2:15It's 49ers cut back podcast time. Welcome to the show everyone. I'm to talk about 49ers. What are the things that they did? How did they run the ball? How did they throw the ball? How did they execute on defense? Where they give you the ball? I'm going to talk about the ball. I'm going to talk about the ball. What are the things that they did? How did they run the ball? How did they throw the ball? How did they execute on defense? Where they giving up plays on the ground? Where they giving it up through the air? What are the strengths and weaknesses depicted by the numbers? Of course, these two teams got off to very different starts. The San Francisco 49ers got a big win in Australia against the Los Angeles Rams. Where the Miami Dolphins suffered a defeat and at the hands of Las Vegas Raiders.

3:20You've got two teams coming out of two week one matchups in different circumstances. You got a new coach and Jeff Hathley for the Miami Dolphins. You got a new quarterback and Malik Willis. You've got a change in what is happening there in that organization. You look at the 49ers and they're looking for an opportunity to push for a six-lam party. And with that comes a lot of a lot of work and a lot of effort and the 49ers improved in a lot of areas in this last game. And of course we did the tail of the tape going off of what happened in 2025. So all those numbers were fresh and to see the 49ers completely handle things on the ground and also be so efficient in both offense defense and special teams. They leave week one as the best team in DVOA in the entire league. They were the fifth best offense, the fourth best defense and the sixth best special teams unit. That's really impressive for this football team. For Miami, they're down at the bottom and with that it's kind of the issue with this football team.

4:20How good are they actually going to be this season? Now, I think the Miami Dolphins are going to figure it out because Jeff Hathley is a good coach. But when are they going to fill it out? When is this offense, this defense and special teams going to kind of figure things out and start playing better? That's going to be one of the keys for the 49ers are hoping is that it's not going to be this week against them. And they would have a lot of excuses as to why that happened, right? They could have jet lag and they could be not feeling right. But when you have a home opener in Santa Clara in a week two after a big win, a divisional win, you can't come in and lay egg against the Miami Dolphins in this matchup. So we know that running quarterbacks give the 49ers some issues at times. Malik Willis has that ability. They have really good speed with Devon A. Chane and a lot of young wide receivers that can make things happen on the outside. So that's what we're going to do in this one. We're going to go through the numbers. We're going to look at the 49ers how they won against the Los Angeles Rams. We're going to look at the Miami Dolphins and what they did well and what they didn't do well against the Las Vegas Raiders as we kind of kick this thing off and get started on 49ers versus Miami Dolphins this week.

So I like to start real simple every single time with the record and the record illustrates a little bit early on, but not a lot. And these two teams are going to go through the ebbs and flows of this season. Going to be a roller coaster ride for the San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins before all is said and done. And for somebody it's going to be January football and February football both these teams are hoping that that's going to be them. So when you look at it right now record 1 to 0. You're only as good as your last game. So for the 49ers there's a lot of a lot of energy behind them right a lot of hype kind of getting here behind the 49ers right now. They've got to make sure they capitalize they have two winnable football games coming up against the Miami Dolphins and the Arizona Cardinals.

6:31And they need to make sure that they win this football game against Miami. This is not a game you can drop. This is a very winnable game against a coach that you know his defense well. He was in your room with Robert Sullin 2017. He also was with the green Bay Packers and Matt Laflore. So you've seen Jeff Hathley's defense before. You also just watch Clay Cooobie are sorry Clint Cooobie acts offense go against this team. So very similar offense they know what the ins and outs are. Should give the four years a good idea but the Miami Dolphins oh and one right now. So get points per game that these offenses are scoring 49ers go for 27 points in that game for Los Angeles Rams which was extremely impressive considering the Rams defense was supposed to be so good. And they invested so much in the secondary with Trent McDuffy and others that Miles Garrett along with defensive line. And the 49ers really should have put up more points. They had the misfield goal by Eddie Pignaro but they got conservative in the fourth quarter and didn't continue to try to drive to score touchdowns.

7:35They wanted to get out of Australia with a win. They wanted to pull some of their guys to make sure they stay healthy. I'm all for that. It's not about piling on points even though sometimes it's really nice to kind of go for it. That wasn't the time to do it in week one. And so the 49ers have 27 points but that offense could easily scored a lot more points against a Rams defense that's probably going to be you know half halfway up the league at least once Miles Garrett and Aaron Donald are playing together. I think that they're going to be really good. So 49ers offense did a really good job and for Miami it was tough sledding. They had a hard time getting things going. They struggled on third down. There are some things that they need to get better at and we're going to reveal all that in this episode but. Dolphins putting up 13 points 49ers only gave up seven last week to the Rams. This is part of the reason that I think that you know the Vegas right now is seeing this as a low scoring game. I don't think they see a lot coming from the Miami offense but like I said Malik Willis he can he can move around in the pocket. He could be dangerous and then you've got the fact that you've got Devon Hane as well.

8:36Devon Hane can definitely get after it so he's going to be interesting along the way now let's talk about injuries and. You know for the 49ers the 49ers do have injuries and concerns at the position for the Miami Dolphins it's not as bad but they did this week of course put Kyle Lewis on IR in fact today. So Kyle Lewis is on IR so he will not be planning against the 49ers they thought maybe a few weeks but it looks like it's going to be at least a month. And for the 49ers they officially put John Stribling on IR as of time recording no news on Jake Tungus but that could be an expectation for him as well as they've promoted. Brighton Willis to the active roster and of course for the 49ers cadarro Hodge already to the active roster and we'll see what they do as far as defensive line when they create potentially another roster spot by Jake Tungus going on IR Alfred Collins on IR and Sam Boko want to all on IR for the San Francisco 49ers so not big injuries for each team you know the 49ers I mean you know two of those guys are impactful would have been you know starters for this football team and Alfred Collins into John Stribling Stribling started last week.

9:40Young players that they were looking to count on for Alfred Collins seasons over for stripling he could come back at some point and for the Miami Dolphins pretty much they're healthy they're young and they're healthy so that's good news for the Miami Dolphins is they're going to have to be healthy to go against the San Francisco 49ers and this offense that can definitely put up points and you see it right here offensive yards per game 49ers going at 379 yards on off the pitch. They're going to be able to get a lot of confidence on offense and they moved the ball pretty effectively against the Rams including a 99 yard touchdown drive that was just phenomenal to see and for Miami you see 259 yards around that 250 mark is a very anemic offense so they've got to they've got to get it together whether that's on the ground or through the air they were pretty efficient on the ground but they struggled when it came to the passing attack and they're going to go against the 49ers defense that gave up yards out but they can give up points and created turnover so this is going to be one of those keys and when you look at overall yards it doesn't matter in the grand scheme except ball control a lot of times this plays a big part in time of possession if you can move the sticks and you can rack up a lot of yards and of course we talk about this every single year you want to get like 250 yards through the air about 150 yards on the ground a perfect 400 yards is usually a good offensive output for your football team and then you look at the rest yards per game 49ers go for 174 yards against the Los Angeles Rams it was a

11:09really impressive 5.9 yards per carry 49ers also lead the league in yards before contact at 2.6 yards but it was a very impressive run game for the 49ers in week one against Los Angeles and you see the dolphins even though they have Devon Hain that rushing attack really didn't get going for them and you got a situation we're going to talk about that rush defense it wasn't great either so you're getting some matchup issues already were the 49ers offense running the football against a dolphins defense is struggled to stop it will talk about that a little bit more down the road but situation where you can see the 49ers dominated on the ground which means they won the time of possession which means they stayed ahead of the sticks and for the Miami dolphins that didn't happen offensively they struggled pretty very hard to get in that game against Las Vegas Raiders also the past yards through the air the 49ers go for 205 and you know that's not big numbers but when you're rushing the ball for 174 yards it kind of works out and for the Miami Dolphins 185

12:13it's it's not great and I think when you look at the weaknesses of this dolphins offense I think it's going to take some time for them to gel and kind of get together. I'm like well so it's first time. You know playing quarter back for the Miami dolphins new system getting accustomed to new weapons including wide receivers offensive line running back. So there's going to be some growing pains for that offense and so 49ers. Definitely can take advantage of it and you look at the 49ers offense to the air and it was very efficient and effective you had the explosive play to the Marcus Robinson but pretty much everything else was you know right where it should be intermediate to short take with the defense was giving with those two I safety looks rock party getting the ball out on time when you had to escape and create he did so I think you look at the offenses and they're in two different entirely different places with the 49ers offense looked in sync and on time and the Miami Dolphins. Did it look in sync and on time they look herkey jerky so that's something that they're going to have to continue to get better at now when you look at the two quarterbacks there is a big difference between the two you look at the 49ers block party and he was I mean just completing it's such a high rate like I said very effective and efficient 73.5% completion percentage but for Malik Willis he's only at 55% for the game so Malik will is struggling a little bit you know get those things done he did have 220 yards of the air of course.

13:35He lost a lot of yards when it came to sacks we'll talk about that to three touchdowns for Brock party to just you know no touchdowns from Malik Willis both both players through an interception Brock party really wants that one back and then you look at the sacks Malik Willis is supposed to be the more mobile guy between the two but Brock pretty very effective in scrambling and getting away and he did a little bit in this game but it's offensive line played pretty pretty well as well Dolphins 5 sacks I mean this is something that desperately they need to get better at this week if the 49ers start you know the number one pressure rate in the NFL at 41% of dropback the 49ers got pressure if they can turn those pressure numbers into sacks this week against Malik Willis who holds the ball a lot longer than Matthew Stafford there could be a lot of negative plays and the 49ers getting off the field pretty effectively as you get to 30 long the 49ers go to their dime package is going to be extremely hard you get first downs for the Miami Dolphins and then you look at the quarterback rating rock pretty with the big time numbers 105.6 and then from Malik Willis a very stagnant you know number in the 60 so this is something they definitely got to get better at when you're talking about this football team but you know the the quarterbacks you know when you talked about shiny Malik Willis was a lot better last year playing for the green.

14:53And then he was in his week one debut with for the Miami Dolphins and before we talk about third down percentage I want to talk to you guys about Fanduult tonight. Actually no tomorrow in ahead of myself tomorrow the Detroit Lions played the Buffalo Bills and the bills are going at 4.5 point favorite right now that's going at minus 115 the Detroit Lions at as the underdog at plus 4.5 going at minus 105 the over under and what they're expecting to be a big time showdown as far as I'm going to play. And then the offense the over under going at 54 and half the over moving at minus 114 the under going at minus 106 of course they got cool player props same game parlay's all available now maybe you just want to wait and bet on the 49ers game they are a big favorite include the biggest favorites of the week going at minus 13.5 and the only way to get the best of Miami Dolphins nearly a two touchdown advantage according to Fanduult the over under for that game going at 45 and a half the over at minus 110 the under at minus 110 is what I was saying they don't expect.

15:57The dolphins to score a whole lot of points those are the third down conversion percentage 49ers of course last year the number one third down offense in the NFL converting at 49.8%. Well they get off to a good start in week one was it perfect for the 49ers when they want some of those back Christian McCaffrey drop Mike Evans drop maybe Brock pretty didn't quite put it right where he wanted those were two conversions they wanted back they could have elevated this number even more but they're really excited about 58% of the time converting on third down that's a really good number for Jeff athlete's group just 20% they they struggled they had negative plays then they couldn't overcome those negative plays and get first downs and this is what you look at. When you're talking about a team that played well and a team that didn't play well Miami Dolphins got to be better on third down if they are going to have success against the San Francisco 49ers for the 49ers stopping that Miami Dolphins team and getting off the field is going to be huge three and outs producing good field position could be very important for this 49ers football team and you look at the third down conversion rate allowed 49ers only allowed third down conversions from the Rams there were two of nine at 22% I mean that's next level this is a league.

17:06Category when you're talking third down conversion rate now this number is going to elevate week to week this is going to change but if you can get anywhere near 30 to 32% you're an elite defense getting off the field on third down so that's where the 49ers want to be small sample size but against probably one of the best offenses in the NFL in the Los Angeles Rams a good start they need to continue that against the Miami Dolphins and keep this number extremely low and the dolphins didn't do good on third down so four years to make sure they don't allow Malik Willis and Devon A. Chained to make plays on third down they need to get off the field and for the dolphins if there's a nice bright spot it's the fact that they did good on third down against the Las Vegas Raiders only given up conversions at 38% that's a good number for coach Jeff Halfley's group to kind of build off of so you look at a situation where the dolphins are better on defense and they aren't offense and that's something that a lot of times that happens defense is usually get it together a little bit sooner than offenses there's less moving parts. You're you're playing more on instinct and so things are easier to pick up so you see right here they are better on third down so be a really good 49ers red zone offense against a decent dolphins red zone defense I mean it's pretty good and then we'll see how that works out you know kind of where the rubber meets the road between these two teams but something that's definitely interesting for this matchup and then the red zone offense and the 49ers were very good in the red zone they had one they really want back where they are.

18:35They kicked the field goal in that opening drive and they just couldn't get it in George Kittle getting down to the one yard line but not quite able to finish it off 49ers still at 66% of course I've predicted the 49ers are going to be a 70% conversion rate in the red zone for touchdowns this season and I think that'll be number one in the league. Right now there's teams that of course are 100% they never got stopped I think once things kind of shake out 49ers are going to be top five in this category follow Mike Evans could do we've seen what. The 49ers can do in the red zone with some of the screens we've seen Christian McCaffrey run in the fact the 49ers were running the football better means this red zone offense is going to get better and better and how dangerous does Mike Evans make you when they you go one on one they can just go and throw it up to Mike Evans and so. Teams are going to have to make sure they give a little help on Evans which means it weakens the box allows the 49ers to run open some opportunities for guys like D. Bo say I'm going to Marcus Rob is a Christian McCaffrey in George Kittle and then there's always blocks legs as well so those are things to take into effect and you look at the dolphins and they really struggled inside the red zone couldn't convert consistently their bad on third down they weren't good in the red zone and so this is something that the 49ers need to take advantage of touchdowns to field goals you're going to win games and the 49ers can be a very effective.

19:49Red zone team this year got off to a good start not a great start but I expect the 49ers to make that number even better this week and even look at the red zone defense and the dolphins were giving up touchdowns at 75% that's not good red zone defense that's a little bit shocking considering they played a lot better on third down only given up conversion at 38% but they were giving it up in the red zone and touchdowns and this is what the 49ers want to capitalize on a 66% rate on offense against a 75% defense defense defense defense. They gave it up opportunity for the 49ers for lots of points and for the 49ers red zone defense it was good one of three or the the Rams and there are really good red zone offense last year they win at 64% 49ers held them to 33% in this football game so you see that the 49ers are playing well in short yarded situations they're getting off the field on third down and they're forcing field goals inside the red zone and for the Rams.

20:49They were going for down and they were playing from behind so they didn't even get those field goals for the 49ers were able to hold them to just seven points per game and are seven points in that game which was number one in the NFL 49ers holding a Rams team that averaged 30.5 yards per game last year and returned all 11 starters on offense to just seven so we're going to find out you know if it was jet lag what it was I think a lot of it was 49ers scheme you look at what we're going to do is we're going to do that. He more is dead is not been breaking down the all 22 film and it's over on patriots the coaches tape available on patreon I got the first half offense and defense up going to be putting up the second half offense and defense pretty soon those are available full breakdowns of every single play you guys can check that out on 49ers cut back slash patreon but you seen the good plan from her he more and I think he's going to have a good plan for the Miami dolphins as well and I expect the Miami dolphins scoring output to be a little bit lower.

21:49You can see the points of the dolphins gave up they gave up 27 what the 49ers scored last week it gets a very good Rams defense dolphins allowed to the Las Vegas Raiders Cursons and that new offense and that offense looked a lot better than has in the past I wouldn't say it's as explosive as the 49ers offense it doesn't have the weapons at the 49ers have and so I think that you look at the numbers right now and you're expecting the 49ers score points and the Miami dolphins just it's a struggle scoring points in this football game. Look at the yards per game that they allowed both of these teams allowed 290 yards of offense which isn't terrible you would love to be around 275 so both these teams didn't give up a lot of yards a lot of success in the that category but part of the problem is you know taking advantage of red zone opportunities and third downs that definitely wasn't good for the Miami dolphins red zone offense when they're scoring at that rate you know scoring a 75% of the time touchdowns you're you're going to struggle you got to be able to finish drive so 290 yards could be better but it's not that bad Chevy is called the heartbeat of America for a reason with SUVs made to move with your rhythm the versatile equinox tackles your entire day the

25:21and in stopping the opposing team when it came through through the air and past yards uh but some of that is because the rush yards are not great and you can see right here the Miami dolphins gave up 130 yards on the ground which isn't a tremendous number that's that's getting lit up and the 49 of the game was went for 175 last week and so I think you got a situation where the Miami dolphins rush defense is not very good and you got a 49ers offense that's going to be dedicated to the run and looking for K long black Christian McCaffery and T both Samuel to kind of gouge this Miami dolphins defense this is going to be one of the matchups 49ers rushing attack against the dolphins rush defense and the four years have a distinct advantage there now last week the Las Vegas Raiders played stout against the Miami dolphins rushing attack now it's only 74 yards 49ers defense though gave up 122 yards on the ground to Kyrie Williams and Blake Korum so this is something the four years have to have a point of emphasis on is slowing down that run game of the Miami dolphins don't let the Von H

26:24and get going if you do well then that's going to allow Malik Willis and others to get comfortable in this offense and I think this offense can actually take a step forward if the 49ers stop them on early downs they give up five sacks last week you all have an opportunity to get after the quarterback Nick Bosa you know could get his first sack Oh say diggy Zua who led the team in pressures last week he could get on the board as well with some sack so I think that this is going to be something to watch and Miami stopped the 49ers rushing attack I don't think so but the question is can the 49ers slow down to Von H and can they play better than this they need to get that number of rush yards allowed under a hundred if they are going to be a consistent defense this year and of course you know if you can get ahead on teams and you can turn them into a pass happy team that'll be great that's one way to kind of negate a rushing attack is get ahead early so get the turnovers the 49ers gave one away that was Brock Purti you know throwing an interception I know he wants that interception back it wasn't a great look for him and you know he just he just threw in a coverage and he should have thrown it to K-Long Black underneath

27:24he did not he made a mistake one turnover that's okay so he's got to move on from that but the good news is the 49ers won the turnover battle against the loss angiolis rams and whenever you win the turnover battle you have a good chance to win right there's certain things metrics that you need to win third down conversion rate red zone effectiveness scoring touchdowns when it comes to a time of possession and then the takeaways turnovers and give away so you see this right here the Miami Dolphins had two turnovers last week one interception one fumble so you got a situation where you you want to keep it under one turnover per game uh that you give up for the dolphins they didn't play great football that's part of the reason they got scored on more than they should have is they had turnovers so a two to one ratio there was means opportunities because the 49ers had two takeaways last week and so the Miami Dolphins so dolphins are energetic they flow around they're looking to make plays on the football and they do sometimes get the ball so 49ers are going to have to make sure they take advantage of not turning over the ball

28:25and giveaways and take advantage of an offense with the Miami Dolphins that will take it away and we'll put it into harm's way they need to get the football on their hand or on on their side and have some of those momentum swings for this football team you look at the turnover differential 49ers at plus one which is a big difference from last year where the 49ers were minus 11 and still went 12 and five and made the playoffs you need to be in the plus category if you're in the plus category when it comes to turn over differential and in halfway through the year your plus 10 year double digits you were going to be a very effective football team right now the dolphins you see they forced two turnovers they gave away two turnovers at zero it's not bad so what you want to have is you want to have less than one give away per game and you want to have more than one take away per game that's kind of how the ratio wants to work so next week the 49ers they want to be plus two turnovers at least of course if you can get a bigger number well then you have a chance to make even a bigger headway when it comes to winning these football games then you look at the

29:28special teams and I want to put up the DVOA for this because the 49ers for the last couple years I've had a point of emphasis on special teams and I think they did before but I don't think they ever had the right coach and I think now with Brent Boyer and the way that he goes about coaching special teams not only do they add the right players and I think that he's a big reason why he has great conversations with the front office of the 49ers and get the players that the 49ers need on special teams all you have to do is look at a guy like cadero hoj who's been added to the active roster and make no mistake cadero hoj is an okay receiver he can do the job and I have no problems with him being up there he's going to be active there's a chance to order and walk into his not but his special teams is great saran neal special teams is great Luke Ferrell special teams great Luke Gifford didn't play great on special teams this week but he's a great special teams player they bring back Dibo Samuel for special teams the 49ers have invested in special teams and complimentary footballs a real thing being good on offense defense and special teams that'll make you the best team and

30:31all you have to do is go back to the hardball days and that 2011 football team the complimentary football that special teams that really helped that team be a lot better than they would have and good great defense great special teams offense wasn't the most effective but they were still in every single game and they won a lot of games and probably should have went to the Super Bowl maybe should have won that we know that there was some unfortunate events that happened but that's what happens we have complimentary football and the 49ers are playing that right now fifth best offense DVOA or the best defense DVOA sixth best special teams DVOA you're going to play that high you're going to be the number one DVOA team and probably the number one team in the league so 49ers right now all three phases really clicking for this football team and then you look at the Miami Dolphins the 27th best DVOA on special teams we talked about the ineffectiveness of the offense the struggles on defense even though the defense wasn't as bad as the offense you know the game of 27 points and then the special teams as well so 49ers can have an advantage in special teams which
