We always do a show on Labor Day because we're here for you Kansas City and we know how big of a time of the year this is when we just had the first game of all three of our major conference college football programs. I don't want to short-shrift the the other universities in town that are in the area that play. BKU K. State, Mizzou all had their first games. We got the border war between Kansas and Missouri coming up on Friday and we've got the NFL season kicking off this week as well so we've a lot to talk about and a guy that's so dedicated

1:04that here he is on a Labor Day still making his weekly appearance on the show. The one-in-one Scott Carroll Scott how are you brother. What's up guys. Thanks for having me on. You're decked out in a chief's hat. You know one week away baby. You in American flag. In American flag. How you feel feeling good about chief season starting off. Man it's I feel good. I'm optimistic for shirts. It's a fresh start but I do have concerns obviously that I don't want to you know be the dead horse with this whole Josh Simmons thing but yeah just concerns because it's a it's a big deal because this team could be so much better. He's a is the integral part of what they could could achieve but yeah injuries happen so you got to keep moving forward and next man up but I think I'm excited because I got some good young talent and I'm excited to see some of these these newer players and what they can bring. Not understanding how plans today. I do I do I'm gonna be out at the K cheering on the Royals today. One of our friends and she's she's running in the hot dog race. I know a lot of people maybe if you're listening out there have

2:06always dreamed of doing the hot dog race. Yeah she she's gonna get to do it and and run and compete as as catch up. Oh catch up. Yeah so I I don't want to brag about my athletic achievements here but I but I will you're talking to a guy who is 2 and 0 lifetime in the hot dog race at Kaufman Stadium. Nice. The first time I was a chief accused of cheating it was 8 10 day at the K that was back when we had the Royals rights here and I was racing against Doug Stewart who at the time was on the program was Seren Petro and Dave Bortchert who now works at the Keynes City Sports Commission and and he was representing the midday and I was representing the morning show and they gave

3:08us instructions beforehand very explicitly that we were not to dive that was one of the big rules. Yeah don't dive at the finish line because these hot dog costumes are expensive and they get damaged easily when you when you hit that you know the the warning track crushed brick whatever that stuff is the red clay and so no diving now when they had us put on the costumes first of all Dave and Doug both a lot taller than me which helps a lot because that hot dog outfit like went all the way down toward my knees and so you like you lose range of motion when it comes to trying to run and also they they they put in these big floppy shoes right and I'm a guy a little guy smaller feet and so but you keep your shoes on though just inside of those things. Yeah I think no no no you win with socks yeah you win you win socks took your shoes off and I said is

4:10there a rule against the shoes coming off and they said well we don't encourage you to take the shoes off but if they happen to come off while you're running there's not like a rule against that so we come out of the gates and I'm struggling because this hot dog costume is just a little too big for the little guy here and so it's like my knees are knocking the costume up to the to the little hole that's cut out you can't see out of it and I'm having to yank that thing down while trying to run and I'm falling behind the other two and as I come around the corner my shoes happened to come off okay and I flew right past them after that and won the race and they accused me of cheating because they said I kicked my shoes off and you know in my opinion the rules were clearly stated don't die I didn't die the shoes just happened to come off and there

5:14was no rule against that they pretty big and floppy they were they were they absolutely were hindrance yeah I mean I flew past those two guys once the shoes came off so I'm not giving your friend any maybe the rules have changed she might want to check on that but if she finds herself in a position where she's falling behind and her shoes happen to come off that could that could give you yeah because it was tough for you to see too probably right yeah oh yeah it's bouncing up in your eyes yeah no yeah yeah yeah um so yeah two and oh man you know so what about the second race second race was sporting Kansas City day at the K this is I'm sure fascinating to the audience but it is an interesting story the guy that was the in-house center so it was me Sam McDowell of the Kansas City star who at the time was the beat rider covering sporting Kansas city right and the guy who was the in-house like MC host of of everything Hartzel Gray who was a former track athlete I believe at UMKC so he had been

6:17like a sprinter I was in my forties and he was in his 20s and I won the race day now I might have been buying beers for him the looping him up for the for the six innings and and soup and his head up telling him hey you know because he was talking a lot of trash he was gonna win yeah hey you know it's not really even about winning dude you got to win by a lot because you're in your 20s and you're a track athlete you're run against an old man here if you don't win by a lot people are gonna be really disappointed like you need to showboat a little bit you know you need to make make this a scene and I just kept you know getting him you know just serving him you know and he had about a 20 step lead on me uh then shoes came off he fell on his face the finish line and I blew right past him he and I can see it too because I'm like

7:17it's right out of the gate I mean he just like pulled away from me and Sam you know and I thought you know what I'm just gonna keep running you never know what's gonna happen in life just keep running and I'm trying to chase him down and I can see about about 50 yards or so from the finish line he's starting to he's getting top heavy and he's starting to get out over his ski is a little bit and he's losing his balance and I mean boom boom boom and wham I mean he went face first right in front of the finish line and I cruised past him hit the finish line and hit the Usain Bolt pose and went to and oh well done my hot dog career thanks I'm not only did he win he fell down and ruined the suit like yeah exactly exactly so bad day for him good day for me so there's a lesson in life though there is you know you just got to keep running sometimes you never know what's gonna happen keep the knees up yeah yeah so all right so you got the Royals game tonight we're gonna we're gonna we'll talk a little Royals here in a little bit but I want to start because you know before I left this show on a full-time

8:24capacity the name of the show was the border patrol because Stephen was a Kansas guy I mean I'm a Missouri guy and I was a Kansas guy and we sat across from here and we found a way to be friends through a rivalry that that dates back to the Civil War even predates that right the rivalry doesn't exist the way that it once did because of the conference split up yep but they're playing again they did it last year in football and they're doing it again coming up on Friday when I when I wrote this book about the history of soccer in Kansas City the you know perfect pitch if you want to read it I dove really deeply at least for me I took a deep dive into the history of the town and what makes Kansas City a unique place and I would say that that's one of the biggest shames to me about conference Armageddon is that in many ways the rivalry between Kansas

9:31University and Missouri is one of the best ways to explain what makes this city a unique place because there are other cities that that are split by rivalries but I'm trying to think of a major metropolitan area that is split by a sports rivalry that actually dates to the Civil War you know like you've got backyard brawls and you've got the egg bowl and you've got you know Michigan versus Ohio State you know things like that there's all these great historic rivalries but how many of them center on that on opposite sides of the of the battle type type of deal and and I'm and this town is such a fascinating place because it is a city that's divided at the very outset right by a by a

15:55considered you know it's about and this gets into everything that we have now oh yeah within IL and it was a bit that's for us right now so it money you know cat as as as the Wu-Tay clan concert that I went to on Friday said you know cash rules everything around me people who had no interest in those types of things made decisions that led to these two schools not being in the same conference and you know I was on the Kansas side of that debate so I blame Missouri for leaving Missouri is on the other side going you would have done the same thing if you were in our shoes and I and I get all sides and really the truth is that it was all about machinery that was bigger than both schools the thing about it is you know there was that that governor or the mayor of New York a few years ago not the current one but the guy a few years ago that was talking about the brand of New York we have a brand we have a brand he's like you know if you're

16:58from Kansas you don't have a brand what's your brand oh I'm from Kansas and it's like okay you know you're arrogant and ignorant you don't know anything about this place so you assume there's nothing to know and that's kind of what the life in the Midwest is all about right we're fly over country there's not like people aren't spending any time in New York wondering about the rivalry between you know the historic significance of the rival can Kansas and Missouri but if you look into it you go damn that's interesting and you want to talk about like a branding you have two guys how long ago was all this the the J hawkers of you know the 1850s or whatever I mean we're talking 200 years ago close to it now you know and there's and you got guys sitting there arguing about who was on the right side of history with this and I remember my daughter telling me that that was like a debate like a NSA they had to write in

18:00class was John Brown a hero or a villain he's violent he's a murderer make the case he's anti slavery he's a freedom fighter make the case you know and these these are fascinating people I mean whether you know whatever side of it you're on it is tell me it's not interesting oh yeah tell me about a story there we're playing their playing football again that's why this is a story though like just I think that's why they're you know spattin back and forth online is because they're they're saying they're not talking about sport but this is coming from the fact that they're playing this coming Friday and I think you know it's it's cool that these two teams are playing against each other again these two you know heated universities because some of the some of my friends and some of even people that I'm not super close with but just the stories the the some of the best stories and best times I've ever had has been the KU and MU games like just the amount of you know yeah just the enthusiasm the thrill defeat all of the stuff that comes with these two teams playing and obviously

19:04the the biggest one being the the one two game in Arrowhead like some of my friends say it's the greatest game I've ever seen as far as in person college game and just what was that on the line for it so it's cool these these these these two teams are playing again it should be and it looks like it should be a fun game I mean I don't know how much we can take from both teams first you know first yeah yeah opponents you know opponents out there but you know they both they both took care of business you showed that they're they you know they can outclass a team you think would win between Pine Bluff and L.A.U. and Brooklyn I don't have any those two teams played each other it'd be a dog fight that's own even I have no idea how to handicap that yeah but to your point about the like the memories of the rivalry and all that the biggest thing I remember from childhood is in that and that's another reason that this like this this gets heated is because in this town you have fans of both you know and so there aren't

20:05many rivalries in American sports like if the if the chiefs lose to the Broncos on Monday there might be a Broncos fan or two that you know that you have to go see it worked the next day but if you you know you you must have countless Kansas friends that are Kansas alums yeah I is that is that fair to say or at least a handful yeah it's a good amount a good amount I know I've got a I've got a long list of friends who are miss I mean I shared a studio here with one for a long time but you know yourself I know I mean I know well I'm one of the greatest guys I've ever met is Jared Sutton you know I mean the zoo guy and you're gonna have to like see your friends and wear it if your team loses right you're gonna have to suffer the the the jabs and the trash talk and all that stuff so that's that's a huge part of it and the thing about that those those armageddon at Arrowhead games especially the first one was you knew at the time if you had any

23:18string I mean it's it's we're into September now September isn't what it once was back when you could call up a million guys but there are some guys that get called up they got a six one win yesterday over the blue jays I know you're going out to the game today one of the one of the story lines with the blue with the royals these days is the performance of Carter Jensen and I would love to get your thoughts on I guess what we're seeing from him right now and also just this season in totality what we've maybe learned about him and what you're I guess I guess you know what what do you expect from him going forward what what have you learned about him this year man well I mean so it started off on a weird foot right getting getting called out for for over sleeping and all the alarms and stuff so that was an interesting start for a rookie but then for him to be the main catcher as a rookie and to take all

24:19that that comes with you know learning the pitching staff calling Major League Baseball games behind the plate dealing with the new ABS rules as well being a catcher is it's a tough position and as far as mentally you gotta be locked in and you know working with so many different personalities regarding your pitchers and then what he's the steps he's taken offensively it's we knew we knew his power was there we knew that he could he could you know hit for doubles as well but it's it's just been really impressive to see the growth as far as maturity the way he's taking pitches and able to drive the ball to all fields and you know like he could before the seasons over he could be the the lead the team leader in in home runs obviously got jacked down just for a little bit with that that elbow issue but yeah the way the way Carter swinging is been really impressive because again he's a rookie and the things that he's having to do behind the home plate which is such a demanding position he he's he's done done awesome and I think the Royals couldn't be happier with what they have

25:22there and in that position to be the be the be the guy for several years to come over the last week he's got three home runs to give him a total of 22 home runs on the season he's sitting for 21 during that stretch for 76 on base percentage his his OPS is 1.634 over the past six games so he's been he's been tearing it up especially that Marlin series he just he just absolutely ripped the cover off the ball I've always been told you take September numbers with a little bit of a grain of salt not as much as you do March numbers but I was always told by by GM's that I've talked to him baseball that the two months that that can get overvalued sometimes or when people pay attention to set to March numbers and sometimes September numbers so that being what it is September is still regular season baseball these are not March is

26:25spring training that's they're not trying that's not to me I pay no attention to those numbers right but this is these are real games against real teams that are playing um yeah I would disagree wholeheartedly I think March numbers you came and come that's apples to oranges yeah these are legitimate because again the blue jays just came into town right or one game out of the wild time to win games they're trying to win baseball games so you can't say that you know September numbers you can't really hold as much weight to him it's like well I'd actually you know argue the fact that teams are trying to win just as much if not more that are that your playing against just depends on where you're at in the standings yeah I mean that's the weird part is you you could also go up against a team that knows they're out of it and is playing some young guys and trying to get a look at some players and I think that's why you take it maybe with just a little bit of a different grain of salt but overall you let us look at the whole of it he's sitting two thirty for the year twenty two home runs as you said there's power there what do you think for a catcher is

27:25always the catching part his comes first anyway but what do you think his upside is as an offensive player man that's that's a great question because I think I think ideally even he would say that he would like to have his average higher than what it is because he has the ability like we've seen in like I was speaking about it just as maturity at the play getting getting better pitches to hit getting more comfortable in understanding what what chase is what pitches to not chase and where he's actually comfortable and driving the ball to all fields so you know I think that to ball skills he's got amazing you know upside to continue to hit hit for more average hit for more doubles lower his his strikeout rate but I mean at the catching position especially with the way baseball is nowadays I think you it 260 was still you know 20 to 25 home runs is is where he he can be you know I see it I got consistent consistent guy there so I'm looking at you mentioned he's got a

28:31chance to to lead the team in home runs he's one behind Jack Agleyone who's got to 23 on the year Salvador Perez by the way has 19 yeah he's it in 226 so I'm looking at let me look here at Salve's career numbers Salve's career lifetime batting averages 262 so it's gone down the last couple years yeah that is that what we're looking at I mean like if if if and obviously on base percentages you know Salve was never a big walk guy so his his on base percentage wasn't going to be much higher than that if if Carter Genson gets to a point where he's putting up a 260-ish batting average and hitting home runs like this that's a hell of a good player to have as your catcher right oh yeah I mean yeah I mean he's he's he's doing this as a rookie too what that's what I'm saying like he's he's gonna learn a lot from this year after they you know they review and and go over things that went well that you know that he could work on and it's it's a great and he did it in real time like that that's

29:37why I think it's been so impressive to as a Royals fan to see the growth of Carter Genson and Jack Caglione that they did this in real time and went through their struggles and we got to see them you know bounce back from it and and really take that next step to be you know to be really good center pieces for this organization so the front office is thrilled to have you know Carter performing this way and and again there's still some stuff he needs to work on and there there always will be but as a rookie to to take on the majority of the of the catching roles and duties and then to still be able to produce at the plate like that is pretty impressive and he's been he's done a lot hasn't he done it Debes from the lead-off position too is that primarily where he's been Carter yeah yeah the last couple of about two months or so maybe yeah so yeah they found us I think they found a spot that works well for him and the team in that lead-off spot yeah seemingly the combination of Genson leading off Bobby and then a hot Caglione yes that's been pretty good yeah yeah isn't surprised you Debes to see him as the lead-off hitter nothing

30:42surprises anymore with who hits lead-off and I mean so you can get on base in a 350 clip or whatever the teams look at I mean yeah the traditional lead-off hitters pretty much all but gone yeah that's a great point I mean there's no off-dins out there in this lead yeah he has he has 58 walks on the year so even those batting averages 230 he is his on-base percentage of 315 which is not like some insanely high on base percentage but it does show that if he gets the batting average up a little bit right I'm in those in the walks carry with it then all of a sudden you're you know you're looking at a guy that's getting on base at a decent clip and I bet you the bet you know last couple of months is on-base percentages obviously we say in over the last six days it's over 400 right right now that's one week I'm trying to look here and see and I think to you guys remember the season like this the team offensively like their strategy and kind of like they're they're kind of principles they they were trying to take more pitches I don't know if you guys remember that they're trying to be more patient or the place like your pitches yeah and so I think

31:42that actually you know it takes time or just maybe they they have kind of revamped that a little I don't know for a fact but it takes time when you have a new philosophy and a new excuse me hitting style that when you're trying to be patient and look for you know specific pitches that it takes time to to really execute that at a high level and I think honestly that's kind of what they were struggling with the first half of the year is getting getting really comfortable and executing what they were trying to do and now you do see the fruits of some of that because that they often since they also break has been a lot better it he is kind of an indication of that evolution towards the three outcome you know game that baseball has become in a lot of ways which is strike out walk or home run you know and I don't love it because for me I like sports when the ball is in play and that was what I loved about like the 2014 of 15 royals they put the ball in play and then you got to see the athleticism

32:44on display home runs are fun and I know walks are important and people love strikeouts from the defense and perspective but he's got the 58 walks I mentioned 150 strikeouts yeah 22 home runs so let's see in however many played appearances that is you know you're having a lot of those those three outcomes but that's the way modern baseball has played right I mean that's what that's what they they want you to do get yourself on base to hit home runs yeah I do think the pendulum is swinging back a little bit I mean that's why I said if he can raise his average and put the ball and play more it's just going to help him because he has the power you know like I think even with Jack earlier when he was struggling is maybe he was trying to hard to hit the ball harder hit home runs where it's like these guys have natural power natural swings that can create the ball to just jump off their bat so yeah even you know George would say that you know if you if you're trying to hit a home run that's not good you know you should be trying to hit any home runs those home runs are a result of you just putting a good swing on it and and at doing its thing so yeah I think I think Carter has

33:48has some really good foundations to build off of for this next year and and really climb for you know his next several years the majority of his his played appearances he's at 300 played appearances batting lead off or batting first in the order obviously you don't lead off every inning just because you're batting first in the order but but as the as the first in the order guy he's got 300 played a pair of 66 games second most is batting fifth at 40 games his his best overall on base percentage is in terms of you know between those two is in the lead off spot he's he's gotten on base at a 320 clip so yeah I mean I do I don't but you guys I'm a little surprised that the home run numbers aren't higher from the royals this year considering the fences being moved in yeah you know the fact it's actually hurt I was reading some about it's actually hurt them this year like the opponents have hit more home runs yeah yeah but I think they that's more of a long longer term play for the next you know

34:48what four or five years until they move but yeah I think they just saw it as an opportunity to where they could try and you know take advantage of what's been typically a pitcher's ballpark so yeah well there's an interesting conversation there and it's good to see Carter Jensen having a really good close out to the season hopefully with he and caglione and Bobby would junior all of a sudden you start to see the building blocks of you know a core group of players going into next season all right we're gonna take a break we got Scotty Carroll here we got Scotty Carroll in studio first thing you said to me when you came in man what's her Michigan got screwed got robbed we was robbed so tell me tell me because I said to you now have you seen all the footage from the big 10 coming out stating their case and you're like yeah not really right there's an old line

35:49and I think it's in like the legal profession that if if you're explaining you've already lost the big 10s trying to get out there and show the video footage of this is why it happened the way that it did the Western Michigan administration is admitting they're saying they're conceding that the process was handled correctly by the video taking the higher route but they're questioning their their they I think the so here let me I just saw this I think it was at the athletic director from Western Michigan the president the president of Western Michigan so we get I love when we get the school presidents involved you know so when I find so funny is this happens on all all like tons of football games you guys see where they bring on the the referee that is kind of like in the analyst the rules analyst hey we brought in terrible positions yeah territories of the world yeah and they they all and have you guys seen how many times that they just go against what's the call in the field and because they

36:51they're not even aware of like what's actually happening like Terry McColley is like yeah this is I'm shocked that they're allowing this the yeah it was at zero yeah yeah yeah clock is at zero yeah and so it just that happens all the time with these rules analyst that they have sitting in and they just bring them on to be another talking head but I just I find it so funny they're like well what do you think is this the right call and there's like oh well yeah this looks like it could be the right call and then just a complete opposite of what they're saying well it does go to show you sometimes how difficult the idea of rules and interpretation is because and it's it's an industry now right like every whatever sport you're doing if it's at the network level they have they have a person like that to retire referee or somebody that worked at understands the rule book back and forth that could come on and say okay this is what they're looking for they're trying to find out this and that that's why it is a good call that's why it is targeting or it's not targeting and all that and they're not always on the same page with the referees for sure but the the problem that we have with this one is everybody watching on television

37:57was shown one thing and apparently the people that were reviewing the in charge of the video review were watching something else and so what you have to go off of I get by the way do you remember they added another second before the down do you remember that they down the box they got a first down the middle of field they spiked it they added one more second you guys remember that yep game operator put nine seconds on the clock yeah so they added another second there and then they added another second if Western Michigan would have thrown this Hail Mary do you think it would have been reviewed this way or is it more of a I mean that just stinks it stinks of just of of homerism and yeah that the team that that was supposed to win needed to win yeah but at the same time all that afforded them was another chance at a 47 yard hail Mary you know what I mean like that's it's like it's the idea that the people in the booth would be like that's give one more chance they're gonna get it this time I mean

38:59it still felt like okay well it's they got a chance you know and they did so here's what the the president of Western Michigan told ESPN this is Russ Kabul Huna he said on Sunday night that he did not think that the big tends replay process that put a second back on the clock leading to Michigan's winning touchdown pass over the Broncos quote is as good as it could be so he's questioning the process it's not as good as it can be and he said quote that's because what the TV viewer see in a pivotal question is different than what the review process shows is there a real reason why we can't have those things equal and if there is let's try and fix that and if there isn't a real reason why we can't have those things synced up then we should sync them up so that everybody who's watching at home doesn't start to wonder what happened right and that's the issue because look as a as a play by play announcer yes in a different sport

40:00but we have training I mean first of all I've had a broadcast coach talked me through how to handle replay scenarios and one of the things she's a she coaches national broadcast with all the time stuff she's big she's always big on make sure when you're analyzing the view you say from this angle it appears because you might not have an angle that shows everything and give yourself that wiggle room from this angle it appears that the clock has run out I was thinking about that while I was watching it like I don't think we ever covered this scenario where we're looking at it and clearly when you're watching what we have to go off of us as viewers but also the play by play an analyst and the rules analyst what they have to go off of shows there is a zero on the clock while the ball is still in the air but then the big 10 comes back and shows you yeah but on the

41:02clock that they're watching there's nine tenths of a second left when the ball touches the guy's hand wouldn't the rules analyst that they have in the booth that they've hired have the same setup that the referees have so they could all be in the same coordination what would that make sense seems like they should seems like they should because that's what ends up happening is like I I got I got done with my job on Saturday night and I take my phone out I look at it I got a million text messages and half of them are boy what's your Michigan just got screwed boy that was they that was just blatant cheating that was just how could I've watched this I mean buddy say I watched this 30 times and I can't see where they found a second there you know because everything that we're given tells us one thing yeah and then in the aftermath they tell you yeah but this is what was really going on in the booth that's a problem yeah 100% yeah because people aren't aren't you're you're not telling you're not like you're saying you're not giving people the full story of what they're viewing and that needs to be synced up better and I didn't know that you could

43:08the field I thought he got better as the game went on I think KU is going to be a lot better run in the ball all that stuff but it's like they got 30 new guys on the 2d and they just played it a potent that was clearly like just not a match for them so how does that translate to what it's going to look like against mizu same with mizu like they they they dominated a team that they were clearly better than right yeah they struggled running the ball again with you and so now I think KU and what I would usually say is typically in the history of this rivalry KU even when they're underdogs plays really well against mizu they get up for it you know all this talk of the you know free state versus mizu and all that stuff I think it it should be a good atmosphere I think everybody's going to be ready for the game all that but the other thing about it is when everybody is a mercenary and everybody's brought in on an NIL deal how quickly can you get them bought into this game matters a whole lot more you know what I mean like is that still going to be are we still going to see that I think so I think that being on campus and being around or whatever kind
