colton Pounsy are coming up next as the lions trotted out. Larry Borum,
Cade Maze and Isaiah Pacheco today. We'll check in in Allen Park down at 222 Rodwood Drive
with the Colton Pounsy. We will do that to coming up next right here on this Thursday edition
of locked on locks.
And as we told you earlier today, locked on lions and brought to you by our friends at Fandule,
College Basketball in full swing here at March Madness, big games, tight spreads, momentum swings
every single night. We got early tipoffs. We got late night west coast games.
Always action on the board. Now, Fandule is giving you a way to turn that energy into even bigger
potential wins with a college basketball parlay profit boost. You can build any college
hoops parlay you want, rivalry games, ranked matchups, whatever fits your read. You can
mix spreads, totals and player props to match how you see the slate playing out. And then
you can apply that profit boost and instantly bump up the potential payout. I want to put
some money down tomorrow, Michigan and Ohio State. Yes, the game. Well, in basketball,
the big 10 tournament, do it up right there. What about my Syracuse Orange? Oh, we're
already out of the ACC tournament. Clean house. Thank goodness they're doing that. Go save
gold, bold ride with the team. You've been following all season at your parlay or style
now with more upside behind it. Head to fandool.com to get started. That's fandool.com fand
to play your game. I joining us right now. Here he is from the athletic dot com Colton
Pounsy covers the lines for us is live and direct from down in Allen Park at the compound.
Cool. Good to see you. Good to see too. Thanks for having me. How about that Isaiah? How about
that Isaiah? Pacheco press or you were recording here just before six o'clock and he was just
swearing up a store. He sounds like he's going to be an entertaining quote this year. Absolutely.
I'm so buzzing from that man. I feel like I'm ready to run through a wall for that guy.
I mean, he's an energetic dude. I think that's our first impression. I think as soon as
he walked away, we were just like, I got a lion. I mean, I get why they got him. Really
infectious energy. Came across as a really good teammate. Some of the farms in there for
share, which you all appreciate over here, but just really came down as a downer of dude
that's ready to play football and try one some games. So definitely a first electric
first presser for Isaiah. Pacheco. I want to get into some of the guys that they've signed,
but what is your overall impression of free agency? You know this being on social media.
The fan base is not thrilled with with the lack of activity on, I guess, impact guys and
starters, but isn't this kind of what you expected? Yeah. I think for the most part, I was
a little bit curious if you wanted to free up some of that extra money. If you have some
flexibility to do it, if you wanted to, I was curious. I think everyone kind of knew
that they're going to restructure golf, but Pane, St. Would you want to dip it to that
call emergency funds, but they're playing sort of the smart, sensible game, which they
always do. So like in some sense, like it's kind of what we should have expected. I just
wondered if there was going to be maybe a little bit more aggression after 98 season 4,
please finish, but they're saving some of that money for future funds and trying to add
and smart ways. So certainly understand why they're going this route. They don't have millions
and millions on cap space to kind of go out and make some moves, but things have been a little
slow to be honest. So I certainly understand some of the frustrations out there, but a lot
of time left, it's Thursday. So guys don't sign until the second wave of free agency
and next next week some of these veteran guys are kind of waiting. So I would say be patient
a little bit with the dust settle, but you know, I certainly understand like I think today
they signed their first external defensive region. So get a wait till day four for that.
You know, I get some of the frustration, I guess. I mean, you look at the board right now,
and you got to figure, all right, at some point, right, an edge rusher has got to come here.
I mean, right now that that room is basically eight and a Hutchinson and John McAroon. I mean,
there's not a lot of guys there. I knew I'd get you on that one. But seriously,
Cam Jordan, epinessa, al-Qadimahama, now gone to Tampa. Tell me about, are you surprised?
You got six million from the box. And but what are they going to do in that room?
Yeah, I thought al-Qadimah get a little bit more after the season he had.
He made it very clear to us, locker and clean out that he was not in the mood to take a discount,
because he felt like he took a discount last year, deciding for, I believe, 1.4 million with the
lines a year ago around this time. So I'm like, yeah, he's earned a paid bump. I just don't know
how far I would go. We have a guy at the athletic, Daniel Popper, he covers the chargers, but he's
also, he's also in charge of our top 150 free agents list and contract projections. He had al-Qadimah
and I believe two years, 18 million, and he ended up getting one year six. So if that's all it took,
I probably would have brought him back on that, but I don't know. Maybe he was trying to get down
to Florida, no stating contacts down there. Maybe that fact didn't, I don't know. But they do need
to get an edge. And Cam Jordan's a guy that I would love for them to get. I think he fits their
profile. Obviously has a history with Dan Campbell and New Orleans, big culture guy. I don't know if
he wants to leave New Orleans. He's a guy that's been there, his whole career, right? So it's like
how long do you want to drift away from the team that you've kind of known for your whole career?
I'm not sure if he wants to go that route, but if he does and he is open to it, which I believe
Adam Schuster put out a couple of weeks ago that he's open to the idea of leaving. If that's the case
and you want him to try to play for a contender and win a ring, like I think it's a match made in heaven
if he wants to go that route and the lines are open to that. So one way or another, they got to
get some edge help here, whether it's here or the draft. I think they should probably double dip,
getting an established veteran guide and free and see and then going draft a guy in the first
second round. I think that makes some sense for them, but they need some help in that room for sure.
And what about replacing Alex Anzaloni? Is there a possibility that they play more
two linebackers, five DBs? Obviously, if Branch is healthy, he's kind of a hybrid anyway,
but how do you kind of sense where that's going? Yeah, that's been a big topic of conversations,
offseason, especially watching the Seahawks go and win a Super Bowl, playing heavy 425.
That idea was kind of floated to shape, I believe, at the combine, and he kind of brushed it off
a little bit and say, I know everyone wants a copy of the Seahawks, we get it, but we have a certain
style, I'm reinstate to what we do best. And obviously, that changed a little bit when you lose
Alex Anzaloni, who was such a key part of this team for so many years now and a five-time captain
for them and a starter. So I am curious where they go from here. Obviously, they reassign
Alcorn Riga's to one-year deal. Do they view him as a starter? Because the last four years,
he's kind of been deaf, I guess outside of his rookie year, he's been deaf for the Lions. And so,
do you kind of view him as a starter? Because if the season started today, he would be in the starting
line of, you go four-three. Or do you want to keep him in that depth spot and maybe go and draft
a coverage lineback that can replace some of the things that Anzal did really well at.
Gaelic Kyle Lewis, I've been kind of preaching his name all offseason, the pit linebacker, which I
think you can be able to get on D2. So if you want to get a guy like that to replace him,
you can also play some big nickel, if you want to go four to five. So they'll have some options.
I think they can get a guy in the draft they want. They want to go younger, which is to me,
been a little bit of a theme with a frequency, I guess lack of signings or letting guys leave.
It seems like they're trying to get younger. So if that's the route they go, I think I'll play
like that in second, second round, third round would make a lot of sense if they can get a third
round thing. And obviously you were all over the Taylor Decker situation.
Under the Lions haven't commented publicly yet. And I know Penae Sule has been asked before
about moving from right tackle to left tackle. And he likes where he is, but he's probably the
best player on your team. How do you think that shakes out? Yeah, the Penae to left tackle
situation is pretty interesting because I think if you were to ask Campbell like during the season,
whenever Taylor is missed time, they've always obviously kept him on the right side,
just because at least the last few years, they've kept him on that right side because
they think he's better suited there. And they don't want to rock the boat too much, but I think
if you give him the full off season to say, hey, man, you're going to make that switch. We trust
you here. It's time you're a franchise left tackle now. I think now is the time to do it. If you
can find a serviceable right tackle, which I think is easier to find than a left tackle.
So whether that's a young guy in the draft, maybe another guy in pre-ad and see or just Larry
Gorham, who they designed, find a guy that can operate and write tackle and then the Penae to left.
That's probably what I would do and give him a full off season to kind of prepare in that role
versus trying to adjust on the fly. I can do the low dice if you do that.
More with Colton Poundsy coming up next. I want to ask him about Borum, Pacheco,
Christian Isian who we talked about earlier today and all the guys at the Lions have brought in.
We'll see what Colton thinks of the free agent class of a 2026. We'll do that coming up next.

Our buddy Colton Palsy with us from theathletic.com. I subscribe. I read his stuff all of the time.
It was down in Allen Park, or isn't Allen Park right now following the press conferences. Today,
Cade Mays spoke today, Colton. Larry Borum as well, the pride of brother Rice and Isaiah Pacheco.
Obviously, we talked about Pacheco a little bit in the pressors. Anything else stand out for you
today from any of those three guys? Yeah, absolutely. Cade Mays is an interesting name.
Obviously, the lines in the center. We all knew that. I think a lot of us kind of
viewed them as a fit for a veteran in pregnancy, just because you know, you could draft a rookie,
and you know, you could bootate the center. I wouldn't have done that, just because
Tate seems really comfortable at right guard. I don't know if he wanted to play center.
And then you always run the risk of a young player being inexperienced if you want to throw
him out there as a rookie. So, I always thought they needed a veteran guy. And they got one in
Cade Mays, who's been in the league since I believe 22. That's correct. But he has some experience,
his 20 crew starts at center under his belt. But because of his weird kind of upbringing,
I guess in the league, you know, he was cut by the Panthers, you know, kind of poached by the,
I think the Giants picked him up for a little bit there. Yeah, practice walk. Yep. And then the
Panthers signed him right back when they needed some help there. And he's kind of been a dude for
them ever since the last two seasons, let's just say. So 20 starts is a good chunk of experience.
And the league and a lot of that center last year, obviously. And I think he's still in a
sending player. That's the intriguing part about him because obviously you can look at the numbers,
three years, 25. That looks like a bargain. He's not the bonafide dude. Obviously that Tate Linderbombe
is or Conor McGovern, Tatebeer, Beadash, some of the guys that were available. But at still just
26 years old with relatively new experience at the position, I think you can view him as in
a sending player. And I think if you put him in this system, which you're petting as sort of
gap and power and like heavy run scheme that it seems like the lines want to get back to,
he's a good fit for that. He's not the most agile guy, but he can win with strength and power
in the interior. You watch Tate of him kind of taking on Kenny Clark and some of these big dudes,
these big nose tackles across the league. That's what the lines need. And a guy that can hold up
and pass pro as well. And he hasn't allowed a sack in two seasons. So I like that move a lot. He was
number 38 on our big board. And I think they needed a guy that can come in step right away and
just elevate the floor of that offensive line. You're not expecting to be Frank Ragnall, but
if you can get you a little bit close to that floor, that standard that he kind of led the way
for so long, Frank, when he was here while letting your young guys next to him develop. I think
I like that a little bit. And he should be pretty good for there.
I know Larry Boram spoke today. I mean, do you think he is in the competition for a starting
job or is this a swing guy that is more of a backup? I mean, I know that there were games,
especially the Washington game this year for the Dolphins when he started right tackle did very
well, great it out very well. And then there was training camp when Aiden Hutchinson and those
open practices kind of ate him alive. Like what's your sense with him? Yeah, he's a tough guy to
peg right now. I think he he's a Mizzou guy. So I feel I empathize with him. Some struggles in the
week. I got to support my Mizzou guys. But I think he's better at right tackle than left. You know,
early in his career, he's playing a lot of left tackle. It seems like he's kind of settling
as a right tackle. So that's another way. Another reason to kind of move Pineda will left tackle.
If you want to go that route and kind of maximize pieces that you might bring in.
I think it's a decent move to bring in depth. If that's what he is, Dan Campbell kind of mentioned
that even when he was talking about Taylor Dekker, he said, hey, whether Taylor's here or not,
we're still going to need a guy that can step in and start if we need that guy off the bench and
crunch time. So I always viewed them as a team that would be a fit for a veteran piece or,
you know, obviously a young piece in the draft. But with him, I'm not so sure. Like if they view him
as a starter, I think you can get a little dicey there. He's not proving to be a high level start in
the league. He is a guy I think that can come in and provide some steady play as a backup on a
limited basis. And maybe he gives you some insurance. If you can't go get a young tackle in the
draft or it doesn't line up with BPA as we know this team operates with. But if they're not going
to make another move in free agency for a tackle, a starting caliber tackle, I think they really
need to hit that position hard in the draft, whether it's at 17 or even maybe even trading up a
couple spots for one of those guys. Monroe Freeling from Georgia. He's a player I like a lot.
I think he has maybe priced himself. I have the line's range with his outstanding combat
performance. I think he had a 9.99 relative athletic score. So I feel like he could go top 15
at this point lines. They love that. They love that. They absolutely do. A rad score, maybe,
you're all over it. No, no. So we'll see if he's the guy. But I think they need to attack that
pretty hard and get a starting caliber sending the draft. So we'll see. But Boram at least gives you
some insurance in the event you can. Pacheco is interesting. You watch his tape from his first
two years and you go, oh my god, he'll be a chief for life. And obviously running backs and
but he's not been the same guy. And I know today at his presser, it sounded like he was really
trying to sell himself like, hey, I'm going to be back. I'm wearing my number 10 and a look out
almost like he knows last two years. He's not been very good. Yeah, I mean, I think you said it best
like he's trying to sell him sell it to himself. Like he's talking to us and maybe to the fans
from afar, but it really sounded like a guy that needed to hear it from himself. So he's going
into this mindset where he said this is the hungry he's ever been. Kind of has lots of proof,
chip on a shoulder, all those sort of cliche is, but I think it's true in some sense because he
has not had a productive couple of years here. Obviously, he's first and second year. Kind of
looked like he could be a dude in the league playing for the chiefs and then playing alongside
Pat and Holmes, but those injuries have slapped a lot of his speed, his ability to cut,
you know, his his vision hasn't and then the other thing is his vision hasn't always been
top tier. So he was really relying on his athletic trait. So when those are gone, you know, you're left
with, you know, a shell of yourself. So he understands the opportunity. He understands where he is
in his his career. So I mean, for one year, 1.8 million kind of says it all, but I think for what
that contract is and what the lines would ask him to do, which to me is probably no more than
8 to 10 carries a game on a given week, he can absolutely do that. And I think the hope is the
further he's removed from some of these injuries, he can regain some of that athleticism that he
was known for earlier in his career, you can have a serviceable number two running back on
your hands at a very, very, very cheap contract. And I think that makes sense for the lines with
where they are with the cap space and makes sense for God, but check out a come and play for
God, Dan Campbell, who, I mean, it seems like those two are already hidden off based on his
press conference. So he's in good spot with the plan to have it happen. Final thing and give me
like a minute on this, but, you know, I saw some people posting they, well, it's going to be a gap
here. The lines don't do that. I mean, I think that is absolutely ridiculous. They've got nine
draft picks. Like you said, there's going to be some June first cuts. I don't love what's going
on either. I would like to see more and more aggressiveness. But with that being said, this has
never been what they've done. But some of this stuff about when maybe they're taking a gap year
and come on now, right? Like they're still trying to win this thing, right?
Yeah, this isn't like a post college post or post high school like I need a gap year to figure
out myself. That's not what this is, guys. I don't think Dan Campbell knows that term to be honest
with you. So I think the thing to remember is they, this is a high floor based on all the talent
roster. And you can look at all the holes. The lines might not even view it the same way. There
have been so many years in the past where like we say, oh, that's a hole. That's a hole for you.
And then they go and get a running back or a linebacker and all of a sudden, like they elevate
the floor of their team. So, you know, they've collected and they've done this thing in a way that
has given them that high floor based on the talent and collection of players that they have.
Now, the biggest problem to me last year was the offensive line, probably the play collar,
and then defensive injuries. So what do they do? They went and got a guy that I think fits
what they were trying to do in Drew Petzing. That was priority number one for Dan Campbell. He
cast a wide net, talked to eight to 10 different coaches across the league. I think nine of those
10 were external candidates and really cast a wide net for that. And that was intentional getting
out of Drew Petzing. They, on the first day of free and see they go get a center that has some
upside and cave maze. Now, the defense is going to need some work. I think the biggest question
now is like safety and edge, maybe linebacker. So I understand some hesitancy about the defense
because they certainly need some bodies there. But again, I think you can fill a lot of those holes
on the second wave of free and see in the draft. So I'm waiting for the full picture before I,
you know, actually take them to town for the off season that they've had because they've added
guys in week two and week three free and see in past years that have ended up being pretty key
players from them. So just let it play out. If it's still like this or you're still having doubts
about it, we can have a conversation about them in the future. But it's day four for you and see
and there's a lot, a lot of time left to let this play out. Colton Poundty from the athletic and
