wraps up. The CBS program, which has run for 33 years, is set to end this May, as a

huge J.R.R. Token fan, Colbert is teaming up with his son, screenwriter Peter McGee,

to co-write a fresh Lord of the Rings movie. The film draws from chapters 3-8 in the

Fellowship of the Ring, focusing on Frodo and the Hobbits kicking off their journey. Colbert

pitched it as a standalone tale that slots neatly into the bigger story, staying true to both

the books and Peter Jackson's earlier films. Fans have long known Colbert's passion for

the series, from hosting panels with Jackson to geeking out over the lore. Now, with more

time on his hands, he's diving deeper into that world he loves. He's already been developing

the idea, reportedly called The Lord of the Rings, Shadow of the Past. The story picks

up 14 years later, as Sam, Mary, Pippin, and Frodo retrace their old path, while Sam's

daughter Eleanor digs into a hidden secret from the War of the Ring. Colbert reached out

to Jackson two years back, and is now working alongside Oscar-winning writer, Philippa Boyens,

who helped craft the original. Trilogy's and the next film, The Hunt for Gollum, coming

in 2027, this keeps the middle-earth magic rolling strong.
