Why Bridegan's Confessed Killer Wants a Trial

About this episode

Henry Tenon admitted he killed Jared Bridegan. He took the deal that came with that admission — second-degree murder, fifteen years minimum, and a promise to testify against the two people accused of hiring him. In February 2026, he walked that away. He told the judge he wants a trial. The confession that was supposed to close this case now has to be proven all over again, without him helping.
Mario Fernandez is the one in the courtroom now, on trial for first-degree murder and solicitation, accused of hiring his former tenant to kill a man he'd never met. An FBI agent testified that Tenon's phone made a run eighteen days before the murder — out of Fernandez's rental, past Bridegan's neighborhood and his children's gymnastics facility, and on to Jacksonville Beach, while Fernandez's own phone never left the property. Prosecutors call that a dry run. The defense calls it a workday, backed by video of Fernandez with contractors at the same address. Still, no DNA, no fingerprints, and no surveillance put Fernandez anywhere near the truck used in the ambush, and investigators never even searched the property where that truck was later found.
Then there's the money — three checks, ten thousand dollars, written to Tenon roughly six weeks after Bridegan died, marked "landscaping" and "Kickstarter Good Luck!!" And a prosecutor's aside that a second, unnamed person was at the scene that night.
Bridegan was a thirty-three-year-old father of four, shot after stopping to move a tire on a dark road with his toddler in the car. Robin Dreeke and Tony Brueski dig into what Tenon's reversal really costs the state, with Gardner's trial next and Tenon's own trial still two years out.
