We're going to talk about Colton Joseph.

1:00Talk about a couple of big things. Talk about player grades. But we have to start with Malachai Coleman. We have to start with, I think the Badgers might have just unlocked a number one receiver. Thank you for being with us. Let's go here. Malachai Coleman gets the touchdown early in the game, playing against Notre Dame Secondary. And he does it on a brilliant, brilliant bit of route running. And allow Malachai Coleman to introduce himself to you all. Because I didn't know he had that in his bag. I didn't. If you go back and you follow the Malachai Coleman journey, the four star receiver, six foot four, six foot five, a four four guy. And I just kind of thought this is going to be a player that's going to come to Wisconsin. You're going to use them on just vertical routes this year because he's a height weight speed guy. And then week one against Notre Dame. He had two two incredibly impressive moves against the best secondary in the country.

2:01He put two of their defensive backs on their backs quite literally with a bit of an out and up. And he looked great. Had 40 snaps. He was out there with the ones he played a lot more than I think people expected. And some of that was Hilton got a little dinged up. But if he is starting to unlock. If he is starting to become kind of that route runner that can put things together that can be quick and efficient in his steps. Be quick and efficient in his movements. Because of the vertical threat that he puts on defenses. Because of how fast and athletic and quick he is. Give me a nightmare for people. Now let's see it for more than one game. But he just did this against Notre Dame. And now it's on film. And now you're going to have defensive backs questioning it. Am I going to can I drive on this route? The more you have in your toolbox, the better you are, the better equipped you are. And if he's adding stuff like that to his toolbox with the four four speed at the six five frame.

3:03We know he can just run the nine route. He can just get deep and go and get it. If he is starting to add this nuance into his game. We said it before the show we had a guest on. Who was known Malca Coleman since he was in high school involved in his recruitment said this is physically. As talented a receiver as there is in the big 10. There's a reason everybody wanted him. And what he showed on film against Notre Dame is now that production matching up with the physical traits. That you if you're a badger fan, then there's plenty to be frustrated with week one. But there's also plenty of positives. If you're a badger fan, you you have to be excited about what you saw from Malca Coleman. Because if you can emerge as kind of that number one or at least a big time boundary weapon. This team has been searching for that since Chris Chambers. No, it's not in that long. I know I mean Jared Everdair is obviously Eric Alex Erickson. But even Alex Erickson wasn't this type of guy. They haven't had a big fast physical receiver that could also do the receiver things required at the highest level.

4:04They haven't had a guy like this in forever. I was I went back so went back rewatched all the film. So you guys don't have to rewatch all the game. We're going to talk about everything I saw. But the first thing it stood out. It's it's Malca Coleman. If nothing else you go into next week saying we need him all we need to continue featuring him to see if this is real. Is this a one game or I don't have a hard time thinking you're going to do that to Notre Dame's defensive acts and call it a mirage. Like the physical tools have always been there for him. So now next week let's keep building on this. Can we continue to develop this throughout the course of the year. Obviously, Colton Joseph has rapport with him. The coaching staff has him out there with the ones they went to him early. And he delivered. You can ask for a better week one performance from that young man. And it's awesome. Like he could be that missing piece in this receiver room that was constantly searched for a long time. You know the type of guy that they've recruited but kind of missed out on recently. The guy that we thought maybe a Jaden Pateek could develop into.

5:05Maybe you got that guy Malca Coleman. It's possible. What he did against Notre Dame against one of the best secondaries in the country. You can you just can't ignore it. We got to continue build it. But I'm very, very impressed by what he was able to do. Okay, let's let's talk. Let's talk Colton Joseph. So again, I went back. Watch every rep. Every throw. Every pass. How would I grade Colton Joseph? And I'm curious in the chat. And you don't have to go back and watch everything to give a grade. Like what would you give Colton Joseph on the grading scale? And I think after the game, I'm going to be completely honest. I was a little. I was a little frustrated with Colton Joseph. Colton Joseph, the offense in general, obviously the second half. I went back and I watched Colton Joseph. I think I'll hire Colton Joseph after rewatching it all. Not even think I am. I'm higher on Colton Joseph after rewatching it. And let me get the bad out of the way. Okay, went back and rewatched it. I got notes on everything. Let's talk about Colton Joseph because it's the most important position on the team. And it's the spot the Heppnbeele figure out. Largely due to injuries and Luke Figgles, era, but big test.

6:08Notre Dame. What did it look like on the rewatch? Let's start here. It's consistency. Consistency is going to be the thing all season long with Colton Joseph. He threw a couple of dimes. Seymour out to Coleman. He had a beautiful throw to Chris Brooks. That was dropped just beautiful dime. Like unbelievably clean, nice throw. A really nice slant pass to Eugene Hilton, Jr. He made some really nice throws. I loved his patience. They kind of fake the screen to the right side. He came back to Henry on the left. Really sold it. Moxie patience, but consistency. There would be a good throw and then a throw that he was late. His first couple passes. And this is what I'm going to chuck up to a little bit. It's game one. I think the nerves at the anxiety nerves, the energy, whatever. I think it was running a little high. And he missed a couple early throws. He's going to have to get better there. You know, there were there were run after catch opportunities. There were several of them. If you made a better throw. He threw behind Chris Brooks and Chris Brooks had kind of stopped to catch it.

7:10That led to a tackle. He threw a little behind to our little in front of on a screen to Eugene Hilton, Jr. Right to dive for it. As a quarterback, you have to throw your receivers to spots where they can pick up rack. That's what that's what CJ Car was doing all night. And he's tremendous. But he was throwing to spots where his receivers could catch it and then run. Whereas some of Colton Joseph's throws were throwing to spots where his guys had to stop the catch it. Or had to reach back to catch it. You lost hidden yardage because of that. That's not a stat that's tracked. It's because it's impossible. But you know, yards after catch lost due to inaccuracies are real thing. And there were multiple times early in the game where he was too inconsistent. Right. With the accuracy of the ball placement. But I'll tell you what I loved about it. I loved the Moxie. You know, I loved just what he gives you. There was multiple plays moving the pocket. You could tell he occupies Notre Dame defenders. Just yet let us is in the movement skills. They run him too much. I'll be just be straight up with you.

8:10I was counting the hard hits. But the basically in I quantify hard hits as times I'm watching the film and I kind of shudder a little bit when he gets hit. And like that's my quarterback. I don't love that. I ended up with six watchers watching the film and a couple of them were there were a couple big ones like big pops. But I kind of like six times where he got like thrown to the ground by defense alignment got banged out of bounds got smashed and like that's too much. Jeff Grimes coach Grimes all due respect. I'm not often a coordinator. I'm not smarter than you with mobile. But that I do know that's too many hits for your quarterback when you have actual running backs. Okay. But that being said, you just get bouncing back and he made he made several good throws after big hits, which shows me he's not intimidated by it. It shows me he's tough shows me he's physical. He had a he had some nice throws. Quite frankly, especially as he settled down, I thought he made some really nice throws against the best secondary is going to face this year. I think it's like a B minus. I know the interception. If you want to say C plus C whatever I mean, I'll say whatever you want to say, right?

9:12I'm not here to tell you what you to grade Colton Joseph, but. I came away more impressed with him after the rewatch and I don't know if the interceptions fully on him. He just needs to eat that ball. Right. Like it's a bit of a broken play miscommunication him and the receiver on the same page. And by the way, the offense line let him down on that. If you go back and watch that left side of the offense line just lets a free rusher get through. And I'm it. I want to say that's on Wilkins. I'm not positive. It looked like he thought he was passing that rusher on to somebody else. I will leave that for a smarter football minds. To me, it felt like that was on Wilkins. But either way, there's a guy right in his face and he was just trying to make something happen. He's got to eat the ball. You're a shortstop that's not going to get the ball to first just eat it. He forced it. It is what it is. It's week one great, great secondary. You can't make that throw, but I think he's going to learn from that. But even then he bounced back. He made more throws as the game went on. Yeah, I don't love the way they're using as much as a running threat as much as they are. But I think it's like a B minus C plus for me.

10:12And I think in the moment right after the game, I was more critical of that. So I'm going to watch the old 22. I know he missed a throw to Chris Brooks. I said he's going to love to have back. I'm sure they've already watched film on it. He was the one thing. I will say the one thing he kind of locks in on his guy. But it's also week one. It's week one. And I think how good Notre Dame is can probably get in your head a little bit too. So going back, I thought he was better actually on the rewatch. And I'm excited to see what he's going to do and continue growing in his offense. Coming up next, the highest and lowest, lowest graded players on the badgers. Who graded highly? Patrick Fennatic, we got to stop ending drives of the 40 are line. I know it's Notre Dame is a tough parameter. JC said I like to see them establish the run games with defenses can't focus on them. But James says Notre Dame is a very good defensive line. We will run better against most of our opponents.

12:19I'm going to get into that later. They did struggle with the offense are the defense line with Notre Dame. Okay, purple, purple, focus. And again, I say that first because some people hear that and they're never going to listen to a great purple. Focus does and I'm telling you right now don't take anything to do for gospel. Okay, like, purple, ball, focus still look at pFF. They'll look at every. Excuse me every player rep. They'll grade players, but they don't know the scheme and it's it's somebody's still at the end of the day. It's still somebody's opinion grading. But there is value here. I would caution people don't just ignore it because nobody else is looking independently at every snap and trying to give you an idea of what these players do. And especially over the course of the season, I think there is value here, especially when it comes to mistackles times targeted. There are some really nice things you can take from pFF that being said again. It's not gospel. But I'm just here to tell you here are the pFF grades the top the top three highest on offense. It's Malachi Coleman who we've talked about Eugene Hilton Jr. and Abu Sama.

13:24Those are your top three highest graded players on offense. Two receivers and running back in it. I'll be honest I thought I'll played well. None. The other thing with stats and grades like when you get advanced grades or metrics or analytics from some site regardless of what they are. Take that and then verified against your own eye test. What you what you thought I came out as thinking man Malachi Coleman played great. You know pFF is the highest graded offense player. Yeah that checks with me. I thought Abu Sama. Here's one where I think the the pFF grade backs up with my eyes saw. I thought Abu Sama played pretty darn well. But the stats don't really back it up. But when you go back and you watch the film. He doesn't have a ton to work with. I thought the offense line was inconsistent. Which shouldn't be a surprise. There's people coming back to working new pieces in. Noted him's got a really good front seven. For the most part I thought Abu Sama did the most with what he had. He made a couple people missed. He ran hard. A couple times I'd like to see him get a little more north south. Like he. He has a bit of a tendency to try to bounce everything because he's quick and he's very very.

14:26Very explosive. Times just put the shoulder down but I thought he was good. The three lowest graded. Offensive players. It's Kevin Haywood PJ Wilkins and Colton Joseph. So. I thought the offense line struggled at times. And I don't think it was just Haywood or Wilkins. Although I did think Wilkins had some issues in pass pro. And I think Haywood was a little rusty. Be completely honest. And neither of those things should surprise people. Kevin Haywood is coming off a season where he didn't play last year. And you're starting off against just a really, really salty good. Noted him front seven. And I thought they both had issues. Times were there were some struggles where they gave up some pressure. There was one in particular with PJ Wilkins. I mentioned it on the interception where it. Maybe that's not on him but felt like he he let a guy through. And there was one with Haywood where. I think it was Treyore the really talented noted in defense event kind of. Gave him a bit of a jab step then went to a spin move. Those are really good players that Kevin Haywood and PJ Wilkins are going up against.

15:28I'm very confident those guys are especially Kevin Haywood is going to continue to get better. But it's week one. And I thought there was inconsistencies across the board on the offense line. The third lowest graded guy on offense was Colton Joseph. I think the interception really weighs that down. I'm okay with what he did going back to what I said on the rewatch and the in segment one. I thought CJ was actually pretty solid for us and considering the circumstances. There was also a couple drops. Tyrell Henry had a drop. Chris Brooks had a drop. Again, he's got to be more consistent. Ball placement decision making. There was a couple of the throws now you have one interception. I think there were two or three interception worthy throws. If you go back in not every bad pass gets picked. Right. Not every great pass becomes a reception. Sometimes you have to watch every throw and try to look at the context behind it. There were two other throws where CJ tossed out their mind. Don't throw that right. The one was I think the first throw of the game where they were running a kind of a quick out. And he was late in behind. There was another one where he tried to get it.

16:29Schmarry B and Leonard Moore was just all over him. There was zero chance of reception there and Leonard Moore almost one hand picked it. Decision making has got to get better. But yeah, so to the offense line. It was inconsistent guys. I thought the offense line was very inconsistent. And I think that is going to get better with reps. It's going to get better a when the level of competition ramps down. But I think this offense line is actually going to get better just with reps. And then later in the year when they're playing some really defense lines, I think you're going to be better. They did in my opinion, struggle with the interior power of the Notre Dame defense line. There were times where Austin Coekie got rocked. A couple of times where the other guards got pushed back a little bit or had had a bit of an issue getting push. Getting Mandelback is going to help that guys. Getting Emerson Mandelback is going to help that interior power of the offense line. Because I think at times they just had trouble standing up to the size and power of what Notre Dame could do on the inside. And you saw it.

17:29You saw it kind of throughout the game where they're just. There are moments where there just wasn't much for Abu Samar or Colton Joseph or Darion Dupri. But I think that group is going to get better. Let's go to defense. Here are your three highest defensive players. Again, according to BFF Sebastian Cheeks number one. He was awesome. I think the whole pass rush kind of died off in the second half. But Sebastian Cheeks had a force fumble. Got to see Jakar another time. He's really good. Like he's really, really good. He was the highest created defensive player. Number two is the Denajel Cooper. Who had a really, really nice penetration on a running play. Or in the second half or late first half. The staff likes him a lot. Denajel Cooper is going to be good for us. And the number three is Javon Robinson. Who I think many mostly just kind of avoided. Now Wisconsin played a lot of zone at times too. But yeah, Javon Robinson graded out pretty well. Your three lowest graded defensive players. Charles Perkins. Tyree Sphereby.

18:29And Bryce West. I had to be honest. I thought Bryce West was pretty good. I thought Bryce West. Now, he gave up a couple of receptions. He was targeted four times. He gave up two. It's probably driving some of his grades. But he had a big time hit. Like he had a really, really nice pass break up. He had another one where he tipped the ball. I thought he coming out of this. I thought he looked really instinctual. I liked what we saw from Bryce West. But I think the lower grades on a guy like Perkins. Fiery I thought got washed out a couple times. I think Perkins started really well. And then as a game went on that interior of the defense line got pushed around a little bit more and a little bit more. And it felt like the game kind of. It felt like they got worn down just a little bit. A couple of interesting things from from snap counts. Nicholas Clayton only had 11 snaps. I think you got to find a way to get him on the field more. And I can understand you want him situationally. But I think his speed can show up in a lot of ways, even on potentially first and 10 run type down.

19:33So you just expose about the edge and you can be exposed up the edge and be disruptive as a run a run defender as well. I think you got to get Nicholas playing on the field for more than 11 snaps in my opinion. And then we talked a lot. Kind of this off season heading into the season about the linebacker rotation. Thomas high burger finished with just a couple snaps and Aaron whip early play. So they definitely kind of pivoted to John John come are there. The other thing and this one this one hurt. This one hurt Wisconsin guys when you look at the post game the PFF they have Wisconsin credited with 11 missed tackles. And a lot of those were in the second half and it showed up on the rewatch too. I think the coaches talked about it. Matt young Mr. couple, but it was all over the board. There were just too many missed tackles in the second half that has got to get cleaned up. And I don't know if again, maybe it's a fatigue thing. Notre Dame started to really kind of control the clock and put some stuff together. Notre Dame's got some some really shifty playmakers right they got some guys that can make you miss. But it was a little over aggressive.

20:34You got to break down and open field. You got to make sure you get the legs get the tackle. I think a couple people were maybe just a little too amped up, you know trying to make the big play. I get that. But that's got to get better. You can't miss 11 tackles. And if PFF's off one or two, it is what it is. We definitely all watched the same second half and saw that's way too many missed tackles. And there's a big reason why that second half felt flat. There were moments and opportunities to hold was our whole Notre Dame to five yards to keep them under the chains. And instead it's just a missed tackle a bad angle. It's got to clean up. Okay, let's get some comments in here. Yo, let's get some comments. If you guys have some. Alex get physical by running the ball and play action for the offense. I wish they would have I feel like they should have done a little more play action. It's I put this comment about because that's something Justin and I were we're talking about.

23:47And it didn't feel like there was as much play action as we thought there would be. So I think it's a good comment. TM biggest issue and offense is the offense line gets very little push creates no running lanes. I didn't think it was a great offense line day. Maybe we probably shouldn't have expected it. You're still down a starter. You got a bunch of new starters. Kevin Awood is back, which is awesome. And by the way, super good. It's awesome to see him out there, by the way. Like it's easy. You got to root for his put in the work. I'm excited, but it's it felt a little rusty to me. And then I think PJ Wilkins is going to have to get better as it goes on. And it's also a really good Notre Dame from front four front seven. But yeah, I would agree with this. I don't think they were great. Buckwald Hawkeye aren't you supposed to take 24 hours in flush and move on. You guys are still on here crying about the loss. Oh, come on. We're literally doing a film review. Get out of here. That's why you got to read the comments before you post them. So, you see, Mitch James says not many D lines are as good as Notre Dame's.

24:48Rob says, Ryan, I'm glad you made it home safely. Let's go badger. Let's go. I agree. I agree. You guys can just ignore ignore that one, dude, in the chat. It's not even worth it. Okay. Let's let's empty the clip. Let's empty the clip here. What else did we see on film? And this is just kind of a running list of things when you go back and you watch the film. What we saw the first one is John Jean Camara. Like it's exciting. When he first came in is not a guy. I think we expected to play week one. And they just are in love with the athleticism. And it plays. You can see him flying around the field. This is a guy that is getting the bulk of those snaps instead of a Thomas Heiber. Or instead of an air and wet. And they just love the athleticism there. First major past rushing situation. The first time you had Notre Dame in kind of a hole. Right. Excuse me. They went cheeks. And this is what we've been trying to figure out. What is their past rush package? You're going to look like when they get a third and seven, a third and 11. Okay. They lined up cheeks. Hammond Russell, who by the way looked good.

25:51I really like that pick up. Fear be. And then Nicholas Clayton. So your edge guys, they went cheeks and Clayton on the first big pass for a situation. I love that athleticism on both sides. Hammond Russell on the inside. I'm curious if if fear be is going to continue to be in that role. So they're going to rotate that. But that was their first opportunity to kind of unveil a past rush package. Liam Danets getting a partial block. That's why you go get athletes. Now it wasn't blocked up well. Notre Dame kind of allowed a free runner there. But you got to be athletic enough to get there. Liam Danets flashing some athleticism. I loved it. I mentioned that they struggled with the interior strength, power of the Notre Dame defense line. I'm that one throw to Bork, right where he was out of bounds. And it was also a bad snap. For example, credit for Golden Joseph, you know, kind of recovering. I love that they were isolating Bork. They were trying to find a mismatch for them on a bit of a tight end wheel route. And that play the entire way was going to Emmett Bork. I love that. Get your big athletic tight end in the end zone against a smaller defensive back against a smaller safety.

26:54Go to work. That's a great call about Jeff Grimes. It didn't work. It you got to get a good snap there. Can we please get some good snaps? But I really, really liked what they did there. A couple times. I just thought they played too soft on coverage. Like they had a blitz where they sent post off the edge. And then off that same edge, they just played. You know, they just backed off and car reddit and just threw it right where the blitz came from. And it was just easy pitching catch. I think you got to be a little more aggressive on the edges with your with your corners. I'll say this Notre Dame closes windows incredibly quickly. Length, size, athleticism. Man, they get there were some plays where it felt like Wisconsin had something. And then Notre Dame just closes those windows so quickly. They got dudes. There's no doubt about it. They got dudes and those dudes showed up on film. 100%. I will say this. I will say this. Wisconsin made Notre Dame pivot a little bit in this game, which is encouraging. You know, like Notre Dame came into this and they wanted to play more bully ball.

27:55And they couldn't for at least for a half against Wisconsin. They had to come out and open it up more go five wide a couple times play action, try to hit some deep shots. And that's where I wish Wisconsin was a little stickier in coverage. But they did make Notre Dame pivot and that's not nothing. There's a lot of teams this year that I don't think are going to make Notre Dame pivot a little bit. And the last thing I'd say and this was kind of a negative man that pass rush just died as the game went on. You had a couple you had that big early play from Sebastian Cheeks and then he had another good one. And then that was kind of it. And there wasn't another guy that to me flashed a lot as a pass rusher. It can't just be cheeks guys. There has to be other guys that win some one on one's last year you had Peterson and Riger. You got to have another guy emerge and I hope that's Nicholas Clayton, which is why you have to have more than 11 staff. For him, but it can't just be cheeks and in this game, it was kind of just Sebastian Cheeks. Jam Volk, yeah, not enough blitzing and stunting.

28:55I would agree with that. I think it was a little to vanilla. From ball, blitzing standpoint from a coverage standpoint. Now some of that is you have to pick your poison and I think they were just trying to make Notre Dame earn it a little bit week one. Maybe something fluke happens, but they're going to have to make it up a little bit. I agree with you, Jan. The James is beautiful catch if you could have gotten a foot down. I agree. Rally says despite more speed at the corner back spots, they were playing soft against Notre Dame receivers. I agree with this too. And I just. I wish they were hindsight's 2020 and listen, sometimes you're like be more aggressive and then they get you with a double move and you get something like Malachi Coleman strolling into the end zone. Like don't be so aggressive. So it's all 2020, but it just gosh, it did feel like we may be respected Notre Dame receivers a little too much. Buckstyre fans said ESPN's QBR gave Joseph a high score. Not sure how it's calculated, but they had him at 81.8. That's what I'm saying. Like I think he was good. I thought CJ was pretty good for us.
