Welcome to this day in history. It's April 5th, and a guy whose name has become synonymous

with horror, published his first book on this day, 52 years ago.

In the spring of 1973, publisher Double Day accepted high school teacher Stephen King's

manuscript for his first full-length novel, Carrie. King's editor told him that a major

paperback sales hit would allow him to retire from teaching and write full-time. For King,

that prediction came true. Carrie, published on this day in 1974, sparked a relentless

prolific streak of book publishing for King, with almost 70 novels and novellas.

Surprising fact, the character Carrie was inspired by two girls' King New in high school.

So on this day in history, in 1614, Pocahontas married John Rolf. In 1908, Golden Age Hollywood

star Betty Davis was born, and in 1994, musician Kurt Cobain committed suicide.
