Good morning, this is your Friday surf zone forecast for South Florida, brought to you by the National Weather Service in Miami.
Starting with Coastal Palm Beach, where conditions are definitely more exciting than the rest of the region. A High Surf Advisory remains in effect until 8 AM Saturday, with waves building to 5 to 7 feet today. That's some respectable swell for the area. However, there's a significant High Rip Current Risk in effect through Sunday evening, so experienced swimmers and surfers should exercise caution and never venture out alone. Water temperatures are running in the mid 70s, which is comfortable for extended time in the water. Expect partly sunny skies with just a slight chance of showers and northeast winds around 15 miles per hour. The UV Index is very high, so sunscreen is absolutely essential today.
Moving down the coast to Broward and Miami Dade counties, conditions are considerably milder. Surf heights here are just 1 to 2 feet, but here's the catch: the High Rip Current Risk extends through Sunday evening in these areas as well. Don't let the smaller waves fool you. Rip currents can develop and intensify regardless of wave size, particularly near structures like groins, jetties, and piers. Northeast winds will be slightly stronger here, blowing 15 to 20 miles per hour today. Again, partly sunny with a slight chance of showers and that very high UV Index.
Down in Collier County, including Naples and Marco Island, it's a completely different story. The ocean there is essentially glassy with surf heights of 1 foot or less and a Low Rip Current Risk. Perfect conditions if you're looking for a calm beach day without the rough water. Temperatures will be slightly warmer too, reaching the lower 80s.
Looking ahead to Saturday, Palm Beach will still see 4 to 6 foot waves with the High Rip Current Risk continuing. Broward and Miami Dade stay mild at 1 to 2 feet. Collier County remains placid. The High Rip Current Risk persists through Sunday evening for the Atlantic facing beaches, so plan your beach activities accordingly and stay safe out there.
