While we're going next to the Midwest, where two men have been arrested in connection with the fatal assault of
Limerick woman Scarlett Faulkner, our correspondent, Petula Martin, is on the line.
Petula, will you remind us again, first of all, what happened to Scarlett Faulkner?
Yes, a Scarlett Faulkner, a 29-year-old mother of one little girl, was attacked on the side of the
R4-9-4. That's the road that links the village of Bird Hill with the M7 motorway
between Limerick and Nina. And she suffered serious head injuries during the assault in which
it's alleged she was beaten with an iron bar. She was airlifted from the road by the Shannon
Coast Guard helicopter that Saturday evening March 21st and brought to University Hospital Limerick
and she was later transferred to Cork University Hospital the following day. And there she was
put on life support but she never regained consciousness and three weeks later she died in hospital
and her funeral was held at St. Munchen's Church in Limerick City where her sister Victoria
delivered a eulogy paying tribute to Scarlett and she thanked people for the love and support that
had been shown to the young mother and her family and she set her family hope to get justice
following her death. And Garthie say a family liaison officer has been assigned to support Miss
Faulkner's family at this time. So there has been a development this morning. What can you tell us
about that? Yes Rachel this morning, Garthie arrested two men in connection with the fatal assault
a man in his late 40s and a man in his late teens. They're being detained and questioned at
Garthie stations in temporary under section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act. A 40-year-old woman
and a 16-year-old girl are before the courts in connection with the incident in Bart Hill.
The 16-year-old girl who cannot be identified due to her age is charged with assault causing
serious harm to Miss Faulkner. The 40-year-old woman who also cannot be named by order of the court
faces four charges and they include violent disorder, reckless endangerment and two counts of
burglary. And they are due to appear again before Nina District Court on May 15 for directions
from the director of public prosecutions. Put to the Martin in Limerick. Thank you for joining us this
afternoon.
