15 Candidates For School Board: Who Gets The Power?; Should Voters Or School Board Select Candidate?

I'm Jerry Miller, and thank you kindly for joining us on the water cooler of content and conversation in Charlottesville, Almarle County, and across Central Virginia. This, my friends, is the I love Seville show. A lot to cover on the broadcast, including last night to Almarle County School Board meeting. 15 people are itching and scratching and clawing and fighting for Alicin Spillman's at large seat on the school board. I'm not sure it's the most democratic process filling Alicin Spillman's seat, a seat that became open after Alicin Spillman shocked Almarle County by quitting. It's quitting. Yes, it's quitting midterm. Is it democratic that six school boards that have shown suspect leadership,

1:06suspect decision-making, suspect communication, and frankly, suspect characteristics are personally selecting the replacement. For Spillman, is that democracy to you? Is that democracy for you? Are you not perplexed or curious why this is not a vote-fold kind where Almarle County ends get to select the at large position? I want to talk about that on the show. I want to talk about what we saw last night. I want to talk about the sales tax referendum that's coming down the pipeline. Is it progressive or is it regressive? A once-sen uptick and sales tax strictly for capital improvement within our school systems. Schools are a cross-Iol unifying storyline.

2:07You would think, especially in this community, Almarle and Charlottesville, that is very quick to tax, that this referendum will pass. But is it truly the best, the best forward? I want to talk about that on the program today. I want to discuss Bob Good, our former congressman here in the fifth district. Bobby Good, he ripped the president, Donald Trump. You're seeing a splintered GOP, a splintered Republican party, the national level, at the commonwealth-wide level. Maybe not so much locally when it comes to what Trump is doing. Actually, I think it's splintered locally. I'd say the Republican party locally is splintered with its support and backing of the president. Bob Good rips Trump and that $5,000 to buy votes. We'll talk about that on the program today.

3:07There's a lot we're going to cover on the broadcast. We have a new business that's opened. Nothing but burgers on the little John spot on the UVA corner. Conan Owen is on site right now. Let's give him some love, Sir Spedia Central Virginia. Conan Owen, he's doing the signage, the vinyl lettering, and the interior branding and signage. He's setting me pictures right now. I'm giving you props on the show right now. Nothing but burgers is opening in the old little John spot. It looks awesome. I love to be able to somehow get you these photos without you interrupting the broadcast so you can put them on screen. What's the best way for me to do that? I mean, anyway, you do what I'm going to have to check email. Is that going to interrupt the broadcast? Not really. Nothing but burgers opening in the former little John's location on the UVA corner.

4:13And the spot looks awesome. I sent those to you, Juda. They're actual size, so maybe you can put them on screen. They'll be in your inbox in about 30 seconds. I literally just received them. I want to see spaces full. And I understand the mindset that, hey, this isn't a truly locally owned and operated business. And it's opening on our treasured UVA corner that's going to influence not just the four-year period here in Charlottesville for UVA students, but their memories of the University of Virginia, which without question, influenced these students and encourages them to maybe return to Charlottesville on the back end of their professional careers, the middle end, maybe even the front end. Heck, I didn't leave. I love Charlottesville so much after going to the University of Virginia. I stayed. And then I found myself starting a business 18 and a half years ago in my 20s. So this experience of the UVA corner, the nightlife, the party scene, the outdoors, the

5:19sports, the hiking, all the stuff we love, the culture, the music, all the stuff we love, without question is influencing 18 to 22-year-olds in this time of their life where they are impressionable and influenceable and have an incredible zest for life. And as they experience some of the best times of their lives, the first true independence of their lives, college, they wax an nostalgic of it. They yearn for it as they mature into adulthood. As we mature into adulthood, and as we get into this 9-5, this 9-6, this 9-7, whether you want to admit this or not, Charlottesville and El Maro County are now a 60, 70-hour work week town. You find that you're not getting ahead, I understand that. Are you working 40 hours a week? Perhaps that's why you're not getting ahead. You may not want to hear it, but it's a 60-hour week, not a 40-hour work week community. That's what happens when you have a $140,000 median family household income and rising.

6:2218 to 22-year-olds wax an nostalgic of zest and carefree college life, which is influence what they experience. And some say that having corporate chains and out-of-town businesses on the UVA corner is going to disrupt that nostalgia and influence it in ways that may not be positive. I'm not buying that. I would rather have a business in Little John's than have the storefront sit vacant. And I'm looking forward to the success of nothing but burgers. 7:23which is a record setting amount for tourism in Al Moro County in Charlottesville. I'll ask you this question. You got those photos? You ready to put them on screen? Here's nothing but burgers. Does it say university drugstore? Look at how nostalgic this is. This is the kind of stuff I love about Charlottesville. I was in the, nothing but burgers guys now open on the UVA quarter in the former little John spot. Put the inside back on. This reminds me of the branding of that comfortable, your favorite blanket that every time you grab it and you sit on the couch or you get in bed or you sit in the lazy boy and you wrap yourself in that comfortable blanket, you just feel at home. It just brings back warm memories. That's what this branding palette looks like to me. All right, put you and I on a two shot. They've reserved and booked a beachfront mansion where he will be enjoying the finer things of life, the spoils of life with friends and family next week. I mean, if you're going to go like this, then... Tushae, Tushae. It's difficult for the cameraman if the talent's moving around, Tushae, Tushae. Judah, I'm going to relay my mourning to the viewers and listeners and localize it for them from a storyline standpoint. I got to the office this morning at 8.30am, our building. We're on a good chunk of this building on the corner of fourth and market street. 8.30am, I had a new lease signing with a client that's been a client of ours, not just for our consultancy, where we help her and her business gain market share. She owns the number one cleaning company in Charlottesville, Almerone, Central Virginia.

11:24Her name is Shelley Quick. Michelle Quick. Shelley Quick is just a fabulous, fabulous person. We've helped Shelley Quick gain market share by positioning her brand digitally, her mobile website, her digital presence in a strategic way, and it's really driven top line revenue for her. We've also helped Blurridge professional cleaning and Shelley Quick secure commercial space. First in our building, the Maclin building here, where she's leased a couple of offices, she's quickly outgrown that space and is now, today, moving into the Wells Fargo building on the downtown mall on the fifth floor, where she's going to have a fabulous view of the downtown mall with a windowed office and plenty of storage and space for her team to call headquarters. Shelley's a lifetime Charlottesvilleian. She moved out of the area for a short period of time, but Charlottesville's home and the downtown mall in particular for Shelley Quick is special to her.

12:26She's been up and down these bricks and before they were pedestrian for a long period of time. Okay. Shelley's awesome. To see her face when she got the keys and the fog and her new office on the fifth floor of the Wells Fargo building made my day. She was absolutely smiling ear to ear. She thanked me. She was grateful. Over the top, grateful. She didn't have to be. This is my job. This is how I make my living. But I saw the American dream play out with Shelley as someone who previously was in bookkeeping decided to go into business for herself to start a cleaning company. Her initial headquarters were storage units, literally storage units. Then she goes from storage units to our building to now one of the most significant pieces of real estate, a building that first started construction in 1914 as Jefferson National Bank. I have photos that were sent to me earlier today from the 1960s with the bank call and

13:36a cocktail party. They obviously aren't going to be able to see this. I love to put them on screen one time. After that meeting with Shelley, I had a client come in, another client come in that's looking for to purchase a business. We're helping broker a deal with him to potentially buy a business. This is a guy that's credentialed and has worked white color jobs. It's been at the pinnacle of the profession. If I mentioned his previous employer, you would be like, why leave that job? I asked that question. He said, because I want to go into business for myself. He's willing to work a service industry business. He's willing to build a business for scratch. What I did was I walked him for a couple hours around the downtown mall, showed him office space, commercial space where he could launch a business. We discussed the service business, a client of mine that's looking to sell. We reviewed financials, talk P&L, balance sheet, seller discretionary earnings. What kind of valuation for that business?

14:39I talked cash on hand, financing, SBA, or if he wants me to find financing for him. It's a glimpse into what I love doing, which is helping people, making human connection and figuring out ways to help people actualize their dream through business. It's an absolute joy to do this. It's my favorite aspect of what I do, even more so than hosting this talk show. Where I'm going with this is this community is absolutely, absolutely, from the top to the bottom and the bottom to the top, comprised of so much talent and so much commitment to bettering Charlottesville. Look, we may disagree with the city council and we may disagree with an Amaro County Board of Supervisors and we may disagree with the city manager and how they go about their business, but I do believe they're committed to bettering Charlottesville.

15:42Now, this Amaro County school board scenario, I'm extremely suspect. My son calls it Suss. That's Suss. That's so Suss, Dad. First, I'm like son, the word is Suspect. The abbreviation of Suspect to Suss, A, doesn't make you sound smart and B, it takes an extra second for you to say Suspect for Suss. I'm like, stop saying Suss. He goes, that's Suss, Dad. What you just did right there was Suss. I said, stop saying Suss, son. He goes, you're being Suss, Dad. We're getting old. Get on. I'll putty-dotty over here. Every group of kids has had their short and words and some of them have even made it into the National lexicon. William McChesney, welcome to the broadcast. They interviewed yesterday in 12 minutes segments. Down from 19? It was initially 19. Now 15 went to a school board. I know some of these people. A lot of these people watch and listen to this show on a regular basis, by the way. I mean, Jo-Leen Pizarzik, she watches and listens to the show. Leslie Pryor, Daisy Rojas, watches and listens to the show.

17:47She's also been very vocal in this whole scandal. Conan's saying it's not on LinkedIn, not on LinkedIn, but on all the other ones. Where do you want to start? Do you want to start with William Woodard? He's an attorney. He spoke last night. I just leased office space to Will Woodrow. I spoke to him when he came by for that and we discussed briefly his application. One of the 15 candidates, William Woodrow, is in a local attorney who previously had office place in the Lewis and Clark building. We just transitioned him to the Wells Fargo building. Literally this week, I gave him the keys yesterday. The lease was signed last week. Fantastic human being. Yeah, definitely. Steve, I know that after speaking with him, I would 100% appreciate him in that seat.

18:49Conan Sence Guy lives in the Murray school district. Steve Colizarra, a previous school board member. Daisy Rojas watches the show. Half of these candidates on a daily basis are watching our show. Where do you want to go on the 15 of 19? Judah Wiccauer. Where do you want to go on last night's meeting? Where do you want to go on people filling out since Billman? The school board members themselves picking the seat. Sus. Sus folks picking somebody that can go sus it up with them later on. I think my, you know, part of me doubts that the voting habits are going to change, meaning that, that even if we put this to a vote, we would still end up with likely.

19:49Would we, you're saying the same candidate anyway? If this was put up, Jenny who, do you buy that? I don't know if it would be the same candidate they would choose, but I think someone like, I think some of the people would never have a chance either way. I mean that most of the remaining school board members are in all likelihood, Democrats and left leaning. We all know that the voting habits in Al Moral County in Charlottesville are largely the same. That's out of the, out of the, all those candidates that we have, that's no guarantee that the school board would choose the same people that voters would, but I think we can safely weed out some candidates that the school board is not likely to choose and

20:50people that the voters are unlikely to choose. Sadly that probably includes people like William Woodrow and Daisy Ross. Jenny who, her photo on screen, I like these comments and I'm going to mention them live on air. May I face time you into the show as well? I just sent that to Jenny who via Twitter. Jenny who says this, schools should not get another dimension until they fix safety and academic issues. They've already wasted plenty of our money. Jenny who also adds, I met several of the people running. Jenny who says they are worthy candidates, worthy candidates who will never be chosen because they differ from the hive mind. I mean I've heard through the grapevine, I don't have this as, I don't take this as fact.

21:55I've heard through the grapevine that the fix was in for Steve Colazar. The 79 year old soon to be 80 year old. Steve Colazar. He is the safe candidate, especially for I think the school board. I mean you. That's it right there. They said he's the safe candidate. I don't think he's going to push back on whatever decisions they decide to make. But we'll see. Tom Starge will watch in the program, the golden apple award winner, Tom Starge. He says this, his photo on screen. Does anyone on this planet really believe these candidates got a fair evaluation? The fix is in from the start. I think for the first time in a long time there's a chance for voters to really look and listen to the candidates. Maybe. Like here's the question that I have for the viewers and listeners.

22:55Are you ready for this, Judah Wickauer? 15 candidates, one seat, who gets the power. That's the lower third on screen. 15 candidates for one seat is an extraordinary amount of interest. The immediate question is why. Is it healthy civic engagement or is it evidence that people believe that Almeril County public schools are at a pivotal moment? That's what we have to ask ourselves. Ask this question at your cocktail and charcuterie party tonight. It's tailgate. It's a tailgate night. UVA, Norfolk State play. It's a 44 and a half point line. It's not going to be a close contest. You're probably going to spend more time ladies and gentlemen tailgating and drinking and consuming cocktails. I could FaceTime UVA, Ginni who via Facebook messenger. That's probably how we're going to do it. Tell me your last name, again, put it in the Facebook and then I'll bring you into the show.

23:57This is the question that I have for you viewers and listeners. 15 people for one spot is extraordinary. Is it an indication that Almeril Countyans are civically engaged and want to give back or is it an indication that Almeril Countyans realize we're at a pivotal moment for our school system, the six largest county in the Commonwealth and they feel more compelled than ever to get engaged and participate to write the ship. Like do they actually have trust in the school system? I would like to think that we have such a large candidate pool because the candidates are want to make sure that the school board has a bit of transparency. The real word I'm looking for is I can't find it but basically somebody to watch and make sure a watch talk for lack of a better word.

25:02To make sure that the candidates are all working together towards the same goal which is the protection of our children. That being said, I don't know if that's the case or not. What criteria will the six members actually use when they pick this candidate? This educational philosophy, political compatibility, parental perspectives, professional backgrounds, independence, will the six Almeril County seat a sitting school board members? Will they find someone, will they select somebody that is going to hold them accountable or just tow the company line? Do they realize that this critically important crossroads? Do they realize that this critically important crossroads that our school system and this pick is not just to rebuild trust, is not just to help keep our kids safe.

26:10We're hearing predator stories at other schools at Almeril County Public Schools. We've already got predator stories at Woodbrook, predator stories at Holly Mead. We're hearing sketchiness at Western, Henley and Brownsville now. Do these six members realize that whoever they pick to fill Alcent's billment spot is going to help choose the next superintendent? Do they realize that whoever fills this Alcent's billment spot is going to be a key partner with this referendum? I would bet the referendum passes and I would bet a regressive tax is going to go into play that pops us whenever we're buying and selling stuff just to allocate money to schools and capital improvement. Well, guess what? This person that they select is going to determine how that money is allocated. Think about the importance here. You can make an argument that this spot that they're filling is as important spot as any

27:19the school board has filled. Agree or disagree, Judah Whitcower. I agree. I'm going to try to FaceTime, Jenny, who. I agree, especially because I think that it's going to show where their hearts are. Are there hearts in covering their back sides or are there hearts in finding and- Hello. I would love for your commentary on anything on what you saw last night or anything out of our county public school related. So when I went to that last school board meeting, I met several of the people who are now

28:21running and took the time to talk with them and talk with Phil Rees as well because back in the day, actually, I played with the idea of running for school board and said, oh, they're several excellent candidates but they're never going to get chosen. They won't get chosen whether the school board chooses them or like due to a thing, whether we get to vote. Like I said, because of the high-fim. What do you make of this fiasco that is our county public schools right now? Well, I can tell you my DMs are full of people asking homeschool questions and wanting to know what they can do to get started. Just a PSA, you could pull your child from school at any time of the school year if that's something that you're leaning towards. I just, you know, they were already failing our kids academically and now they can't even keep them safe. And as a parent, that breaks my heart. I just, and it breaks my heart, but parents who feel like they have to stay within this

29:26system, but they don't have a choice because I can't imagine sending my kids off and worrying about, I mean, more than normal worries, right? But thinking something could happen to them every single day. Hey, man. Last one for you. Take or commentary on Kate at Cuff and Rebecca Burlid. The text we talked about yesterday with Matt Haas in close session, I know you got a take on that. Yeah. Obviously, they're, I mean, they're work dealing. We all suspected they were wheelings of dealings behind the scenes, right? And it just proves it that we can't trust these people. And it, but you know what, they're so full themselves and so sure that they can get away with all of this. They'll never step down willingly. You're awesome. I hope you have a great weekend. 31:27That would make the program better. And I'll close with this. Is it talking point for your tailgate tonight? It's not going to be a close game. You're going to be spending most of your time at the tailgate. And is it talking point tonight, viewers and listeners? Ask yourself this question. The 15 people that are trying to fill Allison's billment spot. Are they doing it because they are civically engaged? Are they doing it because they realize the school systems at a pivotal movement? There are now rumor mill sketchy sketchy sketchy stuff at Western, Henley and Brown'sville, along with the actual on the record stuff we know about Woodbrook and Holleyme. Whoever fills this spot is not only expected to rebuild the trust with the community, but they're also expected to keep our children safe moving forward, safe from predators, find

32:29the next superintendent of Amar County Public Schools, fix the performance test wise that it's clearly slip post COVID and figure out what to do with this referendum that most likely will pass come November. This is a critical moment for the six largest county in the Commonwealth. All right, let's give some attention. Vanessa Parkhill said she absolutely loved Ginny Hood Live. I love it. Vanessa Parkhill, you're going to be on here one day too. Same with you, Tom Stargell, the Golden Apple Award winner. Do you put that big, beautiful brain of yours in motion of how we integrate with the five software that we're already using? Another cog with the video conference into the show. We obviously can do the photo of the viewer and listener on screen. And at bare minimum, I would love for you to integrate some kind of on air now, branding below their photo, so people know that they're talking.

33:32But in an ideal setting, I would like to video conference in the viewer and listener into the show. You go to the studio camera. Can you go to the studio camera, please? You're on the studio camera? We could with this big center TV that I'm pointing to, viewers and listeners look. See that big TV? This is like a 70-inch TV. I could Apple TV. I think we're better off using the Apple TV from my phone to that big TV where the viewer and listeners faces on that big TV talking and we capture the audio on air. But you don't like that? Can't for the audio by holding your phone up to the mic? I mean, a better solution, I think, would be to use the system we've already gotten placed to get people connected. That would connect them to your computer. We have to do it on the fly, though. It has to be. It's not going to be planned. We could just have one set up and ready to go.

34:34It would have to be completely on the fly and tapable and very adaptable. I mean, it would be a matter of you setting someone a link. I see. I think that's a stop too much. Comments? Handsome Hank Martin says, last night's performance by Rebecca Berlin reinforces her inadequacies as chairwoman. The last minute changing of previously established rules and are seemingly unwillingness to enforce her own edicts was an embarrassment. Yes, indeed, the tax is assuredly regressive and we know full well given this school board's slimminess, the money will go whatever to whatever they wanted to and will hide and will hide it in bureaucracy. Hank Martin also says, despite its attempts to spin the narrative otherwise by the school board, there is no trust or faith in Amor County public schools presently and know the school

35:38board will not select anyone who will adequately represent student safety and parents and taxpayers concerns. The attitude they've shown since the 10th of June with the Hallymey Town Hall is still on effect and they seem unwillingly to build that trust again. It's all about institutional self-preservation. Jason Noble watching the show. He's a smart guy. Let's get Jason Noble's photo on screen. Parted in my millennialism, but we don't need any weak boomer energy on that board. That's what Jason says. He asks, was there a standout interview? I think there were a lot of standout interviews. Frankly, I think there were a lot of standout interviews. Georgia Gilmer has your back here. Don't make Judah think about work on vacation. He's not you. I mean, you don't think about work 24-7 365? It's little as possible. That's reassuring. I think about work 24-7 365.

36:40See the problem is that that doesn't give your mind a chance to refresh. There are times when you hit a block and the best thing you can do is stop thinking about it and let your mind... It's like dreams. My body doesn't work that way. I don't care. Dreams are the way you work through issues. I'm just saying, I find that oftentimes when I'm having trouble with something, I've got to think about other things. I got to stop and smell the roses, look at the clouds, and when I come back... Rip a dart? You normally rip darts. When I come back fresh, then it's... A lung butter stick? Yeah, sure. But when I come back the next day, the answer is there. I just needed a little time to bake an oven, so to speak. Okay. And that's why this works here because I'm the absolute opposite of that. I'm consumed with it. Yeah. Absolutely consumed. And it's worked. That's why it works.

37:40And I'm not saying your way is wrong. Questionable. Your way is not wrong. Your way is not wrong. My way is just more right. Sure it is. Spencer Pushard watching the program. The people that are chopping at the bit pushing this forward are the people where this is going to be impacted negatively, impact the most. If they don't see it, it's like the $80 million for Bu for middle school round of speech. Wait, you're saying... Did I hear you say that the people who are pushing it are the ones that are going to be most affected by it? I don't know if that's necessarily true.

39:42What do you mean? The people pushing it aren't the people in 5-fill or... I have your Gilligan's pushing it. He lives in the prospect neighborhood. Yeah, but he's clearly not worried about it. All right. Okay. My point is this. A sales tax increase is not going to negatively impact wealthy or upper class. Like it's going to impact lower class and lower middle class. Yeah, definitely. Money coming in from tourism last year? Nearly cracked a billion dollars. Nearly one billion, $100,000 in revenue from tourism. Over one billion, over one billion in 2025, which is a record. $603.5 billion in visitor spending in Almaro County, a 2.8 increase over 2024. In the city of Charlottesville, $427,700,000 in visitor spending, a 6.3% increase in 2024.

44:52So both Almaro County and Charlottesville City combined are nearly $1.1 billion. Let's just say $1 billion plus. That is crazy. A 2.8 increase, 2.8 in Almaro County, 2024, 2025, and a 6.3 increase in Charlottesville City, 2024, 2025. Here's my take on this. Are you ready? First, great to see Charlottesville rebound. Without question, the jurisdiction locally that has the most headwinds is Charlottesville. It's got the most headwinds because of visibility, really. It's got the most headwinds because of politics, because of the homelessness. Perceived crime, although I don't think that's an actual real factor, but maybe the perception is activism, A11 and A12, we still haven't recovered A11 and A12, Charlottesville City.

45:56Statues, sales and recovery, post-COVID sales and recovered. So a 6.3% uptake, 2024 versus 2025 for Charlottesville, is invigorating, relieving, shows in is a KPI of recovering. Key performance indicator. Almarac County carries central Virginia viewers and listeners. You may not know this or not. The University of Virginia is Almarac County. Even the stuff in the city, it's Almarac County. Almarac County's got the vast territory of central Virginia. It's the 6 largest county in the Commonwealth. Almarac County's got the most rooftops. Almarac County's got the most businesses. Almarac County's got the most venues. The most vineyards, the most wineries. Do they have the most breweries? Is it safe to say Almarac County has the most breweries? That might be a toss up with Charlottesville. Charlottesville might actually have the most breweries, right? I'm trying to think which breweries actually are in Almarac County.

46:59Star Hill, pro-renata. That's two. Star Hill pro-renata. What else is in Almarac County that's a brewery? I mean, we know the obvious ones. All right, Charlottesville City's got more breweries. So for Almarac County to uptake 2024 versus 2025, about 3%, 2.8%, that's also a big time. Put it in perspective due to what strikes you from this. I mean, I think despite all of, despite Charlottesville ending up back in coming out of someone's lips, whether it's talking about A11 and 12, which is especially irritating when that person has never even been here to, you know, COVID was COVID. Every place was messed up by COVID. I think it's hopefully, I don't know, I put this,

48:07not a wake up call for City Council and the Almarac County Board of Supervisors. But, you know, there's speaking about, speaking of raising tax dollars for whatever purpose, whether it's schools or something else, this is concrete money that doesn't rely on taxing people who perhaps can't afford another rise in taxes. Listen to the numbers here, guys. Almarac captured $603.5 million. $603.5 million. Charlottesville, $427.7 million. I'll give you more data. Restaurants, wineries, bars, and other food and beverage businesses accounted for $375.9 million.

49:12Logging hotels generated $223.1 million. Tourism supports an estimated 7,217 local jobs. 7,217, local jobs. This is as big a business as Charlottesville, Almarac County has. Charlottesville, Almarac County appeared to be maximizing this economy, the tourism economy. You see why hotels continue to be built. We're not close to being over-hoteled. You got to wonder, is the downtown mall capturing the spending? Like UVA, the corner, and Almarac County are. If there's one pocket that might be underachieving,

50:13as of now, it's the downtown mall. Another reason for the policy to limit camping and the storage of possessions in public. Juan Diego Wade, Lloyd Snook, and Natalie Osherant, it's up to you because magic money, and the fleisher, and move out of your parents' basement pain are not going to do this. They're going to try to manipulate and bamboozle people by calling it the criminalization of homelessness, criminalizing homelessness.
