Why The Men Aren't Working Anymore
About this episode
National Review Senior Editor Charles C.W. Cooke, who hosts the Charles C.W. Cooke Podcast, fills in for Jim on the Monday 3 Martini Lunch. Join Charlie and Greg as they dig into Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear joining the left-wing chorus wanting to abolish the Electoral College, why fewer men are working now and what can be done to reverse it, a professor at Cal-Berkeley fed up with incoming students who are way behind on math, and a majority of Dems, independents, and Republicans favoring price controls.
First, they rip. Gov. Beshear for failing to understand the the purpose of the Electoral College. Charlie and Greg also explain why scrapping it would be really bad, both for Kentucky and for Beshear's fledgling White House ambitions.
Next, they wince at a New York Post editorial highlighting how men have fallen behind women in employment and that it's part of an ongoing trend, but it's one usually triggered by some shock like the financial crisis or the Covid pandemic. Charlie says we need to realize the economy doesn't look llike it did a couple of decades ago, and getting an accurate picture is a big step towards addressing the problem.
Then, they applaud a University of California-Berkeley math professor for venting that many of her students are entering the school anywhere from five to eight years behind in math and that she has to take time to teach concepts they should have learned in middle school. The professor, as well as Charlie and Greg, point to admissions policies and other factors that distract schools from simply admitting the best of the best.
Finally, they groan as a new poll shows a majority of Democrats, independents, and even Republicans all favor price controls. Charlie argues that many politicians are flat out lying about
our current economic conditions and are convincing too many people of the wrong remedy.
