Supreme Court Guts Voting Rights Act

On April 29th, the Supreme Court just dropped a 6-3 decision in the Weasian of E. Colays,

ruling that the state's Congressional map counts as an an, unconstitutional racial

gerrymander under the Voting Rights Act.

This means the Weasian Alarmakers have to redraw those district lines before the next

elections roll around.

Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the majority, stressing that the Voting Rights Act is meant

to back up the Constitution, not clash with it.

He called out lower courts for pushing states into race-based moves that the Constitution

straight up bans.

Folks are fired up over this.

Rebao Sharpton called it a bullet to the heart of the Voting Rights fight.

Barack Obama said it guts a key part of the act, letting states dilute minority votes

through gerrymandering.

New York Attorney General Latisha James and Ohio Rep. Shantel Brown echoed that, saying

it disrespects the act's history from the Edmund Pettis Bridge.

Now, eyes are on other Republican-led states like Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, Missouri,

Tennessee, and Florida.

They might test similar maps, putting black and Latino voting power at risk ahead of

the midterms.

This ruling tightens the reins on how the Voting Rights Act gets used, setting the stage

for more battles over fair maps in the coming months.
