Charles Green was a British astronomer and Royal Navy officer who is best known for his role in the first scientific expedition to observe the transit of Venus in 1769. Born in 1734 in Wentworth, South Yorkshire, Green was a talented astronomer who was appointed as the Royal Navy's first official astronomer in 1765. He traveled with Captain James Cook on the HMS Endeavour, where he made significant contributions to our understanding of the stars and the universe. Green's work on the transit of Venus helped to establish him as a leading figure in the field of astronomy, and his legacy continues to inspire scientists and historians today. He passed away in 1771 at the age of 37.
