Tennessee's Old-School Style Advances to Sweet Sixteen

On March 23rd, Tennessee punched its ticket to the Sweet 16 in March madness with a 79-72

win over Virginia.

This March's head coach, Rick Barnes, is 10th trip to this stage in his career and is

fourth straight year doing it with the volunteers.

The Vols leaned on an old school inside game, taking just 19 three point shots out of 55

field goal attempts.

That approach wore down Virginia, sending three of their players to four fouls each, while

Tennessee stayed mostly out of trouble.

Barnes grew up playing without a three point line, and still preaches balance, hard screens,

and ball movement.

He loved seeing his team rack up 20 assists on 26 made baskets, playing to everyone's strengths

without relying on outside shooting.

He's been coaching since 1977, starting at a prep school before hitting the college

ranks and leading programs at places like George, Mason, Clemson, Texas, and now Tennessee.

Next up, Tennessee faces Iowa State on Friday night with a shot at the Elite 8, sticking

to that gritty style that got them here.
