Betsi Flint and Kylie Deberg, and the ageless Paul Lotman and young Jedi Miles Partain punched their tickets into the 2026 AVP League with qualifier wins on Saturday in Manhattan Beach. Meanwhile, Evan Cory and Derek Bradford put on a show, as did Kelly Cheng and Megan Kraft.
That and more from the first of three AVP League qualifiers.

Here's a shift worth noting.
Better health care is care that meets patients where they are.
United Health Group is bringing it directly to living rooms.
This is a win for patients managing chronic conditions.
And here's the interesting thing.
By closing those care gaps, administering in-home exams and identifying risks earlier,
more diseases can be prevented and patient outcomes can improve.
In 2025 alone, United Health Group patients received over 19 million home visits.

What's up, everyone?
Welcome back to another episode of Beach Access Sandcast.
Beach volleyball with tribal horn and Travis Mowarter.
This one, recapping our first AVP qualifier of the year.
So it's the AVP league.
There's eight spots.
Three have already been given out to the women.
That is Kristen Cruz and Tarrant Brasher, Julia Donlin and Lexi Dennenberg,
and Melissa Humano, but it is in Brandy Wilkerson.
Five spots prior to Saturday were up for grabs.
Three of those spots determined by the results of Saturday's qualifier
in Manhattan Beach, California.
For the men, Trevor Crabfield, Dollhouse are already in.
Hagen, Smith, Logan, Weber are already in.
They had six spots up for grabs.
Three of those determined by the three qualifiers.
I will get to that in a minute.
Want to start out a little bit of housekeeping.
Exciting news from my part.
I've been working on this project for a long time.
Volleyball for dummies.
So it's a part of this for dummies series.
I have a couple I got as sort of demos.
I got golf for dummies here.
Pickleball for dummies and fishing,
because Austin's getting into fishing.
So I've been working on that since last.
I think I signed the contract with Wiley, the publisher,
last June with Gabby Reese, a good friend of the pod.
So we've been working on that since last summer.
You can pre-order them on Barnes and Noble.
I'll drop the link in the show notes.
It would meet so pre-orders are gold for authors,
for publishers.
It lets them know essentially how much you can print.
And so the more pre-orders we get,
better the books can be.
More opportunities will get to write volleyball books.
It was really fun.
It's beach and indoor.
I had an absolute blast working on it.
Always fun.
Anytime I get to spend time with Gabby,
just talking to her pretty much on a weekly basis
since last summer.
It's been a blast.
The book itself will come out August 18th.
I believe.
But if you get your pre-orders and now you are guaranteed
to get that as soon as it comes out.
And again, it's just it would mean the world
if you guys could pre-order those books.
So Barnes and Noble, I will drop that link.
It's been so dang fun to work on that.
And that's what I've been doing pretty much every morning
for the last year is just plugging away
on this volleyball for dummies book.
And then we're going to have more updates as it goes
as we get closer to publish data.
I'll have a little YouTube series sort of
giving you guys a little taste of what
you can expect in the book.
And a shout out to everyone who has YouTube channels.
I would just go deep down the rabbit hole
trying to figure out how would I learn how to pass for indoor
for dummies.
And then I'd write that down.
So I'm really excited, really excited about that book.
And I'm really excited to give you guys an update
on the first AVP qualifier.
So the way that these qualifiers work,
16 teams, single elim in the AVP league format
of three sets to 15 each.
You got to win four.
If you win, you punch your ticket, you are in.
So with the women, they're having been also just a quick note.
The audio isn't going to be the best.
This is straight from the iPhone.
Usually I have a little wireless mic here.
Went to plug in, Mike's or dead.
I was at TCU this weekend, didn't charge up the mics.
And so I was actually able to watch the qualifier.
I thought the AVP YouTube stream was pretty high quality.
It's anything you'd want.
Viewership looked pretty solid.
I think it was 41,000 views on court one,
which for YouTube is pretty good.
And so I got to sit down, got to go to the love shack in DFW.
We had about two hours at the airport.
The security lines, by the way, overrated.
We were, there were two people in line.
So all this madness you see, a little overhyped.
So I had like two hours, got a little crispy chicken sandwich
from the love shack.
It was delightful.
And man, I got to watch Miles Partane, my good buddy,
Pompano Futures Dub, right there, you got the metal,
and you got a little surfboard that we want him and Paul Lattman
back together, and they just ran through the field.
Only dropped one set.
That was to Sam Shafter and Johnny Pickett,
a very good team from Canada.
But Lattie, man, a dad of, I think four.
He's got four kids now, and I don't know how much he's training.
What I do know is it doesn't matter because his serve,
as Rich Lamborn said, it is timeless.
And it was fitting that they went out on a walkoff ace,
taken down Cinderella's eight seed,
Evan Corey and Derek Bradford, who put on a tremendous showing,
but 15, 9, 15, 10, kind of a dusting in the finals.
I thought Miles looked fantastic.
I thought he looked energized.
There's something that him and Lattie and just a new partnership
sort of bring out in each other.
They looked like they were having fun.
And I love when Miles has fun.
He's breaking out this new jump serve, scooping balls,
hammering balls, optioning everything.
And of course, he have Lattie, one of the best passers
of this generation indoors or beach.
He made the Olympics as a serving servant
and kind of just an outside he want to put in to pass some nails.
And he was passing nails the entire Saturday
in Manhattan Beach.
So they go out, they win for straight.
They are in the league.
There are now five spots remaining for the men.
On the women, I think one of the most remarkable stories
I've seen in this sport in a long time.
So Betsy Flint just had her second kid at the end of last summer.
A couple of months later, what does she do?
She picks up Kylie DeBurg and they just run rough shot,
sweep their first three opponents,
and then you run into the buzz saw that is Kelly Chang
and Megan Kraft.
To me, you know how I feel about that team,
I think they're one of the best in the world,
easily top three in the world where they swept their first,
swept their second, swept their third.
I think odds on heavy favorites would have been Kelly and Meg.
Well, here come Betsy and Kylie.
Firey team, Betsy is one of the best competitors I know.
Coaching her in Julia a couple of years ago
with my intro to coaching basically,
I loved working with them.
I loved getting a peek behind Betsy's competitive personality
and you saw it out there and she went out,
hits that devilish float down Meg's line, another walkoff ace.
And now you got super mom and Kylie DeBurg
punched in their ticket into the AVP league
and a lot of the attention is going to go to Betsy
because mom of two just not that far out from having a kid,
that recovery is intense from having a kid.
And here comes Betsy and she's as good as she's ever been
and it's not even the first time she's done it.
Right, so in 2021, she has Kora in January,
Kora's her daughter, now her oldest child.
Eight months later, her and Emily Day, now Emily Capers,
they take second and the Manhattan Beach Open,
give April Ross an Alex climate,
a bit of a scare in that final.
So this is just what Betsy does.
She is, I've long called Aurora Davis,
the super mom of Beach volleyball, Betsy Flint,
certified super mom ticket, punched.
And so you might be asking, well,
the numbers aren't really adding up, right?
We had three teams straight in for the women, three qualifiers.
There's two spots left.
How does that shake out?
So last year, and I actually incorrectly wrote this on the recap.
I wrote the recap on the flight back from TCU.
So last year was you take your two out of your best three finishes
and those qualifiers and that's how you get the at large bits.
But they're not doing it strictly on qualifier performance this year,
which Evan Kory actually corrected me on that.
So it is, it's wild cards effectively.
We'll decide the remaining two for the women,
remaining three for the men,
which is based on a combination of factors,
your performance and the qualifiers,
marketability, can you draw attention, fans, et cetera, et cetera.
Which I think, think of that what you will,
if you want it to be a pure meritocracy, I understand.
But if I were the AVP, that's exactly what I would do.
Because you have that conflict with the Brazilian elite
where a handful of teams are going to skip the lead qualifier.
And so you're going to have Kelly and Meg.
They're only going to play two out of three.
Taylor, Crab, Andy, Benish.
I think they're only going to play two out of three.
Or maybe even just one.
And so if you're the AVP, you're going to want to make sure
you get a Taylor and Andy in if it doesn't go the way
that you would want it to go, because Taylor
grabs the most marketable athlete you got in the US.
And you're going to want him in the league.
And so if they don't perform well in that qualifier,
I'm not going to speak for the AVP.
But if I were the SAR of the AVP league,
Fambavi Corvino and Josh Glazbrook,
and those guys, yeah, wild carton, Andy and Tay,
in there if they don't win the next qualifier.
And so it's going to be a subjective decision
from their part who gets those remaining spots
for the teams that don't win in the qualifier.
But Evan Corey and Derek Bradford, they made a hack.

Samakletide injections are 0.5 milligram, 1 milligram,
and 2 milligrams.
Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh,
you saw both 15 seeds, Jacob LeBouliet,
who I played in the quarter finals in Pompedo.
And I was asked him like, man, what'd you come from?
Like, he's an East Coast guy, brand new to beach.
And right now, I mean, he's got to be the most promising
American blocking prospect we've had maybe since Andy.
Perhaps that's some hyperbole,
but he's having an excellent year so far.
Internationally, him and Cody Caldwell
are having a lot of success.
He's picking up the game really quick.
So him and Will Rivera, they take out King Shock
and James Shaw 15 beat the two first round.
They fall in next one, oddly enough, funny enough.
It always works this way.
The universe loves to see partners play each other.
Cody and Wyatt Harrison also having a tremendous year
internationally with Trevor Crabbe.
They take out Jacob and Will.
They take a third, I believe.
Yeah, third place.
So Cody and Wyatt making a pretty good case
for one of those wild cards as well, but LaBouh.
That is a name that you guys need to keep an eye out for.
Whether he makes it into the league or not,
I think that's a rising, a rare, young,
talented American blocker that I am hoping USA invests
and develops because he has been very good.
On the women's side, also saw a 15 beat a two
in Fallon, Fennoy, Moana, and Lindsay Sparks.
They take out the reunited team of Tony Rodriguez
and Molly Shaw, they're back together after winning
those three straight medals in the fall of 2024.
And then Tony, she switched to defense,
playing with Kylie Deberg.
They win that challenge in Shawn Men,
having a great year and then Tony,
injures her shoulder out for the year.
Molly, of course, went to play with Kelly Chang,
had a huge year sort of cemented herself as,
I'm a legit talent.
They want a gold medal in Elite in Brazil.
I believe it was you out Pasoah,
but they lose first round.
And so that's what happens.
These quick sets, the longer you play something out,
the more the favorites are going to be at the advantage.
That's why they always say in sports,
overtime favors the favorited team,
because the longer you play something out,
the more time there is for that favorite team,
the regression to the mean effectively.
But these quick matches meant they are intense.
Anything can happen.
We saw a couple of 11s beaten sixes, 12 beaten five.
And it was just madness.
And it was fun.
Fun to watch on the live stream.
It looked like from the live stream,
there was a pretty decent crowd, a lot of energy.
These single limbs, shoot.
They will draw your attention.
And everyone knows, I love a good double olymp format,
but single olymp qualifiers, there is intense as they get.
And the reason that I love tournament formats,
as opposed to pool play,
is because there's consequences to losing,
and there are rewards to winning in every match.
You double, triple quadruple that,
incentive in a single olymp.
So every single match has do or die consequences,
and moving on and making a case rewards.
And so I'm a fan of watching these single olymp tournaments,
looked like a lot of people were,
as well judging from the crowd and the viewership
on the YouTube channel.
But I believe that sums it up.
Let me double check, make sure I'm not missing anything
from the AVP covered miles and lotty,
covered Betsy, just almost went furry and slipped there.
Not Betsy and Julia, Betsy and Kylie Saturday
was for the 15 seeds covered that.
A lot of upsets, the 12 being the five,
that was Diego Perez, another fun guy to watch,
and left Prima, they took out Troy Field and Ryan Wilcox,
and then we got into the pole positions, so to speak.
So in that third place,
Corinne Quigal, Chloe Lorraine,
coming off a very big year in 2025,
they took third bowed out to Kelly and Megan,
Haley Hardward and Zalani Hodel.
Zalani, another bright young talent at the net for the USA.
They took a third, but again,
it's not a purely meritocratic system this year.
If you don't win, there's last couple spots,
just a couple different factors going into
how the AVP is going to select those.
But again, I think the AVP's doing the right thing.
You only got eight spots in your league.
You wanna make sure that the best,
most exciting teams are in there on a week-to-week basis.
So that'll do for the AVP portion of this Beach Access episode.
It's two o'clock when I'm recording this on Sunday.
So the challenge in Nyerit, Mexico, is still happening,
just giving you a brief update.
They're Sam Codifava and Gianni del Corso.
They are in the finals in Mexico.
They will play a good friend Leon Lwini and Matthew Emmer,
that'll be our finals matchup.
Good to see Sam having some success.
I mean, he's one of the best,
I was getting troll for saying he's one of the best,
everybody's one of the best, something.
So I'm gonna temper that.
He's an exciting defender to watch for Italy.
Had an excellent run with Palo and Nicolai, Palo retires,
and there's this kind of a,
a dearth of really high level blocking prospects in Italy.
Can't fill in the shoes of Palo and Nicolai.
He's top 20 player all the time, to me, I think.
Me and Tinkerin with the idea of doing like a Sandcast 75,
doing the top 75 beach volleyball players of all time.
And I would put Palo, rough draft in the top 20.
The Capacrozo brothers of Argentina,
they will be playing Israel for bronze.
Meanwhile, I'm looking at the scores right now.
Nolt, Maddie Anderson and Elena Chacone,
they are battling a good friend Melanie Paul
and Leah Kunst, good young team from Germany for bronze.
Then you have Verena and Tynara of Brazil,
playing Chinatown, Yeeshaw and her young new partner.
That'll be the gold medal matchup.
So that is kind of where everything stands there
for the AVP, so the women now have four spots left.
Two of those will be determined by the qualifiers,
this upcoming Saturday in Manhattan Beach
and the Saturday after that also in Manhattan Beach.
The men have five spots remaining
to those will be decided in those same qualifiers.
And I'm trying to think we are home this weekend,
so I won't be able to watch all of the AVP.
And then I'll actually be commentating remote
of the Brazilian elite so that it's, we are packed now.
Spring is here, beach volleyball season is officially here.
So that's gonna do it for beach access.
