WHA's Bold Rivalry: NHL's Growth Spurt

In the early 1970s, the NHL was thriving after decades with just its original six teams,

but fans and new cities wanted in.

That sparked the World Hockey Association, or WHO, which launched in 1972 as a bold rival.

To grab attention, it signed 67 NHL stars, like goalie Jerry Chievers, Bernie Parent,

and Bobby Hull, who inked a massive 10 year 2.

The league kicked off with 12 teams split into Eastern and Western divisions.

beating the Jets in five games for the AFCO Cup, only title before joining the NHL later.

Trouble brewed fast as the WHO added teams too quickly, leading to bankruptcy and players

bolting back to the NHL.

By the late 1970s, financial woes hit hard, even with young stars like Wayne Gretzky and

Mark Messier shining for Edmonton.

In 1979, the league folded, but four survivors merged into the NHL, Edmonton Oilers, Quebec

Nordiques, Hartford Whalers, and Winnipeg Jets.

Those clubs evolved into powerhouses, like today's Oilers dynasty, Colorado Avalanche

Cup winners, Carolina Hurricanes Champs, and Arizona Coyotes, proving the WHO forced

hockey's big growth spurt.
