North Texas is a part of big noon kickoff. How about that? I love that. North Texas played a lot of really good top five teams over the years. But I don't think they've ever been featured a part of a big noon kickoff or a prime time kickoff on Saturday. But they do open against the defending champion Indiana Hoosiers on Saturday. We've got games on Sunday, SMU plays on Monday. This is going to be a fun weekend. And it should be yet another crazy. And I'm sure we'll have all sorts of surprises this year in college football.

1:02Yeah, it's one of my favorite times of the year. I love the start of the college football season. I don't know which sport I love the most. It's either the NBA or college football, though. It's one of those two. Growing up in Oklahoma, you have to love college football. It's the only sport in town. Sure. Nobody really cares about anything else. There are no pro sports or at least there weren't when I was growing up there. So it was all college football all the time. And the thing I'm probably looking the most forward to this season here in a couple weeks, I'm making that trip to Ann Arbor to the big house to see OU and Michigan. I've never been there. It's always been a bucket list destination for me. This will be the only time Oklahoma ever plays in Ann Arbor. Unless we get some weird matchup in the playoff. But regular season, I doubt they will ever go back there in my lifetime. It's their first time up there. They've only played Michigan a couple of times ever.

2:02That's great. I'm so glad you're doing that. Can't wait. And it was about 10 or 15 years ago where I used to not really make road trips. I'd go up to Norman and I'd go to the OU Texas game every year here. But I just decided they're going to so many great places. I need to start checking some of these off the list. And so I've made it to South Bend and I've made it to Columbus and I made it to Knoxville. And I made it to the Ole Miss game to the Grove a couple of years ago. And so now I can't wait to go to Ann Arbor. Yeah, that's awesome. Number of those places are still on my list. I hope to get to them someday. I don't know if it's the best place. But man, just the tradition there and the size of it. And from what I understand with the tailgating scene. And everyone has an awesome tailgate scene now. But Michigan's been doing this for a long, long time. I'm also looking forward to that Saturday and October the OU Texas game. That day is just the best. It's so much fun.

3:03And I mentioned this every year. But maybe the thing that I look the most forward to year in and year out is that late Saturday night, family's gone to bed. But I'm going to stay up a little late and watch some random West Coast or Rocky Mountain game that's in hopefully a cold environment at a cool stadium with a great atmosphere. It can be two teams. Usually as two teams, I don't care anything about. But I love watching. It feels like bonus football. After all day long, watching all the big teams play to eavesdrop on Montana versus Montana state. And it's it's snowing in Bozeman. I love that. Well, and it seems like Hawaii always gives you something. You can get you know, the Hawaii this Saturday. UCLA Cal on Saturday night at 9.30 kick. Yeah, that'll be going late. Yeah, anything from Pacific Coast I'm in.

4:03So we haven't talked much about the upcoming college football season yet. So I thought we'd break it into two segments this morning. We'll look at local and regional teams here. And then the 815 segment. We'll talk about the national scene. The Lane Kiffin latest controversy. The Highest Men Race things like that. Can I pre-say something? Yes, about college football. Because I think I pinpointed what I mentioned on this past Monday when we came back watching college football last weekend. I just felt different about it. I just felt differently about I don't know my excitement level. I still have some sort of weird feeling going into this weekend. And I'll be watching. I can't wait to see some of this stuff. But I think I pinpointed it. Number one. Last year going through that with North Texas being on the verge of going to the college football playoff. And then not having just a few players. But the entire team and the coaching staff moving to Oklahoma state.

5:05That is that's hurt my college football heart. I understand all the reasons. But as I throw out that number again over 210 new players there in the last three years. I don't like what it's done to the smaller division one school. It's understandable. And the other thing is we've spent so much time. And we've done this the last few years of Mank. Can you believe what's happened to college football? How about the transfer portal or whatever it's been? The soresby discussion, the injunction discussion that we've had. And we'll still have going to today to the big decision that affects LSU and a number of other teams. That is just it's on the tipping point to me of. I don't I can't really identify what the feeling is. It's just. It's it makes me nervous, you know? Yes. Okay, so we're about to kick in Baton Rouge and we still don't know who's eligible.

6:06And why can't you just go by the rules of your conference? If you don't respect the NCAA and your conference comes out and says, no, we're not doing that. Why can't that be the rule? Why do we have to go to an injunction? I always hated that in high school football when some team would be ruled an eligible. But no, no, they got an injunction. So they're playing them aren't I just hate all that? That's totally understandable. And I'm with you because of our job, we have to talk about all that courtroom stuff, but I don't like it. It's the worst. And I don't think any college football fan likes it. I mentioned last hour I'm reading the new Peter King book about his 40 years covering sports. And he starts by talking to Pete Rose, or you know, telling a story about talking to Pete Roselle. And Pete Roselle at the end of his 10 years, the commissioner of the National Football League had had enough. And he said that he was ready to retire because the sport had become too litigious. And Peter King brought up a comment that he had read

7:13by Kennis Hall Mountain Landis, the old baseball commissioner back in the 1920s. I think it was. Landis said the most important thing for a sport is to stay out of the courts. And Peter brought that up. Peter brought that up to Roselle and Roselle said, totally agree. And when I read that, I thought of today's college football. And I don't think any fans like anything that goes on in any sport in the courtroom. It takes away from your enjoyment of the sport. And so I think you're right. I think college football is really walking that fine line of having become such a beat down when it comes to all of these cases, whether it's players coming back from the NFL or Sores beer, whatever it is, nobody likes that. No. And but even having pre-set that eight o'clock Saturday morning, I'll be tuned in going, okay, how many people are outside the stadium in Baton Rouge? You know, what are they? Yep. What's Sabin have to say and what's going on on this opening Saturday?

8:17Well, that's the thing is that this new version of college football, NIL, the portal, players coming back, whatever it is, TV ratings have never been higher. Offseason chatter. It's now year round. That's what that's what has made the NFL the monster on this planet in pro sports year round discussion. College football is now a year round thing. Yeah. So people still love the games. They're not not watching because of all this stuff. Now, maybe it does get to a point where they do stop watching, but so far, the new college football that we all claim to hate, we are all watching more, talking about it more and embracing it more. Yes, we know. Man, the tune in factor this Saturday and in a couple of weeks when he goes back to Ole Miss, Lane Kiffin is like, you couldn't script a better villain for college football. No. All right, we'll get to Lane here in the next segment.

9:18We're going to have to run through the local teams here pretty quickly, though. Okay. In this segment, we'll stay local and regional and stay in our state. And you mentioned the local teams, the three big local teams, TCU, SMU, and North Texas. Of course, TCU started last week. They stubbed their toe against North Carolina. It's just been a really rough two weeks for TCU, three weeks for TCU. They're off this week. They'll get back at it next week. I feel like they just need to reboot. Yes. They've had the situation with the Star Telegram, the altercation between players that led to a hospitalization. The game against North Carolina, it's been awful. I feel like if they just reboot, figure some stuff out, get back to playing football. I still think they're probably a good team. I don't know if there's good as last year. I think they're probably good. They've just had the most wheels off start to a season that maybe that they've ever had.

10:18Terrible start. And it's never a good sign if you have to reboot after week one. Right. But you're right. I think they do. They just need to get away from the headlines of the last couple of weeks and going into the season. I think a lot of people looked at them as, yeah, they'll be contenders in the big 12. And I still think they could be. Don't maybe North Carolina is better than we all thought, especially on the defensive side. Maybe that's not as bad a loss as we think it is. SMU, we talked to Retlashley. Their head coach a couple of days ago here on the ticket. They've got a big one to open on Monday night to complete the last game of the weekend, Labor Day evening against Florida State. They've got in Jennings one of the best quarterbacks in the country. So that's a great place for SMU to start their 19th in the preseason polls. As we talked about them a couple of days ago, they've got these big games though. Their schedule appears to be tougher. They've got Notre Dame on the schedule. They've they've got this Florida State opener.

11:19Florida State should be better. If they can navigate these big games and get a couple of big wins, then they very well could be a playoff team again. Or they could and yeah, I think they're a contender and I think there is a chance, a chance if SMU is as good as we think they are, especially on the offensive side of the ball, you could have four teams from the state of Texas in the playoff. Yes, you could. And SMU I think has a chance. We were staring at that possibility last year. And North Texas are Alma Mothers. You mentioned lost everybody from what was the best season in school history last year. That was fun. That was, I don't know, the most fun following North Texas football ever. A couple of those 1.00 AA teams when we were in school there that went to the playoff. That was fun. But last year was legitimately fun. It was Division 1 and they were in the hunt for a playoff spot. That's unthinkable. They would have been a playoff team and they pulled it off in Tulane.

12:22That was a disastrous game. And I can't wait to see what Drew Mestemaker and Caleb Hawkins and why it young do at Oklahoma state. The only guy I've heard, this is the most disconnected I've ever been from a North Texas team. I think Neil Brown is a really good coach. I'll take what he did at Troy if he can do that in North Texas. By the way, one-ing record at West Virginia. And I think that's pretty good if you have a one-ing record at West Virginia. I think he's a really good coach. And I'm told these transfers that they got are pretty good. The only one I've heard of is the guy is going to start at quarterback, Taven Jackson. And he actually spent some time in Indiana. And that's who they play on Saturday. And it's a tough opener. The defending champs, the Hoosiers, will host North Texas. Indiana is a 40 point favorite. So I'll take 40 points. Let's go. Come on. Let's go. Vegas is not expecting a close game there. No. I'm also interested in seeing Mestemaker and Eric Morrison, how it works in Stillwater.

13:26Mestemaker is an outstanding quarterback. But I do wonder if it's going to translate to a power for conference because his two biggest games last year, he threw five picks combined. So I need to see it. I mean, I like him a lot. Everybody likes him a lot. But is he a rubber stamp, best quarterback in the big 12? I need to see him against this better competition before I'm sure of it. Yeah, I was at that South Florida game last year. And he did not look good in the Tullain game. He didn't play great there. Right. But yeah, his skill level is really high. And it's an unbelievable story. And that is the big question. Will it translate to a higher level? It's football season on polymarket trade.
