It's a great day. It's a great day. It's a great day. Where to? Where to? Where to? Where to be? Brought to you by s2r. Where to be? Helper produced with, it can be hecked
this year. With the K fueled school out today. Mick A. rac son of a it in the first place, we're just going to call them out regardless. Also, what are you just tired of hearing about? Like in the dead of summer, as things just are crawling along and you're just waiting for more, what are you tired of hearing? But first, T minus three weeks until media day, which means T minus three weeks until training camp. And as we are especially in Texas and especially in a region of the country that loves its college football, man, I watched this weekend and it was bad. So I'm just going to continue to talk about basketball. I'm going to continue to ask the questions about what is the starting
lineup look like? I think we might have an idea of what it looks like, but I'm not going to rule anything out. What does the rotation look like? What does this team just in general that for the most part is the same team that you just saw last season with the, you know, a couple of what they hope are going to be critical additions. But this time of year, it's, we're just prognosticating. We've run out of material to give you because as the Spurs filter back into their practice facility, they're trying to learn the same thing. This is the part that probably gets overlooked that probably is, is not considered by the majority of people during the NBA off season. Guys go their separate ways. I mean, we've seen a whole lot of the Spurs together this summer, which is great. But this is where the reality
starts to set in where you're sort of away from your training grounds and you're away from your, your, your, your personal coaches, you're getting back into the gym that you're going to be playing in for the next. Oh my goodness. Well, I guess if the Spurs had their druthers, they'll be in this arena for the next 10 months. And that is the rock at La Canteira. Tyler, the producer pop in for me real quick. Hello, I like where when as a fan of this team is a fan of the sport, I know that you're a football fan, by the way, do you have a, I know that you're a Cowboys fan, but do you have a college team? If I ask you this before, I may have. Well, I didn't go to college, but if I had to pick one, my sister graduate for Man M. Ah, usually read for the Aggies. Look, I'm telling you, we probably have a lot of Aggies who are listening to the show. Also, Tyler, the producer doing really well for himself is not, oh, we don't have to get into the college conversation. Do we?
Okay. That's for a different podcast that is not this one. But we have reached the time of the season where we're just sort of combing from material and we're looking for the idea of, of, I guess, like, trying to put out in on paper in our minds, whatever it might be, like every little thing that could go wrong for this team, that could go right for this team. And I'm asking you, I didn't even give you a tease for this before the show. So I have tolerized for that. But I also love organic material here. And if I had to put out there, like the one thing that you are curious about that after everything that we've seen on social media, everything that the team has been doing, all the, you know, expectations, I guess,
like what is the team? For this team, what is it that you are looking forward to most? And maybe tilted to the side of like your biggest question just in general. And I hope that I have filibustered just enough for you to have developed a thought here. I mean, I'm looking for like execution as a team. You know what? All the way down the stretch, not giving up big leagues. Obviously game three of the, three of the finals four of the finals, game four of the finals is rent free in my head. But it wasn't the first time we've seen them give up big leagues that they built up before going into the second half. So it's a running issue. I want that to me. That's the biggest thing I want to see. If you build up a big lead, win the game. Don't give up big leads. We can, we will measure that along the way. And shout out Paul Garcia who,
since it's like this exhaustive every like throughout the year, Paul Garcia, by the way, of, well, the podcast that I used to host. When I moved over here, wanted Paul to jump on there and take over the brand of small market bias, Paul Garcia of the spot-up shot at Substack, he keeps meticulous notes on this stuff. So if you are interested in things like how many, you know, 10 point leads have the spurs had this year? How many 15 point leads have the spurs had this year? And by the way, how many of those did they win by double digits or did they just win? How many of those did they lose? Yeah. He's got you. He's got you. He'll go into the quarters and lighten the game stuff. Yeah. He is all over the stuff. Shout out Paul, Garcia. You know what? That's a good call. I think that one of the things if you are the spurs and
you're answering, considering all the the questions that they were answering at the end of last year when it came to like, what, what did you learn about yourselves down the stretch of these games? Like what did you need to do differently? And we all saw it. We all saw double digits blown in every single game of that series, granted they won one game. Yeah. But they were up by double digits in every single game of the NBA files. And maybe okay, here's the question that I have then. Why did the Knicks just not flinch? What was it about the spurs? What was it about the scheme, the game plan, the way they were operating? What was it that had the Knicks thinking like, 15 points in the in the third quarter, second quarter, that matter? What is it that made them think
that they had that was it was it pure confidence in themselves? Or was it something that they were seeing just from the spurs in general that they're like, we we're going to capitalize this capitalize on this at some point in this game. I mean, who knows? The Knicks had already beat the spurs in the NBA cup like in the same fashion, right? And not not just the NBA cup, but the regular season games. Every single game of the entire season between these two, the spurs had a double digit lead. We're also a more experienced team both playing together, not just on the professional level, because three of those guys played together in college. Yeah. They're more experienced competitors and they know that you know, it doesn't matter what the score is you keep playing, because you never know what your opponent's going to do. I think that also 29 point leads in the NBA are what they used to be. That's crazy, man.
Still that game. Still crazy, but still crazy. And while I would say that you're right in general, 29 point leads in the NBA finals, that's even crazier. The biggest lead ever given up in the NBA finals. I'm sorry. I, you know, you all don't have to hear that anymore. You're known. Part of the reason I'm like excited to see if they figure this out is because I know Victor Webanyama doesn't want his career to be like, he doesn't want biggest comeback given up in the NBA finals to be the first thing you read on his resume. I just think that that dude is an insane competitor and this type of thing that we're talking about right now. I think that and by the way, it's not just Vic. It's Stefan Castle, Dylan Harper, Devon Vicell, like across the board. Like these guys are and I'm not leaving anyone out in particular. I'm just saying the whole team. Like these guys are ultra competitive. And I think one of the reason, like one of the things people
criticized them for the last season was like, they're talking too much. They've gotten ahead of their skis. They're saying this and that before accomplishing anything. The reason they did that is because of their confidence level in themselves. And that is not going anywhere. So I do think that as we head into the new season, I'm sure someone, if not me, will ask about it at media day, talk about what they learned about themselves during those fourth quarters because that's a huge question. And it's one that not only do all of, you know, all of us want to know fans want to know. They're going to have to answer it. And it's probably going to have to take place on the court because whatever you say into a microphone only holds so much water after what we watched. But look, this team is incredibly young. I'm going to be giving them benefit of the doubt even early on.
All right. We got a lot more to get to. You know, we're going to have some fun today. All right. Yeah. Yeah. And trust me, Billy Donovan will be drilling lead game. Oh, yes. It's a Q. Shit. Yep. Sure. That will be huge edition. Huge edition. We've talked about it on the show. Huge edition. Going to be really critical for them in all facets. All right. Coming up next, we got a phone call. And honestly, and I hope they don't take this the wrong way. This is stuff I'm just tired of talking about Tyler. Let's get into that next. Welcome to your most rewarding NFL season ever only on Fandall, of course. How rewarding are we talking? More rewarding than a touchdown with time expiring. More rewarding than an 18 point comeback. Man, we just talked about a 29 point comeback at 18. That's nothing. Come on. Maybe even
more rewarding than an old line man catching a touchdown. Not so sure about that one. This season Fandall is making the excitement go beyond what happens on the field with the all new Fandall Rewards Club featuring exclusive offers, surprises and more every week. Check the Fandall app to see what's waiting for you. Look, I'm a Kansas City Chiefs fan. All what would be the most rewarding thing in the world for me is just seeing Patrick Mahomes playing good football and getting the Chiefs like at least close to a playoff birth. I don't know. Maybe the expectations are going to exceed that. I want to see them in the postseason. I want to see more Super Bowls from this guy. So like a lot has expected no question. But just the reward of seeing him in the postseason would be great for me. Make your most rewarding season ever with Fandall visit fandall.com to get started.
Hey sports fans. It's JD the host of Lockdown Cardinals and did you know with the Discover Cashback card? It's payback time when you earn cashback on everyday purchases. Activate and earn 5% cashback in different categories each quarter on up to $1,500 in purchases. That's 5% cashback at different places each quarter like grocery stores on gas and at restaurants. It pays to discover terms apply. See discover dot com slash five four to tails. Alrighty Tyler. Uh I feel like I made a mess at the end of that ad read but we're going to just move on and not talk about it beyond what I just said. So um I think it was fun. It was great. All right. Fandall we appreciate you. That's that's all we got to say at this point. Okay we got a we got a voicemail. Um we should look I am going to be um we we receive voicemail sometimes from people
who were just like oh my gosh I hope they say their name in the voicemail just to let us know otherwise I'm just going to try my best. This one is from Amadou and I hope I said that right man thank you so much for giving us a call leaving a voicemail. I hope I said that right. Amadou. Uh he's got something to I guess a question about Keldin Johnson and Devon Vassel. Hey my a Tyler I love the show. I was just wondering between the two most veteran spurs on the team in Devon Vassel and Keldin Johnson with money situations going to become more tighter in the coming years. Who out of those two do you guys believe would be better to extend? Who do you think should stay if it were between them two? I mean we've we've kind of talked about it on this pod like vaguely maybe not
directly in with a question like this like who are you keeping over the other like if it's a competition between them two which man look you all know me at this point I'm going to cover this team objectively but that doesn't mean that I can't be like I really like these two guys man I've covered them for the last you know whatever it is seven years that they've been around and and hearing questions like this it stinks because it's it's kind of reality potentially reality depending on like what is the what the contract negotiations look like in the future and especially considering that like Keldin's the one coming up like his deal is the one coming up Devon is under contract so that immediately gives him a leg up in the race but also like we got to be honest here right Tyler?
Like he's got the leg up regardless at this point yeah of where the contract negotiations contract years all that stuff where it stands like he's got the leg up at this point and I think that one of the things that I that I've felt has been most interesting and really just flat out like cool to watch from Devon over the last couple of years and especially this last year is the way that he has man see this stinks Keldin did the same thing he really dove into his role and like embraced it but everything that that that Devon contributed to on the whole with this team just stood out to me so much and at this point it's got to be him I hate talking about this but but it's got to be him it's got to be Devon yeah I mean beyond performance in the playoffs I just think that Devon's he'll set fits better um around Victor Wemanyama and around the other guys who we think are probably
going to have the ball in their hands quite a bit here coming in the future yeah versatility his his defense I think he definitely out shines Keldin defensively I'll give Keldin a shout out man he he picked up his defense a lot he did he did that was a big if there was one area where he really developed it was the defensive side of things yeah but I'm not you're right like Devon was well and particularly as like a perimeter defender and as a perimeter player in general kind of like a fits better a ball hawk like one of the things that Devon has been as proven to be really good at is playing off the ball like being maybe not I think early on like coming in when he's build is this this uh three in D guy yeah so three point shooters slash perimeter defender I think that people had bigger ideas of like him on ball and what he's become is just like I said a ball hawk in in the spirit of football starting like a free safety just finding his way around the
perimeter I think he's been so good at that yeah and um in a really meaningful way and then you turn on the postseason and he's like we've talked about before he's blocking seven footers so collecting uh I think across the board especially you know we we should have done something like that right we should have like like collected trophies for him um I'm sure he did I'm sure they did in their own locker yeah but like well we'd never seen them in the playoffs before we didn't know how they were gonna play it's a good you know what great point great point uh I think we got a really fun sneak peek of what this team is gonna look like for a while to answer your question I might do I mean it's it's got to be Devon at this point it just it just does um oh what it is you know if they can keep both I would I would uh
without costing themselves flexibility or like screwing themselves over in terms of roster building which they're not gonna do no they're no they're not they're not going to um that is for sure one of the things I've been most impressed by I remember early on with Brian right I was like man this guy like he's just he's really he's really friendly yeah he like cares about these guys and he has relationships with these guys and so I wonder what that looks like when it comes to doing your job and uh I think uh those questions have been more than answered and so if the hard decisions have to come and they will come uh I think that he will uh be making the best decisions when it comes to the group that he's around the numbers that they all have everything like that I think that he's going to be making the best decisions all right coming up next final segment I
got a bone to pick I got a bone to pick with another podcast silver and black coffee hour I mean I got that I've had on this show before top of training I got a bone to pick with we're gonna get to that next today's episode is brought to you by square the system powering so many of the places we already know and love whether you're running a packed game day spot a local restaurant or a growing business square gives sellers the tools to run their business without making things more complicated square brings payments inventory payroll invoices customer insights and more together in one connected system so whether you are a one location business or a growing business into multiple locations square gives you the tools to sell manage and grow without needing an IT team to figure

by the way I know I'm promoting them go listen to them they're good friends of the program Tom Patrini podcast yes yes absolutely uh Tom Patrini Aaron Blackerby I think sorry Aaron you know I love you uh Aaron Blackerby and Zach Montana by the way that is his real name I have asked him if that's his real name he said it's his real name I refuse to believe he's not like a Disney sitcom character but at the same time uh they all put on unpowered wigs acted as well you know I don't I don't know how you can have three judges think only one person has to have the powdered wig on right that's not that's not historically accurate what are y'all even doing I don't think that every single person in a jury is putting on a powdered wig but what do I know but look I'm giving them a hard time we tease this in the past so it's on us for not following through
what we did not do we procrastinated it's on me it's on me I procrastinated you're right you're right I want to take this time to say we think it would be fun and like I said our idea was different from there so there is probably nothing that would be admissible and court here nothing that we could like take them to to task for um but and I'm not even you know it's just being ironic here I guess court judges whatever but our whole idea was like peer lives and y'all have done a great job of this like with the voicemails with uh uh uh you know mailbags at corporate knowledge at the corporate knowledge newsletter that's Matthew tine and dot substack dot com but I feel like we need to be more official with this and and and say out loud like what we want to do is take arguments that people are having in their personal lives with their friends with their loved ones whatever and you know what maybe
it's not even basketball I feel I've experienced enough in life to qualify to to speak on a lot of different stuff but if you have a basketball argument if you have an argument or a debate over anything send it to us if we start getting enough of these and maybe that's what we're trying to do we're trying to establish the voicemail line which like I'm I do thank you for calling in uh you're just the latest in everybody else and I think and everybody else yes sorry you froze for a second yes every I'm a do and everybody else y'all have been great we've really enjoyed it we think that that thing is going to pick up during the regular season and it's it's going to be fun maybe it gets weird at certain points who knows but my whole idea behind this thing is like what is happening uh let me point what is happening in your life my friends that you want to have a ruling on what is
something you feel strongly about that someone thank you yes yes more pointing what is something that you feel strongly about that maybe you think someone else in your life feels strongly about in the wrong way we need we want to make rulings for you on this episode again shout out to them love those guys and uh accept screw them they they straight up thievery um stolen idea I can't remember how I said it or where I said it but I'm not I don't believe you Tom if you tell me I'm pointing again I'm pointing I don't believe you if you say you didn't anyway I think that that this is a good development for everybody and I think it would be a lot of fun to just do some silly stuff like that more across the the podcasts that cover the San Antonio Spurs including the silver and black coffee hour giving them a really hard time here uh in this segment but but they're
good dudes and deserve your support go listen to them for a much more free flowing like you know they they talk for like an hour at a time so a little bit different than this show go support them as well but screw y'all all right that's all I gotta say I'm kidding I'm kidding thank you all so oh go ahead go ahead go ahead pretty sure we don't have them in Napoli I'm powdered wakes and claims court ideas but no we don't unfortunately we should we should we should have filed for that you know we should have been like we we have a monopoly on this no other podcast can ever use this yeah I don't I don't think we don't think we win and and you know especially if it was like those guys with the powder wigs listening to our case in court we definitely wouldn't have one thank you all so much for listening to this kind of ridiculous episode of Lockdown Spurs
