Started yesterday for the Rangers in Philadelphia with a five three loss.
And some of what we saw yesterday looked a lot like last year.
They were shut out until the ninth inning.
The bats really struggled again until they made it interesting in the ninth at least,
but they end up losing the opener to the fills five three.
But opening day is always awesome.
It just is.
It's better if it's here.
Get your kids out of school and go to the ballpark, make a day of it, and sell out crowd yesterday at Citizens Bank Park.
We talked earlier in the show that that looks like a great place to watch a baseball game.
It looks looks like a place that you're a baseball fan.
You need to go.
I wondered how it is for visiting fans.
I wouldn't think Ranger fans would take too much grief there, but it looked like an awesome place.
A nice day.
And you never know what you're going to get in Philadelphia in March.
It could have been a miserable day, but it was really nice.
And you know, Phillies known for a lot of things.
It's definitely a rival city of Dallas mainly because of the Cowboys will solely because of the Cowboys and Eagles.
But they have a tradition of some pretty awesome announcers and Philly, including the guy that I was unfamiliar with and tell yesterday did just a little bit of research on him.
And it's Don Baker, their PA guy.
As you heard him running down the lineups yesterday for the Phillies and the Rangers.
He has a really interesting delivery style.
It's very old timey.
And he is the longest tenured PA announcer in Major League Baseball.
He's been doing this since 1972.
I heard Dave Raymond say that like that this was his whatever 54th year.
That would be yeah.
And I couldn't believe that 54 years.
Yeah.
And we've had Chuck Morgan for a long time.
We all think Chuck's the greatest and he is.
But here's a little bit of an example of Don Baker from yesterday.
Shortstop number seven trade turner.
That in second Phillies designated hitter.
Number 12 Kyle Schwarber.
That in third.
First placement.
Number three, Bryce Harper.
That's pretty awesome.
And he's been through some things.
He's a cancer survivor.
It's really cool that he's still doing it.
Yeah.
From what Dave said yesterday.
He has been loved.
And Philadelphia.
They also have a number of other announcers.
That is where NFL films was started in Philadelphia.
And one of the voices of NFL films was Harry Callis.
And I thought about this yesterday.
Well, we got to explain who Harry Callis is.
He was the long time voice of the Phillies from 1971 until he passed away in 2009.
Well, his son, Kane, who does some broadcasting and is a recording artist,
saying the national anthem yesterday on what would have been Harry Callis's 90th birthday.
First, this is what Harry Callis sounded like.
And I didn't realize until I guess later when I became an adult or maybe when I was a teenager
or something, I realized, okay, that's the voice of the Phillies.
I knew him from NFL films.
And he used to do the NFL game of the week and the recap of it for NFL films.
And it sounded something like this.
Plus three November afternoon in Chicago, time to bundle up and march down to soldier field
to see if the Chicago Bears once again can hold off impending disaster.
So not John Fassinda, but that's Harry Callis.
And that's our fans know how to let that voice was just awesome.
I just loved Harry Callis's voice.
So he is no longer with us, but his son, Kane, did the national anthem.
And I thought he was incredible.
And I guess he is a professional singer.
Oh, say can you see by the dawn's early light?
Thank you.
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and the bright stars through the past?
I guess my only criticism would be maybe just a little too slow tempo.
It takes a while, but still a great voice.
And I don't know.
There's something about that.
The national anthem on opening day just has a little bit of extra to it.
And I thought the Phillies did a really good job with that yesterday.
So as we mentioned earlier in the show, it's opening day.
You're fired up.
Maybe what's the new team going to look like?
It's a little bit of a bummer when you're on the road.
And the Rangers are going to play their first six on the road.
It's also a bummer when you get beat.
And for the first eight innings or so, this game looked a lot like last year.
Where are the Ranger bats?
I would say specifically for yesterday.
Christopher Sanchez is one of the best pitchers in Major League Baseball.
He was an awesome yesterday.
Struck out 10.
He didn't walk anybody.
And that's pretty incredible.
We'll see what happens here in the regular season.
The Rangers drew more walks in spring training than any other team.
You can say, well, it's just spring training, but that's one of the things they've.
Really been preaching with this new approach with Skip Schumacher and his staff.
More patience.
Even if you don't draw a walk, at least making work.
And basic pointed out yesterday that yeah, the Rangers were.
They were not putting up much resistance.
But they were at least getting to the fifth or six pitch of an at bat.
And that was kind of the goal yesterday against Sanchez.
And therefore, he wouldn't be able to go more than six innings.
But man, he's great.
We'll see, we'll talk here about the offense in a second.
But on opening day, that's, that's a tough pitcher to see.
It is.
And that is a legitimate excuse for why the bats were quiet for eight innings.
Because Sanchez is arguably a top three top five pitcher in the game.
But remember last year, native Aldi was kind of unhittable until he got hurt.
And he was in the running for the Saiyung.
Sanchez finished second in the NL Saiyung voting.
So the Rangers also put a pitcher out there who is considered to be one of the best in the game.
And Philly hit him.
That's where we're home run in the first inning was such a cheapy.
That was not, it wasn't a big blast out the left field.
That man, that is a short porch out there.
But he did give it up though.
And the bomb home run in the fifth was not a cheapy.
No, that was the three run homer.
That was a killer.
So I guess my point is, well, yeah, the Rangers went up against a really good pitcher.
But last year, they didn't hit really good pitchers and they didn't hit bad pitchers.
No, they didn't.
So I don't know that that's a legitimate excuse because the Philly's hit the Rangers good pitcher.
Yeah.
And for Evalde, it wasn't certainly his best.
In fact, it's the first time in his six opening starts that he hasn't made it out of the fifth.
Last year on opening day, he faced Boston.
And he struck out nine, walked zero, went six innings, allowed two runs.
So it was a little worse this year.
And this was collectively his worst.
And look, we say this every year, it's just one game.
But when you're off and struggles, at least they did this.
At least they put something together in the ninth inning.
And one of those guys that you hope has a bounce back year this year is Jake Berger.
And he had a two run homer in the ninth.
That was made it think, okay, yeah, that was the best thing to see about yesterday.
He went three for four, had that home run.
And yeah, if he's going to hit clean up, then they're going to need that guy to be way better than he was last year.
And so far so good.
And he had three hits yesterday.
He actually got a couple of hits off of Sanchez, which was encouraging.
I thought Seager getting two hits was also encouraging.
Yeah.
That's another guy if he's going to be in the three hole for most of this season.
Then they not only need him to be healthy, but need him to hit.
So those two guys, they're three and four hitters look good.
And I know Andrew McCutchens, like 60 years old, 39.
But I think he will help them this year.
And obviously he had a good enough spring.
They thought, yeah, let's, let's put him on the roster.
He had a hit yesterday.
Heck, almost a home run got to the wall.
And I think he will help them this year.
I don't know what he's going to mean to them in terms of, you know, hits, RBI's.
He will help the clubhouse.
I would say that would be maybe the main reason Skip Schumacher kept him is because I think he's going to be a great clubhouse presence.
But he had a chance immediately to help them yesterday this season.
In that first inning, he came to the plate with two men on and two outs and he struck out.
Yeah.
So he had a chance right there in the first inning to help them.
And he didn't.
So I'm not sure at this point of his career, how much help he's going to give them at the plate.
Probably not going to see him much in the field.
But I think he's here more for his presence and experience than for what he'll be able to deliver.
And he got to start yesterday.
I don't know how many starts he's going to have.
But at least it gives you an option if you have some injuries.
Yeah.
And the guys who we really need to see something from this year.
White Langford who was over Evan Carter who came off the bench yesterday.
He will start against right handers and center field.
He went over.
So did Josh Smith who I think is going to I think he's going to be terrific at second base.
He was I think they're best offensive player last year.
I think you'll make a decent transition to second.
Josh Young was over.
And that's another guy.
That's a real key.
Again, you're seeing an ace.
It's it's a difficult guy to to go up against on opening day.
As we made the point at six o'clock is Evan Grant wrote.
That's going to be the story of the first.
It's a three or four weeks for sure in first 40 games.
You are playing basically winning teams from last year.
This could be a slow start for this team.
It's also very weird to see a Dolly's yesterday in a Phillies uniform.
Yeah.
One of the heroes of the World Series run.
And I'll say this at the very least they kept fighting.
And they made it interesting in the ninth.
When backus came in for Philadelphia out of the bullpen.
He's such a weird pitcher.
And his first pitch was I swear five feet wide of the plate.
And that delivery is so it's so weird and he did not look dialed in.
And because he couldn't locate the ball.
Then he just started really trying to throw, you know, simple meat pitches
and the Rangers were taken advantage of it.
And they made it interesting at least they kept fighting.
Yeah.
And yeah, you wondered oh, this could be a heck of a comeback.
That's something this team didn't do last year.
When they got down.
They did not have many comebacks last year.
And they didn't have one yesterday.
But at least they got something across the plate.
And yeah, seeing burger get off to a good start.
That's at least one good sign in what was outside of that.
A pretty miserable opening day.
