The Speedwell and the Mayflower were supposed to sail together, but while still in port,
the Speedwell started taking on water. The two ships delayed their sailing for about three weeks while repairs were made. By late August, they set out to cross the Atlantic. About 200 miles offshore, the Speedwell sprung another leak. She would have to return to port. That was a tricky decision. It was September. An ocean crossing was much more dangerous in the fall. But the Mayflower continued alone. She'd have to carry twice as many passengers and about half of the supplies. Postponing the trip until the spring would have been ruinous. The pilgrims had no money and they would need places to live and work in England. On this day, September 6th, 1620, they decided to go for it. The Mayflower would set sail for the new world on her own. But on this day, remember to push on in the face of adversity. I'm Chris Conte.
