About this episode

The Herd with Colin Cowherd is made possible by:

DC IS BACK with a brand new episode of The Daniel Cormier Show, this time sitting down with boxing superstar Ryan Garcia ahead of his WBC welterweight title fight against British boxing star Conor Benn! Garcia calls out Benn for "being a b**ch" for speaking on his weight cut, and says there "are levels" to this fight game and Conor is not on his level. Ryan talks about the matchup and why he's sure he can break him down in the first five rounds because Benn's style will feed into his gameplan. Plus, hear DC and Garcia talk about fighting from seven years old, sleeping in cars, why he doesn't like fighting outside the ring, the Devin Haney fight, his massive popularity on streaming and social media, and so much more!

This is an I Heart Podcast. Guaranteed Human. On the new podcast, Solita, we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman. I can wait four hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle. I choose option B. I'm Julie Pinero and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word Solita, trading the pity for possibility. Listen to Solita on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. The volume. Daniel! Call the man in the world! Alright guys welcome to a brand new episode of the Daniel Cormier show brought to you by Total Wireless, the official wireless provider of UFC. UFC fans need 5G data that won't tap out.

Real UFC fans need real unlimited. Today I'm joined by the one and only Ryan Garcia. Ryan Garcia, what's up man? What's good bro? How you doing brother? Amazing, how you doing? Good man, good thank you so much for doing this bro. Appreciate it. Now I appreciate you having me on. Yeah man we're gonna jump right into it. You are one of the most decorated guys in boxing. 25 fights are wins. 20 knockouts in your career. You're on the verge of another big fight. How are you feeling right now as we get ready for you headlining? T-Mobile arena, another world championship fight. Something that would seem to be more normal but it's as big as anything we can do in sport every single time we do it. Yeah I mean I'm just tuned in. I'm very focused and just taking the momentum of my last fight into this one. It wasn't much time off so I'm super sharp.

I don't have any rough edges so I'm just prepared to do what I do. You know you two guys don't seem to get along very good. I know boxing there's a lot of talking but is there really bad blood between you and Connor Ben? I wouldn't say so I wouldn't say there's bad blood but I don't really know him so I don't really care for him. You know it's kind of more I see him as an opponent in front of me and I have to make sure that I take everything he does away from him. As a guy that's done this for so long in your career. He started boxing his youngest seven years old Victorville California which by the way I live in Gilroy. So I've been to Victorville with my kids wrestling and everything. How do you stay so in love with this sport that has given you so much? I think just always having that competitive edge you know that's just how I've always been since I was little.

And you know I have this championship now it's something that I have to protect so I'm making sure that I stay consistent and not really let up on anything. So I'm super hyper aware of everything that's going on and I feel great. You know I found it very interesting Ryan you said something like while you've always been a boxer in a fighter you didn't necessarily like that. You know what I mean? I mean I'm not necessarily like to fight in the streets are you almost terrified of fighting in the streets. Nick Diaz once called me or Nate Diaz called me not a fighter. He said I'm more of a competitor because while I will fight in competition I'm not that fighter in the streets. How did you how early did you recognize that and how did you form like how did you handle that right because there's something in eight inside of you that makes you a fighter. How were you able to keep it so separate right where only in the sport you're willing to engage in those types of ways.

Well I think that it was more so pointing to my childhood you know I was very sensitive kid kind of more just more conscious and a lot of the kids they wanted to be you know trouble makers and they wanted to get after me because of either the way I looked or. Because I fought and it was something I was very unfamiliar with I was boxing since I was seven so all I knew was a controlled chaos and this was this was a free for all so it took time for me to realize that. That you know. The right move is to be the best at your sport you don't get paid to fight on the street it's kind of you know to really engage in that and throughout the years you know I was forced to fight at times on you know on the streets.

And even when I did fight in the streets all I did was open hand slapped somebody I couldn't I couldn't bring myself to punch them with my face I still haven't to this day punch somebody with my fist bear knuckle just because I was afraid what I would do to them not so much what they would do to me and I want every fight slapping people so i'm pretty pretty happy about that right isn't amazing know how these guys did they think they're so tough on the streets and they feel like babies. Whenever they like try to actually fight someone that's straight they feel like babies i've been I've been having people try to fight me at times and they just kind of throw them down they don't feel like they know anything they don't feel like any type of strength or any threat. No at all because most people don't know how intense a fight really is they'll be gassed out within 20 seconds 30 seconds and then it would be kind of be messed up what we do to them after that yeah and I never really wanted to do that. You know why why take advantage of something you know you could just do that's kind of in a little bit irresponsible as the as the athlete.

Right I read somewhere where it said that you and your dad would travel everywhere to these competitions when you were a kid at times the expenses were so great that you guys would sleep in cars. Did you recognize that as a kid did you feel pressure to make it in this sport did you feel an added pressure to become the world champion and the global superstar that you are today. I just showed me no excuses you know where there's a will there's a way we have we had a lot of passion and a lot of determination and. Every situation can be figured out and that's kind of what my family taught me and what I took from it you know like okay. Don't cry and complain and bitch you don't got nothing just go do it you know we don't have a gym for we training the garage you know and we didn't really have a hotel or money for a hotel so we slept in the car cool we're still going to beat your ass you know I think the day you know so it kind of just taught me that like you're just.

Still going to get your ass with we're going to figure out what you still going to get that as well. I'll have those experiences from your childhood having that restraint having to go through those hard times how have that formed you into the man in the fight it that you are today. It just showed me that you know what all these other dudes were quote unquote blessed with you know for example Connor Ben you know dad that. I had a lot of success from the sport and was able to you know show them the ropes that wow like it's amazing what you you know as somebody that doesn't have anything what what you're really capable of as a human you know and. Now that I have stuff then to my to my you know the blessings that I have wow like my love was even a crazy for more so it's only made me feel like.

Things were meant for that reason to build me to make my character strong to face these challenges to to know that you know whatever buddies opinions is can't determine you know what happens in that night. On the new podcast solita we share the messy reality of traveling alone as a woman I can wait for hours for the next bus or this random dude is offering me a ride on his motorcycle I choose option B I'm Julie Beniero and I travel by myself because it's a rare space where I can say yes without asking anyone else first. I'm on a mission to reclaim the word solita trading the pity for possibility. Every time I tried to be alone I kept meeting people they were like you smiled at us not a lot of people smile around here. It's when you're alone that you're most receptive to the world as it is and not the lies you're sold about it it can be a time where you push your limits change your mind or wake up to a new version of yourself.

Whether you're a solo travel veteran or you're too nervous to book your first trip I hope you listen to solita on the I heart radio app Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. You know you're fighting kind of been this weekend what do you make of him coming down to a way class that he has not fought at in a really long time and I was speaking to him a little earlier and he said that part of the obligation you have not made because he said that you are not. He said that you're struggling with the weight but he said that he's the guy that's been bigger for a longer time what do you make in those words and what do you make of him and how do you feel operate at a weight class that he has not competed in a long time. I mean he's a bitch you know I think the day I mean he's just straight bitch everybody got a cut weight I didn't put a rehydration clause on he's going to be damn near 170 up in that ring so I don't know what he's bitching about or what's he saying but I'm not. I'm not struggling at all this is easy work you know this part of the job you cut weight for a day or two get way in rehydrate and get to work on but you know he's been saying that he'll go up to 168 after this fight.

So he's making excuses already as you can see you know it's not it doesn't take somebody that smart to notice that he set it up the excuse is okay though. Ryan why didn't you put in a rehydration clause I see that in so many fights in boxing why why did you feel that it's not necessary this kind of just not seem to be that big of a threat. I mean you are a very talented skilled boxer but obviously he can be bigger than you when you guys step inside of the ring. I want him at his best and I want him to feel that you know he got all his power he needs to face me but. I mean I don't put a rehydration clause because I just don't feel like that should be part of the game you know it's already unhealthy to cut weight and then now you're going to make them not rehydrate properly. It's a bit unhealthy but you know it don't matter what he does he could come in 180 it is he's not he's not at my level and it's not no really shot at him I just have been playing the game much longer than him and.

I have all the attributes that are better than him he has a puncher's chance he's going to try to hurt me that's the all that's basically all he can do so. You have been in this spot in so many times over the course of your career to me the dev and Haiti fight was probably the most impressive fight in the way that you put it on him was actually unexpected and to a lot of people at least outside of it when you look back on your career like what do you think was the best performance that you have had the performance that you look to top this weekend and T mobile arena. My last fight Barrios you know it was pretty complete there I like my performance for fortuna I controlled range perfectly I like my performance against Luke Campbell where I was able to apply pressure on him the whole night into I knocked him out what other performance do or take this guy fought the word day he was a pressure fighter and kept them out.

Side the range and then ultimately knocked him out I think my last fight I think I'm going to top that one but this one's going to be filled with more violence. This guy he's going to be coming all night is this is Taylor made for me I'm I'm going to just be hitting him with with brutal shots and he's not going to be able to touch me this fight is going to be one of my best performance ever you're going to see the level of sharpness you're going to see me in my prime. When you're in your prime and you know you know you're at your highest level you know how it feels it's like all right you're about to see something nasty. Ryan you have 13 million Instagram followers you are a very popular guy what do you think that what do you think it is that makes people so drawn to you obviously you're a massive star in the fight game but why do you think people relate to you so great and why are they so drawn. To Ryan Garcia not only the fighter but Ryan Garcia the person.

Well I mean I'm just able to maneuver and kind of. I can't I guess they think like you're authentic yeah I'm authentic in every aspect as in when I'm. When I'm streaming I know how to have fun there when i'm you know I know how to compartmentalize things you know everybody's all trying to be the tough guy i'm here I know when to be tough you know I know when to be brave and I think that's. No one that's being a good leader and being a focused person you know shit I love being on stream that's just fun but when it's time to handle business it's time to handle business when it's time to make an Instagram video I know how to do that you know i'm just a man of many talents I guess. You could say and i know my favorite game is boxing though that's always been my passion and it's my favorite game to play because. She who doesn't want to be the best at throwing hands you know yeah that's always been just kind of in you you know it's kind of nature almost in a way.

That's why people are so drawn to the fight like everybody the box the football player the basketball player they all love the boxer because hey Ryan everybody wants to be able to fight they just can't. Hey hey hey no especially when it gets to high level it's like oh you thought you you thought you were. So last one for me I saw somewhere that you said five rounds you get him out or break him within five rounds is that still the idea that after five rounds you will be able to do whatever you want to him and get him out of it yeah see as I feel like by round five I should have already broken his spirit or his mind or his consciousness one of them is going to break. Yeah unbelievable thank you for joining man guys Ryan Garcia fights kind of been this weekend T mobile arena do not miss it Zufo boxing so happy to have you guys all fighting this weekend it is going to be amazing they got everything guys they got the bad blood they got the skills this is going to be a tremendous fight until next time tap into everything Ryan Garcia is doing his streaming his Instagram all of the socials is due to the real deal until next time peace.
