Sunday with a 6.5 good morning.
It's Joanna and it's Sean.
And we are so excited to bring back our annual campaign.
Women who shine 2026 highlighting incredible women
from all walks of life here in Southern Nevada.
Joining us this morning, Crescent Oakley,
she is the financial education specialist for create credit union.
Thank you so much for joining us this morning.
Thank you so much for having me.
So let's dive in. Tell us a little bit about your background.
How long have you been here in Southern Nevada?
What brought you to your career now at Create Credit Union?
Well, I was raised here in Southern Nevada.
We moved my family moved here when I was 9 months old.
So basically, I'm a native, but true natives get a little touchy about that.
So I was not born here, but I've grown up in Henderson.
And I've loved everything about that.
Loved this valley.
I started at Create Credit Union 34 years ago this month.
And I was a member there before I worked there.
And I just loved the feeling every time I went in.
And then I was between jobs at one point and I went in one week.
And they were telling me that they had an opening and I should apply.
And I haven't looked back.
Wow, a 34 year career with the same company is very incredible.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
And that brings me to an important question.
You know, thinking back to 34 years ago,
when you started your career with Create Credit Union,
what piece of advice do you wish someone gave you when you were first
starting out on your career journey?
Honestly, it's something I did learn along the way,
but I do wish I had known it earlier is keep your options open.
Don't think you're in a job and that's the only job you can do.
I was lucky enough to be able to wear different hats.
I was a branch manager at a slower, smaller branch.
And I was able to learn a lot of things.
When I first started, I wasn't even aware that that was a possibility.
Otherwise, I would have probably tried to learn more things earlier.
Sure.
Yeah, keep your options open.
I love that.
There's something Joanna and I like to use all the time on there,
which is don't yuck someone else's yum.
It's kind of a quote that we toss around about being positive all the time
and celebrating the things that everyone
that bring people joy.
Do you have any quotes that you kind of live by
or something you've got tacked up on a board somewhere
that you look on and reflect that from time to time?
I was raised by and I raised my kids by treat others as you want to be treated.
Absolutely.
You know, if you're being mean to people,
they're going to be mean back.
So treat them nicely kindly and with respect.
Right.
And with your journey in particular,
you know, having so many different hats throughout your career,
I'm sure that's been very true along the way.
It doesn't matter what title somebody holds.
Everybody should be treated the exact same, right?
Yes.
I love that.
Exactly.
I've always heard being nice to everyone you encounter on the way up
because they are going to be the same people you encounter on the way down.
Oh, that's.
Yeah.
It's a solid piece of advice to have there.
I love that.
Now, we talked about kind of a saying that you live by,
but let's talk about your theme song or your anthem.
Do you have a song that, if you could pick that one,
walk out song, that one,
entrance song for you that represents you?
Do you have one?
And what would it be?
Well, one of my very favorite TV shows is Friends.
Sure.
My employees would find me in the break room on, you know,
the TV stations that have the reruns constant.
And I would be watching it every day on my lunch hour.
They would hear the theme song start up,
and I'll be there for you.
But I do feel that that truly represents me because my team,
my members of the credit union,
people know that I am there for them.
Oh, that's so good.
The Rembrandt's.
Wow.
Wow.
That's a good deposit of upbeat one.
We're fans of that one.
We like that.
Absolutely.
It was oddly enough.
One of the first albums I ever bought.
And it was because of the Friends theme song.
Yeah.
And there's other bangers on there too, by the way.
So let's talk about other inspirations in your life.
People, family, friends, anyone really.
Is there other women in your life, particularly,
that have inspired you throughout your life or your career?
Oh, there have been so many women
that have inspired me through my life, actually.
Career and personally, one that really comes to mind.
I worked retail before I worked at the credit union.
And I worked at a little place.
I don't know if you guys remember Millage Outposts?
Yes, of course.
Great jeans.
Yeah, great jeans.
And it was the place to work because everybody
who went to school with would come in and shop.
So one of my first managers was Gail Qualey.
And she was just amazing.
She was so strong, so optimistic and just so nurturing
that she was just an amazing leader.
And I aspired to be like her.
And I love that you brought up that she was like nurturing.
Because sometimes I think women often face the fact
that when you're emotional, when you're caring,
it's viewed as a negative, but it actually isn't.
Would you agree with that?
I agree with that.
Completely.
You can be strong and you can still nurture.
Absolutely.
You can have that empathy about you.
That truly brings a team together.
Love that.
You can be strong and still nurture.
That's, I hope my daughter is listening.
Because those are some wise words right there.
Thank you so much.
Absolutely.
