Raw Garlic, Egg Yolks, Heat Strokes, and Melatonin : 1531

About this episode

Raw Garlic "Ultimate Biohack" Trend Faces Scientific Scrutiny

Raw garlic has gone viral as a morning ritual, with fans crushing a clove, mixing it with honey, and crediting it with everything from lower cholesterol and better insulin sensitivity to cleared acne, eliminated brain fog, and colds cured within 24 hours. The biochemistry behind the trend is real: garlic contains no allicin until it's crushed or chopped, which mixes an enzyme with a sulfur compound to form the active compound, and letting it sit for ten to fifteen minutes before cooking preserves more of that activity. Host Dave Asprey separates what the human data actually supports, modest blood pressure and cholesterol effects, real antimicrobial properties, and a genuine bleeding-risk caution for anyone on blood thinners, from the unproven parasite-cleanse and brain fog claims driving the trend online, drawing on his own EEG tracking to challenge the cognitive benefit narrative directly.

HEPA Air Filtration Linked To Measurable Brain Function Improvements In One Month

A new study found that older adults using true HEPA filtration to reduce indoor fine particulate matter saw small but measurable cognitive improvements after just one month, adding to a growing body of evidence connecting air pollution exposure to neuroinflammation and long-term cognitive decline. Host Dave Asprey breaks down why clean air belongs in the biohacking conversation alongside supplements and training protocols, and why the World Health Organization's decision to list air pollution as a modifiable dementia risk factor is a bigger deal than it sounds.

Egg Yolk-Derived Peptides Show Neuroprotective Effects Against Oxidative Stress

New research on phosphopeptides isolated from egg yolk phosvitin found that the compounds reduced reactive oxygen species, improved antioxidant defense markers, and increased neuron survival in cells exposed to oxidative stress in the lab. Host Dave Asprey connects this early but promising finding to his long-standing case for the whole egg, yolk included, as one of the most nutrient-dense foods available, and flags what would need to happen next for this to translate into a usable protocol.

Heat Stroke Survivors Face Elevated Cardiovascular Risk Years Later, Research Shows

A closer look at heat stroke recovery reveals it's rarely a one-day event. Survivors of classic heat stroke had three and a half times the rate of ischemic heart disease twelve years later compared to matched controls, along with elevated long-term risk of kidney disease and lingering heat intolerance, fatigue, and dizziness. Host Dave Asprey draws the line between the controlled heat stress he uses deliberately in sauna and hyperthermic conditioning and the uncontrolled, uncooled heat exposure that leaves this kind of lasting cardiovascular damage, and what that distinction means for how to think about any stressor.

Long-Term Melatonin Use Linked To Nearly Double Heart Failure Risk In Large Cohort Study

A cohort study of over 130,000 adults with chronic insomnia found that those who used melatonin for a year or more had nearly double the rate of heart failure and all-cause mortality compared to non-users, along with a three and a half times higher rate of heart failure hospitalization. Host Dave Asprey walks through why this is observational data, not proof of causation, and why he's stayed a low-dose, occasional melatonin user for years rather than a nightly one, plus what the real underlying driver of chronic insomnia might be for listeners still relying on it every night.

I'm Dave Asprey. That's Dave's Bell DAIVE. And this is your 10 minute weekly upgrade on the biggest stories in biohacking, longevity, and the world of health. Let's go. Every breakthrough in human performance comes down to one thing. Just changing your state. And right now, the science and the technology and the ancient practices are converging faster than you realize. For 50 years, bad policy and stigma blocked scientific researchers from studying some of the most powerful tools for the human brain. That just changed. This October, the researchers, the clinicians, the guys, the pioneers, and consciousness tech and psychedelics are all going to be under one roof in Austin, and you can be there too with me. For the first time ever, I'm hosting and operating beyond Wonderland. Two full days while you learn the science and the practice of changing your state and you get to talk to the researchers doing it. You'll learn how these tools unlock a version of yourself you didn't know existed. You'll find talks about altered states with or without the psychedelics, a tech hall

where you can try the tools yourself, breakout sessions, breath works, ceremony, integration circles, and more. This field is moving really fast and the people who are here in Austin on October 13th and 14th with me are going to be years ahead of everyone who finds out about this later. Learn more at your ticket now at Wonderlandconference.com. So raw garlic is having a main character moment right now. People are crushing a clove, mixing it with honey, eating it first thing in the morning and claiming it fixes their cholesterol, their insulin sensitivity, their skin, their brain fog, even parasites, and apparently cures a cold in 24 hours. Garlic doesn't contain allocin until you crush it. That action mixes an enzyme with a sulfur compound and creates the active molecule. And if you let it sit about 10 minutes before you cook it, you preserve that activity instead of destroying it with heat. Garlic has real antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, and antiparasitic properties. It's powerful medicine when you need it and none of that is hype.

But I'll push back on the brain fog claim specifically because I've tracked this on myself. When I was running EEG on my own brain, garlic consistently dropped my alpha waves. And alpha is your focus and calm frequency. Hydo's garlic on a regular basis creates cognitive drag for me, not clarity. And I don't think enough people talking about this trend are actually measuring what it's doing to them. On the cholesterol side, Stanford ran a six month head-to-head with 200 people on raw garlic, powdered garlic, aged extract, and placebo. And nobody's LDL moved, not one group. So the blood pressure benefit is real and worth having. The cholesterol claim mostly isn't. And the parasite, cleanse, and brain fog stuff is the internet doing what the internet does with a real compound. For your next meal, crush the garlic and let it sit 10 minutes before you eat or cook it. And if brain fog is your goal, track your own response instead of assuming it's working.

New research on older adults found that running true hepa filtration for about a month produced measurable improvements in cognitive performance, not massive, but real. The theory is that fine particulate matter, the stuff you're breathing from traffic, wildfire smoke, whatever's floating around your house, drives neuroimplomation and vascular stress, and cleaning that out of your air gives your brain room to breathe. This should be bigger news than it is. We spend so much energy optimizing supplements and completely ignore the 20,000 breaths we take every single day. You cannot supplement your way out of a toxic environment. The World Health Organization just added air pollution as a modifiable dementia risk factor, and that's a big, quiet admission from an institution that doesn't move fast. Tesla's BioWeapon Defense Mode, sealing your cabin and running hepa grade filtration in traffic, is an underrated biohack that most people bought for the marketing and never think about again. If you're hearing this and you haven't already, put a real hepa unit in your bedroom,

run it while you sleep, and if you've got a PM 2.5 monitor, use it, and see if you could add one to your car. You'll be shocked how bad your indoor area is on a normal day. There's a new study on phospho peptides isolated from A-Gioc, specifically from a protein called phosphyten, that protected neurons from oxidative stress in a lab setting. Cells treated with these peptides had lower reactive oxygen species, better antioxidant markers, and higher survival when exposed to stressors that normally damage neurons. I love this one because it's another example of the yoke being where the biology lives. Stop throwing away yokes and reaching for egg white omelets. This is early lab work, so I'm not telling you to micro-dose egg peptides tomorrow, but the direction fits exactly what you'd expect from one of the most nutrient dense foods available to us. Phospholipids, coline, fat soluble vitamins, and now apparently protective peptides too.

This is the kind of research that eventually turns into a supplement, and I'll be watching for the human trials. A case out of high school athletics is putting a spotlight on something that doesn't get enough attention. Heat stroke can carry consequences for over a decade, not just a bad afternoon. Survivors of classic heat stroke had three and a half times the rate of a Schema-Cart disease 12 years later compared to matched controls, plus elevated risk of kidney disease and ongoing heat intolerance, fatigue, and dizziness that can last for years. This confirms the age old saying, your body keeps a ledger. A cute trauma to your mitochondria and your cardiovascular system doesn't disappear once you feel fine again. Heat stroke breaks down cell membranes and stresses every major organ system at once, and we treat it like a weak injury when it's actually a systemic insult with a decade long tail. If heat stroke has ever happened to you or your kid, treat it as a flag to track your cardiovascular and kidney markers going forward. Treat this as a reminder to stay up on your electrolytes well in the heat and listen

to your body. An extra hot push during a cardio session is not worth potential lifelong damage. Now's a good time to commit to the things that make you feel better, feel more powerful, and part of that is upgrading your hair and skin routine. If you're thinking about having better hair, maybe this is your sign to start. The iristore elite and alumina face mask are both part of my stack. The elite is their advanced hair growth system. It's got 300 lasers and 200 LEDs to help your growth thicker, healthier hair in about 3 months. It's really convenient and you can wear it when you're working or reading or cooking or doing anything else. The alumina face mask takes about 10 minutes a few times a week. It gives you red, infrared, and even a little bit of blue light which you want on your skin in limited doses. The result is fewer breakouts, smoother skin, and less dullness. The iristore backs their products with a 12 month money back guarantee. So if you don't see results, you get a full refund, even if you used it.

I restores offering some huge discounts on the red light therapy devices right now. You can save on customer favorites like the iristore elite helmet and the alumina face mask. Go to iristore.com slash day. And I appreciate you supporting the show and telling them that I sent you there. So give your hair and skin the upgrade they deserve so you look the way you want. That's iristore.com slash day. Your brain uses 20% of your energy. When your energy is low, you're going to feel it because you don't make the same amount of energy every day. You lose your edge, thinking it slows down, and your brain can run on two things. Glucose and ketones. Glucose is the default, but it runs out. Ketones are a cleaner energy source, especially on really long days when you have to focus, but a strict keto diet or fasting for days isn't very practical for most of us. So how are you going to solve that problem? Kinetic delivers ketones directly without any keto diet required. And they ran brain scans on this. One bottle of kinetic increased alpha brain wave activity by 18% and gamma wave activity by 16%. That directly translates to more focus.

And while most ketone drinks taste like gasoline, this is something you'll actually enjoy. I love to use kinetic before my deep work so my brain stays on. It gives you clarity without overstimulation. Go to drinkkinetic.com slash day for 15% off. That's drink kinetic K and E T I K dot com slash day. My brain scored in the 99.99%ile of ability to focus for sustained periods on kinetic. This is the big one. A cohort of over 130,000 adults with chronic insomnia found that people who'd used melatonin for a year or more had heart failure rates of 4.6% versus 2.7% in non-users, almost double. Hospitalization for heart failure was 3.5 times higher and all cause mortality was nearly double as well. Before you freak out, this is observational data, not causal.

People who need melatonin for a year's straight probably have worse sleep architecture, or comorbidities, more stress to begin with, and that's a real confounder. Melatonin is a hormone, not a vitamin, and dosing it nightly at whatever random milligram amount is on a drugstore bottle, usually way higher than what your pineal gland would ever naturally produce, can mess with your own circadian signaling over time. I use melatonin very occasionally for jet lag or a specific circadian shift at a low dose around 500 micrograpes. If you've been taking melatonin every night for a year because you can't sleep, the real problem might be undiagnosed sleep apnea, cortisol dysregulation, or blue light wrecking your circadian rhythm, with melatonin just papering over the actual issue. File this away as interesting data that we need to keep an eye on, and try to work on optimizing your sleep hygiene if you're still relying on melatonin.

If you only take one thing from this week, make it the heat stroke story. Here's why. I use heat on purpose, sauna, hyperthermic conditioning, because controlled heat stress makes you stronger. Those survivors got the same stressor with no control and no cooling, and 12 years later their hearts are still paying for it. That's the line that matters with everything in this game, not whether a stressor is good or bad, but whether you're dosing it or it's dosing you. Know your limits, have a wonderful Labor Day weekend, and I'll see you next week. Alright guys, that is your weekly biohacking round up. Join me again next Friday for another rundown of the biggest health stories in the news. Enjoy your weekend. The human upgrade, formerly bulletproof radio, was created and is hosted by Dave Asprey.
