We sit here on Monday March 23rd awaiting some sort of news
1:47
Out of the Carolina basketball offices. It's been a interesting few days since the Thursday night meltdown
1:57
Oh, not much Tommy just
2:00
Just same old same old right
2:03
Um, one question that we we have gotten quite a bit and I think it's a relevant one and uh, I think is this we're talking about
2:10
Is you what's what's taking so long with this process
2:16
And I really think how things transpired in the last couple weeks
2:23
Uh, kind of the rapid nature that it occurred
2:27
Is important here to understand why there's you know a little bit of time
2:34
since into the year and
2:37
Today Monday as we're still waiting on some type of word from from you and see
2:44
And I can just tell you from from previous
2:47
Coaching changes and searches and those types of things that happen in the considerations of such
2:54
Um, you know mac brown coming back for example and the fall of 2018
2:59
If you remember you Carolina played state on a Saturday
3:06
We reported Sunday morning that North Carolina was parting ways with Larry Fedora
3:11
And then I believe either on Monday or Tuesday mac brown was introduced as the next head coach
3:17
So very rapid fire scenario
3:20
And the reason for that is because you and see had known going into that state game
3:26
That they're going to have to make a change
3:29
And that there are already conversations taking place in the weeks leading up to that final game
3:34
About the path forward
3:37
And so when it came time for the end of the season
3:41
Everything was in line
3:42
Everything was ready to go
3:44
And you can check the boxes and move forward
3:47
And because of how things have played out
3:50
With the end of the North Carolina basketball season
3:53
Um, I don't think the process was that far along
3:58
You as of you know a couple weeks left to go in the in the season
4:03
All indications were that that North Carolina likely was going to you stay with Hubert Davis for another year
4:10
The caveat there of course was that there needed to be some
4:14
Some productivity some some good performance in the postseason
4:19
Some life if you will
4:21
Um, and then what happens is North Carolina goes into the the Duke game
4:26
Has a really bad 10 minutes stretch there in the second half
4:30
Uh, and then from there you go to Clemson and Charlotte
4:35
ACZ tournament quarter finals
4:38
And Carolina was just lifeless for 35 minutes pretty much
4:43
And then they woke up and and made the score look a lot better there at the end
4:48
And then you go into the incidental tournament and again
4:52
Kind of inverse of that cumpson game
4:55
Carolina looks really good for 25 minutes
5:00
And then the wills fall off
5:02
Um, so I think the fact that you see really five halves of basketball
5:07
Completely up and down completely inconsistent
5:10
So much of it having to do with
5:14
Focus in concentration and some coaching aspects
5:20
That really kind of threw a wrench into things
5:23
Um, and I think coming out of that game you as we talked about the day of the game Tommy
5:29
You Hubert Davis needed needed to win that game and then look good
5:33
To really feel confident about getting another uh another year
5:38
And now we're in this situation of everything kind of collapsed at the last minute. There's a lot of
5:45
Um, concern about the ability to fundraise for the 2026-27
5:53
Just because there's a lot of question marks about you know how this support stands for Hubert Davis
5:58
And so very rapidly after the season you start having all of these conversations about okay
6:04
What's the best path forward for the for the program
6:08
And it's not conversations like all right well the decision was made last week
6:11
Let's just go ahead and move through the process of getting this wrapped up. That's not how it was set up
6:16
It really kind of started as soon as that
6:19
VCU game ended on Thursday and so there is a process in place and understand you have fanbase once things that happen very very quickly
6:28
Um, and I do think you know as we reported on sunday that the national narrative is a little bit ahead of where things actually stand
6:36
So it's not as though things are not happening
6:40
But there is a process involved and that's what North Carolina officials are currently working through as they try to
6:45
Determine the best path forward for the basketball program
6:49
Talking with Greg Barnes here when I see daily about the Carolina basketball coaching situation and
6:55
And why things are running as they're running. It's a great point because when you look at a football
7:01
Season you kind of know where you're going and while uh a good
7:06
Showing against your rival can maybe be maybe save it usually in football
7:11
It is what it is by the time you get to late November
7:15
But to you to point the basketball
7:19
Kind of just crashed completely cratered there to end and that's never
7:23
A good thing for a coach already on the proverbial hot seat and so Greg
7:28
Let me ask the question that a lot of people ask me is does one game really make that big a difference if if VCU
7:35
Doesn't happen all we have in these conversations. I'm not quite sure. That's a simple answer either
7:43
I understand that but that also makes it very binary
7:47
It is just not that type of situation. I mean everybody's got five years of data to work with and it's not just result results on the court
7:56
It's how things have been handled you know behind the scenes you know one of the things we've talked about is I mean heber Davis is
8:02
somewhat of a quiet person is a private person
8:06
And therefore the the fundraising aspect the kind of the glad handing that has to happen
8:12
Is just doesn't come naturally tilling and it's not something that he's he's
8:17
Comfortable with according to a variety of sources over the years. I know there's been some frustration at times about
8:25
You know not being as glued in with some of the the booster conversations as as a lot of people would like
8:32
And which makes sense right? I mean if you're if you're donating
8:37
tens of thousands of dollars or hundreds of thousands of dollars or even millions of dollars
8:42
There's some reciprocity that that is expected
8:46
Um, and it varies per individual and that's just kind of how it goes
8:51
But when you when you look at it kind of the probably the easiest way to explain it is
8:57
You've got people who were ready to make a change
9:01
You've got people who you think heber can be the guy and that he just needs
9:07
Helping different areas to kind of help elevate the program back to where everybody thinks it should be
9:14
And then you've got a lot of people there in the middle and I think over the course of several years
9:19
Really since the end of the the 2024 season there's been a larger
9:25
Group a massing kind in that middle
9:29
And so it's somewhat a they they balance beam
9:32
Where you you've got people on the on the either end a lot of people in the middle
9:37
And just a little bit of momentum one way or the other can shift that middle group to one side or the other
9:44
And that can cause is the complete change in perspective
9:49
So the idea that's just hey one game really decides it
9:53
Yeah, that's not fair. I don't think anybody is going to judge a coach in that matter
9:59
But there are some you know expectations and some some ideas and play
10:04
That people you factor in and look I've been quite clear about my stance on the incidentally tournament
10:11
It's a one and done situation
10:14
It's very difficult to get a good judge on um coaches in that scenario
10:19
So when coaches lose in the first or second round
10:23
You know on occasion. It's not that big of a deal. You're Dean Smith won two national championships
10:29
Does that mean he was not as good of a coach as coach K who had five?
10:34
I don't know that anybody watching this would think that right
10:38
And it's just a it's a difficult thing
10:40
However, there are a lot of people that place a lot of value on postseason play for good reason
10:47
You know when in the ACC regular season championship
10:50
Is good it may not be enough
10:52
A lot of people really focus on
10:55
How the team fares in the postseason you know
10:58
2022 is a great example
11:00
Is up and down is that regular season was
11:03
A lot of people say hey got national championship game. This all it matters
11:07
So there's some of that as well. So
11:10
There's a lot of different perspectives. There's a lot of data that goes into this
11:16
And it's just the matter of when the season comes to a close
11:19
Where does everybody stand and that's kind of wherever I right now
11:23
With its two juicy beef patties and three slices of melted cheese topped with tangy big arch sauce
11:29
The big arch is what happens when you start making a McDonald's burger and never stop
11:34
The big arch the most McDonald's McDonald's burger yet for limited time
11:38
When you walk into a Burlington you're walking into amazing prices and great styles
11:44
That's main character energy
11:47
Because at Burlington the wow deals aren't the only thing turning heads
11:52
Find fashion the best brands new trends and so much more for every room in your house
11:58
Go ahead you deserve these deals
12:01
But seriously with these savings why shop anywhere else
12:09
Yeah a couple great points in there one
12:12
The money aspect of it is
12:15
It has rocketed up the list
12:19
In this day and age. I mean you've got to have it. You can't just smooth recruits and be the granddad that they were the
12:26
Of the father or the brother they all come play for
12:31
There's money involved so that aspect of it to your point about the NCA tournament and I tend to agree
12:39
Certainly judged on their success in that but there's a reason baseball plays series. There's a reason the NBA plays
12:46
Series it one and done is a tough ask and to your point about Dean Smith
12:50
I think people forget that he won two in 36 seasons
12:55
Think about that now that being said
12:59
The five-year narrative or the five-year
13:02
What we've seen is certainly troubling and that's why we're here
13:06
Discussing these things and in this situation with Chapel Hill athletics last question for you Greg
13:11
How much does and we talked about this a lot?
13:16
You know both air and on air as we were building to this point how much does the
13:22
So much going on in Chapel Hill have to do with all of this. I mean
13:27
It is it is quite hectic around Chapel Hill
13:32
With a lot more things than just a coaching search though. I do believe
13:37
Um Carolina basketball head coach situations probably
13:41
Or should be or has been at the top of the list
13:46
Yeah, it certainly plays a role and this is just my my take on it
13:50
But I do think you know talking with people say a month ago
13:55
Uh, there was the belief this is gonna right around when when Caleb Wilson got hurt
13:59
It was believed that Hubert had probably done enough at that point in time to probably get another year
14:04
Uh, when you factor in some of the injuries
14:07
And I think a lot of that was kind of to your point that there's just so much going on
14:11
I mean you've got the you know the Smith Center situation
14:16
Uh, which is which is a big factor and just in terms of taking up a lot of bandwidth
14:22
When we were having the Smith Center conversations you know one thing that
14:30
One of the reasons that there was a a fracture and communication in that process
14:35
is because if you go back to
14:37
You're really the fall of 24 and in ever since um
14:42
There's been a lot of focus on the football program and Bill Bella check and and trying to deal with
14:47
Some of the issues that your rose last fall last summer
14:52
Um, and that kind of played a role and some of this um
14:57
lack of preparation in terms of the communication on the Smith Center's out of things
15:01
So that's kind of an indication is how much is on their plate
15:05
Um, and you've got the athlete director of transition, right? I mean it's the situation where Bubba's the
15:10
uh, athlete director right now
15:13
In two months it'll be Steve Newmark
15:16
So how does that transition plane to things if people can say that as an excuse
15:21
That is an awful lot of
15:23
New ones to work through in this process
15:27
And then the other thing I want to say before we get off time. You mentioned the money aspect of things
15:33
Sometimes there can be major swings in that type of thing
15:38
That have dramatic um force in decision-making processes and example that I'll give as if you go back to 2018
15:49
I'm Larry Fedora coming into that year even though they'd had a bad year in 17
15:54
There was a lot of expectation that he would be back
15:57
You had the whole situation where they were building the
15:59
The indoor practice facility
16:01
Everybody knew that the field situation was a mess if people were getting hurt
16:06
Um, it wasn't a good surface the way they expected it to be
16:10
Um, you had some injuries a quarterback
16:13
So there were just a variety of things that kind of had worked against the football program
16:17
At that point in time and therefore there was expectation that Larry would be back
16:22
And really I think the the straw that broke the camel's back was that recruiting cratered
16:29
And there are a few things that you can come back from as a coach
16:33
And in football certainly recruiting is at the top of the list
16:37
And when when recruiting went south
16:40
It was kind of like all right well if you can't recruit
16:43
Then what's the path forward here?
16:46
And it made the decision a lot easier especially when Matt Brown kind of threw his name in the
16:51
In the ring late in the season
16:53
And I really think now I mean money and recruiting is all kind of the same thing at this point
16:58
With with an aisle and revsher and that type of thing
17:01
And so there when there becomes an issue of all right
17:04
We may not have enough money
17:06
They're appropriately fun to roster to be competitive the next season
17:10
That changes the dynamics very quickly
17:14
And so I think that's a that's a key point for people to understand as well
17:20
Money makes the world go around you better have it especially this day and age
17:25
Because it is a major factor that's Greg Barnes
17:27
I'm Tommy actually spend inside Carolina daily
17:29

We know how fast the world turns
18:01
Um by the time you read this could be dated but the information we've discussed is certainly relevant
18:08
And evergreen when it comes to this stuff for for Carolina basketball and Carolina athletics
18:38
You deserve these deals
18:40
But seriously with these savings why shop anywhere else
