2:31It's 49ers. It's 49ers. Cut back podcast time. Welcome to the show everyone. I want to talk about 49ers key matchups. First on Miami Dolphins on Sunday. Depending on who you're listening to right now, you've got some saying that the four years are going to beat the breaks off the Miami Dolphins this week. The Miami Dolphins just don't compare to the San Francisco 49ers roster. I think there's a lot of truth in that. And then there's some that are saying this is a trap game. The 49ers are going to be dealing with the sleep deprivation and dealing with everything that goes with playing in Australia. And the big letdown of playing that big game against Los Angeles Rams and then coming back and having to play the Miami Dolphins. And it's a trap game. And so there's two trains of thought when it comes to this game. Now I don't know if it's going to be a trap game or not. I don't know if the four years are going to ultimately beat the breaks off them.

3:33But I do know that the key matchups are going to play a big pivotal role in what happens in this football game. The San Francisco 49ers have a lot of advantages when you talk about roster versus roster when you talk about X's and those. Kyle Shanahan where he more is brand boy or there are definitely advantages for the 49ers now with all things you look at the dolphins and they have some key elements to their offense and defense that can make life difficult on the San Francisco 49ers. But at face value just looking at the roster. I understand why it's simple to say hey the 49ers are going to beat the breaks off the dolphins and you look at the lines and they're kind of saying the same sort of thing 13 and a half point favorites. The 49ers versus Miami Dolphins now what people say in the media what fans say is one thing what they say in the locker room is something completely different. We all know that the 49ers. They're not going on what the dolphins did last week they don't care that they lost the Las Vegas Raiders when the dolphins are coming into this game the San Francisco 49ers are looking at them as an undefeated team a team that they have to beat that this is the biggest game of the year you approach every single week like it's a one game season.

4:43So for the 49ers I don't feel mentality wise that it's going to be a trap game is there some some to the body timing and that sort of thing there could be I don't know where they're at with that they say they feel good they're going to have more time you know being back in normal California time then being in Aussie time so I think that that should lean towards them being right. But I don't know that for sure and so I can't tell you 100% that that's not going to play into it the jet lags not going to make a difference in this game with how the 49ers come out if they're lethargic or they ultimately don't have you know the gas when you get to the fourth quarter I don't know that what I do know though is when you look at X is a nose the 49ers they got to be feeling pretty good about this team and you just watched a team in the Las Vegas Raiders they don't do everything like the 49ers but when you're looking at similarities you got an offensive coordinator and head coach there. That was in your building you understand him well he was in fact he was in your division just last year and you know what kubiak does to attack defense and you got to see it on full display against a guy you're very familiar with and Jeff Hathley Jeff Hathley was in the building for the 49ers in 2017 when Kyle Shanahan took over he was working with Robert Salas course he moved on eventually landed with Matt Laflore in Green Bay and turned that opportunity into the head coaching job with the Miami Dolphin so familiar with the

7:20and then there were a few other injuries that I just want to mention as we're kind of building towards this week in the game preview because you had limited in practice Kalon black and how she and then took the kmbr local radio and said hey this wasn't anything serious he felt a little bit of tightness we wanted to be careful with them but this is something to at least monitor because it could adjust how the running back rooms as far as active for the game last week they left Jordan James in active if they are a little concerned about Kalon black scrolling they could potentially have Jordan James active so I bring it up for that point because that's going to be one of the factors we talk about is of course the 49ers run game versus Miami dolphins it's just always something you have to talk about Nick Bosa was just resting but he was limited in practice Kyle use check still with the finger limited George Kittle his Achilles limited Keon white his back limited and I think with George Kittle you can probably expect him to be on the injury list probably pretty much the whole entire season but other guys for the 49ers healthy now for the dolphins they did have two guys not

8:25participating practice that's linebacker Ronnie Harrison he's doing with hamstring and linebacker chop Robinson who's doing with a concussion there's no guarantees that chop Robinson is going to play in this game you just don't know how players are going to move through concussion protocol and that could be huge as Miami could be losing a young pass rusher to get after a Brock party in this game so those are ones that you got to keep an eye on we'll see how things kind of play out with that but let's get into these key matchups and I'm going to try to go back and forth do it like an offense do a defense and kind of go into this but I want to start and that's part of the reason I wanted the injury of poor with Klon Black and the San Francisco 49ers running game and last week they really surprised everybody with how they approached the usage of Klon Black you know and you don't normally see the 49ers number two running bag get over 10 carries and he walked away with 14 and I thought it was a great usage of Klon Black and it only works if Klon Black is able to execute the way he did and he did a really good job

9:29you know executing on those carries and picking up yards really help the 49ers offense keep moving because you have to feel comfortable that he's going to be able to get it done on the ground that way a guy like Christian McCaffrey can get those breaks and then look good later on now going into this game you have a situation where the Miami Dolphins were not good against Aston Gentie and that Las Vegas Raiders offense last week stopping the run the Miami Dolphins gave up 130 yards in that game this is going to be a key emphasis for the 49ers going into this week is establishing a run game and you saw last week that Kyle Shanahan kind of mixed in the run but was very much trying to limit the pass rush for the Los Angeles ramps early in that game with quick screens and getting the ball out quickly and kind of being more diverse in the first drive I expect that to change a little bit this week where I think he'll get a little bit more into the run game early in the drive and not be as diverse when talking screens and the kind of spreading the ball around in the passing game

10:32I don't think they're going to go with the passing game on the opening drive some but I do think they're going to try to establish the run game against this Miami Dolphins football team which is very young when you look at the defense they got a lot of young players are starting a a rookie middle linebacker and Jacob Rodriguez who by the way he fits the bill he is really good they've got a young free safety and Michael to have they got a nickel corner and Chris Johnson who is young as well but they just got a lot of guys that kind of need to get work you know that some of their guys that they got that are familiar to 49er fans have about Robert Bill junior he is a backup defensive in there but chop Robinson dealing with the concussion we'll see how that thing plays out the 49ers have an opportunity to take advantage of this Miami Dolphins run defense and if they can establish the run game it's going to kind of open up the rest of the offense so last week it was about spreading it around getting the Los Angeles Rams running sideline to sideline getting them off balance with when when pass was going to come when run is going to come

11:34I think this week the four years are going to be a little bit more dedicated to running football and getting K-Long Black going early I think they'll sprinkle in Christian McCaffery the way they did before but I think it tell this blueprint of K-Long Black getting some carries early on in the game doesn't work I think they're going to stick with it and the thing is you always have the opportunity to take him out of the game and put Christian in if you feel like K-Long Black is just not getting it done at the time but I think that this is going to be one of the keys in this football game is this 49ers running game that had 174 yards on the ground last week being able to continue to establish the run because it sets up the rest of the offense those linebacker step up those safeties start to creep up and then you can hit some shots over the top or those linebacker step up those safety stay deep because they're worried about you going vertical and then here comes Debal and one of those big deep crossers across the middle of the field and it's a house call or a big explosive play 49ers want that to happen they want those young guys to engage to want to come up and stop the run you want them to be aggressive

12:40and then you want to take advantage of their aggressiveness I think that this game plan is going to look a lot more 49ers-esque with the way that they handled the run game, the way that they handled the passing game last week was a little bit more diverse I think there'll still be some of that in there because this is the new 49ers offense when you're talking being able to spread the ball around to all the different weapons but I think that they're going to kind of hold true to what they've been doing too so I think that that's one of the key factors on offense is going to be running the football with K-Long Black and that method running the ball with Christian McAfry and you know into the second quarter in the second half those are going to be Christian McAfry times the shine and I'm super excited about that now if you want to bet on this game you need to go check out Fan Duel right now the 49ers are a 13 and a half point favorite to the Miami Dolphins that's going at minus 105 the over under for this game going at 45 and a half with the 49ers output on offense last week you got to believe they think that the Dolphins aren't going to score many points

13:44that's part of the reason that they're leaning into the 13 and a half point favorite for the 49ers now they do have some cool player props including a same game parlay which is a touchdown trio that's McCaffrey, Mike Evans and Malik getting a touchdown in this game. So you got Christian McAfry with an anytime touchdown Mike Evans with an anytime touchdown and Malik Willis with an anytime touchdown that's going at plus 1384 which means you put $10 down and you win 138, 48 on that bet they got all kinds of other player props as well you can bet on Brock Pertipast yards you can bet on Christian McAfry catches touchdowns whatever you want to do you can bet with Fandall. But let's get back to these he matchups and this time we'll go to the defensive side of the ball and the same way the 49ers want to establish the run game on offense and really dictate the tempo win the time of possession and kind of get Miami Dolphins you know add a sorts on defense you got to slow down the Miami Dolphins rushing attack and that starts with the Von A.

14:47And that's going to be one of the keys I mean he is an explosive player that has the ability to take it to the house every single time and it's not just him but they got Jalen right go at a big explosive run against Las Vegas last week they got all he Gordon they've got talent and the running back position but let's focus on a chain and Malik Willis because I think that this is going to be the center part in the center focus of this Miami Dolphins offense this week is going to try to influence the 49ers defensive line and linebackers and manipulate them to be able to get some good looks both in the run game and in the passing game and what I'm talking about is you've got a situation where you got a very mobile quarterback. But what you do is you run some read option looks and you try to freeze that defensive end on the backside and create an extra run lane for a chain and if that defensive end Nick Bosa crashes down the line of scrimmage Malik Willis pulls and runs around the outside now you've got options right you can make it just a direct read option run play you could also have that same exact look and then if he you know collapses you got RPO out of that or you can just roll him out to the right or to the left depending on what you're doing on the play most of

15:58time you want to roll your right handed quarterback to the right and then you look for some sort of a pass play there some sort of a flood something like that where it gets him out of the pocket and why is it significant to get him out of the pocket they gave up five sacks last week to the Las Vegas Raiders Malik Willis was holding on to the football too long when he was in the pocket he would sit sit sit sit and then the pocket would collapse and if he couldn't escape he got sacks so they want to get this run game going they need to get a chain going and last week the Miami Dolphins only had 79 yards on the ground rushing the football that was a staple when Mike McDaniel was the head coach was rushing the football when they ran the ball well they won. Jeff Hathley is a defensive minded head coach he wants the Dolphins to be able to run the ball and they know staying on the field is going to be significant you slowing down the 49ers offense and they want to keep the 49ers offense on the sideline and where this defense down that is their method to win this game a lot of it is getting the 49ers to chase Malik Willis and historically and Jeff Hathley was here for it in 2017 the 49ers have struggled with the ball.

17:08The 49ers have added so much help when it comes to her mellow height and jaden dougger and athleticism at safety with a guy like marquee seagull these guys can run their fast this defense looks a lot different than in years past even when you look up front at these defensive lineman they can move a little bit so you don't have to worry about quarterbacks just outrunning everyone now Malik Willis he definitely does a lot more on the ground with his legs then a lot of quarterbacks. Then a lot of quarterbacks so this is going to be one of the methods so they want to get that outside zone game going they want to be able to get a chain outside where he's dominant I think there's going to be some looks where they're trying to run on the inside and they're trying to build for that you just look at their draft picks over the last couple years and they're trying to get bigger and better on the inside this year they drafted Kate and proctor at Alabama this dude is a monster so he's going to be able to kind of move some people up front that's going to be interesting matchup where he struggles a little bit later on the game. So I think he's going to be able to get a little quickness that's going to be his bug a boo when it comes to pass rush downs where also diggy's you as lateral quickness is going to give him fits Keon white moving inside is going to give him fits and also stunts could be a problem for Kate and proctor but as far as mushing getting movement up front I think Kate and proctor's going to do a good job and then on the other side Jonas Savahi Nia who they drafted a couple years ago at Arizona he is the right guard I like him a lot I think Jonas Savahi Nia is a very good interior offensive lineman so I think they got a lot of

18:37good interior core and so they might look at opportunities to get a push up front against this 49ers defense and run the ball so I think they want to pressure the outsides with the zone re look and the read option and I think they are going to take some opportunities on the inside trying to run behind Kate and proctor and Jonas Savahi Nia as he if they can't get some movement so Fred Warner drag green law jaden dugger they're going to have to step up and really take on some of these extra blockers and try to withstand and put a stone wall there to come up and get a good shot. It's not like this run game going because if it gets going that's going to open everything up from Oleque was then he's got the play action past he's got opportunities to get outside the pocket run some of these boots where he's got the option to pass or run but that's going to be one of the key factors is this run game can the 49ers slow down the dolphins run game if the dolphins get under 100 yards rushing in this game the 49ers win I think that's just that's how simple it could end up being so I think that's going to be one of the key factors is watching that as

19:37taking with defense the 49ers when they're rushing Malik Willis they can't go for broke and what do I mean well with Matthew Stafford he's not very mobile in the pocket he doesn't move around a lot he's got a little bit of movement but you don't have to worry about him running he's not going to outrun anyone to the sideline and so you can get out of your lanes the 49ers run a ton of stunts last week getting after Matthew Stafford which is very good to do right get after him make things happen and and cause Matthew Stafford to get off the point and feel uncomfortable with Malik Willis you can't do the same thing you want him to feel uncomfortable but you can't allow there to be any run lanes and so you have to have past rush lane integrity which means it's more important this week for the 49ers to stay in their lanes and let things break down around him and then get home and that's what the Raiders did last week a lot is they would allow things to break down will equals to hold the ball for four or five seconds and then they would finally get home I think that's more of the name of the game this week it's not that you don't have to

20:37rush but you just don't want to get too far outfield if you're a defensive and you don't want to go to the four or five yards upfield where it allows him to go up in and out those are bad plays where he can use his legs to extend drives and kind of break your back as a defense especially on third and long so those are going to be things to watch that means those interior defensive lineman they've got to be a little bit more consistent getting a field as this pocket has got to get a push from the middle and then the outsides got to collapse on top of him. And you can't allow him to escape inside or outside so they're going to have to do that I do believe that means that we're he more is going to bring an extra russia a lot of time so I think that you're going to get five man looks up front and I think they're going to bring five at times may not be the fifth guy they have on the line of scrimmages he can kind of zone blitz and move guys around but I do expect a lot more five man pressures this week against Malik Willis then you got last week versus Matthew staff Matthew Stafford is golden versus a

21:37blitz normally now the 49 did get to him a little bit last week which was phenomenal but Malik Willis the different cat you bring a fifth guy makes it a little bit easier to him him up plus if you're bringing an athletic mobile guy off the edge let's say you're rushing where Melo White from one side and you blitz jaden dugger from the other or uptanced out you have the necessary speed to be able to kind of withstand him getting outside the pocket or getting some movement around. And so it's nice to send one of those more athletic guys off the edge so I look for the 49ers to bring five man pressures I think at times they might even over blow six man make him read danger extremely fast last week you wanted Matthew Stafford to have to hold on the ball this week you want. Malik Willis to hold on the ball sometimes and sometimes you want him to not be able to process you just want him to have to feel like yes to get out of there as quickly as possible so this is going to be kind of a cat and mouse game. On offense I like the 49ers wide receivers burst the young dolphins defensive backs and you look at that defensive back room and I talked about the free safety Michael tap I talked about the nickel back Chris Johnson and last week it was a very formidable group that they win against with the Los Angeles Rams they had paid a lot of money to bring in corner back our cornerbacks to help.

25:15Take on some of these wide receivers in the league they're really hoping that back in was going to do well the 49ers wide receivers had tremendous success all that money that they paid to guys like Trent McDuffy and then the 49ers had three wide receivers come away with touchdowns Mike Evans. Hebo Samuel and DeMarcus Robinson and it was three different ways fade pass a deep vertical pass to Marcus Robinson and a scramble drill where he both found some space for the touchdown and the 49ers really expose the secondary of the Los Angeles Rams and the method that Chris Hula was employing now Jeff Hathley is a very smart coach I guarantee he saw that and he's like okay we've got to make sure that we take these guys on we've got to limit the amount of space that they have. But I think the 49ers wide receivers are going to continue to have a good opportunity in this game because I think that the 49ers they know when you get the run game going they like to work the passing game through Christian McCaffrey who you know is really good and also through George Kittle the tide and they like to do that when they're running their play action Brock party feels comfortable going over the middle to those guys in certain key situations and so I think that you're looking at a situation where Mike Evans is really good.

26:30There's a matchup problem you know verse the corner backs you got Jude you brands out there you've got Jason Marshall and they Chris Johnson in the slot the 49ers have a distinct advantage of wide receiver verse corner backs for the Miami dolphins and they're going to have to just get into these situations where they take advantage of them and I think they can and that's one of the matches I'm looking at them like okay 49ers top three wide receivers burst the secondary of the Miami dolphins I like it in favor of the 49ers. And I feel like if the 49ers get that run game going earlier that we talked about this passing game is really going to take off and there could be some really big explosive plays for Mike Evans and the Marcus Robinson if they leave that deep crosser open for D. Bo I'm telling you house call is on the horizon for the 49ers so I really like that matchup for the four years and it hasn't been that often over the last couple years and we've said you know what I love the 49ers wide receiver matchups burst the team they're going to play that is the difference between.

27:30The 2026 49ers roster and the 2025 2024 49ers roster where this one feels like they can win consistently because they have some dudes that can make some place and I was talking about the running backs and tied ends and I think Christian McAfry against Jordan Brooks Willie gay and Jacob Rodriguez the linebackers for the Miami dolphins is a huge advantage for the 49ers and we know Klon Blacks going to run the ball. But there's going to be some third down situations there's going to be some some key first down situation even red zone opportunities where you're going to get Christian McAfry in some key situations where he can play against those linebackers and you watch last week what coach Kubiak of the Vegas Raiders did with action gentie and he was able to take advantage of the Las Vegas Raiders defense pretty extensively he was getting some isolated matchups of gentie on these linebackers and gentie was delivering. And I love action gentie but he's not the wide receiver type that Christian McAfry is Christian McAfry is a better pass catcher is a better route runner and so I think that this is a distinct advantage for the 49ers I mean they've win against Jordan Brooks before they know I mean Calcian and is scheme up to work him before Jacob Rodriguez is really good but if there's an area that he's not as good at as a linebacker especially now it would be coverage isolating him is a good idea and then Willie gay is the the Sam linebacker.

28:55Well if the Miami dolphins are going to go away from what the Rams did Rams ran nickel the entire time even when the 49ers were in 21 and 12 personnel which are big personnel groupings then it'll be a nickel corner out there and that sometimes helps you match up with McAfry and Kettle but are you going to be able to stop the run that way if he goes big that means Willie Gays on the field is the same linebacker and then you've got some more matchup problems as Calcian and is the best in the business as far as formationally with the scheme up to the Maddox of getting motion and getting one-on-one match if that he likes for his guys so I like Christian McAfry versus Jordan Brooks Willie Gays and Jacob Rodriguez in the passing game so you got the running game K-Long Black sprinkle in some Christian McAfry a little dose a little sprinkle of Debo Samuel and then in the passing game you know Christian McAfry versus linebackers I think is really nice for the 49ers and the wide receivers first the young defensive backs for the Miami dolphins and then the last one which is on defense.

29:55And before I go to special teams the last one on defense is Nick Bosa versus everybody and the reason I said Nick Bosa versus everybody is I don't think Nick Bosa this week just rushes from his left defensive in spot and we saw get moved around a lot last last week I think that continues and and maybe even is uh more usage from him in different spots I brought up the the the offensive line you got Patrick Paul he's big and long but I think there's an opportunity for Bosa to beat him more around the outside he's the left tackle. Caden Proctor I talked about the lateral quickness having him with stunts or even matchup with Nick Bosa advantage Nick Bosa Aaron Brewer at center I don't think we'll see too many matchups but then on the other side Jonas Savahi night he is a good mover a little bit more of a lateral mover than Caden Proctor so I think that would be a fun matchup at Austin Jackson I think the pointers are going to want to get Nick Bosa on Austin Jackson a lot of snaps in this game and I think the second most snaps that he want to get him especially on third and long.

30:55We'll be against Caden Proctor I think that those are opportunities when you look at Nick Bosa's abilities and I think they're going to want to move him all over the place number one if you move them all over the recognition from a week will have to pay attention to where he's coming from could free up some things for other guys but also you know some stunts some movement up front where you fill it in with the blitz whether that's Nick Bosa and then Fred Warner showing an A gap blitz or up in stout a marquee see will come in from the edge or Jaden Dugger there's going to be a lot of options for him to do that. I think that's for the 49ers but I love moving Nick Bosa all around this week and getting opportunities and not just rushing him from the outside because it's a mobile quarterback getting pressure up the middle is extremely important getting a pass rush from the outside that isn't going too fast is fine so you might see times this week where you see the the quicker more athletic defensive ins inside at times and you see the kind of the guys who are more lumbars that are going to kind of hold their ground sometimes.

So I think Nick Bosa versus everyone this week is going to be extremely fun as we're he more continues to move Nick Bosa around and I think Nick Bosa is going to have some opportunities.
