Zander Krause on Hurts, Barkley and Eagles' Contract Decisions

I think he adds, you know, I think he adds good, former player context to a guy like Jaylin. Like, it's easy to be in the mix or in the everyday and kind of be hyper critical because we're so hyper focused. You know, and sometimes when you're hyper focused, you can be hyper critical and in a way, you know, maybe hyper-phrase and things too, like a fan. And I think Mike steps back and he's just like, look, this dude played was the best quarterback in the field for not one but two different super balls. Now we didn't win him both. There's context, but that's a guy that can play ball. Is it always good? No, does there things that need to change? Yes, but, you know, right now this is a guy that can play ball

1:02that they got and you keep working with it. So I thought that was a pretty good perspective for Mike Gold. You know the thing that I don't do enough of when it comes to Jaylin Hurts? I don't talk about the things I like a lot in him. And I probably should do that more. And that interview, like I said with GQ, gave me more of a perspective on him. I do think he's genuine. Yeah, I actually watched it today. You are right. You told me yesterday it watches way different than it reads way different. I watched you take away. Would you take away? I think Hurts was looking for more from that guy. Me too. I don't think he was, I thought he intimidated him too. Yeah, but I don't think he liked the way he conducted that interview. I don't need to. Not in an overly negative way to the dude, but more from a sense of like his comment at the end told it all to me. He's like, that's it.

2:03Like you, you talked to me like a beat writer talks to me. Is that why GQ called me here today? And I took it a couple of ways. One, I thought he was right. That's a great take by you. Two, I thought. Jaylin is maybe putting himself in a position to become an even bigger star outside the bounds of Philadelphia. Now he already is a big one because of the NFL world, but I thought that was interesting that he clearly wanted that story to reach more than just Eagle fans, with the way he framed that. But I thought it was a good interview. I think Jaylin is a cool customer man. I think he, I think mentally he operates at a level that even great athletes, some of them with more regular mindsets are just not going to understand. And maybe that alienates people at times, but I think he's got such a great mentality. That interviewer from GQ couldn't shine my shoes.

3:03I'll tell you that because he's not very good. He's just not very good. And Jaylin took him to the wood shed. I'll tell you that. He really did. And my, is my assessment right on Hertz that when it came to relationships on the team, you think I read that right where I went, where I said, you know, if you think your relationship with me is going to supersede the winning of this football team and that's going to overplay, what we need to do as a collective, you weren't. And you got me wrong. I think the phrase is not. I think that is not how that guy looks at friendships. And so I think the way you phrase that is important because I don't think I would, I didn't come away from that or any time of Jaylin's career and say he doesn't want relationships. But I agree with you where he's not going to let that supersede the word you used or be more important than the, you know,

4:03the product and what they're doing and the winning of what they're trying to accomplish. So I grouped that. And I, by the way, I think that's the right mentality. I mean, dude, I'm not fucking here to make, to make peaches and any ice cream together and watch movies and talk about gossip. I mean, you want to do that. I'll go to the barber shop. I'll go to the Fitler Club where he did that interview. By the way, it's pretty dope club down in, I think it's somewhere in Filly, it Westfield, I don't know where it is, but Fitler Club School's five have been there. I was there once and I was a younger guy. But I think that's the right mentality, dude. I mean, you got, if you're lucky in the NFL, you got four years, five years, six years, in some cases for better players, seven, eight, nine, 10 years, in the NFL, 10, if you're a fucking, all great player, very few people make it to a decade in the league, optimize that time. Man, you've got to take advantage of that time, whether you're taking advantage of it financially or career-wise, Jalen is currently established that,

5:04the team success is something he wants to optimize for. And I don't think he should put relationships above that. I think, in fact, I think that would be weak and stupid and foolish. So I'm not gonna hold that against him at all, but I do agree with you. He won't compromise on it. No, and I think that sometimes players, especially at that position, demand it. And I think that's why what you said yesterday, Xander, why wide receivers are constantly on the move. Because the one thing that that position, it's a needy position, is it not? Oh, absolutely. It's a very needy position. It's so needy that it supersedes winning. Yeah, and I think by its very nature, it is a little bit. If you look at most other positions in football, and obviously you guys know all of them, none of them really rely individually like a receiver. Now, a receiver obviously relies on a quarterback, but from an individual town and impact standpoint,

6:05like even a cornerback. If you're a great cornerback, but you're a part of a shitty defense, well, your defense is gonna give up 40 points. If you're a great wide out, and you can go and get your numbers, you know, and it's kind of fitting for those guys in a way, I don't really hold it against them, but I do think if you're a leader of a team, or a quarterback, or even a coach, or a GM, you can't play Kate to their every win, you know? Even if, like we've talked about, oh, it was AJ right. AJ was right that the offense needed to be right, but you don't play Kate to that, because it's one of those things like you're giving in to take a yard. It's never enough. If we just said, all right, AJ, we'll get the passing game better. It would have been, well, now I want you to pass it to me more. And then you pass it to him more, and it's done, he more touchdowns. And then you get a more toucher, and now I need more of this. And now I want to be buddies with Jaylen and go have, you know, lunch with him and with him and our wives. Like, you can't please those guys. So I'm not, I understand more today than I did on June.

7:09Why probably AJ Brown was moved on. Now does that mean the results will be better? No, there's no guarantee that, but we'll see what it looks like. I do understand why they do it. Somebody brought this up, and I went back and looked at the transcript and it's right. So, Holly Roseman on that interview on WIP yesterday, or day before, said that loss to the 49ers was the worst loss for him as GM. And after the game and a paraphrasing here, Ciri Andi said we have to have a different approach and a different vision after that game. I think that, to me, I think that's a panic move. Listen here where I'm going with this. And here why I think it's a panic move. Why would you compromise 70 games of success for 17 ball games of not reaching where you think you should be?

8:14And you won 11 ball games. Sean Manian's floor is this with Kevin Tulo. You may say Kevin Tulo sucks, Zander. Well, you better win a division title. You better win 11 games. You better be in a playoff position because that's your floor. Anything less, Manian's a failure. The next. Yeah, I mean, I think it's tough for me to gauge that because there are other factors like all the variables you brought up were the team success. It kind of goes into conversation we had yesterday. It's like, you're not wrong. You're not wrong with the floor. It's odd. But what's the OCs? What's the OCs? Number one job to win games or put points on the board? Well, the OCs specifically is to create a effective offense. You know, and I think with, well, that's the kite coaching in the quarterback and the big picture job. You know, for example, if I'm a left tackle, yes, our job is to win.

9:14But as a left tackle, my job is to stop that guy from getting to the quarterback, right? There's different. The job of the left tackle goes into winning similar with corner. So you think the OC, correct me from wrong? You think the OC's number one priority in job is to utilize all the efficient assets that I have in that huddle to the best of their abilities to get the maximum out of what that offense could be. Yes, within the structure. Within, yes, within the structure of what. Because I want to know what you think an OC's job is. Like what is that job? That is it. I mean, I don't think the OC, I don't think the OC gets to say they have success. They he was successful. If you're the 26 ranked offense and your defense was the reason you won 11 games. I don't think you get to say you had a good night. If you win 13 to seven and you had a pick six for a touchdown and led the team, led the game and had eight, three and outs. I don't think the team won.

10:16Hey, Nick, you get credit for that. But the OC, that's a more focused to find job. Does that play into the picture? Does that also play into Kevin Patullo? Well, this is where I think we get. Like this is where I would respond to your original claim because not claim, but your original statement and your original point. Like you're right that the floor is high because of the success. But to me, I don't look at the divisional win last year or the 11 games or the playoff appearance as the floor for manual because I don't think anybody who watched that season actually believes that that offense, winning or not, performed the level that they could perform. So to me, the offensive coordinator, and he's not the only one to be fair. I think some fans go through far with that. But while we're talking about it, he needs to be, he did not do his job at the highest level. You know, there's the quote that Ciriana uses. You can't be great without the greatness of others.

11:17There's that. When you're a team game, everybody's got to do their individual part. It's like, it's something like a company. If you have the CFO trying to be the marketing manager, the CFO is going to be a great CFO. The marketing manager's got to be a great marketing manager. And then the company runs back. So that's how I feel about the individual perspectives of it. And individually, I would say the offense, in this case, the offense coordinator, needs to have a more efficient and effective offense issue. Now, the team floor is high. Division winning big 11 games that I agree with. But I'm not going to, for example, if they have, let's say, a much improved offense, their middle of the pack and three and outs, they fixed third down. All right, they, let's say they're 65 to 70% of what they were on the red zone last year. And they increased to 24 points a game.

12:21And they win 10 games. I'm not going to say, well, Manion failed. I'm going to say, well, he did his job with him, what he was asked to do is the OCA team. He improved the offense. You know, maybe somebody gets hurt on defense. Maybe the defense isn't as good as we think they are. Maybe the special teams blows three or four games. I don't know what the story's going to be. We'll see how it unfolds. But I'm not viewing it like the team accolades are going to be the way I judge Sean Manion. Not for me, at least. Sacred one, Barclay, Jalen Hertz. Will both those players be on the 2027? So that'll be Eagles. I'm going to say, yes, I think the one with the actual worst chance to be here would be Sacred. I know people will probably bulk at that comment and believe me, I'm, I'd bulk at my own comment. How he has a real history of maximizing guys through their primes and then looking to kind of capitalize when he feels as though that window shuts.

13:22As a 30 year old running back, which Sequan will be next off season, do we think Sequan, how he's going to keep him around to kind of see him through to the end? Or will he try and maximize a second round pick or a first round pick even, you know, for Sequan Barclay to try and, you know, pivot, draft a young running back, put tank, face me in the roll, go back to a mile Sanders, DeAndre Swift, take a type of duo and free up some cab space for Cooper and Quignon. I mean, maybe, but I would say yes, they both will be here. How much money will the Eagles owe Barclay in 2027? It's got to be probably 25 mil, right? If the Eagles keep him, Barclay is scheduled to earn a total of $16 million in cash. Okay, now if they cut him after, get this. Oh, get this though. Only 2.5 million of his 2027 money is fully guaranteed.

14:22Wait, how much is fully guaranteed? 2.5. That's it for next year. The Eagles built this contract structure, specifically to allow flexibility before the 27 league year. Only a 2.5 million dollars of his 2027 money is fully guaranteed. If the front office decides to move on from the 30 year old running back, rather than paying him the full 16 million in cash, well, they will only owe him 2.5 million in guarantees portion of his option bonus, releasing him post June 1 designation, would save the team 5 million on the 2027 salary cap. Well, that's interesting. They're going to have to do something with that then. That's right. That means Barclay's deal. If Barclay goes for 17 or 1800 yards, you're going to restructure Barclay. What's the trigger to guarantee the money? Is it like the new league year or something?

15:22Let's see here. Let me go back over here. Because 2.5 is love and the rest of it is what? Options here. Here's the contract. Okay, here's 20. Here's 2027 here. Base salary is 1.345. Pro rated balance is 2.75. If they release the guy, here it is. Get this. After this year, there is no money guaranteed in 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 33, 34. You know why? How we use 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 void years. Yeah, this is going to be a restructuring. I'm reading about it right now. Typically contracts with trigger at the start of the new year league year. However, the specific layout for Barclay's contract extension is explicitly structured to avoid automatic rolling guarantees

16:25for the 2027 season. Unlike his 25 and 26 seasons, which are heavily protected with full guarantees, the 2027 season is built as a team option decision year. Yeah, I think Barclay might be going after this year. Well, if he puts up 1700 yards, you're going anywhere off that guy. Well, what do you think I will do? Well, he puts up 1700 yards and someone says, I'll give you a first round pick. I think I would take that. I would move a 30 year old, run him back. Right. Hold safe one. He's going to be 30 in 27. Yeah, he's 29. He'll be 30 at the end of the year. Yeah, February, his birthday is I'm not giving that guy. I don't care if that guy gains you 1600 yards, I'm still not giving you 25 million, 23 million dollars for that. Third season and filling. Yeah, but yes, this year, 26, yes. Hmm.

17:26Boy, that's an interesting decision. I'm surprised. I'm surprised we haven't talked about this till now. This is almost more interesting than hers. Get this now. Think about this for a second. The guy you're leaning on has no guarantee money's next year. How about this one, Tuesday, your quarterback and your running back have limited guarantees for 27. See, this is why how we did that deal after the shoot. I know everybody said it was a thank you. I don't think it was. It wasn't a little bit, but how we loved when people said it was a thank you. He was trying to get to it. He was trying to get so I'm not getting that guy to his year 30 contract with the fully guaranteed money. That guy is that's a brilliant move. He knew if he didn't do it last year, he would have had to do it this summer. And then it would have been two more years on top of the guaranteed. Look at the phony money that's here that everyone always looks at. Oh, that's yeah, that's that's how it is 12.2 12.2 9 6 3. That's all phony money. All of that is phony dough. Okay, I mean, dude,

18:272.5 million. And but here's the one thing you got to look at. This is why your restructures coming. You're right. No matter what Zander, look at those cap hits in 828 29 and 30. 17 4 13 8 and 18 7. Well. It's gonna be interesting. I can't believe I haven't talked about this more. Hey, this is a bigger. Is this a bigger year for Barclay or for Hertz? Well, it's a big year for both of them. I mean quarterbacks that was the more important position. I mean, running backs are typically swapped, you know, and it's not uncommon for running back to go into a 30 year old season with no guarantees. I think the question here is. Does Sequan play the season differently?

19:27Oh, you mean like he did in New York when he shut it down at the end of that giant season. I mean, like he's trying to get to another max contract at 30 years old. And if he if he has four of your carries this year. That's that might limit his chance to get that. If Lane Johnson and landed Dickerson are in and out of the lineup. And you're Barclay in your his agent. What are you doing? You're going out. You're going out there and putting more bad tape up. Or are you shutting it down. And playing it to the off season and allowing the Eagles to move off a U. Shit, I can see him going back to New York. You mean going back there to. No. Going back with John Hardball. And if they hire Stoutland. Maybe.

20:27I mean. Damn, dude. Maybe so they could get out of board. At the Giants want to be dumb and pay max money to a 30 year old back after we got the best of his years. I don't think he they're going to pay max money for that guy. Oh, then who will. Well, no, the Eagles were releasing. You know, who won? If a team were smart and they wanted just a year or two good years out of them, I mean, you got to go to a team with a rookie quarterback. I hate to give Howard Roseman his flowers, but that's a. The dude has had to do. He knows how to make contracts. That is a crafted deal to. Yes, it is. For sake one to buy into that to his. Well, that's why he did it last year. Everybody was like, oh, think about it. Sales think about it. Everybody was crazy last summer. When they were like, wow, they can't believe they already gave sake one another deal. But think about it. If he didn't do that last summer, he would have had to do it. This summer.

21:27His agent wouldn't have taken only one more year of guarantees. It would have had to do another two years. So how he's like, let me pay sake one more. For last season in this upcoming season so that I can get out of that when I want to as opposed to waiting and then paying for it in the future. It wasn't about the market of running backs. It wasn't about getting ahead of anything. It wasn't about getting out of that contract when they wanted to. And keep it safe. One happy for the years that he was here. It was a genius move by howie. This was really a two. This was really a two year deal. Well, it's always a two year deal for how. But that's why they did it when he did it last year. So look at this. They did a contract until he was 37. Void void void void void void. Point how many one two three four five seven void years. But no fully guaranteed money. Man, a guy's a gangster.

22:29Hey, the fucking guy is a gangster in contracts, bro. He really is. They're going to move off that guy and you're going to get another running back the following year. They're going to find a guy out there in the open on the open market or they're going to be a doctor. I got an idea for is this last year a big beach contract. Hey, I'll tell you what. It's the last year of beach on Robinson contract in Atlanta. Oh, did they? I think you're right. I think you're right. I thought they think they agree after. Hey, if you would you do that, would you make a move to go down? Hey, what would be more beneficial to your team bringing a guy like Joe Burrowin or beach on Robinson? He just got a three or 75. You know, you still may, hey, I'll tell you what, you can still make deals here. My boy knows how to do it. Would you want to say, would you want beach on Robinson or Joe Burrow? 23:30Yeah, if you were making a gigantic. You had to think about both your quarterback and your running back next year. Who would you want on your team, burrow or beach on? Well, I don't think either of them are realistic, but I guess just for the thought exercise. You don't think they're realistic. You don't think it's your person. Literally just signed a 75 million. It's Atlanta. Yeah, but they're not going to move. It's Atlanta. Bad business. They should trade them before they signed it. Bad business equals Atlanta. I mean, okay, we're not talking about the Eagles here. I'm doing good business every year. We're talking about bottom dwellers. We're talking about people. Don't mean I'm good. Hey, did you hear what Joe Burrow said this year? I think people are going a little too far on jail and hurts. I really do. Look, I'm critical of them all the time. I really am.

24:30But what is the rush? Where does everybody think we're going? I know Siligo has you all silly wise to the point where Josh Allen's grow on trees. And you can just move off of her to end up with an elite elite. Or that. No, I don't need an elite quarterback. We're all we're going to go. Wait, I don't need an elite court. Who are the Eagles going to go to? He's wrong. You don't need an elite quarterback to win a Super Bowl. You know what the fuck is the emphasis on getting a guy like Joe Burrow? I don't because why would I want to pay 60 million? I can go get what I take Joe. Girl. Wait, wait, yeah. Wait, would you take Sam Darnell over jailing? I feel I feel like jailing. What is jailing on the left? You know, you use the four year window. What do you do the same thing as Darnell? But 30 million cheaper. It's not hard to create a narrative that it's possible to improve at the quarterback position. Of course you can. Does that mean it's the right thing to do? No, I don't think so. And a guy like Darnell's kind of a unique example. How many dudes are being picked up off the scrap people like darn he won 14 games and they let him walk. Okay. How many guys out there? Are you going to pay 30 out 30 million to and get that type of production? Okay, let me.

26:31And who? Give me a name because Darnell's taken. Okay, I'm going to give you a point here. And I don't want Darnell over Hertz anyway. Okay, okay. Okay, okay. So. In Seattle. Geno Smith was a starting quarterback for three years there. When nine and eight. He went 10 and six. He went 10 and seven. And. Everyone said you're going to move off of a guy who's winning you football games for a guy who's on his six football team. And everyone looked at that move and said shit, man. And everyone thought it was an insane move. What happened? Well, Geno goes to the Raiders. He goes two and three and Darnell goes 14 and three again and wins a Super Bowl 30 million dollars. For everyone else is getting 55 56 million. John Schneider rolled the dice. Students and I can get to the Super Bowl with a B quarterback.

27:32Do Brock Purtie and Sam Darnell are not elite football players. They've all gone to Super Bowl. Yeah, well, I mean, of course, it's a team game. Yeah, we talk about this. Exactly. Why am I going to pay Hertz $60 million when I could get there with an average quarterback? Well, you said the same thing about paying them 50 million and they had no problem making it to the Super Bowl. I think you're too caught up on the number. I'm more focused on the player. You got one because I don't think that player is worth 60 million. You already have a player. But I don't think you think he's worth 60 million bucks. That's not what I said. Okay. I'm saying the cost of doing businesses to cost of doing business that the Eagles can they have a quarterback that they can go to a Super Bowl with and win one with. What is the infatuation with saving a couple peanuts and hoping another guy that you bring in will be able to reach that level of success? So when you signed Carson Wentz to the richest contract in NFL history and how we the following year drafted Jalen Hertz in the second round.

28:36He was already thinking about the future of what it was going to look like after Wentz was he not. Yeah, that's because Wentz is a little bit of a, you know, I think. Yeah, but you got to put in context. Also, you gave the richest contract in NFL history. And how are the following years? That was the richest contract in history at the time. That was like six years ago, dude. But he was already thinking of moving off him when he's 30 million. We doubled that 60 million is going to be like like baby peanuts in a couple of years. But the point is is that he was already thinking of moving off of Wentz. Wow, he hasn't shown that yet on Hertz. No, really. Oh, really? Oh, really? I did he draft somebody in this first second round? Jalen was a second. Yes, and paid him. If he was this much conviction in him and believed in him like he believed in Jalen Carter. Well, does he believe in Seikman Barkley? Barkley's got his cut.

29:36No, I don't think that. No, I don't. Does he believe in Devote Smith, who's like the 20th page receiver and football? I mean, Devote, you sign that layman's deal. That's on you, son. And Devote, you got to go on show you can be a one now. We're putting you in that role. Get this. You know what's cool about how I get to a phase where I signed 25 million a year and someone calls it a layman's deal. Compared to the number ones. I'm going to say it. You're wrong. It's not 20. Hey, Christian Watson makes more money than Devote Smith. That's a tragedy. And that guy's never been over 900 yards receiving. I just think people get so infatuated with him. Do you think there's a guarantee of that? I think they think they know that they've done it before. I think Jalen's a part of it. Awesome. They won without them. They've won without them. 32:39Jalen says he follows what the coach is saying. Nick comes up with a play and Nick listens to advice and direction from how he. There's your coach. That's your meritocracy that you have inside your organization, right? Sometimes you're right. Sometimes you're off your fucking rocker. Oh, you don't think you don't know what you think Nick really makes any kind of decisions whatsoever. He's a. So let me, let me, let me. How did, how in God's name did Nick Sireon get the opportunity to hire the same stiff. The following year from Kevin Pettulo.
