Their headquarters were in Chicago, the railroad capital of the United States.
Their warehouses were built near train yards. Order something and it would arrive in your town by train a few days later. But Sears outgrew its office space, having clerks and managers working in train yards was impractical. The men who loaded the merchandise were necessary. Everyone else could work somewhere else. But moving 7,000 employees to the suburbs wouldn't work. Parking and good roads were a challenge. So Sears built the tallest skyscraper in the world, just off the loop in downtown Chicago. The Sears Tower at 1,700 feet tall, opened on this day, September 3rd, 1979. And on this day, sometimes building up instead of out is the right solution. I'm Chris Connell.
