Early free agency has started and the Jacksonville Jaguars have focused on retention.
We'll talk about that today here on Locked On Jaguars.
You are locked on Jaguars.
Your daily Jacksonville Jaguars podcast.
Part of the Locked On podcast network, your team every day.
It is your team every day here on Locked On Jaguars.
We thank you for making us your first listen.
I'm Tony Wiggins, the host of the Locked On Jaguars podcast that is found here
on Locked On podcast network, the number one sports podcast network.
We are absolutely glad to have you here.
Shout out to the everydayers who join us each and every day.
I, the early tampering period and free agency has already started 19 minutes into this thing
and teams for signing people.
That's the fastest negotiation I've ever seen, by the way.
You got 19 minutes to start and finish.
We're just joking.
We're being sarcastic.
We know this stuff has been going on and talks have been going on all weekend.
We'll run it down for you here from a Jaguars perspective
and let you know exactly what is going on.
First and foremost, Dennis Gardek and Monterey Brown have been retained by the Jacksonville Jaguars
who will look at both of those signings.
The edge value league wide is still super high right in the middle of the show
and at the end, wait for it.
I'll tell you what that is when we get there.
All right, but let's get to the top of what has gone on so far for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
This weekend, there was discussions that the Jaguars took a look
and wanted to find out what the deal was with the Raiders and Max Crosby.
Did not happen Max Crosby went to the Baltimore Ravens?
Cool.
Now we hear that maybe they poked around and Philly and made a phone call or two
about Jalen Carter.
We don't know yet so that maybe they have something to do with the wait for it.
But right now, you don't have to wait.
The Jaguars have resigned to their own free agents.
Montag Brown getting a three-year deal for $33 million at $11 million per.
I just saw where he met with the media while I was recording.
So I had to go back and listen to it.
After the fact, just super, super humble and happy to be here,
he's a real real big-time skin fit.
And the Jaguars got him for $11 million.
It's very similar to the contract that the Raiders
used to resign Eric Stokes, three years, $30 million.
So it looks like the Jaguars got a bit of a bargain
for a dude that is super, super scheme specific
to what they want to do playing zone and some off-man keeping things in front of him.
But then he's just a very, very high effort player.
And they're solidified.
And Brent Martino from Action Sports, I believe pointed this out,
that the Jaguars, it was either Brent or Olivia Tessley.
They pointed out that the Jaguars' entire secondary
because of the rookie deals of Jerry Jones and Travis Hunter
is about $30 million.
The Rams are paying Trent McDuffy $30 million just for him.
Now, he's an all-prove.
We get that.
They're in a little bit of a different situation than the Jaguars.
All right, and they move.
Believe it or not, the Rams do move a little bit differently, right?
Then the Jaguars.
Everybody thinks that they're so similar.
But there's a lot of risk involved in the Rams
appear to be ready to take that risk.
But they always seem to do it with proven and established players.
The Jaguars in this situation, this isn't a proven deal.
This is a good deal for Monterey Brown.
This isn't a hometown discount.
This is about what the value was on the market.
And I just think the Jaguar said, look, man, look.
He's ours.
It's a bird in the hand.
We know exactly what we have in Monterey.
So the Jaguars are keeping Monterey Brown.
And I forgive me if you're watching this as opposed to listening.
And then I keep varying off because I have my monitors,
my TV monitors on the wall, where I'm looking for any breaking news.
So in the next 26 minutes or so or whatever,
if the Jaguars do something, I'm going to announce it on the show.
And you won't see it here on my today's show outline here.
So I'm kind of doing this live because you're going to,
you're going to get it about 15 minutes after I'm done recording.
So it is very fluid right now.
Everything continues to go on.
A lot of teams are signing players.
The Jaguars had another signing and that was Dennis Gardek,
the linebacker slash edge russier.
Just the warrior, man, just a football player.
Play special teams, plays with an attitude.
He gets a one-year deal for $2.5 million to come back
and do what Dennis Gardek does, provide that energy.
It is really, really, really once again a bird in the head.
What I have noticed that they're going to do here is,
if there's a big time player, I mean a no-brainer talent,
upward talent, one of the Jaguars are going to make a phone call
as they should.
They're getting dynamic playmakers.
When you see the fact that or hear about them talking about
what it's going to take to get Max Cross.
And it's going to take a lot to get people like this.
It's going to take a lot if they were able to get Jaylen Carter.
They're going to give up some things.
And it doesn't mean that they didn't like the pieces that they traded away
or if they ever get to the point where they trade those pieces away.
To get something value, but you got to give up something value.
Go down here and buy a luxury car.
It's going to cost you a hundred grand.
Go get one of these big super SUVs and see,
go build a nice house in a neighborhood like I did.
You're going to pay premium price for it.
And one, you're lucky to have those assets.
But two, you're also lucky that this is a team man.
They're not resting.
If they can improve, and I'm going to talk about a marginal improvement.
And this is one thing that is similar to what you see the ramps going.
They're not paying people that they know are going to be absolutely productive.
They're not goofing around with this.
This isn't about projection.
This isn't about, you know, last year they did signed down me brown because of
a gut feeling.
But now in this year, when they're going out,
teams that are giving people money or the people that the Jaguar
are making phone calls about just to say, hey, what's going on?
Let me see what's happening.
What are you looking for?
If they can't get the deal done, it's because they're prudent.
But the other part of it is is other teams that are in worse
situations are probably willing to mortgage and sell the house
to get some of these talented players.
The Jaguars, they still want to be super, super measured.
But what this tells you is that they will never, ever rest.
They will never, ever rest.
They are always looking to improve, even if that means moving on from players
that are pretty, pretty solid in order to get better.
That leaves us to talk about the edge rush market because
they're still going to have to pass rush.
We'll see what happens with the interior with Jalen Carter or whoever.
But it does kind of start giving you answers to questions when you wonder
what are the Jaguars looking for when they have these meetings.
And when they sit there and talk amongst each other,
conversations that we aren't privy to and rightfully so,
their actions, their activity, and even the things that don't work.
But if you hear their name associated with certain people,
it'll flat out tell you exactly what they think needs to be improved.
And they've said that they need to improve the pass rush.
They did not necessarily say they need defensive ends.
And this is what I've been harping on since the end of the year.
Even all the way going back to last year when they were still winning games,
a whole bunch of games, I was on the interior pass rush aspect.
Now, you say, well, Max Crosby is an edge rusher.
Yeah, but Max Crosby is also one of the 10 best edge rushes I've ever seen.
It's close. I know people get on me when I say stuff like that.
1012, he's up there.
But he is one of the five best I've seen in the last 15 years.
So, for the sake of this conversation, understand,
when somebody's out there like that, you make a phone call.
Period point blank in the discussion and the Jaguars are doing that.
What I will tell you about the edge value with Jalen Phillips getting four years,
115, 120 million dollars.
Trayvon Walker is going to break the bank.
So, everybody that's sitting there saying they wouldn't resign Trayvon
and they use terms like prove, they'll prove.
What do you think he has to prove to the Jaguars?
Absolutely nothing if you listen to the coaches and the way that they talk about him.
How valuable is he?
If Trayvon Walker was a free agent right now,
his deal would be four years, 135, 140 million dollars, I'm telling you.
And you can think that's a mistake.
Some of y'all probably wouldn't think,
Buster Brown had 11 million dollars a year as a mistake.
But it is what it is.
The Jaguars know y'all better catch up.
We're going to talk about the edge value and what this means for people like Trayvon Walker
here in Jacksonville in just a second, unlocked on Jaguars.

man, all you got to do is just hang out with me each and every day like y'all.
Oh, and that's why we're the number one sports podcast network.
And you guys make that possible.
So now I give you some more information here.
The Edge Value League Y is going absolutely crazy.
Hey, maybe the Jaguars too,
or maybe Trayvon's representation.
I don't even know if they're discussing the deal.
I'm kind of plugged into it in multiple ways,
but I still don't put people in position to
mess up any kind of discussions by telling me,
I never overplay any kind of relationship that I have with folks that
allows to put them in a position that would jeopardize anything.
So shout out to folks that I know in the business
from the agent side as well as some personal side.
For keeping everything the way it's supposed to be kept.
But so this is me talking.
And the reason why I prefaced all of that to say this is
because I don't want anyone to confuse
what I'm feeling to inside information.
This is not that.
This is just Tony Wiggins,
two-way, whatever you want, call me.
This is just me talking, okay?
The Jail and Carter situation is much
like what you just saw with Michael Pittman.
When one guy signs, people look at the allocation of funds and go,
oh, you mean the Eagles like, for instance, with the coats,
Alec Pierce got paid.
He got a four-year, $115 million deal, right?
So Michael Pittman must be free.
They and people kind of had an idea that Pittman wasn't going to be on the team
because of his numbers anyway.
The number that he had and then the coats,
they have sauce gardener and they got to redo Daniel Jones and all of this.
But still, there's, once you realize that there's a commitment and a position,
this is what I tell folks.
Teams are just not going to allocate a whole bunch of money to one room.
Philly's done it and got away with it because their primary area,
primarily a two-wide receive team because they throw the ball to the tight ends
and the backs a lot.
That's why you very rarely hear who the third receiver is.
In Philadelphia, you surely don't get to the fourth receiver.
Cincinnati, you don't really hear,
there's another team that did that where they put all of that into two players.
Dallas is about to do the same thing at the wide receiver position.
Very rarely, though, do you see a whole bunch of money go into one room,
especially with interior defense alignment?
And that brings us to Jalen Carter.
Jalen Carter's number is what it is because there's probably even been a little bit
of trepidation from the Eagles and they don't have to do it right now.
Jalen Carter is a year behind Trevon Walker.
So Trevon Walker is playing this year on his rookie deal.
I mean, the fifth year option.
Jalen Carter is playing on his fourth year.
So this will be like last year, the Jaguar,
the Jaguar is resigning Trevon Walker,
which hasn't even happened this year yet, right?
So part of this is also people looking at Philly going,
hey, man, y'all just gave Jordan Davis all of that money to the nose tackle.
You gave 20 million.
He's going to cost you 30 million for him.
You guys looking to do something early,
you ask because if they're willing to do something early,
you as the team will eventually get Jalen Carter on his rookie deal
and then a fifth year option.
And then you can work out something.
And that extension wouldn't kick in until 2028.
I believe, let's say 26, 25 this year, 26.
No, the kick-in in 2027.
So you can kind of kick the can down a road a little bit,
put some money in this pocket.
But there may be another reason,
a reason that, like I'm going to compare this to our players.
Trevon Walker, when I tell you he don't have anything
to prove to the Jaguar,
he had a freak injury last year.
Proud of that, he had 10 sacks in two straight years.
One of those years, he was being substituted in and out of the game
by Ryan Nielsen and y'all know that.
So last year, he gets banged up.
The team is obviously different when he's not there.
We don't a bit of a losing streak when he wasn't playing
or at least when he came back to play with that club.
But his character is never something that you question.
His want to, you hear them talk about who he is in the building.
And I know people say who he is in the building,
doesn't create sacks.
But who he is in the building does allow you to make the assessment
that he's somebody you can count and depend on.
And that's why when I hear stuff like
prove it, Dale, or hometown discount,
it's actually laughable to me.
And it's laughable because you see the money
that these teams are throwing around on the first day of free agency.
I mean, you got average pass rushers
getting 13, 14 million dollars a year.
I want you to hear Lou DiBiasi from Lockdown Eagles.
As he talks about Jalen Carter,
the Jaguars have been linked to at least,
they've been linked to some phone calls.
Here's Lou DiBiasi from Lockdown Eagles.
The other news from this weekend
that surfacing about the Eagles defensive tackle position
is that the Eagles are receiving calls on Jalen Carter.
If they are considering, they already paid Jordan Davis.
If they are considering now not paying Jalen Carter,
I think that is just a massive, massive mistake.
Even if, and there's a couple of reasons
teams might be calling.
Number one, teams maybe saw the Jordan Davis contract
and wonder if Jalen is also going to get that deal.
Are two players at the same position
going to get north of $25 to $30 million annually
with the same team?
It's probably worth a shot if you're a team
that needs an interior pass rusher.
It's probably worth a shot to call
about a 25 year old elite player at that spot
when you see a player at the same position
get over $20 million a year.
But maybe they are calling
because the Eagles are extremely hesitant
to give Jalen Carter what it's going to cost
to lock him up long term,
which I think is going to be north of $30 million a year.
Yeah, so there's Lou and I basically,
I'm not going to say he echoed me.
I had already seen that clip
because I used it on Lockdown NFL.
But those are exactly my sentiments
that maybe they want to see a little bit more maturity.
There was questions about him.
He was probably the best player in the draft
or maybe one or the two or three best players
the year he came out.
And he fell the ninth or tenth
because of some issues
where he had to leave the combine.
Folks saying he got tired or to work out.
And he pretty much been a model citizen
and he was one of those dudes
that everybody pointed to saying,
look, this is what you get
for overthinking everything during the draft.
And then he has an incident on national TV
against Cowboys where he spit on Die Prescott
with suspended before the game.
And it brought into question again,
the maturity aspect,
because dude, how can you do that
at the beginning of a game
that this team actually needs to win?
So I'm not telling you that that's the biggest point
but when it comes to teams
trying to give guys money early,
those are the kind of things that creep in.
Now that makes you appreciate
Trayvon Walker.
He'll never do anything like that.
So he slung down Davis Mills one time
because he was upset
because they were holding him
and he kept getting to him.
And whistle blew and it is what it is
from a couple of years ago.
And I'm not saying poo poo that.
But one thing that his character
on and off the field
and who he is is never a question.
So if a team has any trepidation
about should we pay this guy
or should we not pay this guy?
The person that he is constantly
and the dude that you hear the coaches
rave about, rave about
is the kind of guy you give a bunch of money to.
And he's a better player than Jalen Phillips
who just got four years
at $120 million.
So do with that what you will
when you start sitting there thinking about him playing
for anything less than what he deserves.
All right, I want you to wait for it.
Wait for what?
Something, something big.
The Jaguar isn't,
they're going to do something that you do not expect
because we've heard them link to people all weekend
that I was like, are you serious?
They're big game hunt, man.
We'll talk about that in just a second
if you don't locked on Jaguar.
And today's show is sponsor
and brought to you by game time.
That's right, game time, man.
You want some tickets?
That's the place you need to be going
because we live in a world where
you can stream anything order food in minutes
and carry super computers in your pocket.
And somehow buying tickets to a game,
a live game still feels very, very complicated
because hidden fees, jumping prices, endless steps,
it has to be a better way.
And that's why I use the game time app
because it gives fans the advantage
and makes getting tickets simple
whether it's an NFL game concert, comedy, whatever you're into.
I jumped on the app to check out tickets
for an upcoming game and it honestly took me minutes.
That's all.
You can see panorama views from every sea,
the price you get and this is a big one.
The price you get includes all fees
and there will be no surprises at checkout.

This show is brought to you by Pepsi.
Do you ever wonder if you're choosing the soda
that you actually prefer?
That's the question at the heart of the Pepsi paradox
when labels and bias disappear.
People prefer the taste of Pepsi Zero Sugar.
In the 2025 Pepsi Challenge,
66% of people in blind taste tests
prefer the taste of Pepsi Zero Sugar
over Coca-Cola Zero Sugar.
It's time to let your taste decide.
Go out and try Pepsi Zero Sugar today.
You deserve taste, you deserve Pepsi.
All right, we rolling along, moving along
on the first day of the free agency tempering period
that is legal, wink, wink.
And the Jaguars have not done much yet
with the exception of retaining Monterey Brown,
which is a big deal and Dennis Kardec,
which is also trying to deal the nice move
that you'd like to see them make.
They're just not gonna go out here
and just swap players, just to swap players
when they already have a burden of hand
and they know exactly who they are.
So after these first two moves,
what is it that the Jaguars need?
They don't need to prioritize cornerback
because they're good.
They have four corners, including,
I think Johnny Jones is now the swing guy,
he'll play right left or nickel
if there's an injury.
They did bring back Christian Braswell.
So maybe Braswell backs up Monterey Brown
and then Johnny focuses on either nickel
or backing up Travis Hunter at left corner, right?
Now you have to turn and focus on maybe the safety position
along with where they're gonna get pass rush from.
On offense, probably another wide receiver,
probably not a big name, someone who's a specialist.
But I just get this feeling that there's something
and I brought this point up a couple of weeks ago
that if the 49ers can't work something
out with Trent Richardson and it appears
that they are now open to trading Trent Richardson, right?
Trent Richardson has a big number.
It's $39 million for,
I think it's $32.33 million in salary.
So at order 14 to make that trade,
and I'm not saying that that's what the Jaguars are gonna do,
but since it's something that we talked about
and discussed here on Lockdown, Jaguars,
I'll bring it back up.
How can they make that happen?
They cannot make that happen, I believe,
unless they cut a couple of players
and and restructured trade on Walker
because in order to facilitate that trade,
even if you're going to restructure
the contract of Trent Williams,
at the time the trade is made,
you will have to be able to absorb that salary cap
into your team, into your structure
before the trade can be facilitated.
So it will require a whole bunch
and all the accountants out there,
all the Twitter accounts out there,
they own spot track already, they tap and man,
they're trying to figure out how, how, how, how, how.
They're gonna do something.
It may not be that big,
but it's going to be something.
And I know the concentration on this is,
okay, what do you have to give up?
At this point for taking that money off
the books with the 49ers, a day three pick,
I'm dead serious.
At best, a fourth round pick.
And I really don't know if that is a day three pick,
but it's an early day three pick,
as news continues to break.
So if something pops up about Jaguars,
I'll make sure that I let you know exactly what it is,
but there's something they got cooking.
Also, Kenneth Walker has gone to the chiefs,
the Texans, another team that needed a running back,
traded for David Montgomery,
could the Jaguars actually be in play
to bring back Travis ET in?
They could, but Seattle now needs a running back.
There you go.
So by the way, Michael Pittman,
he agreed to terms on a three year 59 million dollar contract
with the Steelers.
So just like he got traded, and it's a day three pick,
you see the money he got,
and this is exactly what I'm talking about.
You don't have to give teams a whole bunch
when you're taking guys off of their books,
and the significance of that is this.
If they cut guys that have a lot of money in salary cap,
that's due to them that's guaranteed,
they have to make it a June 1st designation.
They will still have to take that money
and spread it out over either the life
of the initial contract if it had four years on it,
or the June 1st designation allows them
to stretch it out over whatever was left
on the initial contract years wise.
Or if they want to go ahead and clear room
and take the total hit like the Falcon did
with like 45 million dollars from Matt Ryan a few years ago,
they can do that.
Miami doffins, they eat in a whole bunch of tours money,
like 60 million dollars.
But when you trade a player,
if you have a player that say he's due
15 million dollars in salary,
and that's why you're getting rid of it,
if you trade him, the team that you trade him to
each that salary, and it comes off your books as clean.
Now, the bonus money that you have already given that player,
and if there's an amortization of that money,
that stays with you because you already gave it to him.
You can't charge salary cap space to a team
that didn't actually give the player the money.
Only the salary, only the guaranteed portion
that is remaining of the contract goes to the new team,
which goes back to me talking about Trent Williams,
in order for the Jaguars to do that,
or to get anybody, even if they're not giving up
very much compensation, they have to have the salary cap room
at the time that the trade is consummated.
That is the way it works.
So we'll see what happens,
but if you see or get wind of the Jaguar
starting to restructure people,
or you see them start to maybe add board years
and, or even getting rid of somebody,
you can prepare yourself for them to do something
really, really big.
Don't know what that is yet,
but I'll be here all day.
I'm sitting in office and I'm not moving.
I am here blue to the TV constantly checking sources.
I'm constantly texting people to see
if there's any kind of movement going on.
Wind and if, not even if,
but when the Jaguars decide to make a move,
you'll have it right here unlocked on Jaguar,
as you always do.
I'll do a squad show later on with Marquis Arden,
as well as the host.
My homie, Mia O'Brien will be with you.
And by then, maybe the Jaguars have done something
if they haven't, we will continue to discuss
who is still available and what they can do to boost their team.
Love the effort, love the fact that they're making calls
on great players.
It's just the same mentality they had last year
when they traded up to get Travis Hunter.
They are big game hunting, trying to get as many great players
on this team.
Players, man, the Jaguars ain't sitting there
playing that development role.
That's a part of it,
but some teams try to depend on that
because they're afraid to go out and be bold.
The Jaguars are doing both.
We'll develop people, Ontario Brown,
Barbara Washington, we'll develop people,
but at the same time, if we see a chance
to go out and snatch something that is a for show,
or for show, you know what a for show is.
They are going to do it.
