Anselm was born in Aosta, Italy, and was educated at the University of Laon. He later became the Archbishop of Canterbury and was a key figure in the development of the Catholic Church. Anselm is also known for his work on the concept of 'fidei summa', or the highest degree of faith. He believed that faith was not just a matter of intellectual assent, but also of personal experience and devotion. Anselm was a prolific writer and left behind a number of important works, including his famous 'Proslogion'. He died in 1109 and was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church.
