William Gillette was an American actor, playwright, and inventor, best known for his portrayal of Sherlock Holmes on stage and screen. He was born on January 24, 1853, in Louisville, Kentucky, and died on July 9, 1937, in New York City. Gillette was a prolific writer and actor, and his plays include The Sherlock Holmes Plays and The Woman in White. He was also an inventor, and held several patents for his designs.
