I mean, and I mean that in every sense, outside and inside. And to me, we have a culture that is surpassed by, by, by, by no other civilization, but we don't know anything about it. So again, I think I said this before in the same interview, I think at some time before, my, my job is to somehow make them curious enough or persuade them by a hookah club to get more aware of themselves and where they came from and what they are into

1:01and what is already there and just to bring it out. This is what compels me to compel them. And I will do it by whatever means necessary. 2:02Trade Center and we have unconfirmed reports this morning that a plane has crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. CNN Center right now is just beginning to work on this story. Obviously calling our sources and trying to figure out exactly what happened, but clearly something relatively devastating happening this morning there. The south end of the island of Manhattan. That is once again a picture of one of the towers of the World Trade Center. We can see these pictures. It's obviously something devastating has happened and again, unconfirmed reports that a plane has crashed into one of the towers there. We are efforting more information on this subject as it becomes available to you. Right now we've got Sean Murtai. He is a CNN producer on the telephone right now. Sean, what can you tell us about what you know? This is Sean Murtai. I just was standing on the advice president finance. Sean. Vice president of finance for CNN. Sean, we're on the air right now. What can you tell us about this situation? Hello? Yes, Sean, you're on the air right now.

3:06What can go ahead? What can you tell us? I just witnessed the plane that appeared to be cruising slightly lower than normal altitude over New York City and it appears to have crashed into. I don't know which tower it is, but it hit directly in the middle of one of the World Trade Center towers. Sean, what kind of plane was it? A small plane? It was a jet. It looked like a two-engine jet. Maybe a 737. You're talking about a large passenger, a commercial jet. A large passenger commercial jet. And where were you when you saw this? I am on the 21st floor, 510 Plaza. Did it appear that the plane was having any difficulty flying? Yes, it did. It was peedering back and forth wing tip to wing tip. And it looks like it is crashed into probably 20 stories from the top of the World Trade Center, maybe the 80th to 85th floor. Reporting on this as we speak. This little girl in his arms. Did you see what happened, sir? Did you see what happened? What happened?

4:07Well, I was in the past train and there was a huge explosion sound. Everyone came out. A large section of the building has blown out around like the 80th floor. Was it hit by something or was it something inside? It was inside. Because it looks, everything was coming out. All the windows were coming out on all the papers. What is on the sidewalk? I didn't see anything. Are there any people hurt, you know? I just ran and everyone in the past trade just ran. I don't know if anyone was hurt, but I assume they were because the windows were all blown out. All right, thank you. You would have to assume a very, very terrible situation if that appears to case. Because I'm sure there were people up there in that world trade center. Now we have lost, again, our transmitter is on top of the World Trade Center. So we apparently have consequently lost contact with Dick Oliver. But we are on the phone with an eyewitness. Rosa, can you hear me? I know this one. There's a Rosa there. Hello?

5:07Rosa? Yes. This is Jim Ryan here in the studio. Nice. What is your last name, please? Cardzone, Arizera. All right, again, you are looking at pictures. Now we understand from a CNN vice president, Sean Lertzahn. It was an eyewitness to this. We believe a commercial jet is crashed into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. And you can see the smoke billowing out there, a flames billowing out there, and a commercial jet crashing into one of these towers. At this point, we did not have official injury updates to bring you. We are only now beginning to put together the pieces of this horrible incident. Another one of our New York affiliates, W-A-B-C, for their live coverage. We're going overhead. And then it was suddenly, I'm sort of trying to kind of laugh out of it. That I looked up and on the front, it smashed right down into the center of the World Trade Center. Big, big flash of flame. Fire coming up a little over there. All the, the, the, the huge hole right now. It almost seemed like the plane probably went through.

6:10I'm not sure. Winston, can you see, are you in the north side there where the plane made contact? Yes, I am. Now, when you see a huge hole at one of our earlier losses, Libby Clark said, not much of the plane came down off the building much of your head. No, I'm telling you to the building. It's in the building from what you can see. Right. Now, can you see if there's a lot of debris downstairs, Winston? No, because it looks like it's in right now. With the impact, everything went inside the building. Inside. The only thing that came out was, look at it, the outside awning. But I'd say the huge, the hole is, let me just get a better look right now. Okay, go ahead. The, I thought a hole takes about. That's our six-several floor we're taking out. I just want to look at the floor. Oh, people are having a problem. We see all of that, just a moment. We've got an explosion inside. The building is exploring. We've got people running up the tree. Okay. I'm going to tell the story. Okay, just put Winston on pause there for just a moment. The whole building just exploded from that.

7:11A high-top high. Okay. The building's still intact. People are running up the trees. Are they still connected? Winston, this would support probably with Libby and you both said that perhaps the fuselage was in the building that would cause a second explosion such as that. That's what just happened then. That would, that certainly, where they go. We are getting word that perhaps. Okay, hello, it's the people here. All right, everybody's panicking. All right, Winston, you know, Winston, let me put Winston on hold for just a moment. Okay, I was going to let him respond. I'm just out of the dine right back. Well, Winston, you know what? If you could give us a call back, I just don't want to panic here on the air. Let's just take some of our pictures from NewsChopper 7. Now, one of our producers said perhaps a second plane was involved and let's not, let's not even speculate at that point, but at least put it out there that perhaps that may have happened. The second explosion would certainly back the theory from a couple of eyewitnesses that the plane fuselage

8:12perhaps stayed in those upper buildings. Now, if you look at the second building, there are two that both twin towers now are on fire. Now, this was not the case of my correct a couple of moments ago. This is the second twin tower now on fire. And we're going to check on the second flight if perhaps that had happened. This all began at about 848 this morning. Again, what we know in case you're just joining us, a small plane, not a cessinotype or five or six-seater, but instead perhaps a passenger flight ran into the north side of the World Trade Center. As you can see, the second explosion that you're looking at now, the second twin tower has spread much debris, much more debris than the first explosion of the first accident. If there is, if is Winston still in the line with us? Okay, he's not there, but do we have, I'll just talk to my producer,

9:13do we have an eyewitness that perhaps sees better than we do from these pictures? Again, you can see that there is debris falling off. Come on. Okay, we actually have an eyewitness who is reported Dr. J. Adler's birth who is downtown at the time and he's on the phone with us. Dr. J, what can you tell us? Hello Steve. I'm actually uptown at 56th, then Riverside. I can see the World Trade Center from about, but then, they're building up to the top. And about five minutes ago, as I was watching the smoke, a small plane knife, it looked like a propeller plane came in from the west, and about 20 or 25 stories below the top of the center, disappeared for a second and then exported behind a water tower so I couldn't tell whether it's a building or not, but it was very visible that a plane had come in at a low altitude. Okay.

10:13It appeared to crash into the World Trade Center. Dr. J, we're going to take a look at videotape just moments ago of the second plane hitting the World Trade Center. That is spectacular pictures. I don't know if you can see the plane and that two was a passenger plane. If perhaps some type of navigating system or some type of electronics would have put two planes into the World Trade Center within, it looks like about 18 minutes of each other. You want to go to, we have another copy. There is the second plane, another passenger plane hitting the World Trade Center. These pictures are frightening indeed. These are just minutes between each other. So naturally you will guess and you will speculate and perhaps ask the question, if some type of navigating equipment is awry that two commuter planes

11:16would run into the World Trade Centers at the same time. Our director, you're speaking in my ear at this point. You are looking at live pictures right now of the World Trade Centers. Again, we now have two passenger planes within 18 minutes of each other smashing into the World Trade Centers. Dr. J, are you still with us on the phone? I'm still at these days. Dr. J, this is just frightening pictures indeed and I would assume or you would naturally think that when there have been less than just some of the coverage provided for us by our affiliate WAPC out of New York City. 12:21Exactly 25 years ago today. Dear listener, welcome to this brand new edition of the Pulitzer Grad, your truly Omar Moore here on a Friday September 11, 2021. This is the 25 year mark of a terrible day in the history of the United States where the largest terrorist attack in the country's history happened on this day 25 years ago in New York City, in Arlington, Virginia and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. And what you just heard there for those last 10 minutes plus was how the morning unfolded

13:22on that day 25 years ago, Tuesday, September 11, 2001 in New York City. I lived in New York City at that time and from my perch and brook that I looked over and I saw the smoke coming from the towers in fact the smoke wafted across the East River and Interbrookland and papers were blowing about. In Brooklyn, that's how far reaching this was. But most importantly of all for the families of the 3,000 people almost who lost their lives on that day 25 years ago. The impact would be far more devastating

14:26and painful. I thought that the first plane that had crashed into the tower was an accident, a wayward pilot, somebody who lost course. And then of course the second plane came along and I had a different view at that point. I thought that it was a bit more sinister than that. And the voices you heard on that audio for these last 10 minutes, CNN, WNYW, that's the local station, local Fox station in New York City and WNBC, WABC, all local New York stations captured the confusion and the speculation and the fear and the shock of seeing this, unfolding in real time.

15:34Looking back at it now, it just seems very strange and there have been lots of people who have thrown around conspiracy theories and I'm not going to be one of them. 25 years later, I continue to have my suspicions about some of the events of September the 11th, 2001. 25 years later, I still have questions. And those questions have gone unanswered for all of that time. I think in the audio you heard, Deerlessner. Where people trying to make sense of what their eyes and their brain were taking in.

16:44And who knows what happened for sure. We all know of course that they were definitely planes that crashed into the building and many thousands of people lost their lives. Those things definitely happened. But there's so many unanswered questions about what happened 25 years ago today. It was a sunny day on that Tuesday. It was warm and there was a primary for Mayor of New York City on that day. The Democratic primary for Mayor of New York City on that day. And Rudolf Giuliani who did not grace the Mayor's office in New York with any real dignity whatsoever. But who had been well liked by a number of New Yorkers, particularly white New Yorkers.

17:50Because he had managed to turn New York City around in terms of getting it to be a bit more clean and have less criminate. Even though his predecessor, Mayor David Dinkins, had done precisely the same thing and got very little credit for it. Suddenly became a larger than life figure in New York because of how he carried himself during this horrific day 25 years ago. And the media pumped him up, called him America's Mayor. And the primary for New York City Mayor to replace him obviously was suspended abruptly. After these two attacks, the first of which occurred around 848 and Eastern time.

18:54On Tuesday, September 11, 2001. The second plane that crashed into the other World Trade Center Tower crashed into it at around three minutes past nine in the morning, Eastern time on that same day, 25 years ago. So you had these two crashes, roughly 15 or so minutes apart. And obviously they happened while news broadcasts were still going on for the morning shows, the breakfast shows on the East Coast.

19:56And by the end of that, I was bewildered and like many millions of people across the world, glued to the television set. And I stayed glued to that television set for roughly 12 hours. By the time it got to nighttime, the sounds of F-15 jets could be heard, flying so low that I thought they were going to crash into the building that I live in, the building that I lived in. And it was a scary experience to be in the dark all the while hearing nothing but these really loud sounds of jets flying low over your building in New York City 25 years ago.

21:02A lot had happened prior to that. He had members of Congress standing on the steps of Capitol Hill singing the National Anthem, I think it was or America the Beautiful. You had George W. Bush who was president at the time, having had a horrendous first eight months in office. Being scrambled from place to place, went to some Air Force base, I think it was offered Air Force base in Omaha and Nebraska. I believe it is located in. Then he got scrambled to somewhere else, made a statement from wherever he was, and then made an address at the end of the evening from the Oval Office.

22:03George W. Bush was criticized for not making a statement sooner. And if you are old enough to remember this deal, listen, you will remember that George W. Bush began the day in a Florida elementary school, reading a book to largely black and brown kids in that elementary school. And the book that he was reading to them was called The Pet Goat. And he had been told by his White House Chief of Staff Andrew Cod that the nation quote, the nation is under attack. And that was what was reportedly whispered into his ear by the White House Chief of Staff

23:08Andrew Cod. And George W. Bush with that information conveyed to him sat in his seat at that elementary school and continued to read to the children. And he sat there for another nine minutes plus before he actually decided to get up and cancel his engagement with the children and get into action as the commander in chief as it were. A lot of people have forgotten that about George W. Bush. So short is the American memory.

24:12I remember being traumatized beyond belief. And I remember inhaling the smoke that was coming all the way across the East River. I remember, as I said, being glued to the television set, like maybe you were as well. And I remember the repeated showings over and over and over and over again of those planes crashing into those twin towers in Lower Manhattan. CNN must have repeated that image at least 2,000 times during the course of that day before they finally stopped showing it a few days later. I couldn't get that image out of my mind.

25:15And by the end of that day, you had newscasters in New York City. I think it might have been on Channel 2, CBS Channel 2 News in New York saying things like, well, maybe we should all wave an American flag. And it was just a strange thing at the same time. And I don't know whether or not there was some kind of strange orchestration in the media. I think it would be probably irresponsible of me to even suggest it. But it just felt strange some of this coverage. And it felt like when I heard that from the anchor, there was a female anchor who said it to her male counterpart on CBS Channel 2 News, the local news station in New York, it seemed as if they were participating in a

26:19rallying cry for jingoism and for war. I remember the news anchor saying that that we should wave our flag and prepare for a war or something. This seems like a war. And it was just a very irresponsible thing that I remember hearing a news anchor say 25 years ago today. Something just didn't seem right about some of that news coverage. That's as much as I can possibly say 25 years on seemed very strange to me. In the Overlord for the Dress, I seem to remember George W. Burst saying that this was an active war

27:21it was terror with a terrorist attack and the news bulletins had been intimating that throughout the day without any evidence but nonetheless were saying that this looks like a terrorist attack. And again, to reach that conclusion before any investigating had been done whether by the FAA, whether by the FBI seemed to me to be a little bit suspect. Certainly we know that this was no accident that you'd have not won but two planes hitting the World Trade Center towers. But to already assume that it was a terrorist attack, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. Forgive my naive a day. It seems a bit premature to me. It seemed like it then and in retrospect,

28:26it seems like it now. I couldn't believe the number of people who had lost their lives. And I was supposed to go to seven world trade center for an interview, a job interview that day with Salomon Brothers, a company that no longer exists but that had an office in seven world trade center. The interview was supposed to be around 130 in the afternoon as I remember it. But of course there was no way I'd be able to go to that interview once obviously. What happened 25 years ago today happened. And so it was that around four or five o'clock, maybe five thirty, that same day in the afternoon.

29:32Seven world trade center by itself just collapsed to the ground. Some people said that Larry Silverstein who had owned these properties in that world trade center complex reportedly or allegedly had the building pulled for structural damage and didn't want to take a chance and I don't want to get into speculating about things too much really here. Those were some of the reports that had been coming out. As I said, there were a lot of unanswered questions and those unanswered questions remain. And I think people have largely forgotten about this horrible day. And I think people in general forget, tend to forget about this horrible day, 25 years ago.

30:36And I think the question I have to ask is, so what have we, as a country learned, about the events of 25 years ago today? I'm not sure whether we have learned. I'm not sure that we have it all. You may hear people say throughout the course of this day, this was the day that changed the entire world. This was the day that the world changed forever. I've heard a lot of that in these intervening 25 years. But I don't know whether we really have changed very much in this country. And I don't know whether we've learned very much in this country since this horrible attack. We've had an insurrection. We've had a war two wars, three wars.

31:47We've had at least three wars. We've had an attempt to steal an election. We've had a presidential election in 2024 that many people think was stolen. And we've had someone in the White House who refused to leave once and may refuse to leave again. And a political party, the Republicans, that continues to make it harder and harder for people to vote. We have social media that distracts everybody. We have platforms that have bots on them, people who are not real, but are created by a program and an algorithm. And we have people who have high rates of depression

32:49and use social media as something that they think will alleviate the pain, but also actually contributes to that depression and feeling downright suicidal. And by the way, if you, or anyone you know is struggling with mental health and having thoughts of suicide, please call in the United States, call 988. That is an important emergency hotline to call. We've had a lot of things devastate this country in the intervening 25 years. And we've had Black people continue to be lynched in this country. That has never stopped. We have 600,000 Black men and later from their jobs. More than 600,000 Black women laid off from their jobs in one

33:50calendar year of 2025. We have a war going on in Ukraine that the Russians waged. We have a war going on in Iran that is an illegal war as well. We have an invasion of a country that didn't do anything to us. That would of course be Venezuela. And we had the same thing in 203 in Iraq. We have Cuba that the person who is in the White House presently threatens to invade. We have all this voter suppression. We have countries that we have turned from allies into adversaries. And we have adversaries that we've turned from adversaries to somehow allies or cohorts.

34:51And American life overall has become less exciting, less fun, and quite frankly less satisfying. We have people wanting to leave the country. With immigration going down. With the quality of food going down. With sickness going up. With prices going up. With shootings going up in some places. While overall crime rates are going down. With elections being threatened. With the federal government wanting to control the elections. Where in fact the constitution provides states with the power to control their own elections. With a secretary of defense who refuses to promote black women. Promote black people to top ranking

35:53military positions. With the Smithsonian head having to resign because of pressure from people in the White House. With the Kennedy Center being renamed. With all of these other things going on. Have we learned anything about the horrible events of Tuesday, September the 11th, 2001? I don't think that we have. And that for me is probably just as terrifying as the actual events themselves. In New York City. In Arlington, Virginia. At the Pentagon. In Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

36:55In a field. There are some people in this country and on this planet. Who will never believe that September 11th was a terrorist attack. And we'll believe somehow that it was a coordinated attack by George W. Bush or the CIA or something of that nature. I don't believe that that's the case at all. I do genuinely think that this was a terrorist attack. And I do genuinely believe that there were forces from beyond this country that played a huge role. And even though we all know that has recently as just what a month before that horrible attack 25 years ago, George W. Bush received warnings in the presidential daily brief that Osama bin Laden was determined to strike

38:02inside the United States. Those warnings were disregarded by George W. Bush at the time. That we know. And then when this attack happened 25 years ago today, we now know that Donald Rumsfeld, who was no longer here, then the Secretary of Defense, was constantly focusing on Saddam Hussein and Iraq, not on Osama bin Laden. People forget that Donald Rumsfeld and George W. Bush

39:06I think for his theory, for emphasis as well, for on top of that. We're looking at Iraq and Saddam Hussein from almost the virtually the beginning. Right on the very day that this horrible event happened. Even though the reports have shown that most of these hijackers of these planes were from Saudi Arabia. And even though we also learned that the family of Osama bin Laden were allowed to leave the United States on charter flights without any screening or any arrests, by the time we got to September the 13th, any members of the bin Laden family had been allowed to

40:14leave the country. Which for me is an extraordinary thing at best to be allowed to have happened when the news reports have come out saying that Osama bin Laden is the prime suspect here and is likely the mastermind of these attacks. Extraordinary. There were reports saying that Osama bin Laden had mastermind of it. Reportedly, there were reports suggesting that he did and there were statements out there suggesting that he said he was responsible. But we don't ever really know if he actually said that for sure. Then there was a few months later. And remember that video of somebody who claimed to be Osama bin Laden from a cave saying that he did plan these attacks. And then there were people at the time, some of us who were skeptical of whether that video was really authentic, whether that

41:15was really the actual Osama bin Laden. And remember that George W. Bush said he would hunt Osama bin Laden down to the ends of the earth. And that he's wanted and all of this. And he never ever caught Osama bin Laden. Remember that. In fact, he had had Deino's, did George W. Bush. Osama bin Laden trapped in the mountains of Torah, Bora in Afghanistan, I believe it was. And special forces have reportedly had sighted him. But for some strange reason, they had lost him. And he was allowed to escape into those mountains. Which really sounds very strange to me. And it wasn't until President Barack Obama arrived in office. And later in that year of I believe it was 2009, if I'm not mistaken,

42:21did Osama bin Laden get captured? And it was under President Obama's watch where Osama bin Laden was successfully captured and killed by the way, by the SEAL Team 6 that apprehended him. I believe it was in Islamabad, Pakistan. And on a Sunday night, I believe it was in 2009, might have been in 2011, I forget which year it was. On a Sunday night, President Barack Obama got before the cameras and proudly announced that the United States Special Forces had captured and killed Osama bin Laden. And I remember everybody cheering and everyone was just in a rapture with joy. Many hundreds of people

43:32stood outside the White House gates with their banners and signs and were really cheering and celebrating very proudly. And it was a massive feather in the cap of Barack Obama, President Obama. And of course the Republicans were seething that the Black President managed to capture and kill Osama bin Laden, something that the White President was never able to do. Some people asked, well why did you kill Osama bin Laden? Why didn't you capture him and bring him in for trial? That might have been a more compelling thing to do. But that was not what was done.

44:38There was a 9-11 commission for those of you not old enough to remember it. And there were days and weeks of testimony. And there were findings. And there was a book that got put out on what the 9-11 commission found. And those books were selling fairly well in bookstores. And then there was this effort to just kind of put 9-11 to bed. I also remember Rudy Giuliani saying, well maybe 9-11 should be a national holiday so that we can sit back and remember the sacrifices of those nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives.

45:40I knew some of the people who died. Maybe you did as well. I mean I knew, put it this way, I knew the companies I had worked with, with some of those people in the World Trade Center, I worked with some of those companies, communicated with those companies. I know of people who made terrible choices that day, not terrible as in bad choices, but terrible as in choices that no human being should ever have to be faced with. I'll put it that way without getting into anything more traumatic or graphic. It was a horrible scene, a simply horrible scene.

46:48I remember walking down maybe 5 days after or a week after. These horrible events occurred. To the same spot where they occurred, maybe a week after they occurred. And seeing all of this twisted metal and smelling the smoke and the asbestos and it was just really strange to see all of this stuff right up close. At a distance but up close nonetheless. And I was lost for words bewildered, struggling to make sense of it all.

47:50One thing that happened dear listener on the positive note is that people in New York City really begun to open their hearts a whole lot more than they previously had. New Yorkers got a reputation and had a reputation for being very much stand-office and maybe a little curt and perhaps a little bit. Not hostile but dismissive and skeptical. And New Yorkers can still be quite dismissive and skeptical. But one of the things I noticed in the intervening weeks after the horrible events of Tuesday, September the 11th, 2001 were people who were more open, more open-hearted, kinder, more considerate

48:54and more outgoing. I mean New Yorkers were an art and have always been more outgoing than many people or most people. New Yorkers have always been gregarious and garrulous. But you saw an opening of the heart in many New Yorkers after these horrible events 25 years ago today that you hadn't really seen in New York City. You could tell that people were more caring, more considerate, and were more open to looking out for their fellow human being. And it was really unmistakable walking down the streets

49:58of Brooklyn, the streets in Manhattan. And feeling that sense of community, that sense of grief and pain and fear and hope. I think of everything that happened that day 25 years ago, while I will take away, is that hope, that belief, the fear, the care, the concern, the open-heartedness, and the consideration and kindness of complete strangers.

51:04I think that's what I'm going to. Keep in mind. It's been 25 years, yeah. But it does feel like yesterday. And after all the politicians appear and do their ceremonial speech, Rudy Giuliani, who wanted a third term as mayor, because he felt that because he was called mayor of America or America's mayor, he felt that he should have a third term. His predecessor, or I should say, his antecedent, mayor, Bloomberg, Mike Bloomberg, did actually get three terms. Something that the city council has a lot to ask for in New York,

52:04allegedly paid off by the billionaire himself, Bloomberg. To undo their rules and allow him an extra term, which should never have happened. But after all the politicians make their speeches. And the present mayor, Mayor Momdonna, who's doing a damn good job, makes his speech. After all of that happens, it's the families of the people who lost their lives, who are left with the sorrow and the pain and the grief that they've been living with for 25 years now. And we'll continue to live with for the rest of their lives. I'll be thinking of them on this day. I'll be thinking of what their lives must be like.

53:14I'll be thinking of how they're getting through this very difficult day. And I'll be thinking about what they will continue to have to deal with on this very solemn day. There were heroes 25 years ago today, and America loves a hero. And so they should be saluted as well and will be saluted during the course of this day.
