Kevin, look, I think if you go back and check the tapes, as the young kids would obviously say, we were very happy after the trade deadline. We were saying B plus A minus. Like a day targeted what needed to be targeted. The starting pitching, check, relief core, check the lineup, check. The only thing we were saying is to be an A plus trade deadline was, can you do something

2:03about second base? It wasn't done. But when you look at what a trade deadline is and we talked about this in context, are you a better team before the trade deadline than post trade deadline? And the rates clearly got better because Liam Hicks, Tyler Wells and Freddie Bellalda have been exactly what the Rays needed, a boost in each of those categories. Yes. I guess we don't want to mention Jack Swinsky. He isn't provided all that much. That's okay. That's a throw in. No, you're right. Liam Hicks, Tyler Wells, Freddie Pearl to address three needs, three big needs. And it's really evident at this time of the year. I mean, I guess we can start with Tyler Wells. First off, he was critical in the Ranger series. And then you look at some of the guys that are going down for the count, Garrett Clevver and Ryan Baker had that minor illness dehydration.

3:06And then many Rodriguez goes on the IL. It just stamps the importance of having a guy like Tyler Wells, who can be that bridge in high leverage reliever. And really, if you look at Wells, Hicks and Peralta, I mean, they've all done their part. But Tyler Wells has been very, very critical since arriving to Tampa Bay. In 16 innings, he is 2 and 0 with a pair of saves, a 169 ERA, 0.69 whip, 16 strikeouts. And he's more, he's worked more than an inning in five outings. So that could be key down the stretch, rest of the season into the playoffs, knowing that you have a guy that, hey, he can do more than pitch and inning for you with his pitch mix, his command. And he can be rolled out against lefties and righties. So that is huge that we have Tyler Wells. And then Freddie Peralta, I mean, you have an injury like Shane McLean a hand pop up.

4:12We were talking so much about, well, what are they going to do with the six man rotation? We saw how quickly that operated. And I know that there were concerns with Freddie Peralta right out the gate. He struggled. He was still trying to find his footing. Look at his last two starts. How impactful he's been 12 innings in his last two starts while allowing just one run, five hits, zero walks and striking out 11. I mean, he is positioning himself to get a start or opportunity or multiple opportunities in the post season and having him as part of the crew makes you okay with missing Shane McLean a hand for a couple of weeks. And, you know, first let me let me target Tyler Wells here. What he did when Baker went down in Texas, that won me. Like I already liked Tyler Wells, but the fact of just coming in cold from the ball pen,

5:14taking the ball and still having the, let me bleep myself here. Do you know what? Yes. The couple of times you will. Yes. Exactly. Loews. That's something that just check. Give me more of that attitude. Give me the guy that wants the ball and he wasn't supposed to get the ball and he showed you he can have the damn ball. Like, yeah, because in Tyler Wells, man. In 99% of the situations seemingly when Brian Baker's on the mound, the bull pin, I mean, pretty much the rest of the team is just an all of what Brian Baker is doing. Like if you're Tyler Wells or any other member of the bull pin, you're thinking, yeah, I can prop my feet up. I, Baker's got this. There's no. Exactly. There's a mentality over that. Yes. There's a mentality of like, okay, we can relax the games over and then to just have to click that into gear right away. So yeah, exactly.

6:14That goes into Tyler Wells and, you know, going more than one in it and it wasn't only in Texas. Like you mentioned, he's done that in five outings of his where he goes more than one inning. Yeah. I love that. And I like that the razor utilizing him this way. So really you have two guys in Baker and in Wells that come playoff time. You are. That might be all you need. That might be all you need with the really strong starting pitching and then you go to the starting pitching and pretty bad. Yeah. The first couple, not great. You know, the rocky start then I believe the one against the Orioles were not what wasn't that good. Had the quality starting against the athletics. Right. It is the athletics. But then really the last two have been terrific allowing one run with the 12 inning. So you do expect him to slot into that Shane McLean a hand spot while he's on the I L. And that's fine with us because he's he's been really solid lately.

7:18And again, yeah, it's sucked with the mits. It's sucked. But I think people have a lot of what have you done for me lately? Right. Attitude. The guy has been really solid for five bleeping years. Yeah. He's like, this is a really good starting pitching. And then I have to say Liam Hicks, man. It might be saving the best for last just with all the issues that he has resolved and giving us hope at the catcher spot. Exactly. And honestly, if he wasn't a catcher in your race fan, I think one of the bads you cannot miss. Is Liam Hicks. Why? It's a fun at bat. First of all, the batting stance just commands the strike zone. The swing is so clean. And the way that he approaches each at bat like this guy has a plan up there. And you can tell because when you look at his numbers, he's got more walks than strike

8:20outs currently. That's right. 10 walks, nine strike outs. Like, he is a fun at bat. And we've got plenty of fun at bats. If you're a race fan, you got an anna. You got Yanby. You've got Chandler. You got Junior. But Liam Hicks is really, I think, one of the funnest at bats you can see day in and day out when he's in the lineup because he can do so much. He can surprise you with some pop. He can surprise you with an opposite hit single. He's got the double the gap power there too. Control the strike zone. He's been a really fun watch for me. Yeah. And whereas some guys in no fault to their own, they get traded. They go from one league to another. Like Hicks picked up where it left off in Miami. I mean, first 26 games, you mentioned more walks than strike outs, but a 313 398 475 slash line along with three homers and 14 RBI's. And maybe as important as just the overall numbers there is he is a bridge between the big

9:23three as we've like to refer to in the bottom of the order. So you have that that extra little bit of beef in there. And then you throw in Chandler. It makes just adding one guy like that makes the lineup that much more dense. Because we'd have to dive into the numbers a little bit more, but the race seem comfortable or okay with what he's done behind the plate at the catcher position. And he's going to be a guy who should be a part of this team for the next couple years because he does have significant control. So that's huge in and of its own as well. Like I can't remember a trade deadline where you have three guys that have been this impactful. I mean, we've seen deadlines where a player to, you know, comes out and really puts a foothold, but like to get a check mark on Hicks, check mark on Wells, check mark on

10:27Peralta. Like you really got to give Eric Neander and company credit for making these moves at the right time. Oh, absolutely. You have to. And when you talk about the lineup construction here, which, you know, we were banging the drum. You've got to have some protection for junior. Some people online that are incredibly loud, but wrong. It doesn't matter. It doesn't, you can, it is the line of the construction that's bull crap. You only gain like, wow, just a little bit of value. It really doesn't matter to have protection. Well, 100 plus years of baseball knowledge and tradition. That's giving us. Yes, it's just common sense. Why would I pitch to you when the guy behind you is no threat to me? And that's what kept happening. And that's why you see, yes, you're coming in. It has been great with this play discipline. But when you look at the jump and the walk rate, it's like, yeah, I could tell. I could talk to you. They don't want to do that. But you add a Liam Hicks behind him.

11:27You can see in junior splits, when he hits second, third or fourth in the order, it's way better if it's second or third because he's got some knee behind him. And now with Liam Hicks, you add that fourth guy in the lineup. And then Chandler has become that fifth hole in the lineup, which is basically a new lead off spot. They're treating it because the second part of the lineup is like the dynamic. We have fun. We have speed. You know, it's the Johnny Vellucas is the Victor Mesa, Jr. It's Cedric Mullins. It's Chandler Simpson. So it's like two different lineups operating and feeding themselves in a symbiotic way that makes it really fun. And Liam Hicks is critical because he's now giving that protection to Junior. With that, out of these three names, which player has been most impactful in your estimation, has it been Hicks, has it been Wells, has it been Peralta? And it's a little bit apples and oranges when you're dealing with a starter, a reliever,

12:27and a position player. And even look like we talked about Hicks, say he was just a first base or a D H only guy, he would still be extremely valuable as part of this lineup. But the fact that he's playing catcher is just the cherry on top for all the all that the race have gone through with that position over the years. I don't have the numbers on me, but I would be very doubtful to see any race catcher in history for in 26 games to have a 313, 398, 475, slash line, more walks and strikeouts. If that has ever happened, even over a 26 games sample size, Zanino hasn't done it, Fortez hasn't done it, I don't think. I mean, it's been really hard to have you done it. And the all star year maybe 26 games, maybe Wilson Ramos in his all star year, maybe Travis Darnell in 2019, like those are all between.

13:28It's you and far between. But it's too far. So yeah, it has to go to Hicks. It has to go to land Hicks. And again, the fact that he's going to be sticking around really makes it cool. I don't see his numbers plummeting means, you know, with Peralta, he's going to be a free agent after this year. Tyler Wells, reliever sometimes their volatile things can happen. I mean, I still expect him to be a key as long as he's in a raise you to form. But yeah, just real quick on this, it would be pretty cool to see a postseason game where, I don't know, Drew Rasmussen throws six innings. Tyler Wells gets the seventh and eighth. Brian Baker closes the ninth. He just used three pictures. I love it. Yeah, I love it. Something to think about. All right, moving on. Chandler Simpson is one of a kind. It makes baseball fun again, Kevin, because. Yes. Okay.

15:33Let's go over the numbers. He's second in batting average batting average doesn't matter. I don't want to hear from you. I don't want to hear from you. Hey, if it didn't matter, why is it still a pre-immunistat? Not only that, but like it's the people that say batting average doesn't matter. Sound exactly the same as the people that go like he's only hitting 240. He sucks. Like you guys are the same. You guys are the same during the same room. Okay. You're yelling second in batting average. Third in hits. Do hits matter. I'll think so. Second in stolen bases. He's a two war player right now. And just like Liam Hicks is fun and makes the lineup a little bit deeper when Chandler is hot, which has been for a lot of the season. He makes the lineup even thicker. It makes you even think, hey, we keep saying big three with Liam Hicks in his first 26 game being real nice. And Chandler Simpson being real hot for most of the season.

16:34Is it not a big five, Kevin? Yeah. Big five, although we know that Chandler is not going to provide any power. But you mentioned something. How? Look, those overall numbers are great. Second in batting average. Third in hits. Second in stolen bases. Two war. But what he has done since June 1st is particularly remarkable. And that is due to there was an article by the Tampa Bay Times where it referenced some slight mechanical adjustments that Chandler Simpson made in concert with Chad Metola because part of the issue with Chandler Simpson was he was continuously getting jammed inside. It's pictures figuring something out. And Chandler as a young player has to find a way to adjust. So he focused on adjusting to different pictures, particularly those inside. And then creating a couple different swing paths to make it so. But since June 1st Chandler is leading the majors in hits with 89 batting average, which

17:35some people say doesn't matter. Three 65 batting average since June 1st. And he's also first in stolen bases with 24 cents June 1st. So he really did turn a corner after the first couple months of the season. And it's it's pretty crazy to think about that where he is legitimately in his first full season in the majors at 25 years old for him to have the wear with all and understanding that hey, teams are going to find a way to pitch to you differently and attack you differently. What are you going to do on the fly or over the course of a couple days or a couple weeks to ensure that you can combat that? So it just shows how much of a quick learner in a gamer he is to not just say, well, I can't hit pitches inside. There's nothing I can do. I'm hoping I can get one of the middle of the plate or on the outer edges.

18:37But yeah, for him to pick that up so quickly as a young major league player, just kind of exumes like how much better he could get. We know what he is and what he isn't. We know he's never going to go in and Bob eight or 10 or 12 home runs. But you just wonder like how much better can that on base percentage get? How much better can that batting average get? How much better can he get as a defender in the outfield and which find the way? Yeah. The defensive metrics all have loved the improvement in left field from Chandler from 2025 to 2026. Now, Steinberg and Field did not do him any favors. But obviously the work ethic there and it all started in the off season. We had friend of the program Kevin Keirmeier raised legend working with him in spring training and he's noted how that helped him out. He's noted also how Cedric Mullins has helped him out.

19:40So the raised it their due diligence in making sure hey Chandler is a part of our future. He is part of the core. This is who we're also going to be building around. Yes, Junior Caminero is obviously the face of the franchise but you can't just win with one guy. You know how I know that Los Angeles, Angels of Anaheim. They are new votes and they couldn't do it. Actually, they had pool holes in there too. So they had three goats and they couldn't do you know what. So baseball is not that as a team sport. So you have to build around more than one person. Chandler, they said he is a key cog. How can we help him? And one of the things was let's get him to be a little bit more of a valuable contributor with the glove in his exactly that. And I love the way that you talked about the inside pitches because it was noticeable. He was getting jammed like I need to put the ball line drives or on the ground to utilize your speed. And that's what he's done in the last two and a half months. Yeah, the the ground balls, the line drives, the bunts, just the choppers, the high choppers

20:42that he can run out to first. And again, this is a game where over the last several years, Statcast era, all the talk has been about exit V low, bat speed, hard hit rate in homers. I mean, those are right up junior cameon arrows. Allie, we all about that. But you look at Chandler Simpson. And if you were just to pull up his subon page and you see, oh, his average exit velocity is in the first percentile. His barrel percentage is in the first percentile. His hard hit percentages in the first percentile. His launch angle, sweet spot percentages in the first percentile. His bat speed is in the first percentile. You'd say this guy must be one of the worst hitters in the majors. And yet you look up and see that he's hitting 308 and everything else that goes along with his skill set. So it's just and I'm sure people do and I'm sure the baseball fought out on some people and some fans is that that sucks. Is it real? Yeah. Yeah, which is insanity to me because when you look at the numbers, bro, do I want a guy

21:44that hits 308 in my lineup with over 500 at bats? Yeah. I do. Do I want the fastest man in baseball on my team? Yeah. Do I want the guy that has the second most stolen bags in baseball? Yeah. I do. Do I want a valuable left fielder that has great range? It can make really good plays. Yeah. Yeah. Plus the intangibles of based on what other players have said is he wants to win. He's a winning type of player and he brings that energy just based on his skill set in style of play and the ancillary of when he gets on, he is helping everybody else that comes up to the play because he's such a distraction because there is the threat to steal and he's been, you know, a run producer, you know, sometimes you need sometimes a single is good enough to drive in a couple runs.

22:46So he's invited that as well. And real quick here, in which we should talk about for five minutes, but you can tell the defense and how the pitching and how the pitching relationship with their catcher. It's completely different when Chandler's at the box and when Chandler is on base. It's completely different than with any other player. Like he also brings that which is the human effect that a stat cast page will not show you is the awareness of damn, it's it's bleeping Chandler. Okay. Right. Everything has to be quicker. I have to be really sharp. I have to throw a fastball up or down the middle because I want him to have the opportunity to like it's just you add so much more on top of what you already have on your plate. Yeah. And it makes it a little bit easier for that opposition to make a mistake and that's exactly what you want, which means that yes, Chandler Simpson is in the middle of the

23:47season. He's a winning player. And just to get philosophical for the next 30 seconds, but I think the type of player he is also kind of showcases to kids that are playing baseball or the younger generation that you don't have to be junior Kim and you don't have to be a guy that hits 40 home runs and has the best swing speed of anybody sort of like with no, you know, some in these circles aren't huge fans of Dustin Pajroya because he was a Red Sock or Jose Al-Tuvae because of the Astros and banging trash cans. But guys like that who five foot five, five foot six undersized look at the type of career that they had. So you don't have to be what the the thought is out there of, hey, you got to be six foot two and 210 pounds and you got to be able to hit 25 home runs. Look at Chandler Simpson. He does it in a completely different way from I don't know 99% of the players out there. So there is an opportunity for you if you can make contact and you can run and you can

24:48field, you don't have to you don't have to be a power guy. You can find a role as a professional baseball player. Well, the Braves are the race counterpart or one of the counterparts in the National League. Yet another tough, challenging, difficult, trying series for the race this week is they head to Atlanta to face a Braves team that as of this recording are 85 and 58 and 5 games up on the Phillies in the NLEs. And if you look at MLB.com's power rankings, the Braves are actually second in those power

27:57rankings while the race are fourth. So this will be arguably a litmus test or a watershed moment to see how do the race stack up against a really, really good Braves team. And unsurprisingly, the Braves and Reyes do it a little bit differently. Of course, we know the Braves have a big payroll. They have a new ballpark. They have multiple superstars. Ronald Lekunia is starting to find his rhythm again. And we'll see how the race can combat that as they'll have Freddie Pearl to go in on Tuesday. Griffin Jacks, who we hope isn't totally cooked going out on Wednesday and then Nick Martinez on Thursday. So I don't know what we call a win. I mean, winning two of three, taking one from the Braves, questions remain on how good

29:02the race will be following a Ranger series where they should have taken three of four, but only split the series despite having a five one lead on Sunday afternoon. You know, we mentioned this on our Labor Day episode. Kevin Cash saying, not good enough to split a Texas. What would be good enough with the Atlanta Braves in Atlanta? Is it two out of three? Is it just getting out of there with one win and possibly playing well the other two losses? Or is it just what we have been being on the drum for the last two weeks, which is, I don't really care about race losses as long as the pinstripes lose as well. You know, that that's also a situation here. There's only 19 games left people. So does it really matter? Oh, I want to reach 100 wins or 98 wins. Does it matter if you win the division? No, it doesn't because you're already the best team in the A.L. And nobody's going to take that away from you. It's going to come from the East. So this series is going to be really fun because you mentioned that they're the counterpart

30:03of the race and they do it a little bit different. You know, they don't get as many walks as the race do. They're not as contact oriented as the race. They actually do have way more power than the race do, obviously. The race have more speed. Correct. The race have better starting pitching, but the Braves have a lockdown bullpen. I mean, the their relief core is incredible. And then when you look at the defenses, well, the Braves have a damn good defense. So what the race don't have the Braves have, what the Braves don't have the race have. So I think these three games are going to be really, really fun if you're a baseball fan. It should be. And I mean, arguably the Braves are, if we're looking at hitting overall pitching and fielding, they might be slightly more well-rounded than the race. But that's what you get when you have a new ballpark and you can spend money on free agents and you can get pretty much any player that you want to wish. Hopefully the race are in that situation or position one day where they can have a payroll

31:05of at least nine figures and they have a battery type development in a new ballpark and they can, you know, have they can extend a player like Junior Kim and Aaron, like the Braves did with Ronald and Kuni Junior. Here's the thing. And I just want to mention this, what should be fun about this series. Heck, it could this very well. If we're looking on paper, this very well could be a world series matchup. It could be. It could be Braves versus race. Yes. It could not be. I mean odds are it probably won't be. But this could be a prelude to what we see some time in October. When you see the NL, obviously the Dodgers are going to always get the highlighter on their name, but you know, they're not infallible. Like a three, five, seven game series, we didn't, we know baseball could go to anybody. So if there's a team in the NL that could beat the Dodgers, it very well could be the Braves and the race have been the best team in the American league. I don't think it's so crazy to say that this could be a matchup that we might see in October.

32:07So again, these three games should be really fun. I would have liked the pitching matchups to feature, you know, Shane and Andrew as well, you know, with Freddie and it would be fun. We're hiding them for October. There you go. We're hiding them for the world series. Yeah, but I feel really good about the Thursday matchup, the Martin Pettis against Nick Martinez. Now it's up to can Freddie do what he has done in the last two outings or can Griffin Jack's bounce back from his horrible outing in Texas. If one of those two things happen, you might get a series W in Atlanta. Yeah, that's the thing is Freddie Peralta, of course, has familiar with the Braves because he played for the match. So it's the chicken or the egg is do the Braves have Peralta's number or does he have or does Peralta have the Braves number knowing, you know, that lineup inside and out. What gives me a little bit of pause and concern and overall it's good for baseball is Robert Acunia and how he's starting to pick it back up. Like it is crazy to think he's been in the majors for nine years.

33:11Crazy. And he's only 28 years old. He's only a couple years older than Chandler Simpson. You know, you look at the the overall stats and you're seeing big numbers from Matt Olsen and Michael Harris and Drake Baldwin and Ozzie Abbey's peeked in there is Ronald Acunia. I know he's only played 90 games, but if he's getting hot at the right time and having big impactful moments like we saw in the Philly series, that's something to look out for and monitor going forward. And you mentioned Freddie Peralta. I'm also interested in Griffin Jacks and, you know, how much more of a leash does he have? He's spent three weeks on the injured list with elbow soreness and he's struggled in his return. He's already thrown more innings than any season since 2021. So the question is, is he cooked or is he not cooked? Is he, is he just figuring it out and getting back into the groove or is he just totally worn out and not going to have anything for the stretch run, which is a little bit of an issue for the race because that's one guy that you were relying upon to have some

34:13sort of impact. What type of performance will he have against not just any lineup, but a brave line up who can knock the cover off the ball? It's a playoff test. It's a playoff test for two guys. Freddie Peralta, who are you right now? Griffin Jacks, was that just a bump in the road in Texas or was that just a red flag that, hey, we need to do something about this? So should be really fun, a series to watch. Let's hope for a race series W because if it is a race series W, you start to breathe a little bit better with the, with the A.O. East division, 19 games left. Let's hope for that. Also against the Braves team that is seven and three in the last ten games and is 48 and 24 at home. So that would be a statement, series victory, and the race would be back on the good side of Kevin Cash. Maybe he would say, that was good enough. That was good. Yeah. I'm pleased with that. Yeah.
