Welcome back to the Cover 3 podcast with your host, Chip Patterson, Tom Fernelli, Danny Cannell, and Bob Elliott. It's your call for the best college football coverage from National Signing Day to the National Championship and everything in between. CBS Sports presents the Cover 3 podcast. And welcome back to the Cover 3 podcast here on CBS Sports, that's Tom Fernelli, that's by Elliott. I'm Chip Patterson, coming to you live at youtube.com. Size Cover 3 and everywhere you get your podcasts on a man, thanks for hanging out. Smash that subscribe, smash that like and come and join us in the chat, 8K, 8K, the Cover 3 tailgate where they're trying to put one second back on the clock because you never know what could happen if you put just one second back on the clock. We're coming to you a little bit earlier than we originally projected while also we thought we were going to be later than projected because lightning delays and baton ruse and

that one extra second in Ann Arbor have created a chaotic evening to which we will try to navigate as yes, one of the potentially best games of the night. UCLA Cal is also wrapping up the first quarter. Live bullets flying gentlemen, week one, wouldn't want to have it any other way. This instant reaction show like all of our reaction, instant reaction shows is brought to you by Modelo. We like to thank Modelo for their sponsorship of these instant reaction shows here on the Cover 3 podcast. Oh, ASMR Thomas. 26 season. Okay, we're going to be rocking and rolling through all of it. LSU is absolutely put the Clemson Tigers in a cage early and we could have some football sides to this. I think there's probably a larger conversation coming out of that one. Is that fair? I mean, are you excited to detail the ways that Clemson looks inept against LSU? Are you excited to detail the ways and looks away? You look tiny and slow and outclassed in a game that would otherwise be a measuring stick

for your program? I mean, that's not exciting. Not really. There's better games to talk about. Yeah, that's awesome. I'm always excited to talk bad about Clemson. Are you kidding me? That's for this. This is on hand. Who has done that extensively. Yeah, but the reason that we are going a little bit early and the reason why we wanted to capture this moment, the reason why the Cover 3 tailgate is absolutely rocking is because we have to ask whether or not everything played out as it should have at the conclusion of what looked like it was going to be one of the worst season opening losses in Michigan football history since losing the app state in 2007. The first season opening home loss for Michigan since Jim Harbaugh lost to Kyle Wittingham in 2015. Was there supposed to be one more second on the clock?

No. Oh, okay. No. I haven't seen this. I was watching Clemson on the tune. You didn't watch this play? I saw it. The replay the play, but I haven't seen the replay of zeroes on the clock. Zeroes. Look, Tom was writing. There's a lot of games I got to take notes on. I flipped the game off. So the way that I understand it, the NBC rules analyst popped on and mentioned several times this is our clock. This is the way that our camera is set up and the way that they've gotten everything synced. The zeroes were while the ball was in the air on the NBC broadcast when the NBC rules analyst was looking at it. Yeah. But you're not going to believe this. There's a lot of Michigan fans that are going to rush to tell you, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait. Bernie, and I can tell you why, you know, classic Michigan stuff. We went through this in 2023.

Blah, experience dead, y'all. Apparently, the Western Michigan player touching the ball. Because he was out of bounds. There was zeroes on the clock before the ball came down. I had. And the official NBC even said the big 10 is going to have some explaining to do after this. And officials usually come to the defensive officials and he was just like, no, the league's going to have some explaining to do. And it was horse crap. It was terrible. I if I'm a Western Michigan fan and I'm screaming that was rigged, I normally tell people screaming something was rigged that they're just, you know, calm down. I 100% believe I agree with them. 95% of the cover three tailgate in hundreds and hundreds of votes have voted. Did Western Michigan get screwed? Yes. Yes.

Hey, that's the other thing too. Like, Western Michigan dominated Michigan in this game. We have. Michigan did nothing to earn this win. I mean, they kind of played him to a draw, right? Which is like saying something in of itself. What? Yeah. The Michigan Wolverines, Mr. Big Bad Cow Witting Hand. That's what I'm saying, right? Like it's embarrassing to be played evenly for 60 minutes, which after seeing this clip, I think they pretty much did, right? You know, like to Western Michigan. I'm legitimately angry for Western Michigan just like for the general. That's that's that's terrible. That was just they completely robbed a team of a win. For some reason Michigan got another play. They didn't deserve it. They shouldn't have had it. The game was over.

Michigan had lost. They get another shot and then Michigan wins. So Western Michigan goes through all that plays an incredible game defensively. Completely limits what the Wolverines are doing puts themselves in a position to win the game. Everything that their coach told them that they had to do to go on the road and shock the world to start the season. A team that won its conference last year, a team that had everybody come back. Nobody went in the portal. That's a team that won a G5 league and nobody went in the portal. They all came back because they wanted to do it again. They wanted to try to get to the playoff. And then they go on the road. They beat Michigan and they get screwed over. They get bent over a barrel and screwed. And then they lose the game. It's one of the greatest injustices I have ever seen in college football. Like fifth down level of like a go chapter will be written about it the same way that the fifth down was. Yes. It was a horrible, horrible decision to put the second back on the clock.

It was a horrible outcome that Michigan was able to win because of it. And then they're storming the field. I mean, that's embarrassing. Thank God I have this Madelo to help call me down. Wow. I mean, did they give an explanation on the field for why they were putting one second? They just said there's one second on the clock. They said there's one second left on the clock. We're going to review it. There's one second left on the clock. Total game. Then they called to whoever the hell they called and that person said you better put a second back on the clock. I know where your family lives. And there was a second back on the clock. Wow. Tough scene for a dude for the for the moment. The Michigan Wolverines did not look. Michigan's got to play Oklahoma next week. Yeah, that might be tough.

How many well, it depends like if they get extra downs and they get a lot of things that they get extra plays and they only need five yards to get a first down instead of 10. It'll be easier for them. We'll have to see what officials there. I don't know. I don't know which officiating crew was in that game. I don't know what conference they represented. I didn't really have the games of volume on for most of the game. It was mostly muted. Whoever the hell was officiating that game better not be officiating a game next week. You can probably not any time soon. A lot of times the road team brings the officials. The Mac. Those Mac officials. Look. They go to Eastern or central. We. The step broadcast show that the thing that is. They're really saying they were big 10 officials. Okay. The thing that the thing that is ultimately so disappointing here is that football justice was not served. That if you did not watch this game, you see Michigan 13 to 12. You say they struggled. Okay, that's all right. They moved on. They played like shit. Yeah. All night long.

Well, excuse me first drive first drive. Sure. But then they couldn't get out of their own way. The rest of the way Bryce Underwood was having problems. They couldn't hurt all about this run game. Western Michigan had him bottled up. And then for the Michigan Wolverine's defense to be unable to get off the field for 13 minute drive when Western Michigan just held the ball for three and a half. It's like three and a half yards per play on a 13 minute drive. They just kicked you in the shins. Yeah. For 13 minutes and you couldn't get off the field. Later before the end of this, by the way, among the many things that we are happy for Madelo, their sponsorship of the instant reaction shows, keeping Tom's nerves calm here as we've got a long lengthy and robust show to give you today. It is going to be there going to be sponsoring our tomorrow's top 25 today segment, which

will be coming up a little later. Now naturally, as you know, we're not going to get the AP top 25 tomorrow, but we are going to still give you an approach. And I'll tell you what boys, there's a couple teams that won and are probably moving down and the Michigan Wolverines are definitely going to be one of those teams that won a football game and are going to be moving down in the college football playoff rankings because you can't get the top 25. It is fair to question, not just their top 20 bonafives, but they're top 25. Like their ability to be ranked, their deservedness to be ranked on a ballot is fair to question. I think they will be ranked. I'm just going to be a spoiler there, but I do think that they are going to find their stock hit in a major way. From the football perspective, Tom, what are the biggest concerns other than all of it? You were playing Western Michigan and it was difficult to tell the difference in which team was the big 10 team and ranked in which team was the Mac champion. And you didn't look like...

Would you rather have Davis Warren or Bryce Underwood? Michigan looked wholly ordinary. I will say, the defense cannot be blamed for this because they only gave up 3.3 yards per play. Michigan only had 221 yards of offense. They were on the field a ton because the offense was doing nothing. You look at the situation and again trying to eliminate the crap. The first game of the year, you see these things happen. You see bad performances. You see disjointed efforts, particularly when it's brand new coaches or brand new coordinators. So there's a new coach coming in. There's a new offensive coordinator. Bryce Underwood struggled last year and he was struggling again tonight. So you could sit there and say, okay, maybe as this season goes on, they'll be able to iron it out and we'll look back and be like, okay, that was the worst game they played all year and things will be fine.

That is still very much a possibility. What I think will be lost in the way that game ended was just how absolutely ordinary Michigan looked. They looked like a 7 and 5 team. They did not look like a team that will be competing at the top of the big 10 or for a playoff spot to me. That was my primary takeaway before all the crap at the end. Yeah. I mean, no explosive runs. No one explosive pass, obviously, which probably shouldn't have counted. They were just bottled up. They weren't getting like tackle behind the line all the time. There was no imposing their will. Okay, we have movement at the first level. Second levels picked up or out the gate. We're hitting 30, 30, 40 hour runs. I think you would expect to see, I guess, to West Michigan team like that. It's like, do credit to West Michigan for playing them as well as they did, but that is concerning. For sure, for Michigan to not create any explosives there. You look at their havoc rate.

West Michigan had a higher havoc rate than Michigan in the big house. That's not by a ton, but by any margin is really concerning. Because Oklahoma creates quite a bit of havoc, guys. Maybe they got some other stuff, but they better find it quick. Let me tell you about the beautiful poetry of Michigan football in this moment because we had Bryce Underwood and we were talking to him and we were trying to get him to talk about JJ Buchanan. He was giggling like a giddy little schoolboy about JJ Buchanan, but not telling us anything, like Kyle Wittingham had scared him into saying, don't tell these boys anything. He's like, yeah, don't talk about it, but yeah, he's going to be good. He's going to be good. Very first offense of play from Scrimmage. Bumbled snapped by Bryce Underwood. He's running for his life. Oh my gosh. Here's a shovel pass of a pass forward. What is it? A one handed grab by JJ Buchanan as he's falling to the ground.

How does this game end? A play that shouldn't have happened? A heave that might be short and who ends up saving the day? Who end up pulling that down? JJ. Yeah. 41 inch vert on that guy. Like he's a freak. It was game started, game stopped with bungled plays that weren't supposed to happen. JJ Buchanan saved Michigan's ass. So. Oh no, no, no, the officials. The big 10 officials or excuse me, not the big 10 officials. We'll check this obviously with our stats and research. The alleged big 10 officials. The officials of the game in Ann Arbor on September the 5th who decided to review and apparently, apparently have their own little stop clock that said we need an injury time extra second added on to the clock. That's what it was. You know, World Cup Tv.

Right? There's a cooling break. There's a cool. He forgot about the cooling break. Penn State's got to be worried now. They need Michigan to be like a resident, like a bullet point in a resume, guys. Oh, that's concerning. That's concerning. Oh, I think it Penn State fans haven't way too much fun about that. Yeah. A real Penn State fan, ain't thinking like that. They're like, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, you know, like just and it keeps going on and on and on. That's just striker. It was like a really bad. Ken confirmed. Yeah. But because that's the thing is like as, as things, you know, as Penn State just handles business properly, there were a lot of teams that didn't. That is true. That's a lot. So in your in the tailgate right now, go ahead and drop your prediction for Oklahoma, Michigan. Probably be like 10 to 7 Oklahoma.

Just games in Ann Arbor. Yeah. Oh, we're filling up. We're filling up the chat with zero zero. Zero. Mm-hmm. That's going to be our new protest. How do we fill up the chat with likes? Oh, yeah. That's a good video. That's also that's also advantageous. Hey, so anything else on Michigan, Michigan, Western, Michigan? I mean, I, Western played well like they played, like I did watch this whole game except for when the clock is zero, I turned it off. I didn't realize. And then I, like kind of concerned about the line of scrimmage for Michigan, like not dominating there is, is concerning like some of the past game rhythm stuff. I think you could probably anticipate. I think they will look better for sure, but I mean, they should lost this thing. Like they didn't really play well enough to win. That's a huge hit. You're not alone. Like against Western. You're not alone, but a friend of mine, who's a Michigan fan. And went to Illinois, by the way. Has an Illinois degree. Your roommate?

Michigan fan. Yeah, my college roommate. Yeah, not to out him. I don't think he can look up those records. He turned the television off and discussed after the first play. Because he was pissed, he just turned it off and you know, left the room. And then I texted him. I said, I used to just see that. And he's like, what? Yeah, we lost. I was like, oh my god. Does he know? Does he know? He did not know. Wow. Yeah. Quite an experience. The pain will remain only temporary. We'll see what happens next week when Oklahoma comes to town. The tuners, I'm guessing, are not going to get 18 minutes of breakdown. They did the thing that you were supposed to do as a heavy favorite week one as a top team. And put them in a damn body bag. That's what happened. You know, we'll see what happens. Keep filling up the tailgate with your predictions for what might be coming as the tuners come to town. Coming up on the other side, another big 10 team.

One, after a scare. And now we've got a question if our preseason expectations were a little bit off. What to make out of Oregon's close call with Boise and more next. Back here on the cover three podcast, where we had a, we had an interesting game taking place in Eugene because Boise State brought the fight to the ducks. A game where first and foremost, Oregon got the win. Okay. And it was not aided by one extra second. It was a fair win. I thought Dante more stepped up when his team asked him to. Well, buddy, if we were talking about Oregon like one of the best teams in the country, we've got some nits to pick. Got my laundry list. I'm sure you all have yours. Tom Fernelli, where would you like to start? Start with the positive. Dan, you look fantastic. Your hair looked great. The sunglasses were just money.

I thought you looked wonderful in all the interviews with Jenny. After that, your team did not look nearly as good for the most part. I was very, I mean, I think they were able to paper over it. Like I had to write the game or after this one. And the best way I could think of to describe how the game went was the talent and the skill were able to help Oregon overcome their actual play. Like there were moments of greatness that you saw that were able to help them put points in front of like the decorium more touched out at the end where you basically juke those feuds off the face of the earth and score it like, boysie didn't have a guy who could do that. Jordan Davis and had the long 40 yard run. If you take that away, they only averaged like 3.3 yards per carry in the game. So they were able to hit explosives and get points on the board. And defensively, they did a good enough job of holding boysied to some field goals and not letting them get touched out, which really gave them the shot to win the game. But just overall, like I thought the offensive line, there were questions obviously with

the three new starters early in the game. I thought they were struggling. They got better as the game went along, but they weren't really dominating now. We could find out as the season goes along, boysie state might just have a very good defensive line. That could really help them in the pack. Well, similar to what we saw with them, this against you and LV back last week. So who knows, maybe that's a possibility. The other side, the defensive line we've hyped it up is maybe the best in the country. It didn't look like it today. They got three sacks and they had five tackles for loss, but they really did not generate a real pass rush until the fourth quarter when boysie state, they knew boysie had to drop back and pass. They were able to just pin their ears back and go. That was really when you first started seeing them win consistently. Before that, they weren't. And then on the other end, like in the run game, boysie had no long runs. Their longest run of the game was nine yards, but they weren't really losing yards either. The offensive line was getting pushed. So they were getting like three, four yards a pop, which was allowing them to stay on schedule and allowing them to move the chains on a lot of longer drives.

So like Oregon overall, over 60 minutes, they proved that they were more talented, that they proved that they were more skilled and they ended up winning the game. I just don't feel like they really played well in any facet outside of a play here and I also think Dante Moore looked pretty shaky at times. Like there was the one mist touched down he had up the seam and then they went to the trick play with Evan Stewart. I think who was through it or was it too, I can't remember, but that was dropped. Like they had missed opportunities that they could have used to put that game away early and they just did it. And then also we got to mention too, you offensive coordinator, do defensive coordinator, probably played a partner. Yeah, I think you got to give a lot of credit to boysie, like for playing a really good game. That was the game that they really had to play to have a chance to keep this thing close. You know, it's a 24 point spread and they took it into the fourth quarter. You know, and like you look at this, I, I thought I think Oregon was better than what

Tom said, not like by a ton, but this really came down to Oregon was what, oh, three on, on four down and boysie was, boysie was two of three. You know, in a game where you're not getting like 20 possessions, like you're getting like barely more than 10, right? Like that, that's a huge swing there. They were both kind of iffy on third down. I agree. Like I thought Tom Teymour was like for the most part, just okay. Boysie was playing everything back, right? And like especially on the outside, they were allowing them essentially like the, you know, throw the source stuff and they tackled it extremely well up until the point when they didn't and then Decorium Moore shook those guys and he was gone. And I thought it took a little while for Oregon to adjust to some of the stuff that boysie was doing. And eventually they ran them out of some of that stuff and then Oregon was able to kind of exploit some like down the field, you know, in the middle of the field with some of those two I saved the concepts. You know, I, but like you outgain somebody by what to like 210 yards? It's pretty solid. Like if you line this thing up again, I don't think this game's close.

So I think almost everything went and boysie's favor that it could. Like I don't think Oregon looked like a national championship team today, but I think that's probably like Oregon C game and boysie's a plus game. Oh, sure. But here's the thing is Oregon typically is the one who is like not having to explain things away. Right. Yeah. Oregon is the one that's kicking ass and taking names and looking at the other powers and being like, why do you explain away that ugly Alabama win? Why do you explain away that ugly Georgia win? Like why we're over here actually taking care of business. It's not often that we find the Oregon ducks being the one who's having to explain away why we were 13 to 12 against Kentucky. Right. I mean, this was, this was a little bit of a, I mean, it was almost an SEC kind of performance from the ducks right here. Otherwise, it'd been kind of a like leave no doubt kind of team for the last two years under Dan Landon. Totally agree. I like, you know, boy, he just kind of kept it kept it short. Like it was, it wasn't like second and five, but it was like second and seven.

Then it was like third and four, and they just kind of kept converting, you know, as we mentioned with the four down stuff there, they never really hit any explosives, you know, I think a start was huge. I just think them just coming in and just like bringing it to them from the very beginning, letting them know who was who, what was what bad mental errors by that Oregon defense early. Like, like just not just the off sides, but like the late, the penalties. I mean, it was just a lot of stuff just wasn't quite screwed in. Not quite. Do you know what I, oh, um, I, I have time for it, right? Oh, yeah, of course. Yeah. In the, in the post game handshake, I am awful at lip reading, but I'm just going to believe this, but I swear Dan landing told Spencer Danielson, it's what we needed, right? It like he was like doing the like, Hey, thank you, you know, like good. The whisper each other whisper each other. And as he's like pivoting, he looks back and I swear he says, it's what we needed. And I'm like, yeah, that's, that sounds like somebody who is thrilled to be taking all

this bad tape with a win into, uh, into the week ahead to be able to work on that. Yeah, for sure. And like if Oregon doesn't look more crisp, they're going to have problems eventually, right? Like that, it just looked a little bit out of sync, you know, which was just pointing for, you know, a team that brought back as much as the ducks did. Not say more did still have a career, I'm passing day. Oh, for sure. With it all of this, it's like he did have a bananas passing day in terms of the statistics. And the explosives were there, which is so funny, Tom, because my notepad and my, and the staff box do not agree because times when I wrote down a miss for Dante Moore versus how many yards you can get from the explosive plays. And he didn't even have that many incompletions. It's just, it, it's remarkable the way those two things didn't connect in this particular game. Yeah, I'm not worried about them overall long term, but to go back to the point earlier, though, but like they were oh of three on four down. They have like two of them were fourth and one.

And that's part of what I'm talking about with their office. Like they couldn't convert like they weren't able to push Boise out of the way. Right. I think that's concerning. Yeah, definitely, definitely would be for the ducks moving forward. We think that all the all these issues are correct, a bull. Yes, yeah, they're extremely, they're very talented. Like I would expect, you know, they're playing an Oklahoma state team on the road next week that just lost a Tulsa. And probably should have been blown out by Tulsa. Yeah, yeah, if they're, if they look just as kind of next week, I'll start to be more concerned. But again, two years ago, they started off with two stinkers as well, including a near lost to Boise State. And then they went 13 and a one, the big 10. So, yep, totally fair. Um, would you rather keep it big 10 or would you rather go back to another thrilling finish? Because, um, sure, the big 10 would love if we moved on from the leaks.

I did not have a good weekend. No, they're so, all right. Let's, let's, let's see. Yeah. Do you, do you think that becomes, uh, I guess I were all, you see a la still has cal tomorrow Washington, Washington state. Oh, God, I hope that didn't happen. Well, not just from the position of, you know, the big 10, but big 10's maybe not as shiny as thought a narrative coming out of week one. I would, I would say the top of the big 10 for the most part was fine, except for Oregon. Like Ohio State had no problems in their game against ball state. Indiana defensively. I was a, uh, North Texas was moving the ball pretty well. Yeah. All right. Cool. Let's sit there. But why, why, why wouldn't North Texas do? I know they had some guys out in the second year. They, they just, they were not like closing space very well. A lot of their communication was kind of crappy. Honestly, like, last year, they would pass guys off extremely well.

Like what would, when, when, when, when a receiver go from one zone to the next, like it was, it was seamless. And today there were seams for sure. You know, it was, it was not clean. They were an extremely like veteran defense last year. And like, I know there were the jokes in the memes like, oh, they're a bunch of 24 year olds. Like people were whatever about them in the title game because of it. But they really did have a lot of guys who had been in that defense for years and had played together for years. It was kind of second nature for many of them. And now they're working in new guys were in roles that they weren't really used to and you saw more cracks in the armor than you typically are used to seeing from Indiana. So, so, so, SIG's going to talk about losing AJ Harris. SIG's going to talk about the fact that they had to play both of their backup corners for a lot longer than they wanted to. You know, and, and miss especially in a game on a day where it's just hot and humid everywhere in America, apparently. You know, that I'm sure the depth is tested a little, but they also ran the new Texas Randle ball well too.

I mean, look, you allow 43% success rate to North Texas. That's like a really, really rebuilt North Texas that I don't think it's a good team at all. But credit to them. I'm changing that opinion, by the way. I'm not going to say, yeah, I don't think North Texas is a bad team. We'll see. Yeah, I'm not convinced. Yeah, I think Indiana defensively played like crap. That's fine. I mean, you're, they just, they were not creating negatives. Like I don't think the D line did anything really special. Like, I saw Nick Marsh do something special. I saw Charlie Becker catch it between three defenders on the third and long. Like Indiana was an offense. Like, but I was saying, Indiana was pulling a rabbit out of a hat in North Texas. Does play defense to North Texas is going to step into the American. And it's not like they're going to get buried. India is run games suck to honestly. I guess the team like North Texas that has to protect those corners. Should we ever have without both their top corners? They might be without their top running back for a while, too. Yeah, I mean, 15 for 68, for turbo Richard is that's really disappointing against North

Texas. That's, that's not good. Yeah, it was, I mean, they looked like crap last year against old to minute two. So it's, it's, again, it's not one of those situations where it's like panic, panic, panic. But just I was surprised how kind of not amazing that they looked like. Josh, you were really pretty damn good. Yeah, I don't know. I think the Joshua, Charlie Becker, Nick Marsh is kind of a, that's, that that's good enough to carry you in Masco for a lot of issues. I mean, a lot of people don't have a Nick Marsh or Charlie Becker. And Indian has got two of them. But Nick Marsh had that great touchdown catch and then he had only one other catch in the entire game. That's true. But I'm talent wise. Yeah, I just, it's, I mean, and there's also it should probably, I mean, it was very hot. So maybe that played a role in it, but I don't know. I just, it was hot everywhere today. And I saw a team playing better than Indiana. Also, like how hot was it really in Indiana? Oh, it was hot. It was hot. It's hot as hell. Like 88 hot or, or like, it was like 100 something on the field.

Okay. I'm here. We get a lot of come on, bro. Florida, the only place it gets. Yeah, exactly. No, no, but it's it. There's, okay. I have a little skepticism when we get this Midwest hot like, you know, Indiana. I have to teach you about corn sweat again. Yeah, it's corn literally sweats, but that's how hot it gets. Vegetable sweat. You know, I was up in Maine this summer. Like we have a heap dome and I was like, yeah, it sucks. I said, like I wish somebody's breweries actually had air conditioning, but like, guys, like we're not dying out here. Like like, like, maybe we're just like golf in this. Main is on the Atlantic Ocean. Indiana is in the middle of land. There's no sea to cool it down. It's, it's also been in the heat, actually, heat index and the hundreds like all week. So it's just like the inescapable heat at that point. You just kind of go, it's Indiana. There's nowhere to go in it. Just anyone anytime. And again, all of this, all this complaining for a team that did put 56 points on the board

and and win. And you're too much credit. Too much credit. I know. For the Joshua, I'm going to say checkmark. Yeah, Joshua, look. Yeah. Yeah. Oh, Josh, you have a great or a farming. Just with all that blood dripping down his face, looking real good. Watersevers checking out everything concerns. Certainly things that you're going to be able to go and work on moving forward. But Indiana schedule as we have detailed is going to provide a nice little runway before things really start to crank up. Let's see, you want to do a quick word on Ohio State, anything there while we're here? Didn't watch the second of it. Did anybody actually watch it? Yeah, I watched. I said I handed like on the quad box in the corner for most edge. Yeah, there was Ohio State is better than ball state, even with culture cluster. For quarterbacks of the card, no, they just really could not keep up.

Can we remind the audience why we are a big while we are bowling state? Well, we are big fans of bowling ball state university. Yes, we are, but he's not as much of a bowling ball as maybe some accounts on Twitter wanted to make and look like over the week. I heard you were cited in a newspaper article as internet sensation or maybe that you had sighted you'd caused an internet sensation. I think I think tweets from yours were used in a, in Ohio newspaper to like, like, here's what to know about ball state. And one of their like five things to know about ball state is their internet sensation quarterback that, that internet sensation top for the, I'm not kidding you. Like, you know, five things to know about ball state. One of them was about the bowling ball quarterback. So you've obviously turned the nation on the cultural cluster. I can't figure out why newspapers are dead. So we went from newspaper from like online folks aggregating newspapers.

New papers. Yes. Yes. Yeah. This is a bud, bud. Come on, dog. We've been, we've been aggregating tweets for days, years, decades. Did they print the tweet in the print edition? I don't know. What's it in the actual print edition? Cause then I'm not getting any impressions. That's, that is stealing from me. That is about 0.07 cents that you just took from my pocket back in 2012. You could do 150 word intro, one tweet, 250 word spin. And that's a blog post, baby. Right about to end of those a day. Be good to go. It's like run a website. Jeremiah Smith with eight catches, 151 yards and two touchdowns. Are we going to have a Malachi Tony Jeremiah Smith tracker? He hit the high. It's been I saw that. Jeremiah and Malachi. I saw a Malachi. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Jeremiah. Many dudes. Too many guys hit the high. Guys, man. If you're a receiver, you got it. Oh, actually, no.

But I don't even know which way to point anymore. We've been having mirroring issues. Um, I think I'm with blood here. If you're a wide receiver, you're allowed to hit it. It's a weak voice. Hmm. Yeah, but like you got to start, you got to start the oral farming now. Cause like it's really all pill battle. Yeah. 100%. And too many good, too many quarterbacks had big days too. Yeah. No, you got to be able to fight through that. Um, all right. Coming up on the other side. A questionable game, but an unbelievable college football finish. Uh, you got some value sale on. Yes. Bob Chesney senior could not look anymore. Like I would think a Bob Chesney senior looks then Bob Chesney's here. Look like spot on. It starts screaming and Nico's here right now. He's the he's the Godfather of the program. Him in Bill Simmons. 1716s your final score. Auburn is. Yeah. Auburn is a winner. One and O to start the Alex Gola's era year seven for Dave Aranda starts with a loss. But as I mentioned before the break, he could have kicked an extra point.

Try to take this thing to overtime. Baylor marched right down the field. And if you're looking at YouTube.com slash cover three, you are seeing the finest margins of college football. If the two point conversion is good, Baylor wins likely nine seconds were left on the clock. If I remember correctly, but great tackle and probably a bad pass from DJ lagway, kind of kind of put him in a bad body position to be able to try to fall forward. Foo. This was a game, you know, this was a, this was a college football game with the fantastic ending. It was a DJ lagway experience. Real roller coaster. Um, I hope Byron Brown took out all the insurance policies before the day. I had Auburn defense of fronts going to have itself a heyday because I do think there's a hey, Baylor's defense like, I don't see if it's a good.

But there's also the equal, you know, credit and blame here. Um, the way that Auburn's offensive front was able to hold up, um, in this spot to create those opportunities. Shoo. What we, uh, what I'm just right away, Dave Aranda made the right decision. I think so when you factor in like the fact they had like carry DJ lagway to locker room, like how long is that ankle going to hold out, right? Like the, the offense there at the end, I feel like I had the upper hand. If, like, if you go back and forth and over time, you got to go run your best two point play anyway. You might as well run your best two point play now with a chance to win. I think it was the right decision, like analytically, it was also probably the right decision with your own internal, like we know how DJ is feeling basically, right? And, you know, Auburn had started to run the ball a little bit better, you know, maybe in the fourth quarter or so, maybe you felt like they were going to find something after being kind of dreadful and offense for most that game. So I, I fully agree with the decision. I should have been a better ball from DJ probably.

Um, nice tackle by the kid to get the guys arms to, like if he gets them around the waist, he probably extends any scores like he wrapped up everything. That was huge. Yeah, I, I agreed with the decision to go for it. Um, I didn't agree with calling a timeout while Auburn had 12 guys on the field. But, um, hey, that's just week one. That's fun for Volodya week one. Who's to say a new coaching staff has, you know, everything involved in terms of your packages. I'm saying they had 12 guys on the field and you, you let them off the hook. And then you didn't. Yeah. Um, yeah, I, I, I will say, like, I hope DJ is okay, but I would also argue that if your quarterbacks ankle is so bad that he needs to be carried off the field by his teammates, he probably shouldn't be playing. Do you think he should be throwing how many passes to throw 54? 54, 54 with the club foot. He threw some dimes too.

He did. Well, I mean, that's, that's DJ. He throws some wow throws and then there's some wow throws. I mean, you wouldn't trade quarterbacks in this game. No, I would rather. No, like if Auburn has DJ Auburn blows Baylor out. Hold on, repeat that one more time. If Auburn has quarterbacks in this game, Auburn blows Baylor off the field. And for those who aren't looking on a new might not have seen the game, Byron Brown contributed three interceptions and zero touchdowns for 74 yards. Mm hmm. Yeah, rain, rain is ass off though and got crushed a lot. 25 completions for 120 air yards. Mm hmm. Bro, that was like all screensed like I. Yeah, and even he ran 21 times for 27 yards. But this was as bad as he looked at the level of life and stuff. Yeah, yeah. Remember we came back from level 11. I was like, oh, Byron Brown looks bad. It, I haven't seen anything to think that it's going to work.

I love, I love wrecking presees and narratives. I'm just like, I'm telling you guys he's bringing Byron Brown with him. He's bringing Kishan Singleton with him. He's bringing all these guys. It's just we take this out Florida offense. We copy we're putting still be good. Especially like especially at the G5 level, right? Like if you run that wide split stuff with the G5 level, it's a hack. There aren't enough good DBS and you can find enough fast receivers just run by everybody. You know, like clearly like the offense still works if you run it well and you have good players. Like look at Tennessee, but it's not automatic that it's going to work. And I like this look like if USF's offense had to play beta last year. They're probably not going to be very good. Damn, that's a bar. What did Auburn Baylor look like like USF Baylor? Right. Yeah. Also, like the Auburn O'Line was concerning. Yeah. I also say is what are my strongest like notes here? Like, okay, okay, this is not going to be good when they have to go play the, I don't know the rest of Auburn schedule.

Baylor takes 24% heavy grade, which if you're not familiar, according to Game of Haper, is a 98th percentile performance. I'd be a dark green. I know. Yeah. I had to come on paper, but that'd be a dark green. I mean, not a guarantee, but I think you'll face in better defensive fronts than what Baylor's going to run out there. Although they were actually pretty good. I will give them some credit like that. Yes. That Baylor D line is, to me, it looked pretty decent. And they've undergone a lot of personnel changes. And we have called Dave Aranda to task for the fact that his defense was the one that fell short last season. For one game, for one week here on this particular instant reaction pod, Baylor's defense is a check mark for Dave Aranda. It's a loss, but I think you enter big 12 play, maybe more encouraged than you might have been otherwise. Also, they have Teddy Pundergrass's grandson at Running Back. I can cut a lot of different ways, Tom. Kind of depends on, you know,

what you're looking for. You're... If you don't know him by now. Yeah. Yeah, I'll get out my silk suit and start crying in the rain too. But because the tailgate is ours, we need to love them like they are ours. Sometimes they are complimentary, sometimes they are mean, but they offered something that at least continues this ongoing conversation of switching quarterbacks, which again, QB swap, something you've proposed, not me. Ashton Daniels or Byron Brown, who would you rather have? Oh God. Brown. I think... Well, the way through the ball lead 11 this summer really spooked me to be honest. The way Byron Brown did the ball lead 11. Yeah. The ball lead 11. I was like, oh God, this is not good. It looked like who was the kid at Liberty and went to Colorado. Oh, Cain Salted. Oh, Cain Salted. Yeah, I'm really proud of you. This is, yeah, one of these things is not lucky.

Things just doesn't belong. Yeah. Did you see D-Show and Party out there today for Liberty? I did. I had that one on a screen for a little while. That was a game. It's one of the closer games of the day. It was close. It was not entertaining close, but it was... It had some level of drama existed into the fourth quarter. It held you hostage. That's really what it was doing. I can't really turn it off because what if something happens? It is a really good argument, by the way, that unless you need to bet like $100,000 game, you don't need to be waiting to bet until Saturday. You should be firing earlier in the week. Why? Because Liberty Plus 7 was available for quite a long time this week, and you would have pushed. And if you waited to bet that stuff on Saturday, you lost. Oh. Okay. I was thinking more about James Madison and their defensive front and how they seemed like they could still get after it.

But then the offense took the field and I was like, oh, they're not going to run away from anybody this year. Are they? Yeah. It was very Billy Napier-ish on offense, I think. Derocka took advantage of the C's derockatory. Yeah, like Liberty also seemed kind of discombobulated on offense for much of that game. Right. Right. Like it was not like the typical good Liberty we would see with, hey, like, you know, offensive line playing cohesively, they found some stuff eventually, but like it was just... They also had like pretty bad field position for quite a bit of the game. Yeah, it kind of felt like in the first two and a half almost into the end of the third quarter, James, you thought they could just put them in the sleeper hold and just rock it out the rest of the way. Then all of a sudden, you know, get things rolling a little bit entertaining game nonetheless. Okay, do we... Score is currently 38 to three. Do we just go ahead and write this, uh, write this out a bit on LSU Clemson?

Or do you want to keep rocking through other games? Then we'll cycle back once it's actually final. So we can put a final score and a firm stamp on it. It depends on your definition of garbage time. Like by my definition of garbage time, we're here. We're here and Clemson has negative one rushing guards in LSU as 337. By JMU fans against Oregon, we are not yet in garbage time. So we guys, we might need to, uh, might need to pause on this. Okay. I think that saying Clemson has minus one rushing yard really doesn't do it justice. What you should say is Clemson has 72 yards of offense, latent of third quarter. Total. Which one is your favorite? 72. Which corner backs your favorite? Chris Vizina or Tate Reynolds? Well, Reynolds is four or five. He's not thrown a pick yet. He has taken two sacks and seven dropbacks, which is not super concerning. He also is Clemson's leading rusher if you strip out the sacks. And he entered the game at halftime. I don't show a few weeks ago.

Yeah, Christopher Vizina couldn't pull away from Tate Reynolds in their quarterback competition. Probably should have took that as a sign. Because we're not sure Tate Reynolds is actually good. No, he's a three star freshman who didn't play as a senior because he was injured. Yeah, correct. And LSU has just extended the lead. Okay. I think we just don't get to go down. If you've ever, you know, we're told that. Did LSU need the NFL players? Like, what are we doing this for? I strive not to be a wicked and foolish generation and chase after signs, but it sure seems like now would be a fine time in the wake of that touchdown that's going to make it 45. Yeah, 45 to three is what it'll be after this extra point. Unless Lane goes for two. I think they're going for two. Are they? They're going for two. They're hunting. They're. They let's throw a funnel on an extra point which would be tremendous troll behavior. Lane's going for two.

This is this is live right here. Lane's going for two. Three, 24 left in the third quarter up. 44 to three. Asshole. And they just burned the time out. I mean, you're not going to need them probably, but maybe maybe when they were walking in together, we'd be done asked if we could go for two. Ocean for the grand Lane. Kiffin. Yeah, that's. Could you imagine the cloud that's going to come out of this one? LSU is the is it is the fact that LSU is one. I'm sorry to interrupt you, Chip, because this was your kind of theory. Is Lane doing this because Dabo made him wait 90 minutes? Oh, maybe. Yeah. Okay, that's the case. I completely Lane. I'm sorry. I called you an asshole. Very fair. I agree with you here. Yeah. And and and the don't stay and stay out of my lane. You know, yeah.

All right, well then that gets to I would I think is the most interesting part of this. Is is this Dabo's last stand? Hard. Hard seven. I mean, they haven't been good in several years. No. They were ACC good as recently as two years ago. But so is Virginia last year and nobody thinks they're still a title contender. They were good to strong work. They they have not been like, you know, among the sports elite in several years. They've been good like yeah. Consistently anytime they've come up against the elite in the last three four years. This is what happens. Yeah, like what was it two years ago against Georgia? They lost 38 to three in the opener or something like that. Like Texas are gone. They're not in the roster anymore. Texas in the playoff game. We were excited because they played well for the third quarter and made it kind of close. You're running out top 20 high school recruiting with little to no supplementation from the portal.

And you're not really like hitting on your high school guys at the same rate that you used to. What was their last really good win? There are any Clems and fans in the chat or you guys bothering to watch this right now. Can you help us out? It was the last good win. They beat a Notre Dame team late in the season. I think 2023, 2022. They beat a ranked Louisville last year. They beat SMU in the ACC title game two years ago. 2023, they beat Notre Dame 31-23. Number 15 Notre Dame. Yeah. But hopefully. And that was a team that was dead. Like that was a team that was dead. That was a program win. A team that was dead. A season that was lost. They got up off the mat. They threw a big haymaker at Notre Dame. Notre Dame team did go 10-3. So I guess I didn't.

Yeah. So that team would be great. I think there's something different too. Also, we, while the Cover 3 podcast will gladly be your search firm and undercut all those other search firms out there, we are not the firing squad. Okay. That is a, that is a you decision. University president, athletic director, administration. Y'all decide what you want to stand for. You decide what your standard is. But a measuring stick game last year when it was just like kind of a low scoring, hard scrabble. Both teams were fighting for it and you lose to LSU at home. You walk out of that like, all right. And what dabbo even said both teams played their C++ game. And LSU and Clemson both ended up falling short of preseason expectations. So you could walk out of that and you could kind of pat yourself on the back and tell yourself that, hey, it wasn't that bad. There is nothing about Saturday night's performance in Death Valley, in Louisiana that has a

Clemson fan feeling like they are anywhere close to even an expanded college football playoff. 12, 16. I don't even know if this Clemson team makes a 24 team college football playoff. And if that is the reality that you're looking at, that is where the Clemson Tigers have to wonder whether or not they feel like this is going in the right direction. Yeah, you ask if this is Clemson's last stand or dabbo's last stand. I don't know, but this is probably the last time we're going to see Clemson in like a week one spotlight game for a while. Yeah, like you just wouldn't. Well, I mean, the last two times that they've been put in this like prime time Saturday week night spot on week one, they've lost by a billion. Yeah, I mean, I mean, minus well scheduled LSU vision. Wait, hold on, last year was tight. No, last year was a tight game, 1710, right? Yeah, yeah, true. I forgot about last year. Yeah, then the one before was a 330 kickoff against Georgia. That was the 30 to three Kade Club Nick deer in the headlights

right after the snap kind of stuff. Either way, I think that the networks are going to be trying to avoid Clemson in these spots in week one. You're going to be on an ACC network near the kick. All right, but before we do the, oh, nice block. Before we talk more LSU, let's play the clip and get out of the way. Chris, Christina, not being worth the damn is my three star. Haha. All right. Hey, set hold on. But say that one more time and everybody else could be quiet because that could be a banger. Chris, Christina, not being worth the damn is my cover three star lock. So let's go. Yeah, I mean, I didn't see any reason to think this guy was good at all. The recruits who start out high because there's just not that many guys that play that early and then they're ranking tanks like a vizina, like a jade and Davis, you know, those guys bust at like a crazy high rate. You know, if you don't keep progressing,

you're junior, you're senior high school, the track record is bad. And then it's usually too late for the school to dump you because the quarterback recruiting starts so early on, you know, it's tough. By the way, Jiren is limping now badly. Check out. Yes. That's 26 seconds left in the first half. He's limping around. He just, he just threw kind of a bomb. Did he get caught? Yes. Yeah, he's four or five on 20 plus yard throws tonight. And Cal has 10 points because they've seen obsessed with running the ball for some reason. What about LSU? It looked pretty damn good. I mean, they're playing a nobody from the ACC that all things considered. We saw other teams playing nobody's from smaller leagues and looked like crap today. So you have to be pretty impressed with what you're seeing from the LSU Tigers here. LSU looks like a national championship team.

Yeah. Like Sam Levitt. Sam Levitt's rushed for 113 yards unto all the carries. Like if we didn't have preseason rankings and we just just off what you saw this weekend, they're an easy number one. Yeah. Easy. It's 44 to three and a third quarter over a Clumston team that we agree is not elite now, but like they're not. That's a pulse. Yeah. Yeah. Like there's still some NFL guys on both sides of the ball for Clumston. Not as many as they used to have, but like they're this is not a contest. No, it's a bludgeoning. Yeah. Sam Levitt's day is done. Landon Clark. It's a shrimp boil. It's going to be played by the way. Landon Clark, who was at Elon. If you guys do stay up to watch this, if Lane let him let's him sling around, he has a cannon. Was that weird that Clark is in before Long Street? I think the former USC quarterback who committed Texas A&M, I think first out of as a five star

at a high school, do I have that right? Yeah. Yes, but I mean, I think Clark Scott's a real juice. Interesting. Like a LSU may have three quarterbacks who can play. Kelly and going quietly into that good night. I think Clark, I think Clark would start for Clumston. Maybe they should trade for him. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, that's the problem is if you get him, if you get him onto your campus and he doesn't develop, Davo doesn't run you off. Yeah, there's no positive attrition there. Right. Yeah. The speed of LSU's back seven was insane. Like Benafield running around, the backers looked fast as hell. Like Clumston could not get the edge all night. Like the first play of the game, they had like a four yard run. It looked okay. LSU kind of misfit it. And then everything to the edge, which is very Chad Morrissey and he was very good at it for quite a long time. And maybe he still is. I don't know.

Not tonight. They just, it was met like before it was at the line of scrimmage. Like they they gain almost nothing on that outside stuff. Clumston's got two stud receivers and they would get open some on the outside. But it wasn't like they were not really down the field stuff. It was more on like comebacks and whatnot. Okay. The safety's were crazy. Does Lane have the under? Is that why we're putting the backup in before the fourth quarter has started? Are we waving the white flag because we're not around it? We're not around it. 47. And we haven't quite got to where we need to get. Danny got it. 15 and a half. So that was where it was on Thursday. I'm guessing with the weather it might have come down a little bit. It probably got bad under slightly. Would you put LSU? All right. How about this? What do you think about killing Russell and Alabama? If we're going to start moving these pieces around because Alabama a big spotlight opportunity. What would we make of the Crimson tide in their new starter? Killing the good.

He looked good. I thought Bama actually looked a little bit sloppy offensively. Early. Yeah. Like some penalties or whatnot. The ECU lost a ton. I was a little bit concerned. I mean, it's hard to dump on what they win by it. It was, where's my notes? 48 to 10. Is that right? 48 to 10, yeah. Yeah. I mean, it's hard to dump on somebody for going 48 to 10. Right. Their success rate through like the first half was a little bit concerning to me. It was like, hey, we're going to kind of screw around. We're not going to look clean. Kieland's really, really good, I think. And it's going to be like awesome immediately. And the pocket presence is crazy. And he also like the scramble ability. Not only like, to scramble to run, but also scramble to throw is wild. And so he just, it's a little, I'm not comparing him to my homes. But you know how my home kind of runs around like crazy. And then he like finds somebody. And then he's got the arms used to get it there. They're like, he's a really good scramble to throw guy. I thought Ivan said great examples of this with the clips,

the tap pulled on the cover through recruiting show on Wednesday. He just has a real knack. And he's very accurate down the field. So like these scramble drills all of a sudden turn into home runs. You know, um, it was like, remember Jim Evans. Yep. Like a big time guest hit her almost. Like, oh, he's an O2 count. You think he's dead and all of a sudden like, oh, he's, he's sitting curbal. Okay. Right. I was going to bring up Jim Edmonds in the false hustle of diving for balls. He didn't have to die for. Thanks. Because man Jim Edmonds was a hall of favor at diving after he'd already made the catch. Except for maybe that one at the wall. Maybe the one time. Yeah. I just, I think like looking at it, he's going to keep them in a lot of games defensively. They look good. Like the secondary is very nice. The front had some young guys kind of step up and that, that look good. Offense just, it looked explosive but not like, cleaned to me. You know, like LSU tonight looked like they knew what the

hell they were doing. I'm pretty much every snap. So go ahead. It's also his first, first career college start. So maybe we should give the kids a grace. He was awesome. All right. You want to hear a story? Yeah. Do okay. Everyone's got opportunities, right? You know, and maybe you have been working your way through. You played linebacker at UT Martin, right? In the early 2000s. And you've been working your way up the ladder. Maybe you've been defensive coordinator at Memphis for the last little bit. And you've got this defense. You've got to take care of Keel and Russell. You've been doing a good job of kind of causing some problems. You know, Alabama's looking sloppy, right? You've been dropping into coverage. You've been trying to show Keel and Russell just a lot of arms and legs, right? And the offense is just a quarter touchdown. You're playing in Bryant, Danny Stadium.

And this thing right here, oh, baby, it's a 10 point game, right? 17 to 7. You got Keel and Russell on third and 11. And remember, you've been dropping everybody into coverage and just showing arms and legs. And boy, this is how I know. Because ECU defensive coordinator Jordan Jenkins is about our age. So that means he's going to understand this reference. He sat up there and the former UT Martin linebacker said, Leroy Jenkins. And after dropping eight in the coverage and showing the young quarterback, nothing but like arms and batting down things, he said, I'm a blitz six. And I'm just going to sit back and sure enough, Ryan Coleman Williams is like, oh, look at all of this open space in the defense when you blitz six. They had his ass on third and 11, down 10 early in the game, like vibes or juice and Alabama was panicking. And you just, I just saw my man up there.

They even put it on screen and Lewis Riddick's like, first time, first time, come plays here for the pirates. I'm sure he's going to wish he had that one back. You think you got him, but he's got you. Yeah, yeah, he says, I tell you what, we're about to heat his ass up, boys. I tell you, yes, that's what he said over the head. Boys were going, he does that. So up now, damn, 58 yards on the conversion. Man, tough scene. And I really actually caught it this time. And that was the thing is that got it going. And got him going. Hey, yeah, he finished with a good stat line. So a ugly drop surely in that game. I don't know what to make of Alabama. I think they're sealing in floor about as far apart. And again, how about this? I think Alabama will be a, there aren't no pictures on the scorecard kind of team this year.

You know, I think they will finish with the results. That might be appropriate, but the way that we get there is going to be a ride. They're not one of these pro golfers who's all about bogey avoidance. No, like they're shooting at pins. We're going to put up some big numbers. And we're going to have some Eagles. Is that Ludevig? Are they like Ludevig energy? Keelon shot 27 on the front. Yeah, yeah, what? Yeah, 59 watch finishes at 67 or something like that. Exactly. Be a 48 to 10. I guess, you know, your black hoodie for those who track such things for for Kaelin to pour. Good stuff. I've got people used to track that. Yeah. Bama Jordan's beef. Like good Jordan's beef. I would say more, I like Phil Mikkelson better. For Alabama. Yeah, there you go. Phil Mikkelson. Yeah, he more and more major.

I mean, when he was golfing. Yes. Yes. 100 per second. Like, maybe, maybe, maybe like, let's go ahead and draw some balance on the Kaelin to forward. Hold on. Hold on. Yeah. Kaelin to Boer's Alabama is Phil Mikkelson. It's a golfer. Mike Price is Alabama. He's Phil Mikkelson now. God bless you with that. Okay, but before we get into re-ranking and another piece, I want to make sure we hit is a celebration of UMass Minutemen and the other fun and frivolity from Thursday and Friday night. Let's just sort of throw this thing around, Tom. Where would you like to take our attention here on Saturdays Action? Go to Oklahoma State. A lot of a lot of hype coming into the year because, you know, they fired Mike Gundy.

They bring in Eric Morris. He brings with him Drew Mastemaker, tier one quarterback, according to the athletic. Damn. And I wrote in my anxiety rankings on Friday, I listed Oklahoma at number four because you're coming off of a terrible year and you're just kind of hoping that everything's going to be better. But what if it comes out and you lose again to Tulsa, just like you lost to Tulsa last year? What kind of you don't like? What does that do? And that's exactly what happened. Like, they came out and they scored 10 points. And Drew Mastemaker did not look particularly impressive. No part of the team really looked all that impressive. And you lost to a Tulsa team that was what, four and eight last year? Yeah. It's, I mean, it can only go up from here. But like an improving Tulsa team for sure. Like, they were one of the teams we thought could, if everything went right, when the American. You know, when we talk to somebody like this league is even more open than the SEC is.

But still, like nobody expected, I did not expect them to lose to Tulsa. They lose the left tackle really early in the game. He went off with an air cast and the legs like that. That's obviously a ding. But I thought their defense would be really probably suspect. You know, I don't know if I love their transfer class on defense. But offensively, that was shocking that they were not better than that. You're getting whipped up front. I don't think it's just the left tackle. Right. Yeah, exactly. I might copy and paste that as a two way adjustment. Yeah. That was that was a good. Tulsa joins the American picture with a very different, very different outlook. And then Oklahoma State. You know, like, I think I was more impressed with Baylor. I think I was more impressed with. I was more impressed with Colorado. Yeah. Not more impressed with West Virginia, but like marginally.

Uh, coastal got a quarterback, by the way. Like, coastal when they get to conference play. And they don't have just bodies all around a guy. Because it's a big 12 offensive line versus a, you know, kind of bottom tier sundale offensive line. He can do something. They have some nice receivers in that team. Like, that's going to be a fun watch. Did you see, um, did you see the rich ride handshake? Yes. No, I'm about to bring it up. Yeah. I, it is weird because in this, in this era, you see a coach going up to that kid like that. And you're like in five, six, seven, whatever, 10 years ago, you'd be like, that was a great game, son. You were fantastic. You know, if that was, you should be proud of yourself. Now you see it and you think and he's like, love to have you here in Morgantown. Oh, yeah. Just let me know if you ever, if you've got any interest, I think you fit really well in our offense. All right, great game. Then move out of the coach. He said, I don't want to see you anymore. Unless you're playing for. Yeah. Wing. Quink. Wing.

All right. So let's, let's really stress test this Oklahoma stator Cincinnati. Oh, man. I mean, the best thing since an ad he had going for it today, is what does the C stand for chip booty chicks? Exactly. I mean, they had touchdowns that they fumbled. They had first downs that they fumbled. You and believe the positive plays that they fumbled. That's an important win for Cincinnati. It's a very important way. I'm not sure how many more than I can. Yeah. Yeah, that was, that was, I was, I was following that because I had the under on the locks and it was just, I mentioned earlier, sometimes games hold you hostage. This one held me hostage. I was able to let go of Penn State and let that birdie fly free. It had all of its own wings earlier than I expected. My big note on the notepad here was, hey, remember when Kobe Howard couldn't see the field at Penn State? Why was that?

Because he looks pretty good right now. I don't know. But we've been waiting for Penn State wide receivers. And he'd been there. Oh, to be fair. Oh, well, quarterback. There's a quarterback that actually throws to wide receivers on the team now. He didn't have one before. So they just left him on the sideline because he's just been wasting his breath on the field. I thought that was obviously very strong showing and perhaps the one thing that Rocco looked good and the defense just didn't give a niche. Carlos Del Rio Wilson was named the offensive preseason player the year in the sun belt and couldn't get anything done at all. So. Yeah, that was that was sketch. Houston. Two things like they had bad turnover luck for sure. They also allowed like 400 something yards to Oregon state

and like couldn't get stops. And that was a little concerning. Six point game midway through the fourth quarter. I thought or my notes were that Houston played well but they could never put Oregon state away. And so the fact that they couldn't put Oregon state away is a monitoring to a situation. Because Oregon state with your mark of shepherd taking over was such a huge just kind of upheaval reboot that I just don't have anything. I know clue what to expect. So either Houston's not a top 25 team or Oregon state's going to make things interesting in the pack 12. Who's the greatest college football offensive all time? The greatest yeah 1916 army with three thumbs McGee and um all right never mind that. I'm not. Um I thought you would but I think the best offense is. I think highest scoring like total points is what 2019 LSU. High scoring per games 2013 four to state.

There's oh eight Oklahoma. No one has someone. Yeah yeah yeah they already said that you said it already. Do you know who had a game that was like 2019 LSU today? The first quarterback to throw for 450 yards and seven touchdowns or more with no intention. Oh Mason Hineshell Mason Hineshell. Mason Hineshell. 453 yards seven touchdowns no interceptions against Miami Ohio. Really good day. He played so well that Cal came out tonight and said I want to dress like pit. Seven touchdowns most touchdown passes in the game in ACC history. Uh most touchdown passes in a season opener tied with uh with Tanner Morki. Bailey Zappy drew lock and Tim couch in terms of most passing touchdowns in a season opener over the last 30 seasons in FBS history.

People tried to put them on upset alert. I I fell short you know. I had a hard time thinking like knowing how bad in our doozy just terrorizes bad quarterbacks and since Miami Ohio starter was out like is it back up really going to do anything to them? One got sideways. He's good. Yeah. We'll be a lot of fun. That makes pit a very loud dog in the ACC. Oh god yeah. Like our doozy with a lead. Wait. No no no you said he was saying makes pit a lot. He was saying makes pit a lot. I'm saying like they can pull some ups at to that they get out early. Yeah. And it's like you know you got because Miami is the clear favorite and everybody else is an underdog in that league. So we're looking for another team that'll step up and I you got Mason Heights. You'll pit is legitimate in the ACC. Yeah there. Coming up on the other side. What will the top 25 look like after the chaos in college football?

All that in more. Next. Back here on the cover three podcast and re-ranking the top 25 is sponsored all season long by Mo Delo. College football season is Mo Delo season. The fight songs. The fan quakes. The rivalry trophies are all better with an ice cold Mo Delo in your hand. It's not just game day. It's tradition and those who keep college traditions alive. You deserve a Mo Delo. Mo Delo is the official sponsor of the college football playoff. So with not all of the week one action but certainly plenty in the books we're taking a look to find out where the teams will be moving after the results. And as we mentioned earlier in the show there are teams that could be moving down even after a win among those teams are the Oregon ducks. So after 14 first place votes.

Propel them up to number two in the rankings. Tom, but my projection is that the ducks will fall in the rankings. But I'll cap it at like four or five. No more than two or three spots here. I mean my initial reaction is that seems like a dramatic response. We usually don't see that when teams win. But there was so much like compact between those top seven that I do think there's a legitimate argument to be made that yeah that's very possible because Ohio State blew out you know fall state. Georgia blew out whoever they beat in the like six. I can't remember who they played at this point. Notre Dame we have to wait and see. Texas looked really good. Indiana we talked earlier in the show was not outstanding but they still won comfortably in Miami just absolutely whipped. Stanford on Friday nights. So yeah no I wouldn't be shocked at all if Oregon drops a spot or two. I think that's a good call.

But fair. Yeah I mean look I usually defer to chip on this. I do think the fact that there were like seven teams like so tightly clustered. We also we got to see what Notre Dame looks like against Wisconsin tomorrow night. Right. Georgia and Texas neither of them getting first place votes was such a storyline and these rankings were released almost a month ago. I wondered if AP voters the 14 of them who had Oregon number one. I'm sure a couple of them will remain steadfast and say hey they're win. I'm not going to bump them from the number one spot but if you had any idea of a debate in your mind. I just don't know if there's any way you look at those top seven teams and say that is still the one that I believe is the number one team in the country. The loss of those first place votes plus people who might have had them too that drop them to three or three and then drop them to four. I think that's where you start to get that churn again. I'll put a cap on how far they fall because they did win the game but Georgia didn't get any first place votes. Texas didn't get any first place votes. Both of those SEC teams were dominant in victory so I do think that Oregon will be moving down.

How about this next projection but I would not be surprised again judging by the very small margins between teams. If we see number 13 Alabama end up maybe as high as 11 maybe knocking on the door right there behind Oklahoma just off the backs of this. If you looked at the way that Alabama was viewed and the way that Alabama was considered they had questions about quarterback they had questions about the run game they had a lot of questions seems like they were answered in this win at least to it from a voters perspective certainly. So I could see Alabama maybe jumping ahead Ole Miss still has to play so that would change the ordering and we made no to that as such but do you think that Crimson Tide did enough to be able to answer some of the doubters? I think they should be like just based off one game right should be ahead of Texas tech and tech saying that for sure right like those two teams did not look amazing at all against bad competition. So yeah I think that's fair that range is fascinating like is

I don't want to jump ahead of you on questions do you have an LSU question? Where does LSU land? Yeah like do they do they crack the top seven? No because like Miami's offense looked awesome. They're I would say they're pass rush given how many offensive lineman Stanford head out was a little bit disappointing to me. Nine o'clock kickoff on a Friday night to an AP voter that five scored. Yeah man everything you needed. I was looking for more from Wilson the big transfer they got from Missouri man like I that's kind of that big like the huge question about that team is you know how do you replace the pass rush? They had some guys look good but like I thought they were going to look better given the personnel that Stanford did not have in the ballgame but they probably didn't do enough to look like to drop. Is LSU go to eight? I think LSU is I think LSU is threatening the eight nine spot and we've got to get an omit we still have Ole Miss left play at nine which is going to be sort of

like a big you know a big way that that could change. Yeah I was going to say if Ole Miss loses they're definitely jumping in it's just it's a question of how far they will because I don't think Oklahoma is going to get punished much good for dominating you tap but I don't think Texas A&M will get punished much but if Ole Miss loses definitely but I do believe that just based on this being the big game of the weekend or at least on Saturday with a lot of people washing it. LSU is it's going to be in the top 10 it's the question of who will they pass to get there. I mean the real shame here is all the media members that don't get to make their dinner reservations tonight in Baton Rouge you know. Drake a Madello for them tonight you know. This Madello is for all the AP voters so I'm always very very kind to you guys know that whether it's in this segment or if it's on Monday when we're going over the AP poll but I will say I mentioned it earlier in the show. I think AP voters should rank Western Michigan. This is some

message. Get that hashtag going out there rank Western Michigan contact your local AP voter find Ralph Russo and herang him until he agrees to vote Western Michigan on his ballot in place of Michigan wherever you were going to put Michigan on your ballot put Western Michigan that is my plea to any AP voter listening to this show. That would be you know normally for Tom's enemy my friend Ralph Russo I would try to take his back no but you should actually go and find him and I applied the pressure. Do you want you should I give out his phone number or listeners can text him and tell him to rank Western Michigan. No okay I don't condone I don't condone doxing or harassment in general but in this like very small case I think I can do just tweet at him you know it'll be good for his algorithm anyway I'm sure we're helping him along

the way. I don't know if he's getting those Elon checks we'll see last piece speaking of where does Michigan fall. Michigan they cannot be 16. I would anticipate they'll probably still be ranked but I would guess they're going to be more in the 20s. Yeah. There's enough voters that basically like they just yeah up down slide yeah yeah although hey you know what there might be some AP voters who thought they lost. I'd turn the game off thought it was over who knows. I've officially I mean but the story that's going up tonight on CBS Sports.com is more of a general projection because we can't nail in mean still with the likes of Washington and also Ole Miss and also Louisville and also Notre Dame and also SMU still left to go we can't nail in exact spots but in in my blurb I mentioned look for that Penn State range you know voters might use Penn State as a nice okay I

don't really think you're in that USC category which by the way USC is two and no and has done nothing but look good. And they looked much better against Fresno than they did and in fact that was you know if we look at what Boise was doing today against Oregon compared to what Fresno looked like last night against USC I think I think there's a clear cut favorite emerging in the Paxwell based off of that. Len and Clark now has more passing yards than either of the Clemson quarterbacks. Oh we're up to 53 Danny loses under. If you were awake you'd be sad. Congrats Moose you did it. It's incredible. Of course we will be ranking more specifically once we've got full weekends here on the re ranking the segment tomorrow's top 25 today and that was re ranking the top 25 sponsored by Madelo while the rankings may change from week to week Madelo will always be at the

top of our list as the perfect companion to any college football Saturday remember college football season is Mo Delo season. All right let's phase on Brandon who got eyes on phase on Brandon. Yeah I just got highlights too that one's on the DVR I didn't get to watch it in real time. Phase on fact, Hoyt. Let's go. There's a there's a segment we can have every week. Through for three touchdowns ran for two last SEC quarterback to do that in their first start. Johnny Manzo, Deck Press got no team team up. No. Cam Newton 2010. Who season ended pretty well for him. That's a good pull. Malik Itoni had 12 catches for 234 yards and three touchdowns. Dude. What if Andrew Lux and I all plan was to place up a bunch of money and Darian Mensa and Malik

Itoni to win. And they just played man all night because of it. What if that was secret genius move by Andrew. Sounds like it sounds like Chip Kelly being stunned that Oregon went one on one with Jeremiah Smith and the Rose Bowl. Yeah. How'd you do that? Yeah I could at least understand Oregon thinking it can. I don't understand why Stanford thought it good. I think they were just like we're going to get killed anyway. We're just going to play our defense. Right. Like we played a ton of man on Hawaii last week and we're also still doing that here against Miami. Yeah. That was that was not competitive. Oh, 90% completion percentage 400 plus passing yards and five plus passing touchdowns in a game over the last five seasons. Darian Mensa, your company is Dylan Gabriel, CJ Stroud and Matt Carral. That'll work. That will work. How many teams will Miami do this too?

Um, a lot schedule. Yeah. Because this is the other thing is this game was over fast. Will Miami win five conference games by 21 plus they will do it. Yeah. For the A&M. They'll probably do it at wake. They'll do it to central. I think this is what I've watched tonight. They're going to do it to Clemson. I mean, I was going to say like not to go super knuckle draggy on this, but I kind of think that there's something to be taken from Miami not showing up and tripping all over its feet and show and being said, no, this is a, there's a different team. We're not going to just go out to California and try and trip all over ourselves as we don't understand who we are and what we're trying to do. Business trip. They treated it as such. It's good work. Didn't that wait for a while? I don't need to see Georgia play Tennessee state ever again, by the way. I mean, that that's that's kind of embarrassing. I'm not trying to rag on

Georgia here, but like if you're a Georgia fan, you showed up for that like in like the 170 degree heat dude, they're like that's like a legitimately bad FCS team. What like the safety issue joke I'm going to say about Jamie you is like legitimately applicable here. Okay, so not a joke. So Jeff Brahm made it seem like the reason they got a little miss was because Georgia backed out and that must be why Georgia ends up with this. That makes sense. Georgia did cover by the way. Yeah, how about them? And they slowed it down like crazy, but that's that said that they never cover. Did what did you guys think of the Rutgers fireworks show? Oh boy. Did you happen to notice? And I've got a shout out Nate Tyson on this one. Did you see this? You haven't said it yet. Someone someone might be at 99 wins at Rutgers. So you might have gone extra heavy on the

fireworks show. Oh, thinking that it was going to be 100 win one number 100. Oh, no. Oh, Shion, no. You got a hundred win fireworks show. And instead, we're shooting it off after the humus win. That's tough. I mean, it was already tough. Shout out to Nate. I know he likes the show. I appreciate it. Shout out to the UMass. We only needed 60 minutes men for getting out of home, but like pop watch it. Bringing back zoom ass. Yeah, people like zoom ass slam her. I mean, we're turning UMass into a party school again. Let's call out anybody's credentials. But like everybody's like, who's this pop Watson guy? It's like he started it like Nebraska. He was at Virginia Tech. You should you should have heard of him by now. Like that should not have been the

first time you heard his name. But like if you're if you're Rutgers, what do you do after that? Like you you're not going to fire him after the first game of the season, right? But it's the seventh season in the second stint. Things have clearly plateaued and that's being as nice as I possibly can be. And then you're losing to the UMass team that went on 12 or whatever last year and was like seven and 35 in the last five years just Clemson scored a touchdown shootoff fireworks. No, but Scott is team total. Yeah, this is not good. I don't know if that's it. Wait, is it 30 minutes left in the game? No, yeah. Oh, yeah, you're 20 and a half. You're fine. Yeah. I was just talking about just simply, there's an empty tiger stadium. The football game is still technically happening. All of you Laura were literally interviewing like a cheerleader. A cheerleader because he did too many pushups. The game had hit the point that they took

they were like, Hey, Laura, come on back from the Clemson sideline. We don't need you over there anymore. We want you to come interview the cheerleader that just did 51 pushups. Will we get a social media clip of Laura running over there? Maybe. I don't know. Um, will you? Would you take, would you rather be Clemson or Rutgers right now? Jesus Christ, I'd rather be Clemson chip. Come on. You sent me up to be in trouble. Why not go to I'm not no, I don't hate Clemson that much. Wow, would you rather be Clemson or Rutgers right now? Right now. Rutgers was the better team on the field. It was like there was nothing fluky about it. Like they beat their ass. You mean um, you mass was the better team. Yes, better than Rutgers. Like it was. That hasn't happened often. Like in a history of our sport where like a four touchdown dog goes out and just dominates somebody. I mean, it was evident early. Like it's the one thing you see

like in the first game of the year, first drive of the year, like you mass drives down the field scores. You're like, okay, like then Rutgers drives down the field scores. Then Rutgers goes three and out, punts and UMass goes right back down the field and scores. And it was at that moment, I was like, Oh, shit, this might be a thing. Yeah, if you had like computer vision analyzing that game, like it would have highlighted this putter like Rutgers is not getting surge at the line of scrimmage and like they're allowing separation and it's this is not just like a Hey, UMass is doing some different stuff. It'll it'll settle in and it'll take a quarter. It's like shoot. Like after a certain point, you're not on the script anymore. Like you're kind of seeing what these guys run and you don't have answers for it. Yeah, the firework show reminds me of the the between third and fourth quarter height video that they played at Carolina TCU last year, game one of the billbellicic era where they had like a $50,000 light show. And it was one of

those things that all the fans were given something that was supposed to participate in it, but all the fans had left. So you know, it didn't it was a little disjointed and they finally shot it off. But I guess if you spend all the money on the theatrics, might as well still, like I just imagined that there was no good another chance to use them. So you might as well blow them off. I mean, I feel like that there was some pyrotechnic expert who was just you don't know anything about the football game. He was waiting for someone to tell him go. Oh, that's it. I was using army 1916 names for any four fingers or pyrotechnic sex. He's so much to let him fire. Chip, would you rather be Rutgers or UMass? Would I rather be Rutgers today? Yeah, UMass. For the rest of time. I don't know. I've learned a lot about zoom ass slamherst in the last three days. I don't realize the kind of reputation they had back in the day. You know, I think I think I'm in. We have the big 10 statement, by the way, not on Rutgers

debacle, but on the thing. Yeah, on mission. Let's go. You want to read it? You want me to read it? I got you. Oh, God. All right. Statement from the big 10. Oh, here we go. Following video review, it was determined Western Michigan's number 18 started his jump from an established out of bounds position, parentheses left foot, and made contact with the ball with one second remaining on the clock as shown in the provided video of what was viewed during the replay process. A side by side view of the play and the game clock using a direct shot of the game clock in the stadium was used to determine the final ruling 85 minutes prior to the game. All broadcast cameras used for the replay including the camera on the game clock are synced using a strobe system to ensure all cameras are aligned per NCAA rule four dash two dash three dash a quote a ball not in player control other

than a kick that scores a field goal is out of bounds when it touches the ground a player a game official or anything else that is out of bound or is on or outside the boundary line and thus the clock is stopped. Okay. So apparently the Michigan attorneys were aware of this unique so. Wrinkle which I think is the Miami Virginia Tech from two years ago. Yeah. So yeah. Okay. From a friend explaining this who I I think would know. But I don't know. But this like if they didn't rig it right then this is basically how it works. They have like an accurate decimal system whereas the TV clock is just showing like full seconds right if there's any time remaining on the decimal thing it's a second right if you actually go and you you look at it with. Oh it doesn't round up round down when we're talking about the clock well like the TV clock doesn't

right so pretty clearly it's under nine seconds if you decimal it out the issue on the stadium clock is no decimals goes from nine to eight instantly on hike right when it hits eight it's 8.99 instant it hits zero it's zero point nine nine. Two one so what he's saying is right now there's you know like 0.09 like 60 milliseconds left essentially right big Miami Virginia Tech energy this would be really helpful if the big 10 had the review like on camera crew that a lot of these other leagues have now. I don't know I still think it's they're going to have it on Friday nights for some reason they didn't have it available tonight. It probably is a big lift to make it ever like do they do central central replay for big 10 or is it on site? Yeah no it's central okay they've got the nice little replay center in Rosemond at the office. I think that West

I think Western Michigan has every right to be very upset. Yes I think it was a gate in ending that did not represent the game whatsoever and while I don't ask forever I don't ever ever ask for college football to be perfect as a fan I can watch that game and watch that ending and they I was kind of crappy that's kind of that's how I'll be close in the book on that one. In addition to the large set of things that I'm carrying forward with Michigan and look Western Michigan ain't nothing to f with you know it'll be a different it'll be a different world obviously you get into the heart of Mac play in action. There's good mission Western Michigan you they have a not conference game against. Poison State. If they'd won tonight then they'd have gone

and beaten Poison State then they'd have won the Mac. Guess what they would have had a legitimate argument for. But you know what also Lance Taylor might enjoy life in the triangle you know it's beautiful around here I could offer you. I might have multiple ACC jobs for you Lance but I'm on the list. You know yeah another top performer today Nate Shepherd who goes for 227 for do for do Cali. Let's keep it in the triangle. There are five carries against two lane. This is one of the worst quarterback games I've ever watched like combined. Walker you get 13 of 26 for a buck 31 a lot of just passes that were nowhere close to anybody. Samanza for two lane they put in after they benched Zion Chris. See on Chris six of nine for 64. See that that Nate Shepherd line terrifies me because after watching Illinois run defense against

UAB on Thursday night you don't really want to see Nate Shepherd. Oh he's going for 50 Tom not Yarks. Carries. Yeah yeah yeah yeah he's ready to do it. I like Nate I like I mean I think Nate's a super impressive player like he's a yeah that is the lead that's one of the leaders of that team right now he is more than happy he gets his number called to be able to go out there and answer it so ready the cold tub. Yeah yes for sure. Is it a sophomore? He's a young guy right now. Yeah kid he can use. He's good. No they'll just throw him out there. I hope he can go. He's two inches shorter by the time the season ends. By the way, Hoss Haney tonight for Colorado State. Uh huh. He's good. Like I don't why on these defense not very good but like Colorado State's got one that they're going to be really fun to watch. The Oklahoma State former quarterback the fan bases watching their former quarterbacks play

well in other places. It was a fun aspect of the new college football world that we have. So as Oklahoma State is losing to Tulsa Oklahoma State fans are also watching Hoss Haney you know win or did you realize that there were like four Dave Klaus and recruited quarterbacks who started games this weekend. You know if you reach all the way to a Mitch Griffiths you know to all the others a lot a lot of old wake quarterbacks out here in the streets right now. A lot a lot of fan bases watching their former QBs go out there. Geolopez you know things that that nature. Uh how about Jane Maiva. You know we mentioned it earlier but it was a Friday night game. 39 to zero. 23 for 25 for 349 yards and three touchdowns. You get a pair of freshmen receivers both going for more than 100 with Trent Mosley and Caden Dixon Wyatt. The first freshman duo with a hundred plus receiving yards each in a game in the last six seasons.

Uh we didn't have to question the culture of the backups. I don't know if you're familiar but sometimes I always am concerned when the third stringers let in the touchdowns. Maybe an indication of culture. Oh nothing better than being able to clean that up. Come in and pitch pitch pitch a shut out 39 to nothing. I two games USC's done USC's done a lot outside of the garbage time period. Yeah. I don't have a lot to complain about through eight quarters of USC football. I'll go ahead. No go. I also feel slightly better about their like even though they're up 35 to three against San Jose. San Jose did have like two successful drives just kind of ended like like ended fairly deep in USC territory. San Jose offense like weaver is a pretty good player. You know for that level like that's that's going to happen occasionally I guess like they were so

physical on Thursday night like that was or whatever night that was like that was wild man like that they they just overwhelmed what I think is a pretty decent Fresno team. You know and that was I was like Kate and Dixon Wyatt obviously mostly goes over 100 again. I would just they're good. Uh Hank Brown may have won the Iowa job. Oh what did the score end up being there? I guess Northern Illinois. Boarding enough and he looked much better. Yeah they looked much better than I mean yeah they ran all over like Murray Bolton had 183 yards and 11 carries but uh better get ready for a world in which Iowa has a wide receiver. Mm hmm. A roll us do. Yeah. Oh yes. Yep. Seven catches 84 yards touchdown. Little little water bug jittery slot type. Haven't seen Iowa with a do like that in a while. Um archbanging archbanging archbanging archbanging archbanging the Texas Longhorns. We've not gotten a chance to react to their 59 to 7 win against Texas state.

I mean we had a Wingo. We had a Cam Coleman. This was a this was a highlights game for me mostly a key plays game for me mostly. I wasn't watching it in the flow of the game. Any strong takeaways right now for me the one. No I a couple like watching this live. I wanted to see like how the defense was going to play like they they played like they were angry and that was maybe that's the most champ thing shining through like the offensive line was was pretty physical like it they they look good. I mean they they have so much skill like they can just kind of do whatever and still look good. Do you listen bye bye bye bye uh bye we have bye bye oh he had to pee again. We good yeah there he is. All right cool. Did my did my voice come through or just no use with a total frozen. You froze. I said I like the mentality Texas played with like it was like

like they were angry like they like they were out to prove something. Can I can I recall something that you may have seen during either fall camp or this week of practice. I think it was fall camp actually because there's about two weeks ago. Colin Simmons was talking about how he feels like he's really improved his run defense and a reporter asked a good follow up question that said was well how do you think that's happened and Colin Simmons says and I'm going to edit this he said I think I just stopped giving a duck except he didn't say duck and he said it to the reporter and I think that's actually run defense you know you just kind of have to stop giving a duck and like if you've got a whole team of five star athletes that felt like maybe they were given too many ducks and now they're going to stop giving ducks and they're just going to charge in there and play angry and play nasty that's kind of how you do the the last little piece of being able to turn the switch and turn a very talented roster into one that can piece for championships.

So machine Biles great addition thought he was very very good as well it'll be a lot of fun to watch Texas certainly a piece of the national championship conversation at every single turn. I got Miami Texas A&M didn't watch it I can't tell you anything about it. You see weird amount because it kind of got on the one of the quad casts. I was going to say you texted it was that well no I don't want to take your I don't want to stomp on your take but final score to match up with the observation but I think I'm with you because it was still not there yet and then it just kind of looked like it was maybe some style points late. Yeah like offensive line didn't look all together now granted first came out new group we kind of too early to tell but like they didn't look you know very yet for sure. Did anybody watch Texas Tech because I didn't get eyes on that one. I added it when it was I saw a mistackle lead do a Texas Tech touchdown and then

Evelyn Christian scored their first touchdown in the game like that like 26 to 3 33 to 10 kind of area but I didn't I didn't feel like I was ready to grade Wilham and yet I need to get a full full look on it and it is Evelyn Christian too. Gotcha. The one text Danny sent about it was not encouraging. That's what I was thinking. Yeah. All right we got I did not get to see Utah Utah Idaho. No need to watch that. Nebraska is speaking of things that weren't encouraging they got their act together but the big 10 just struggle. I mean again like we talked earlier outside of the teams at the top of the league not including Oregon the big 10 just did not have the most impressive weekend. I mean Northwestern struggled with South Dakota state just yeah. Colorado Georgia Tech yeah. That's that's depressing if you're a Georgia Tech fan on so many levels.

You're like damn like we needed that game to go to a bowl. No you're like damn we had that game and we blew it so many times. I mean is the late clock management issue a weird reversal of the Miami game the kneeling like they were the benefactor of Mario Cristobal not kneeling and then the clock management was so horrendous and the decision-making didn't work either. I mean all of it compounded. Colorado just running the ball down there throw yeah like Colorado was pretty clear couldn't throw and tech still couldn't do anything about Colorado running the ball or Georgia Tech couldn't run the ball against Colorado's defensive front. Okay I don't think this is the case but a lot of people on Twitter were like was Brent Key you know just a Haynes King Buster Falken Merchant. Time will tell yeah. There were a meaner comments made along those same lines but

oh we're a family show chip. I don't know we don't make we support. James Franklin doesn't support their troops just it just absolutely absolutely just disrespectful to the military institute. He was like what the F's a key debt get out of here. 73 to 3 against Virginia military institute. It could have been 100 I would argue they did respect the troops because they could have put up 100 in that game. I saw him yelling at a ref in the fourth quarter. Frank Beamer couldn't believe what you did out there. You got a standard. 66 to 21. For the Florida Gators. I stopped watching that one probably their mid second quarter was pretty obvious to me. What was going to go on there? They look like crazy exposed to an offense. You know the Faulkner could play calling. Filo operates it just fine. Kind of don't think that was a competition

at quarterback but it could be wrong. My big headline here is Jaden Baugh. Like not only was he productive with the numbers 160 yards and three touchdowns but the runs themselves were the heavens to bits of the boy can scoot. I mean he's just like the stop the start the explosion. I mean it's just it's all there just because you've got the talent just because you did it on tape once. Doesn't mean it's always going to show up. That boy is he's ready for week one. I mean he's ready to go. So that's so exciting. Yes Tom. We have statement from the Mac. Oh my goodness. They're suing. They're suing. They're suing. No. No. This is this is the Midwest for you. Official statement from Mid American Conference Commissioner Dr. John Steinbrecker upon the conclusion of the Western Michigan football game. The Mid American conference in Western Michigan contacted the Big Ten office to seek clarification regarding the replay review and the placement of time back on the game clock. The Big Ten explained that the ball touched a player who was out of bounds before the clock reached zero resulting in one additional play being awarded. The Big Ten

subsequently provided video in audio of the replay which confirmed the explanation provided to us. I commend Western Michigan for an outstanding effort and a well played game and I offer my congratulations to Michigan. I also appreciate the collaborative efforts of the Big Ten office and its proper response in reviewing the play and providing the requested clarification. So they're letting it go. Our signetti did say in the Midwest we don't win. We don't complain. We take the results and we deal with them. Check ourselves up by our bootstraps and we get back to work on the far. It's just I know you got that big ass check from Michigan for playing the game. You really deserve the win. The 1.5 mil or whatever it is. Man. I mean I guess you'll have the Lance Taylor buyout check right? Don't do it. Don't do it. Don't do that to them now. Come on man. They haven't had

a bad enough night. Ships like yeah that's too bad. Mind if I steal your pouch. I mean well I'll take them and we got some construction down the road. I'm sure they'll take them in West Rally. No, that can be anywhere. Okay. Anything. Everybody needs a coach Taylor and their wife. Everything. Absolutely. And a missus coach. And a missus Taylor. Collins Simmons, Bear Alexander, Mason Heintzschull, Jordan Hankins, Martian Becker, Oh, USF. Man. 10 of 17 for 91 through the air against FIU. Tied in Berkeley by the way. Yeah. USF's defense. Awesome. Okay. Like they suck out loud on offense but man that defense can go.

Is that just athletes just like who they were able to get based on being South Florida? I don't know who their DC is but like they they looked really well coached. Like those guys play hard. They're like relentless. They they definitely have some dudes as well. But like I can't imagine what their practice like looks like. Oh, because the offense. When they go good on good that that that's a horror movie. I thought they were. Ornator is Josh Haldrich. Like I think FIU's offense to me is considerably better than USF's offense. Like watching them play. How did FIU? I did not get any eyes on this one yet. Obviously it was very interested in it. Big love. Willie Simmons thought it was an interesting spot, especially with Brian Hartline being in game one was FIU able to move the ball on the ground. They they didn't score very clue. Like I was score tracking this but I didn't watch it. They scored at the end. I know to cover her. So they had they had three turnovers which really created most of USF's offense. Yeah. They I thought Cole for FIU like we'll monitor this when it when it comes

time for conference play but he actually can make like the wide like the wide side of the field throw and you know it's minute what we're almost two hours here. We're talking FIU quarterback come conference play. Sorry guys. But man USF was contesting like almost every throw like I think USF I think I but you used to be fine come conference play. I think any other shows going two hours and talking about FIU right now. What did you say? Do you think any other shows that two hours talking about FIU? We don't talk to G6 Tom. So I'm just saying I don't think any other shows out there talking FIU two hours. They've been talking about Lane Kiffin for 45 minutes. Yeah. Tom saying. At this point I'm really just doing this show for us. At this point we really are just dumping our notebooks for each other. You know like one hour for 157. I truly respect the thoughts and opinions and I enjoy hearing what Tom Fonelli and Bud Elliott have to say about

the day that was because we just all took it like a fire hose. We did the best we could. We watched what we wanted or what we needed to or some combination of the both and because college football is crazy like that we're not able to get to everything and some things are going to be watched on Sunday and some things might even be watched Monday morning before a pun further review. But yeah at this at this point if the tailgate has one game that they want us to hit I tell day ones know I got a game for you shout out us in the tailgate and we've got comments on it. We thought it then we'll talk about it. Might be interested in this game staying under 55 and a half but Mississippi Valley State is the by game for Sacramento State and Sac State's quarterbacks out. The backup had no problems with this. The Valley State by the way 18 of 28247 the starter for Mississippi Valley State University. He was six of 13 for you want to guess how many yards 13 yards. Tom Hill 13 yards on the nose. Let's go. Did you really just pull that?

Yes. Dude yeah six. You think where's that trophy? Oh, but here's a problem if Mississippi Valley State you think they just give me now. Bro. If Mississippi Valley State does beat Sacramento State it would be yet another while while UMass was able to bring such glory to the Mac and Western Michigan tried. Oling Green did lose to Charlton State today. Yeah. Yeah. The Charlton should have been favored. Yeah. Like they were two and a half point dogs but they lost last week right? Yeah. They were just saying back in. Yeah it was it was on the sprinkle card. It was number three. I didn't put it on there but it was very much in consideration and I was upset that I didn't say anything. Speaking of Lane like I would be interested in pressurized. Did you say anything crazy?

I don't know. I don't know. Chet it's it's 114 a.m. on the East Coast Chets kind of while in they were saying some things about his post game comments. I don't think it's appropriate. I need to see it with my own eyes. I don't believe they're translation. North Dakota State is going to shock you. Just absolutely had a team in the figure four four quarters 38 to zero. App State had app state had more points in their winning its main than Michigan had second half yards at one point. I was kind of sitting on that one until the final game winning play. Speaking of week one memories of old. So are we going to Jared Curtis? Oh because things were so shaky early. Burlew it wasn't terrible. But Curtis had some cool highlight runs made one really nice pass. Well, Monk situation I guess. What was the order? So Blaze finishes

11 for 16. Jared 7 for 9. Interesting. Oh, Kamario Taylor looked awesome. Yeah. That's good. Yeah, I mean, I would expect it with that kind of offense against, you know, but still like he looked good, which is really important for Mississippi State. In IU might be the worst team in the country, outside of like Sac State, but even then I'm not really sure. Bulling Green might be that conversation too. As a worst FPS. Yeah. Memphis was able to back it up, but it was a dicey early. I don't know what to make of that, but 42 24 is our final. We'll go back and review the tape on that one. I watched most of this. What's this? What's his name? Jaylen Rainer. You always ask about Jaylen Rainer. No, no, no, no. No, Rainer's somewhere else now. He's not a runner. I was right. I was right. I was state. I didn't see I was state today either. Yeah. They got it together. They look bad early, but they got it together.

Shoot. Is it tray brown? Somebody's going to try Oh, and Trey Oh, and excuse me. Yes. He's pretty good at Arkansas. Like no, I'm serious. I'm like, I have four interceptions. But, but he was scooting. He made a lot of really impressive passes to me. Like, nobody else in that league is going to brush the password like that. And USF will put some pressure on him, but like, you know, well, they're in the sunbelt anyway. So they won't face USF. Excuse me. It's almost 2am. I thought he was good. Like he made he made some nice plays early. Memphis was sloppy early. Right. This is going to shock you, but Memphis inevitably hit a bunch of explosive plays and then got a bunch of sacks and pressures and turnovers. What was the baseball player that you all call Memphis's offense? Adam Dunn? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. It is very adam. Like, Stokes at one point, luckily he was so down and so sacked that he couldn't get the ball up, but he was like trying to throw the ball like as he's basically horizontal, like in the middle of the

pocket. I'm sorry. I was told to chuck it. Doesn't matter whether I'm upright, sideways, laying down, I was told to chuck it. Yeah. I know it's crazy to say that four picks look good. I think that's what I think. But given the circumstances and given that it's Arkansas state, I was kind of impressed. Louisiana Tech put an 80 burger on the board. Dish or wonder if sunny Cumbi knows about the off switch. I think Danny got got Danny got eyes on that one. Probably on sunny Cumbi. Yeah. Yeah. He's got that one covered for a pun for the review. Our friend Robbie Calland was on site for Maryland 62, nothing winning his hampton. We'll get his report. I'm sure certainly in just a little bit. I do remember his one note is that denim mini skirts are back. I'm not going to get a patrol confirming or deny that. Sac State punted. Let's go. All right. We, the great thing about this is not only everybody in

the tailgate who's continued to hang around rocking and rolling. It is the fact that we continue this conversation. It doesn't stop now. So Saturday nights, as you've just heard, we crack our skulls open. We pour out every single thing that we've seen taken thought, heard, whispered, texted, otherwise. But then we get to pull it all together. We get to watch some of what we didn't get to see. We get to follow up on the press conferences, the press clippings, and some of the insider information that we're able to gather. Then on Monday, we come back with a pun further review. Now, because it is a Labor Day Monday, we're going to try to accommodate your plans and hours. We're going to bump up about one hour, 10 a.m. Eastern time for a pun further review this Monday. Then after that, a very busy Tuesday, as we go from week one to end of week two, where we will get a chance to react to the Monday night game. Of course, Monday will react to Sunday and also look at the new AP Top 25 after the show and so much more big game breakdown. That's right. We're going to be simultaneously in the same day.

We're wrapping up week one and previewing week two. We put it in. We hold your hand so that you don't have to worry about getting dizzy through all of the craziness that is the opening of college football season. If you're watching a long live, we do really appreciate it. It feels so, so good to be back. Rayman, you're right there. Dan, thank you so much to you as well. Thank you SDF87 and so much more Nick, UGA, you had a good day and yeah, drop your triple zeros. Everybody, if you stay in with Western Michigan, drop that zeroes on the clock. We are back in deed. Before you get the act, hit the like. Yeah, and hit the like before you hit the exit. That's a good one tagline. Let's go. And you can follow him on Twitter at time for now. You can follow him at play. You can follow me at Chip underscore Patterson. Gentlemen, thank you very much. Actually, there's one second left.
