The Falcons must get creative with their pass rush

I'd like to talk about one of the most interesting topics in my opinion about the Falcons going into week one, which is how the hell is this Atlanta team going to generate a pass rush?

2:05We know that losing Jalen Walker, who is probably going to be their top edge Russia, probably their best run defender on the edge as well. He was a critical piece. They're not going to have him this year. It's a big deal. Obviously, it's going to change a lot of things for this team. James Perse Jr. 8 game suspension, he will not be available for half the season. So they will have to find a way to make this work and tell James Perse Jr. gets back. Once he returns, they'll be a lot better up front with the pass rush. But until then, it's going to be incredibly limited. And if you look at this Falcons' Edrum today, it is probably the worst in the NFL. I mean, obviously, your top two guys are both gone. So a lot of teams are going to look terrible with their top two guys gone. The Falcons get sederious, Smith, the veteran in the building. We don't know what he can offer. I certainly hope that he is efficient. You know, I think I looked at what his pace would have been last year until he retired for

3:08personal reasons during the season, you know, in a more consistent role. I think Zadaria Smith could be like a six and a half to eight sack type of guy. Six to eight sacks. He's a good run defender to a solid player, probably like a number two or a number three for a good pass rush. But he's going to have to be the number one here. And I certainly hope the time off has helped him stay fresh and all of those things. I'm certainly interested to see what we can get from Zadaria Smith. Other than him, you know, they're really going to struggle to generate pass rush off the edge and they're going to have to get creative to find ways to do it. The good news, of course, is that they have Nate Oli who's great at coaching up defensive linemen, edge rushers, everyone getting getting them ready to go and on the right page, especially as pass rushers. We also know Jeff Olbrick is a little bit of a mad scientist with his pressure packages in the way he could generate pressure without relying on four rushers. And the Falcons, unfortunately, are not going to be able to rely on four rushers against all, but the worst offensive

4:11lines in the NFL. So I certainly hope for good things from Samson, Ebu came. I thought he was solid. This training camp at preseason, but you know, he last time we saw him play a healthy season, he was a 10 sack guy. So maybe that's like our ace in the hole. But if that doesn't pan out, it's going to be a long year trying to rush for. They're not going to be able to get away with that. So what they're going to have to do, of course, they're going to get pressure from the inside. We know their interior defensive line is pretty good, but they're going to have to generate it with a lot of creative butses. But also, I think they're going to lean on the unique talents of a couple of their linebackers similar to what they did with Kaden Ellis last year. And I know with Ellis's departure, people were wondering, Oh, well, maybe Jalen Walker will do some of that stuff. Harold Perkins was drafted. Maybe he'll do some of that stuff. You see, Rob Dula, the new waiver claim. Maybe he'll do some of that stuff. That's going to be a key component, but there's more to it than that. We're going to get to all that on today's show. And I think it's one of the more fascinating things to see how exactly does Jeff Ulbrich and this defense generate

5:15pass rush. They're going to have to get creative. They're going to have to do some exciting things to make this work because otherwise they're going to have a really, really tough time doing this. But yeah, guys, before we dive into that, I want to bring you real quick work. Of course, from Feindool, you know, it is week one week one is here. And we're not going to go to the week one on Zuck's. We got all week to get to that. We're going to have a nice preview with Jared Bailey from behind the steel curtain, the espination. Steeler's site. He's got his own show as well. We'll be talking about this game a lot more in depth later in the week. But until then, I want to take a look at the current projections for this Falcon team in terms of win totals. And you know, the thing the vibes have continued to deteriorate. You know, let's be honest. These Falcons are currently the top odds, of course, are for over six and a half wins right now. That is minus 135 and under seven and a half wins is minus 145. So, you know, pretty much the same odds

6:21over seven and a half wins is plus 125. So, if your thoughts on this team haven't changed, you still feel like this is an eight win team or better. You can get plus money on that now. So, definitely take a look at that. Consider that. Or if you think this team is going to be terrible, you can get this team under six and a half wins. And they will be that's plus 115. So, you still get plus money on that. So, if you're off the ship entirely, those are the odds to watch for this Falcon team with thanks again to Fandall for sponsoring the show. So, right away, like starting with the edge room, we know it's Zidarius Smith. They're probably going to see just how much he can play, but you know, at his age, he's going to be a rotational guy. I do think he offers something as a run defender too, but they may just have to save him for pass for stands because they just don't have any other great options there. Samson Ebu came is going to be a starter and play a lot. Cameron Thomas going to play a lot too. He's more of that run defending edge, but he is a solid pressure generator, not necessarily a great sec creator, but someone that's going to play a lot too. The wild card here is of course Jared Ivy, who we haven't really seen play at all in the NFL.

7:25You know, came into came in as a UDFA with the Seahawks last year. Didn't correct the Seahawks rotation, which isn't exactly an indictment of him, but big, long sort of tweener edge, three four defensive and type of guy. Don't know what they envision for him there, but he's the guy who's on the roster right now. So there's only four true edge wrestlers on this roster. So he's going to be active and probably play right away. So we'll see how he gets worked in. But to me, it seems like the Falcons are going to be more leaning on this room to bolster their run defense. These are going to be the bigger ends, maybe other than Samson Ebu came, who's going to be more of that standup pressure. Everybody else here, I think is going to be more hand in the dirt, but they're going to rotate. We'll see. I think a lot of that they're kind of going bigger with these edge wrestlers, probably to to be able to play the run better, you know, maybe part of the idea is if like if we can't generate passwords with four, we'd better at least be able to stop the run with four. So we're going to be able to let's go that route at the very least. And I think, you know, these these players that they've got here are all pretty good run defenders. So that that's going to be helpful in that regard. Moving into the interior, this is where they're going

8:31to be hoping to have the edge. Obviously, Brandon Dorless was leading the NFC in sacks among interior defensive linemen until his injury finished with eight and a half didn't play the full season. That's already an outstanding season in terms of sack production and pressure production for Brandon Dorless. He might play a little on the edge too. We'll see. I can't imagine that's going to be a big role for him, but we did see a bit of that in training camp. Um, Lake Hill London kind of is involved here as well. He's probably going to be their main rotational guy doing a little bit of everything. They traded for Gervon Dexter Sr from the Bears who has been consistently one of the most productive past rushing nose tackles in the NFL. Um, you know, he is a big player, uh, big, long, great past rush production, you know, tons of pressures. The sacks have been hit or miss, but that's pretty common for a nose tackle. You know, you're not always going to be finishing the play from that position. But um, Gervon Dexter is a really nice addition, probably one that should be getting more hype. I think Gervon Dexter immediately starts here.

9:35And will be the nose tackle and pretty, you know, until he can't play nose tackle anymore, right? Then Mason Smith probably rotates in at that point, maybe to Sean Hand. But um, you know, I think that starting three is probably going to be Gervon Dexter and Brandon Dorless most of the time. And then depending on the situation, maybe it's to Sean Hand. He returned to practice last a week. So that's great to see. I think he's going to be one of their top run defenders. Uh, like, Hey, London, again, another guy that can do a little bit of everything in the Mason Smith. I think he's their developmental guy. They seem to really like what they've seen from him. But I thought against the run still really struggles to take on double teams and take on a lot of power despite his size. He's got, he doesn't play with the best leverage. He's very good at getting into the back field. He's very explosive, great penetration style nose, but not really a holdup against the run style nose. So Gervon Dexter is going to be a little bit of an upgrade. I think over what Mason Smith is at this point, but maybe some, maybe someday, maybe someday this season, Mason Smith will grow into a bigger role. Maybe they end up moving him more to like a four i type

10:38of player or a three tech given that he's been so good at doing the penetration stuff. Um, but we'll see. But I think the fuck is a really leaning on this interior to be the strength, hoping, hoping that they can kind of build out from there. Maybe put a little bit less on the edge room to kind of pick up the slack here and sort of hoping that they can kind of cobble together some kind of pass rush, some, some system. I mean, again, we know Brandon Duelist is a great interior pass, Russia. Gervon Dexter is going to give them nice push in the middle as well. Maybe that will make things a little bit easier. We'll flush the quarterback out to the edges. Maybe those guys will have a little bit of an easier time getting the sack. Um, then they would otherwise. And, you know, obviously, the hope is that the, the run defense on the interior can be a lot better this season. Then it was last year where it was kind of a constant problem. Um, you know, the team did get rid of Zach Harrison, who did eventually returned to the practice squad, have to imagine it's health-related. Maybe he will be sort of ready to go at some point and back. I think he's a big boost when he is

11:41healthy and here. So hopefully that will be sooner rather than later. But in the meantime, they're going to have to make do with what they have. And what they have still is pretty good. All right, moving on to probably the more creative part of this, it's just how are they going to deploy these linebackers to kind of bolster the past rush in the meantime. And right away you see Harold Perkins Jr. and you're like, this guy is a past rush specialist. This is what he did best in college, right? And I think Harold Perkins Jr. is by necessity going to be a much bigger part of the past rush than it was anticipated when he was drafted late, right? Harold Perkins is a good past rush where we saw him deployed as an outside linebacker in the preseason deployed as a A-GAP blitzer.

13:44They're going to try to get this guy on the field probably in passing situations and give him an opportunity to create havoc to get out there. He moves super well. I think he could be a QB Spy in some situations. I think he can do that sort of stuff. The only issue with Hill Perkins is you don't really want him doing a ton of off-ball stuff like if you're dropping him in coverage or you know asking him to stop the run, not really his game yet. I think he did show some growth in preseason, especially in coverage, something that it's a work in progress for him. But what you really want to do is just cut him loose at the quarterback. He's really talented there. That is a special trait of his. You know, I'm kind of surprised even though as an off-ball linebacker, he's got a lot of room to develop and grow. Kind of surprised he lasts as long as he died. That's going to be an early day three player. The fact is they're going to need to look like geniuses with this one because they probably need Perkins to play outside linebacker for them right away. And again, it's probably going to be a third down focused role. Probably not going to see Harold Perkins out there much in run defense or coverage. But I think they could take advantage of

14:49his skill set in a way that bolsters the pass rush. Effectively, we know he's a good blitzer. We know he can rush off the edge. He's done that a lot too. Yes, he's undersized. So you're going to need to get him in wide nine and give him opportunities to run around offensive tackles. If he just gets, he's going to get stoned while the fucus goes one on one with an offensive tackle. But you look at how the Falcons are structuring their defensive front. They're doing more of these three, four looks. They're going to try to demand double teams or reach that offensive tackle with their big ends instead of making him instead of giving that offensive tackle an easy path to just taking out the wide nine rusher. They're going to do things to try to open up opportunities for guys like Harold Perkins. Also, you see a Ravdula who the team claimed off waivers. Now this is a guy that's a little bit interesting because he's he's listed as a linebacker. You know, again, came out of college as an undersized edge rusher. He was about six one two 40, you know, relatively short arms for the position, but athletic, not necessarily super bendy, but fast. He ran a four four seven

15:56good ten yard split explosive player. Really productive college edge rusher, even though he was undersized. And if is there anyone that reminds you of maybe Harold Perkins Jr. for example, yeah, kind of does, right? I think you see, you're of Dula and Harold Perkins are probably a similar player at this stage. You know, I wonder if he's sort of a backup for Harold Perkins Jr. He's also been a good special teamer. He was with Jacksonville for several years. But yeah, you see, you're of Dula, despite being listed as a linebacker, he played entirely almost outside three four linebacker like past rusher, edge rusher type stuff for Jacksonville when he did get on the field, and he also did a lot of special teams. But I have to imagine that of Dula has a similar path ahead here. They like that he can do some of the same stuff, probably that Harold Perkins does maybe give them a little bit more juice speed rush potential as compared to their sort of bigger ends and tell someone like James Pierce Jr. returns to the lineup. They might have to cobble it together with guys like Perkins and your syrup, Dula, letting those guys rush.

17:00In terms of the rest of the linebacking court, divine Diablo can blitz. They're probably not going to have him do that a ton just because he's so good in coverage and run defense and everything else. They probably want him mostly playing the mic and sitting back there a little bit more. But we've seen him rush very effectively. That is something in his tool belt, Kendall Daniels, can blitz too. I think he's probably going to be playing the most snaps next to divine Diablo. So all of these guys, Christian Harris too, these guys can all blitz. They can all do stuff as past rushers. It's going to be fascinating to see how much do we see Harold Perkins in your syrup lined up as the outside linebackers not necessarily playing off ball because they just need these guys to get they need to get you somewhere. And if that means playing some undersized guys, maybe that's the best way to get past rush. You know, it's worth a shot. They're going to have to get creative. That's kind of the crux of this whole episode. They're going to have to find ways to generate this past rush. And I think that one of the best ways to do that, obviously, is to get creative with your blitz packages. Maybe put some unexpected guys out there. The A gaps, maybe white

18:03nine opportunities. And you know, let them let them pin their ears back. Hopefully again, if the run defense is good, the coverage is good. You can get some third and long opportunities. And that's the perfect situation for a Harold Perkins junior to get out there and chase down the quarterback. Don't have to worry about the run on third and 15, right? I mean, unless they get like a 15-year draw, which that should never happen. So that yet there's there's opportunities here. I think for these guys to have bigger roles as past rushers than probably anyone initially anticipated. So I'm looking forward to seeing how those guys are deployed. But it's not the only creative past rush we're going to see is the linebackers guys, because we got corners and safety's here that can also rush the past. So the final place that we'll see the Falcons January pass, where they've been effective at doing this for a couple of years now is in the secondary slot blitzes safety blitzes. This team is not afraid to send a little unorthodox pressure to be a little risky because of how good the back end should be with Xavier Watts with Jesse Bates back there. I think they have a lot of faith in these safeties to keep a lid on things to make sure that there's no explosives getting given up. They have a lot of trust in those guys. They're going to be able to get a little bit more aggressive maybe with their slot corner. I think that's a big reason why we're seeing this team lean more towards guys like avion terrell, very physical, very effective blitzing player. And he's going to probably get the starting nod here

21:12at the slot. Billy Bowman came off pup. He is on the active roster. It seems like his return might be imminent too. So that's cool. You know, at this point, it seems like it's going to be avion starting. Maybe Billy Bowman is the dime corner. Maybe he gets in in certain packages. You mean, we'll see. But I think the slot blitz is going to be a part of this password on a consistent basis. I also think Sidney Brown, when Brown is on the field, he's a he's someone who blitzed a little bit in his day, not a ton, but I do I do wonder if that's someone that they're interested in seeing blitz a little bit. But ultimately, I think we're going to see some some chaos here. We're going to see some crazy stuff by the mad scientist Jeff Olbrick trying to generate pressure in any way that he can. I think at the end of the day, between the slot blitzes, between the ag app stuff, between maybe getting some of these linebacker outside linebacker hybrid guys lined up on the wide nine out, you know, getting these guys some opportunities in obvious passing situations. They're going to need this interior to be dominant. I think they're putting a lot of eggs in that basket. Like if this

22:16thing ends up working out, it'll probably be because the interior is dominating from a password standpoint. And that's making everything easier for everybody else. The end of the day, I think the biggest concern is still that just the edge room just doesn't have a lot of juice. It's a lot of big run defenders and Zadaria Smith, whatever he can offer. So I'm praying for just Zadaria Smith to regain his former glory, be like an eight to 10 sack guy. And in that scenario, especially once James Pure Jr. goes back and hate games, you're probably cooking at that point, like between Zadaria Smith and James Pure Jr. Everything else we've talked about at that stage, you're probably okay. But until James Pure's goes back, it's going to be pretty concerning. I think the edge room, like Samson Iboucam, I'm hoping that that's also going to be better, you know, healthier this year. You know, Cam Thomas, good preseason, but not necessarily known as a great pastor, so Jared Ivey total question mark. Don't know what's going to happen there. Maybe it's really going to be my son Khalid Karim, finally returning to this team, which did happen, by the way, guys. Khalid Karim was signed to the

23:19practice squad last week. So I'm excited to see Khalid Karim's return because I think this man, you know, this could be the answer to our problems. You had a good preseason with the giants. I hope we see Cleared Cream soon because I think we need a pretty bad. Always just been a solid player whenever you got on the field. So in the meantime, though, I think that's kind of what they're going to have to do. They're going to have to get creative with how they deploy their secondary with how they deploy their linebackers are going to have to really stretch the past rushing talent of the players on this roster and just lean on this interior to kind of pave the way, create chaos, get quarterbacks off their spot. Even if it's not translate to turn them sex, if they can just get that interior pressure forced the quarterback out of the pocket, I get some guys that's very effective. I get some guys are just going to take off and run.

26:24The dog is left to have an answer for that when that happens. But it's at least it's a strategy, I think. Like what they're putting together, there's like concepts of a plan here, you know, right? We'll see how that plays out week one. Going to be a good opportunity against Aaron Rodgers who's not the most mobile guy anymore. Steelers having their own issues with their offensive line and such. So, you know, this is an opportunity, perhaps, for this Falcon's defense to surprise a little bit. But at the end of the day, they're going to have to figure it out because if there's no past rush, it doesn't matter how good the secondary is. And I think the secondary can be pretty good. And that's another thing. The secondary can cover for four seconds, right? Then that's going to help a lot. The secondary can cover for five seconds. It's going to help a lot. So, maybe that's another thing that contributes to this whole defense, being better than the sum of its parts. We know that Obrich knows how to do this and has it times the fact that the Falcons set a franchise record in Saks last year. This was not the most talented defensive line this team has had, not even close. So, the fact that they were going to

27:25be able to get that many Saks, generate as much pressure as they did with I think a sort of middling cast should really tell you how impressive the job, Nate Olley and Jeff Obrich did last year was. I don't think they're going to be able to match that production. Obviously. But if they can just get in the 40s for Saks and do some, you know, creative stuff with their pressure packages, I think that could be enough for this to be serviceable past rush to at least keep the defense from completely falling apart. So, that's my thoughts on the matter. I do think this is one of the most interesting things to watch over the first few weeks of the season, how the Falcons, how they want to do this thing. I'm not sure. So, we're all going to learn together starting with week one on Friday.
