So this health learners go from I can't hear the difference between Sure! and sure? too that just sounds wrong without ever doing it tone drill again now reason number three You should listen to passive Chinese and your dead time is that it beats the forgetting curve without effort so here's something that's going to kick you in the gut Herman Ebing house The psychologists to discover the forgetting curve proved that humans lose about half of newly learned information Educating in the background with zero added effort sha

要主erness 更厲害 出補一下 所以就次別筋了 但是沒有熱情 你對一人 doctrines 二分之一 prime啦 我之前聽見了 道おり上來說 您認真運動時 相信我這節的一節 不可能去改善 你 savior 旦沒有什麼 沒有一個人嫌棄 但時間可以 algo 般開始算 我們 team 輝其 prediction 真的被記知道 真的走出了 此 Subscribe proved 我們影片下去 結束為大家追究 計劃穿你 女同歸ięcy 他说什么 然后 by the way passive listening without any study is not the solution here it's not what I'm suggesting I'm not suggesting that you don't learn characters or see words or learn how to read I'm saying that if you only do that and you don't do passive listening you're not going to

activate the material nearly as quickly the same goes for vice versa if you only did passive listening and did no learning of characters and no reading and no building up your vocabulary it will be very ineffective usually people tend to focus on only one or the other these need to be done in tandem by the way if you have a Bluetooth speaker and like an old phone you don't use anymore fill it with a bunch of Chinese audio turn the volume to 1 so that it is playing all the time and just keep it playing 24-7 easiest immerse you could ever get now the fifth reason you should be sure to use passive listening during your dead time is that every day without it is another day that your new vocabulary is slipping away so let's flip the perspective here for a second every character you learn every word every sentence pattern without exposure your brain has been sort of scientifically proven to forget about half of it within days as I mentioned before so if you study for an hour dead and then close the app and have zero Chinese and you're for the next 23 hours you know you're building but you're not building very well you're filling a bucket

that has a hole in it right and I like to think of it by analogy to keeping water warm so if you get water to boiling but then you turn the heat off entirely it goes cold but if you get the water boiling just keep low heat on it throughout the day it stays simmering so I've watched this happen with so many learners they put in the active study time they show up they do the reviews and six months later they feel like they've made almost zero progress they get demoralized and they start questioning whether or not they're bad at languages but they're not bad at languages they were just leaking their study session was filling the bucket and the other 23 hours of the day were draining it passive listening plugs the hole so it's not about adding more time it's about not losing the time now the sixth reason that you should fill your dead time passive listening is that by skipping this you'll be the person with a 400-day streak and nothing to show for it I want you to picture this because it happens constantly in the Mandarin and different community learners come to us with a 400-day or 500-day streak on something like Dueling Go

or Hello Chinese hundreds of days of consistent practice and they followed all the advice they were consistent they built the habit man and they have basically nothing to show for it and they can't have a conversation they can't read a paragraph they can't follow a native speaker at normal speed and this is of course a bummer but you know it's worse than that? they feel like they're the problem they start believing they're just bad at languages because they did what everyone told them to they were consistent and it didn't work because here's the truth consistency is only valuable when you're consistent with the right thing and the right thing has to include massive volume of input your ears getting trained your brain getting exposed your tone sense getting built it's the only place it can realistically happen in your dead time so if you're only consistent inside a gamified app for 10 minutes a day with no real listening exposure, you're going to be the person with a year of streaks and a beginner's vocabulary and that's a brutal place to be so the fix is unsexy it doesn't have a streak counter

it doesn't ping you with confetti it's just earbuds in Chinese on while you live your life now the seventh reason you should fill your dead time with passive that you will always, always feel behind if you don't. Here's the part the most busy professionals never make peace with you will never ever have enough time to study Chinese. You got to work you got family you got the gym, inbox kids, the dogs, the dishes, the appointments every Sunday night you tell yourself this week I'll find an extra hour for Chinese and by Tuesday it's gone. By Thursday you feel guilty. By Sunday, you feel like you're failing. This is exactly what the survey data shows. The top three things are that they struggle with. Over and over are time consistency and motivation. And they're all the same problem wearing different shirts. They all come from the same root trying to add Chinese to a life that's already full. The passive listening solves this at the architecture level. If you stop adding Chinese to your life, you start layering Chinese into the life you're already living. So you're not finding new time. You can't find new time. You're converting existing

time. You're taking the most pedestrian autopilot dead moments in your day, the drive, the dishes, the dog walk, and turning them into language practice. If you keep refusing to do this, you're going to keep feeling behind. Not because you're lazy, not because you're about at Chinese, but because the math will never work. There aren't enough free hours in your dedicated study time to reach fluency in a reasonable amount of calendar days. And another point about it not being because you're lazy, I mean passive listening during your dead time is about as lazy as it gets. Right? It's just playing in the back-crap. If you don't even have to really focus on it and necessarily, obviously you have focused study time, but this is not about that. This is about all the rest of the time. So the math only works if you fill your dead time with all that passive listening. But there is one more reason that maybe I should have said first because I actually trumps everything else. It's the one that decides whether you actually become a fluent Chinese speaker or just staying beginner partitory forever. So the final reason that you should fill your dead time with passive listening is that it will make your identity very clear. So the

final reason that you should fill your dead time with passive listening is that you should fill your identity shift. The learners we coach who actually become fluent. Not someday, but predictably make a simple decision. I am a Chinese learner. One of our top performing members went from level 1 to 18, about 10 weeks, hundreds of characters, words and sentences mastered, learning for an hour or less each day. When his coach asked him why he didn't talk about willpower, he didn't talk about hacks. He said this. I'm solving his studies Chinese every day. That's just who I am now. That's the whole secret. And here's your passive listening because the most powerful tool you have because identity isn't built around your study sessions only. Those are probably just an hour a day. Identity is built in the other 15 hours you're awake. The hours where you choose what you will fill your ears with. So when Chinese is playing while you cook dinner, you're not just practicing. You're casting a vote for who you are. Every time you reach for those earbuds, you're telling yourself, I'm a person who learns Chinese not someday, not when I have time, but I'm trying to

learn how to learn Chinese not someday, not when I have time, now while I live. So the learner who only studies their 60 minute session is a person who takes a Chinese class. The learner whose ears are full of Mandarin all day every day is a person who gets fluent. So these are two very different people. And only one of them really is very likely to get fluent. Maybe the person wanted to have some fluent in like 20 years. So if you skip this, if you keep treating Chinese as something that happens in a window of the day when you lose the listening reps, you lose the identity. And without the identity, motivation eventually dies. So every learner who quits quits because they never crossed that line. So don't lose it. Plug your earbuds in, start today, start during your drive home from work. Your next walk, your next workout, Chinese and your ears, always. That's how this works.
