The Richard Sherman Podcast - Patriots-Seahawks REACTION: Seattle survives Darnold injury, DEFENSE dominates Drake Maye

About this episode

The Seattle Seahawks opened the season with a statement win over the New England Patriots — even after Sam Darnold exited on the first drive. Richard Sherman breaks down Seattle’s resilient 13–10 victory, the defense’s three-takeaway performance, Drew Lock stepping in at quarterback, and Jackson Smith-Njigba taking over when the offense needed a spark. He also explains why Mike Macdonald’s defense gave Drake Maye so many problems, highlights huge plays from Julian Love and Josh Jobe, and reacts to the controversial calls that shaped the game. Plus: the latest on Darnold’s hip injury, what the win says about Seattle’s Super Bowl expectations, and why Patriots fans should not overreact to one difficult matchup for Drake Maye.

Welcome back to the Richard Sherman Podcast and what a night for the Seattle Seahawks concerning early on. You lose, Sam Donnell, the first drive of the game. I know, I know everybody was like, oh my god, the seasons lost already. But this incredible Mike McDonald coach defense in Seattle Seahawks team is resilient. It's resilient because champions never die on the same day. They raised the banner and I raised the flag in Seattle and Lumen Field.

The boys are back in town and they're showing out. Every DB almost every DB on the field got a book today. Drake May looked really solid at times. I'm not going to say you look great. I'm not going to say you look great because the last interception to Josh Job was, I mean, it's going to be indefensible. And as we watch the tape, Josh Job was right where he's supposed to be spectacular, catch by him, give him all the credit in the world. But a bad decision by Drake May and to start the season off with three interceptions. I mean, just like to say, he looked very similar, eerily similar to the Super Bowl where he just struggled mightily. And you thought, hey, without Kobe Bryant, without Tire Cotta, who was out with the hamstring, Rodney Thomas came in. They brought him up off the practice squad. A guy who showed flashes during training camp tackled well in open space. That's one thing that we love to watch from this Mike McDonald coach defense is how they tackle in space. And they did that. They did that consistently.

And they just kept chopping wood. I mean, there were times they, that they were putting very tough situations and they kept chopping wood. The first touchdown was that PI legitimate. I thought Josh Job looked back on that play. I thought Josh Job got his head around, you know, an under thrown ball is the, is the bane of my existence. I really hate them a PI call on an under thrown ball when the receivers just jumping, just trying to show effort like he's going for the ball. The DB doesn't know where the ball is. He's just running to recover. Josh Job did a phenomenal job getting his head around. I thought looking as the ball got there, his head got around. I mean, that's not a call. I thought that might have been a call. The lead could have got involved and kind of waved that one off. But it leads to New England's first and only touchdown of the game. So I think you got to give Mike McDonald's defense a ton of credit credit. They played great all game long. I mean, even with those plays, they made it hard for them to get an in zone. They gave a field goal at the end and when they needed to step up when they needed to make plays in the end, they made huge plays in the second half.

Julian loves interception was an incredible play. I can't wait to watch that on film and break that one down. That was an incredible play. The tip drill between Thomas and Pritchett was an incredible play. I thought this this game was a defensive game. Then you obviously get the pressures from the defensive line. They did a phenomenal job. The big cat got him one dairy call. The guy who got a payday this off season. He got him one. They were getting there all day and I thought they put a lot of pressure on Drake. Drake may have a good athlete and got away with his legs and made some critical fourth down plays that I'm sure might make down with we'll use as coachable moments for this team, but offensively give Drew Lockham a lot of credit. He came into a very tough circumstance against a defense who's played really well. Who was getting around Milton Williams look like a force out there again, Christian Gonzalez is one of the best corners in the national football league. He was going to factor in, but Jackson Smith and Jigba, the reigning offensive player of the year showed you why he's the reigning offensive player of the year. And probably should be player of the week this week unless somebody else has a crazy game.

He didn't have any like big over the top catches. He took little gains and tournament to big gains. He took a hitch on what I want to say might have been a fourth down and took it 45 yards just out ran the defense. Looked incredible. That's how you take over a game. He didn't care who's at quarterback. Anybody longs you get him to ball in space. And that's what they did got him to ball in space. Drew Lock did a good job of just managing the game. Don't do too much. Don't lose the game. He had some throws there that were great throws, accurate throws. Cooper Cup had a big catch 24 yard game game, late in that game that helped move the ball down the field. But give Drew Lock a lot of credit in a tough situation where you have to come in in a charged up environment with his team down 10 points. He let them and he let them to a touchdown drive. What should have been the first field goal drive look like a touchdown drive some of the some of the calls from these refs. I'm going to call from these ref. My God. I know it's early is the first first game of the season, but oh, that was tough to watch.

Some of these calls were tough to watch, but it gave the Seahawks that adversity gave them something overcoming. I called it being a three point game. Now I didn't did I think it would be 13 to 10 three point game. No, I didn't. And I'm sure even those 10 points might make down was going to find something to coach. They they didn't have to give up 10. It really that PI call was questionable. That's debatable. I quote the corner gets his head around as the ball gets there on a super under thrown ball. Like come on. At some point you got to, you know, give them some some credit. You got to find a way to call that differently. And again, on a fourth down, push push, AJ Barnyard looked like he got it. They call a false start that nobody can see in a stadium again. I don't want to be that guy, but it looked strange. But football is back folks and you need to change the way you invest in the NFL this season. It's time to finally ditch your old sports book apps because Polly Market is here. Polly Market is a legal prediction market now available in all 50 states.

And those old sports books, they're a relic of the past. I'm Polly Market. You can trade on all things NFL from the Sunday slate to who wins rookie of the year to who performs the halftime show. We hear from listeners all the time about the sports books driving them crazy, trying to cash out live. They can block you as often as they want holding your money hostage. Polly Market gives you the freedom to cash out instantly. If the momentum swings, you sell off of it in real time. You are in control. No one can lock you out and you can also buy in anytime. So when the market dips, like if a team starts slow and drops to say 40%, that's not a loss. That's when you buy in. At Polly Market, you can buy cheap and ride the momentum back up. Polly Market is so confident that you won't go back to your old ways that they're issuing a challenge. They're giving you a $50 bonus when you deposit just $10. That's Polly Market.us and use promo code Sherman to get a $50 bonus when you deposit just $10. This defense looks like they they're picking up right where they left off. A lot of great plays to be made. I'm sure there's some things in the run game. They're run defense that they want to get cleaned up. It was a little leaky at times, but I mean, it was a hundred yards and it was a tough situation. They were put in very difficult situations and they kept standing up. Give them a ton of credit. Obviously nobody had the game they wanted to have, but it's the first game of the season. The defense gets three turnovers from from I mean, Julian love you could expect he played fantastic. He was great in a run game, great in the past game. It looks like he might have an all pro campaign starting off first game of the season, but they were chasing the blitzes. They were chasing a Jury May around. It seemed like they were trying to get him in flustered like he was in a Super Bowl. And at times he found he found the answers. That was clearly a point of focus this off season is to find answers to these blitzes that might make down with sins, but he couldn't find answers to all of me.

He couldn't find answers to the coverage adjustments that they made, especially the late rotations are, you know, the plays that ranges these safeties have. I think he tried to attack what he perceived was weakness. It wasn't so it wasn't so a great, great win for the Seattle Seahawks. And in a game you lose your starting quarterback in the first drive, Jadarian price. He only had 10 carries. They didn't run him into the ground, but in those 10 carries he he had 51 yards. That's a good game. That's a good game for the room. I don't think they got to use them. I don't think they got to use every play in their playbook that they had coming into this game. Again, this is Brian Flores first game calling it for this team. So there's going to be some learning, especially when you when you have a different quarterback coming in, that's going to adjust your game plan. That's going to adjust the way you're thinking about it, but nobody panic. That's the big thing. Nobody panic this entire game either side of the ball. That's the point of having veteran players on both sides of the ball.

You got a veteran offensive player at year receiver in Jackson Smith and Jigba. You got a former triple crown winner and Cooper Cup who made big plays down the stretch. You got a veteran quarterback and Drew Locke who knows, hey, I don't have to win this game. I just have to get the ball to my playmakers in space and allow them to do what they did. And against a really tough defensive line. This offensive line stood up as best they could. They didn't give up a ton of sacks. They tried to keep, you know, their Milton Williams is a good player. He's going to be there. He's going to call some disruptions. It's the first game. You're going to go through your growing pains, but it seems like there's positive news. Hi, this is highly breakman, Angela Jaretana, Jeremy Colhane, Patrick McDonald, and we're the hosts of the artists on artists on artists on artists podcast. The improvised character comedy podcast were each week a new panel of artists discuss their craft. Join us for a panel of wellness influencers. What I try to do is foe journal. I don't know if you guys heard of foe journaling. Yeah, it's reading. It's called reading. So you're so we don't like to use that word anymore.

Okay, a panel of New York cartoonists. Have you guys done Terry Gross's Peloton class? No, I've been dying too. I'm so sorry. I'm seeing a reading of Sadako in the Pousin Thousand Paper Cranes by Audrement Donald at the Wonderland Bookstore. That's crazy. I went to the Wonderland Bookstore yesterday and I heard Nora Jones do a reading of Zero Dark Thirty. No way. Patrick of the last bookstore though, Kim Ketrol is reading the guitar tabs of yesterday. A panel of Eurovision participants. And we do a little Halloween sometimes. Does the Pope dress up? He, he winks on Halloween. It's right up next to the microphone. I hear you get the elbows here. But to the people who grew up here, it's everything.

What happens when a quiet Tennessee town becomes the front line in a battle over the future of America? Developers with right wing ties have purchased hundreds of acres of land in the area. The first thing you see when it pops up is high nears and apple etch. But they weren't just planning houses. We need cities on a shining hill that exemplify and embody the Christian way of life. Stop right there. Is that normal? A podcast about what happens when a small town becomes the site of a social experiment. God need mental rule. Great. And decides to fight back. Do not use my hard work to sell your bull. They're not just opposing what's being planned for here. Our hometown is not a test to. They feel like they're standing in opposition to an entire administration. Guess you didn't move in on a bunch of dumb hillbilly's now did you? Listen to our town on the I heart radio app Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Hey, this is Robert Lam and this is Joe McCormick and we're the hosts of the Stuff to Blow Your Mind podcast. This week on the show it's Star Trek.

So we're going to be talking about the board all week long. Are you ready to get some probes put in your flesh? That's right. Tune in resistance is futile. We're going to talk science, the culture of the board, various interpretations and we're going to talk about Star Trek first contact on Weird House Cinema on Friday. Listen to Stuff to Blow Your Mind on the I heart radio app Apple podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts. Mike McDonald thinks it's not too serious with Sam. Don't they're hopeful for positive deal his first test have been promising. They think they're going to, you know, they think they dodge the bullet, but we'll see. I don't think I don't think you'll know until until it happens. They got great news back on. Let me read it. Let me read it because Adam Shafter just tweeted out. See all Mike McDonald said the team got great news back on Sam. Don't know and the doctors do not believe his quarterbacks hit is fractured in MRI Thursday is expected to tell the team more. That's as good as you can get in this situation until you get an MRI and MRI might reveal some, you know, it can get tricky, but they can test for a lot of those things.

If he's not feeling a pinch and impingement of things like that, I think, you know, if the team feels good about it, I feel good about it. They're playing Arizona Cardinals. There's no easy games in this league. There's no give me or you know games you can overlook, but they got a long week to heal. Long week to figure things out and they got a chance to continue to attack this defense has has to be feeling really good about what they did being able to create those turnovers being able to swarm in the way they did. And being able to just stand up and keep giving their offensive chance, keep giving your offensive chance. That's what great defenses do. They keep giving their offense to ball and keep giving them a chance. And if you look at this, this game compared to the Super Bowl, the Seahawks allowed 13 points in a Super Bowl. They allowed 10 today. They allowed 4.9 yards per play in the Super Bowl. They allowed 4.1 in this game. They had three takeaways in a Super Bowl. They had three takeaways in this game. Look, seems like Mike McDonald might have this this this offense figured out he might have Drake made figured out Drake may again needs to go back to the drawing board.

He's a long way away from the all pro quarterback that we watched last year that that came second in the MVP race. I think obviously what happened to AJ Brown is going to be a big deal there. Obviously he left with injury. I'm not sure if it's a high ankle sprain. There's been some rumors about an Achilles. I don't think it was an Achilles because they saying he walked out of the building in a boot. I don't know many people walking out of of a building with a boot. No crutches coming off a rupture to Achilles, but Matt Collins stepped up late in that game for the New England Patriots. But again, once they lost AJ Brown, it was a different offense. It was a different. It was a less threatening offense. And I still you know, I know everybody was looking for Douglas and he made some plays as as much as he could. But Romeo dobs didn't didn't flash in a way that that we kind of what would expect them to, especially once AJ, AJ Brown went out and I think that's going to be a concern if AJ Brown's out for an extended amount of time for the New England Patriots, what are they going to look like offensively if they can't depend on Douglas if they can't truly depend on Romeo dobs.

I mean, what are they going to do? And I that's a question I can't answer. Remundra Stevenson looked solid. I mean, he had some some carries where he looked like he, you know, broke a few tackles and got more than what was there, but it was nothing special. And again, if Drake made struggles in the way he did today, I just don't I just don't see it. It going really well. Football is back. And if you're getting ready for the season, pull up to your local Liz, the exclusive 47 NFL collection is available only in store at Liz. And this gear is the gear you're going to need if you're going all in all season. No doubt about it. We're talking NFL graphic tease, the iconic 47 hitch, headwear silhouette. Richard, you like this man? I love this. The Detroit Lions 47 hitch headwear I got on and fan gear that looks good on game day Monday morning and every day in between.

And listen, I know a little something about being all in the Legion of Boom energy. It was not casual. We didn't walk on the field, hoping people noticed us. We set the tone. We brought the energy. We made sure everybody knew exactly who they were dealing with. That's how you should wrap your team. Richard confidence. No apologies. Whether you're hosting the crew watching the family tailgating before the game or sitting across from somebody wearing the wrong colors. Get to your local lids and wrap your squad the right way. Football isn't just a Sunday thing. It's a rivalry. It's tradition. It's pride. It's who you are all week long. So don't wait until kick off to get ready. Pull up to lids and go all in all season only in store at Liz. And sorry, I mean, you're looking at somebody's fan reactions because last year they're comparing this interception play that that Josh Joe made to the non interception that to Rick Woulin was involved in where you know the 49ers tied in was able to step in front of them and save the game for the 49ers and win that one in this year.

Josh Joe makes a spectacular acrobatic catch keeps two feet in. And again, you've got to give the Seattle Seahawks and John Stiner. It's on a credit for retaining Josh Joe for prioritizing Josh Joe and what he would do. This offseason, obviously, the other corner is going to be a point of contention. They were without starters. They're without Nick Mn. Worry, who's a huge, huge, huge part of what this defense does and disguising alone with with Devon with her spoon. But once they get these guys back once they get tired, Kata, once they get Nick Mn. Worry back. I mean, the sky's the limit. These guys are big time playmakers. They're big time factors in this offense. And then on the offensive side, once you get Sam Donald back, they were able to beat the Super Bowl runner-ups with Drew Locke just getting the ball, figured it out as he go, making sure he got the ball into his playmakers hands. And I thought this was a solid game for Jeterian Price. Special teams wise, it was a solid game. I think this is as good as you can expect from the Seahawks under the circumstances. I think everybody should be happy. It's incredibly excited for this season because these guys made it happen. They overcame the adversity.

Everything, not everything that could have went wrong, but a lot of things that could have went go wrong went wrong in this game and they overcame it and they kept battling. Again, championship spirit, championship metal. Those things were shown in this game. And I think again, this is going to be a tough out for any team in this national football league, regardless. If you come into Seattle, don't expect to leave here. What a win. If you do, you might limp out of there with a win. But this is going to be a tough team and I expect them to be competing for Super Bowl this year. This game did nothing to put that fire out. Great win for the Seattle Seahawks. This leaves Patriots fans with more questions and answers. It's drake May regressing. I don't think so. I think Mike McDonald's defense is a tough matchup for everybody. The looks that they get the confusion that they cause, the late rotations and the work that the safeties do. It puts a lot of pressure on the quarterback, especially throughout the game. And I think, you know, it just came down to drake May making a few mistakes. Now, can he recover from a game like this or is he putting things on film that other teams can kind of piggyback off of it and cause the same issues for him. We shall see. But again, this is why I had Buffalo winning that AFC East.

I know you guys didn't like to hear Patriots fans. This is why because you just never know life looked like a box of chocolate for his gum said you never know what you're going to get. But that's all I got for you guys tonight. I appreciate you guys as always joining me tonight. This is the first summary of the season and it had to be the Seahawks Super Bowl champions pull out a win at home the night I raised a flag. It just feels good. It feels like I was a part of it. Feels like I helped give the energy defense energy defense wins championships and it's proven again. Appreciate you guys joining me. You could be anywhere in the world, but you're here with me. Seahawks fans sleep well tonight. Everybody else. Beware all love.
