Ask ChatGPT the same question on Tuesday and again on Friday and you will probably get two different answers, with two different sets of sources. That is the uncomfortable finding Jay Schwedelson digs into here, using fresh data on how violently AI citations churn from one day to the next, plus the weekly routine that keeps your brand tracking honest instead of comforting. There is also a Mountain Dew body wash situation that nobody was prepared for.

Best Moments:

(00:31) Why 69% of AI sources shift from one day to the next

(01:02) Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations collapsed 86% in about a month

(02:54) Half of everything AI engines cite is less than thirteen weeks old

(03:45) Pick the 10 questions that actually influence someone buying from you

(04:04) The incognito browser step most people skip, and why it ruins the data

(05:22) The two prompt lines that stop AI from flattering your brand

(06:27) Mountain Dew body wash at Walmart, and the obvious follow-up question

Welcome to do this not that the podcast from marketers we share quick tips things you can do right now and then we add a little bit of chaos at the end of every episode we also keep it short like this intro let's check it out. We are back for what's up this week from the do this not that podcast is where you share all the stuff going on business marketing life and let's jump right into it because there's something big going on in the world of AI that we are all I think wrong about at least I was wrong about so first off what are we talking about did you know that 69% of AI sources change day to day what does that mean that means when you go to chat GPT and you ask it something and it gives you an answer with all these sources and citations and then you go there the next day and you ask it the exact same question the majority of time you're going to get a different answer with different citations sources and we got to solve that I'm going to share with you how but there's some new data

that just came out that has actually been studying this so here's what's up so first off what happened was Forbes came out and shared that Reddit lost 86% of its chat GPT citations in just a matter of a few days meaning that a lot Reddit was up there as one of the top sources that chat GPT was using in terms of giving credit for the answers that it was giving right so but out of almost nowhere it dropped from 3.8% of all chat GPT citations to under a half a percent in just the last 30 days from Reddit so what does that mean what does that mean for you as a marketer what do we need to be thinking about well we need to think about is our AI visibility and here's the mistake that people make people go on there and they search something up they see their brand and they go okay where good or they get some sort of tool out there and they use it and

the tool gets them showing up in Claude or chat GPT or Gemini and you're like okay we're good let's go on to the next thing but that's not the gaming work this is literally changing day to day so let me give you some stats first and then I'm going to tell you how we actually solve for this so get mentions just track this whole thing get mentions did and the other ones who came out with that 69% of AI sources are changing day to day they did thousands of identical queries across the four major platforms okay and they did this day after day after day and that's exactly what they found that 69% were changing but if you actually boil it down the daily churn for example on chat GPT was 79% on Gemini it was 88% perplexity was 44% and Google's AI mode was 75% all right so this is tough because you could be going in there and creating a report on Tuesday how is my brand showing up and it could be totally wrong by Friday and the other wild thing that came out this week

was from a company called Profound and Profound reports that 50% of content cited by AI answer engines is less than 13 weeks old so not only stuff changing but the different AI platforms want all this new stuff this is hard okay so what can we do first of all nothing is going to be perfect okay this is very much like internet marketing I remember because I'm an old nerd I've been doing this for a long time back 20 plus years ago internet marketing was changing every single day okay and that's exactly where at now so this is something that's a living breathing thing so what is it that you want to think about doing in your organization okay what you want to do is pick the 10 questions okay that influence someone buying your product or service the most that's what you want to do if you don't have 10 questions great get five questions then what you want to do is you're going to want to go every Friday and you're going to ask the exact same question you want to open up an incognito browser all right and you're going to incognito

browser meaning on the upper right hand corner of your chrome browser you go scroll down you click incognito because you can't do anything in your regular browser because chat GPT or Gemini or whatever remembers you you need to do this as it's a fresh look and then every Friday you're going to ask the same five to 10 questions about what what influences someone buying from you you're going to ask them to chat GPT and Gemini and perplexity and Claude every single week and then you're going to track how did we show up what position will we in who beat us what sources were cited the thing the three stats that you really want to make sure you know are what are your AI visibility rates okay what is the number one recommendation rate how often you you the first brand mentioned and also your own citation rate how often is your site actually cited now there's a simple prompt that you can use it doesn't have to be exactly this you can even go to chat GPT say what prompt should I use to have a weekly dashboard okay what prompt should I use have a weekly dashboard

about our AI visibility shop rate knowing that AI visibility is changing every single day but for our basic simple prompt you can just go to any of your favorite AI tools and say answer these five buyer questions normally and then you list your five buyer questions do not use previous conversations that is critical for you to say do not use previous conversations then list brands recommended in order is and you put your brand is my brand included yes or no what is my brand's position top competitors sources domain cited why my brand was included or excluded and do and do not alter the answer to include my brand the two key things you want to say always are do not use previous conversations and do not alter the answers to include my brand this is what we need to be doing every single week it seems ridiculous but it's frustrating to me to see how many organizations are

just buying a tool and think that they have it covered and they don't all right let's get into some other really bizarro news that I saw that was out there this week did you see this mountain do you know the soda that has more caffeine than 17 cups of coffee they came out with a men's grooming brand with another company called Duke Canon and they came out with a soap and body wash that you can buy at Walmart a mountain do body wash who is buying this what is going on like do you really go to Walmart like all right I need toothpaste I need some shampoo oh I'm going to get the I got so I need to get some body wash let me get the mountain do body wash I mean so what is the move there okay I'm going to use mountain do body wash then I'm going to spray myself with acts whatever all over my body and then I'm going to go out at night and wonder how come I can't get anybody at once going to date with me because you smell weird is that bad to say I don't know maybe it is

and then in pop culture let's get into sent you to ask ridiculous portion of this podcast first of all there's a lot of great tv on right now yes football is back amazing my fantasy team already lost in the first week but the real housewives of New York is back the reboot the new people fantastic go back and watch real housewives in New York the secret lives of more bin wives comes out this week let's go now if you like true crime which apparently is everybody I don't know why everybody likes true crime it's a little bit worrisome to me but there's a great new true crime show called the killer story on HBO max I'm telling you this like a three part show it is great but the biggest thing I have an issue with I always have an issue with something is dancing with the stars okay dancing with the stars came out and now they they share everybody that's on dance with the stars here's all the celebrities the way dances stars works is if you've never seen it they pair up one celebrity with one professional dancer that's what they do and so they have a cast of all these celebrities and they go these are our celebrities for this year's season and here's

the problem and maybe I'm an old nerd but like I don't know who any of these people are okay I just don't know who they are so they're not famous I'm gonna give you an example I'm gonna tell you that some of the pairs I'm gonna tell you the famous person and the dancer they're paired with and I want to know if you know which one is the famous person are you ready all right here's the first pair Riley Arnold and Connor Wood which one of those people is the famous person no idea zero burger no idea how about this one by the way it's Connor Wood okay the next one Moira Higgins or Mark Bayless who knows who these people are these are not stars I'm sorry to your families you're not a star by the way Moira Higgins is the famous one and then how about this one who's the famous person Haley Bills or Jenna doing I have no idea who are these people what is going on we need to up our game we need to get some real celebrities on there I don't know what's happening by the way Jenna doing famous congratulations to her listen I appreciate you being
