Bonus show number three with Texas head coach Steve Sarkeesian and the lead up to the Buckais showdown with number one Ohio State getting ready to face number four. Texas. This time we're going to be talking about the Texas defense and a few other sort of general thoughts and general trends. So let's start with one area where Texas has been very successful. They're O&T against Ohio State the last two years. But man, feels like they're kind of 2-0 in terms of limiting Jeremiah Smith. He has just seven catches for 46 yards in the last two games against Texas. Now Sarke was asked what makes Jeremiah Smith special but also why they've been so successful

2:09in limiting him. Well, I mean I think one, he garners your attention and he deserves our attention. It's arguably the best player in college football. The challenge is with him it's the size, speed, catch radius. He's a big physical guy who can cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time and it doesn't always look like it but it almost feels like it. You can feel his presence on the field. I know I said this about Cam but we were talking about Cam's catch radius. When you just talk about body structure, this guy looks like Julio Jones. This guy looks like AJ Brown. It physically and he can cover ground and then because he's so strong, 50-50 catches are very difficult with him. You have to have a plan but I think like anything when you have a plan against somebody like him, you can't just throw all fastballs. Even as good of a fastball as you have, that's all you got sooner or later they're going

3:12to hit it. We've got to be able to mix our pitches up and how we defend him and how we defend the scheme because Arthur and Ryan, they believe in running the ball and they've got a good runner and a good ol' line. They've got other weapons and so we've got to be diligent and have an our ability to throw different pitches and then be sound in the back end to make sure that we're aware of where number four is and he garners that. There's not every game to go into where you say, hey, we need to know where this guy is every snap. We better know where number four is on every snap. Ohio State fans will remember that they knocked off their team, knocked off the Texas long horns in the semi-finals of the 2024 college football playoff run. But some people might not remember. They also lost to another team in the semi-finals the year before that. That time it was the Washington Huskies and their final year in the Pac-12, not going off Texas in the semi-finals. How long did it take SART to get over losing just one game from the National Championship

4:14game in back-to-back years? They're tough. I'll be honest with you, they're tough. I think it would probably have been easier to get over if we were just gotten blown out. I think when you get so close, when you have a fourth down against Washington with a fade to AD Mitchell, that's office fingertips that if he catches it, if we're a little better past, maybe they call a holding. I don't know that you're playing for a national title. I think back to the Ohio State game, and I look at like I can count on one hand plays that maybe we're making plays in the game. The screen at the end of the first half, I still see Travion Henderson running in front of me. I still think it's 21-17, and I think to the SACFumble that they run back. When you're that close, it's probably harder to get over.

5:15Like I said, a lot, that's the life of a competitor. We're very fortunate to put ourselves in that arena to put ourselves on that stage, and I wouldn't want it any other way than to be on that stage. There's a lot of other people that were sitting at home on their couch watching us play in that game. The goal is to win that one and then win one more. We've got to do everything in our power to try to put ourselves back in those positions to be even better if we're fortunate enough to be in that situation again. Earlier in the week, we talked to Ryan Day about how Ohio State and Texas, how those games had come down to goal-line situations. Sarc was asked about that as well. Obviously, they've been on the other side of those, and it hasn't gone as well in several situations. Those goal-to-go situations where they've struggled at times against Ohio State. Does he feel like they've added the right people to get over the hump there? I think there's, when it comes to those scenarios, personnel helps, schemes help, the right play called, the right time helps.

6:17The mentality helps. It all adds up because they've got good scheme, they've got good players, they've got good play callers. It's the marriage of those two things coming together. Ultimately, we need to be better in those scenarios. You just think about these last two games we played them. That was probably the difference in the ball game was our inability to score inside the 10. That's why we do the extra work. That's why you play certain emphasis at different seasons of where do we need to improve. Hopefully this time around, we get more opportunities like that and we can capitalize on them. Sarc is one of relatively few head coaches at that real high level who still calls his own plays. When he goes back and evaluates the last two games against Ohio State, how did he feel he did in those two games? How does that and lessons learn there maybe impact the plan for Saturday? Yeah, I felt like last year, unbeknownst to probably more of the national media, we ran

7:19the ball really well. I think people think we just went out there and laid an egg and had minus 10 yards rushing or something. We ran the ball pretty well. I felt like the passing game was not where it needed to be the first two and a half, three quarters or so in that game. When you get behind, you got to start throwing the ball and you got to try to find your way into the end zone and I felt like we had some opportunities and we just didn't get that done. Two years ago, I think the run game was where we didn't have as much success as we would have liked. So what does that tell me? I got to find a way to find balance in this game. When you're playing really good teams, which Ohio State is a very good football team, you have to try to find a way to have balance in the game because the coaches are too good, the players are too smart and when you become one dimensional, you're that much easier to stop. So find and balance in a game like this is important. We had a few of those passes. I probably feel a little better about me as a play caller in those games.

8:20You don't hit them. I don't feel quite as good. That's the life of a play caller. That's the way it goes. One of the players who's going to be tasked with trying to defend Jeremiah Smith and the rest of the Ohio State wide receivers is Bo Masco. He has a name that Ohio State fans might recognize because he had previously played at Rutgers. He played at Ohio State him against the Buckais last fall. So what did Bo Masco bring to Texas and how does he fit into their plan for this game? You know, I think that those are always things because you're trying to find comps, right? I get our regular season schedule, but also I'm trying to think big picture. If what we're trying to do is go win a national championship, who are we going to have to defend? Who are we going to have to block in November, December and January? So for Bo to have a performance like he had against Ohio State a year ago, that's helpful because Ohio State's a perennial playoff team. At some point, if we don't play him in the regular season, if we're forch off to make the playoffs, you probably going to have to play a Ohio State caliber team or teams in

9:22the playoffs. So that's helpful for us to know. I think for Bo, one thing that for some of our newer players, I don't know if it's 107, where's records? I don't know if it was 107 degrees in Pascataway this past weekend. So playing in those conditions is a little bit different. And playing two positions. He was playing corner and star. We were trying to work out rotation. So I just think his kind of footing, let's refer to it as, of playing under those conditions and what that feels like from an energy standpoint, I think will be much better second time around. Nothing he played bad, but I think he can be even better. A name you're going to hear a bunch this week is Texas linebacker Raheem Biles. He is a Pickerington Central High School grad, so a central Ohio kid, but he did not get an offer from Ohio State coming out of high school. He went to pit instead, turned it into a star with the pit panthers and then transferred to Texas instead of going to Ohio State after last season.

10:27What is Raheem Biles bringing to the Texas defense? He had a monster first week, five tackles, half a tackle for loss, forced a fumble, had an interception. He did a little bit of everything for Texas. It feels like one way or another, he is going to be a big story this weekend. Yeah, this guy, he has a problem. He's a problem because he has his unique skill set. In high school, this guy was a DB. So he's got coverage skills. He's got route recognition. But on top of that, he's got instincts that are hard to quantify. If that's the right word to use there. Because like the screen, he gets the interception on. They were trying to deceive us with a bolt motion by the running back with a tunnel screen coming back inside. He sees it, puts his foot in the ground. But there's certain guys that the ball finds them, or you can say they find the ball.

11:29There's this weird, which one is it? Because he almost recovers the fumble that Murad causes too. Not to mention, there's not many guys that are in a hole where there's about a five yard space that would think here comes a runner. My first thought is, I'm going to six inch punch the ball as I'm striking him in the face. These guys are thinking just get him on the ground. But he plays the game on another level intellectually. And a lot of guys probably can do that. He has the skill set to match it, to have the ability to do that. And so we're fortunate because he is versatile. He can play in past coverage. He can play the run. He can rush the quarterback. He's got ball skills. He's got instincts. And so all those things add up to, he's a problem. All right. There you go.
