Navigator Cole has spent three years abusing M-Cal, a controlled drug that lets his brain perceive the four-dimensional mathematics of slipspace.

Aboard the bulk freighter Atlas, one of the Axiom Rings that keeps the ship’s interior locked to three dimensions suddenly seizes. Corridors stretch. Right angles acquire impossible depth. Crew members caught in the spreading distortion are folded alive into anatomies no human body was built to survive.
