This is Matt Rogers from Lost Culture East, thus with Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang. This is Bowen Yang from Lost Culture East, thus Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang. And now a quick vital break from our sponsor, Vital Proteins, the official collagen partner of the US Open and presenting sponsor of the Mixed Doubles Championship. If there's a sport where aesthetics meets athletics more than in tennis, I don't know what it is. So it just makes sense for vital proteins to be involved considering how much collagen peptide support healthy skin, hair, nails, bones, and joints. And that applies whether it's players facing a third set tie break in the semis or fans cheering them on. Thanks again to our sponsor, Vital Proteins. The pick takes like three seconds. You know what's hard? The sweat, the time between locking in and cashing out. Yeah, you have a take.
But in the end, it's not about the winners or losers. This is about us, man. Whether we're brave enough to sit through it. Don't like the sweat. Live in it. Because you are an underdog. Underdog. At least you're dog. Turns me up, lie. And now a quick vital break from our sponsor, Vital Proteins. The US Open is so exciting, but it's also pretty stressful for the players. I mean, it's their whole job. But also for us, the spectators, we get invested. Not for nothing stress is not great for your skin, which brings me back around to Vital Proteins, which is putting skin in the game, see what I did there, as the official college and partner of the US Open and presenting sponsor of the mixed doubles championship. This is their second year of a new multi-year partnership, so they're in for the long haul. And it makes so much sense, because every one of these players out there has serious skin in the game, so it makes sense to take care of it. And Vital Proteins College and Pep Tides
helps support healthy skin, as well as hair, nails, bones, and joints. And whether you're one of the best players in the world, or just someone who likes to watch the best players in the world, you can benefit, because we all have skin, hair, nails, bones, and joints, and we all start producing less collagen around 30. Supplementing with Vital Proteins College and Pep Tides can help you look, move, and feel your best. Plus, it fits right into your life. Then you can sit down for a day of watching the US Open. Like I said, it fits right into your life. So when your favorite player is facing a final set tie brick in the quarter finals and feeling the pressure, and you're feeling the pressure too, you can rest comfortably in the knowledge that your skin looks fabulous. Oh my gosh, you can't be serious. You think making the pick is the hard part? No, it's not. The pick takes like three seconds. You know it's hard? The sweat, the time between locking in and cashing out. Yeah, you have a take, but in the end, it's not about the winners or losers. This is about us, man. Whether we're brave enough to sit through it. Don't fight the sweat, live in it. Because you are an underdog. Underdog. At least you're dog. Turns me up, lie. Let's go. Let's go. Okay. All right. Everyone's little too happy, a little too excited. We're gonna bring the mood down here. You're gonna talk about the run game a little bit. Chip Proye. Yeah, all right. Good luck. Good luck. Good luck. All right. Good luck. All right, all right.
Good luck. Good luck. Good luck. Good luck. Good luck. Good luck. Good luck. the championship Russia neither run game with impressive lesson Texas nor Ohio State. How much was incompetence and how much was trying to keep it vanilla and not put any better plays on film for this game? How much was it incompetence? Yeah, 100%. It had nothing to do with not putting plays in the run game. That's their run game. They run zone. They run outside zone. They went 26 zone plays, two gaps plays. And that's how they're going to run the ball. What's got to happen is the execution. And there was poor execution against when ball states started stunting a lot. They started slanting and it was just really bad. You got this switching to where there were 50-50 last year right down the middle with gaps game zone scheme. And when you go all the way to zone, it requires you to really trust the guy next to you because you got to be passing off blocks. You got to be running across somebody's space and trusting that Tom
to my right is going to pick this guy up and your natural inclination is to follow him this way. And as soon as you do that, you throw off everything. And there were multiple plays where we saw multiple guys on the Ohio State offensive line chasing their body the other way, which you can't do. A lot of its rules and just reps and follow in the reps. They're all physically capable of doing it. And when they did, it looked beautiful. They were like dancing bears. But it's like an orchestrated dance. It really is. And they'll get better. It'll get better for sure. But they weren't ready for it to look excellent in game one. I'm worried about it and came to it. It feels like middle of the season. This should look really good. But, you know, obviously that's not tomorrow. It's an organized dance, but you don't know who your partner is. Somebody shows up and then you got to let somebody else dance with them as well. But like that's one of the things people like about the zone blocking and it just creates the shelf of pushing people aside.
But everybody has to do their job. I do, like I said earlier, to start on the show, I think maybe like 120 yards rushing is maybe like, if they can get to that, then, you know, that that's, that would be, obviously, much better than they happen to pass. I feel like they can. But also, that's as much projection as anything. Because after the second quarter last week, but they had like eight carries for negative three yards. And you're like, well, they ain't doing anything against Texas with this front gate. But then they adjusted and fixed some things. But it's just a matter of does it take the first half is the first half of complete wash. And then you rush for 80 yards in the second half. It's like, well, that was, you take that over four quarters. That's 160 yards. Like, is it going to be that compartmentalized where it's like, there's a million yards at the first half. But then they fixed it and they rush for 80 in the second half. As long as it's like, you know, consistent, then you think that they'd be able to operate well enough in the second half to get enough points to witness. Because it probably will be decided in the fourth quarter, you know, ultimately.
So the figuring it out over the course of the first half. And then, you know, the Texas is going to change up some things in the second half. So, you know, that's that's why right day one got Earth or Smith. So I want to believe what what you're saying there that the second half is what we can assume. It's going to look like moving forward yet a bad half scrap it, whatever. Part of me thinks maybe ball state was just a little worn down and they did the bodies to keep up. But maybe that's a little bit of that as well. But when we talk about Ryan Day, a guy that, you know, doesn't really hide his emotions when he's pissed off or concerned. Kind of what you know, you had no concern about it. It didn't feel like any concern to me at the end of the game felt like he, whatever, this stuff we got to get into on it and we move on. And that goes right. That goes right into chips next question, which is coach day seems fairly relaxed. Is that your take to during interviews this week? Mm hmm. You know, frankly, I thought both he and Steve Sarcusian seemed for a game of this magnitude.
Both of them this week felt like. You know, they it wasn't. It's not that they don't care. Obviously they care very deeply, but they they we have seen Ryan Day in. Tight tight. We have been around Sark now at this point enough over the last few years that we're starting to get a sense a little bit for how he is. He's generally pretty loose. But he was very loose and personable this week. And you know, that was Monday. So it's easier to be loose on Monday and then you wake up on. We'll see how you're feeling at five o'clock on Saturday afternoon. But I, both of these guys feel like neither of these guys has the. Oh man, we're in trouble. No, no. I think they're both really looking forward to it because. The thing the coach says you find out a lot about your team. You there's nothing you can hide from this one. You know what everybody is capable of because you've asked for their best. And then you see what that is and what they're capable of. And then you built this, you know, it's it's an information gathering game for everybody.
And if. If this would truly knock somebody out of the playoffs, I think you'd see more. Concerned and consternation and it which takes me back to the fact that last year, he lost to a high estate did not knock Texas out with playoffs because nobody said it at the time. Nobody was like, well. Too bad for Texas can't make the playoffs now. They didn't start talking about that until after we lost to Florida, which was the reason they did not make the playoffs. But this one. As long as you don't look bad, you're going to look good. You're going to look at it. Honestly, like exactly when you lose, you're going to like no, it's a simple statement and put it on a shirt. I don't care. But you know what right juxtaposed right. Yeah, I think yeah, I think you come out of this a winner if you play a close game. I think it puts a lot of stress on on if you lose another one, right? Don't there's a massive amount of stress. So like, for instance, that Iowa game that becomes a little more. The USC game certainly becomes a little more because that's coming right before Indian Oregon. You go out and lose that one and now it's like, Parker and into the big ones.
But you know, this new system and for all of its, you know, the pluses and minuses, like as someone who used to live and die with, you know, the old system, I loved it where it was kind of like a knockout round right off the rib. You know, the old times when we used to play Texas before, it was like, here we go. Is it the season right now? I don't feel so much that way. Anyway, it's obviously not, but no, I feel like if you put on a good showing, you might get a rematch at these guys. And to be honest, you know, this is a team. A lot of people think it's the best team in the country. A lot of people are picking on the national championship. So if it takes Ohio State with a younger team, a little bit of time to catch up to that and get everything together. A good performance here would make me feel feel good. I mean, it's at their place at night. I mean, they got all the advantages. Yes. Yeah, this is definitely one where if Ohio State, whichever team wins this game, they're not in the playoff, but they would need to have a lot of stuff go wrong after this.
You're not, the loser of this game is, it's not great, but you're, you know, unless, if you lose this game by 30 points, that's one thing. We've seen this over the years of the college football playoff committee where if you lose to a bad team, which is what happened to Texas last year. You know, the narrative around Texas as well. If only they hadn't played Ohio, if you don't lose to a fornate Florida team, you're in the playoff. If you, if their second, if their third loss was to Alabama, or at the end of the year, A and M, yeah, you lose to A and M instead of to a fornate Florida team, you're in the playoff. Like as, as people who have covered Ohio State for a long time, we have been right on the cut line of, you know, covering teams right on the cut line of the college football playoff for a long time. Don't lose by a lot of points. Don't lose to a bad team, and especially don't do both. Don't lose to, don't lose to 2018 Purdue by 28 points or whatever it was. Yeah, it's, this is a, you know, whoever wins this game, he's in pretty good shape to make the college football playoff.
Unless you lose, I mean, well, even if you lose three games, this is such a good win that you're probably the first three lost team in. And there's probably going to be a three lost team in there. Yeah, I would say that for a while that there'll be a three lost team. And if, if Ohio State wins, what does this do for them? It means they've got credit enough that they can lose to Oregon, Indiana and USC, and still probably get, get in based on their other wins, as long as Texas doesn't turn into Penn State. Yeah, yeah. Or Ohio State doesn't turn into Penn State for Texas. Honda wants to know if, always you get to big lead early, like what they did against the Oregon in the Rose Bowl. And this team finally be a no mercy team that doesn't let up in the second half. Oregon game, they only scored seven points in second half, wants to seem to have a no mercy mindset. I mean, I think you're not, you're trying to get the win. Yeah. That Oregon game, that was never in doubt. You know, Oregon, I don't think Oregon even ever had the ball down two scores. You know, I think it was, they might have cut it to two scores at one point
and then Ohio State went down to score again. The one that's an example from that postseason is the Notre Dame game, which is where Ohio State was up 30, what, 31, 7, 31, 7 I think. Yeah, it's Notre Dame score the first time. And then, yeah, Notre Dame scored the first touchdown. Ohio State's where 31 points in a row. And it's like, well, all they have to do is just run out the clock. And then it was like, whoa, who let the 2016 Atlanta Falcons in here? Like what? And, and all of a sudden Notre Dame has, you know, the Ohio State has the ball with a seven point lead. And there are six point lead, where was eight, eight? And they're like clinging to it. And then you have the long shots, Jeremiah Smith, then Bing Bangu, they went in the national championship. But yeah, that was, that was the one where it was like, all they have to do is not allow Notre Dame to score quickly here. Well, well, okay, they have to not let them score again quickly here. Okay, well, well, they did again. Like that in the peach ball against Georgia. Those are the two where they've had big leads. The Georgia one, they ended up losing Notre Dame one, they almost lost. But, you know, to, to your point here.
Gosh, to his point, there's a whole lot of these examples. Yeah, a couple. There's a couple. I mean, to his point here, like, what do you, what are you trying, are you trying to keep the pedal down and you're trying to keep throwing? And where, if you throw an incomplete, or you throw an interception, it goes back the other way, then everyone's going, what are you doing? You got a, you know, I, I don't, I think college football coaches are by nature. Such a conservative group and a risk averse group. That you're just, you're not going to see that. Because I'm so old, I can remember the, just might, this might be before, well, no, you're about as old as I am. The Houston Oilers Buffalo Bills. Like, oh, yeah, 35, 335, 35, 3 Houston, they kept the pedal down. Because they didn't run the ball ever. They ran the running shoot. They're just going to keep throwing. Well, a bunch of incomplete passes. You get some short possessions. Buffalo with backup quarterback Frank Reich comes in and they come back from 30,
was 35, 3, I think, went over time tied at 38. And the bills won at 41, 38 and over time. That was, that was, you know, you can, you can screwed up being by keeping the pedal down to. Can I ever tell you my story about that game? I made my brother watch it and it got out of hand. So it's like, yeah, what else is on? So we watch Greece. Once Greece is done, it's like, well, let's check back to the football game. All right, the car is flying must be timed. It's full back. Exactly. We're on the Ferris real. Let's see. We've sung all the songs. What's over there on the again, again, a fellow again in the boom. That was a good one. Beauty school dropout Frank Reich also turned off the, what the 89 Minnesota Ohio State game. So he done and so I finally got to see like the last couple of drives on that one. I don't think it was Greece that day, though. But we got a super chat from Mike Frenow. There was a three-lit loss team last year that made the playoffs. It's true. And I think you're going to, you're going to see that more now because the SEC is now playing nine conference games.
So there's nine more losses being spread among the, no, how many teams are in the SEC now? 60 16. So there's eight more losses being spread among the SEC teams just because there's eight more SEC conference games. Now a bunch of those are going to go to the Mississippi states and the Vanderbilts and whoever said we've made the belts. Not this year. They ain't the, a bunch of them are going to go to those others and put. There's going to be another game between pick your combination of Texas Georgia, Florida. Texas A&M, whoever that one of those teams Alabama, one of those teams is going to get a loss. That's how it works. When we say three loss team, I'm thinking regular. Yes, correct. Correct. Correct. Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Although, I mean, because the three lost team, the third loss coming into conference championship game, those guys are generally generally going to make it. Those are those are the conference championship for better or for worse is generally considered to kind of not count in a way.
Essentially, unless you're in the ACC. I think, I think it's hilarious that her signati has basically trolled the SEC SEC into playing nine conference games and then he still plays this terrible conference schedule. I can't say that. That's the way I feel. And he's like, well, you know, what there's no rule against it. It's like there needs to be. Yeah. There's a big there's about to be because it sounds like there's sort of a growing consensus between SEC and big 10 upon the 2014 playoff. And essentially, my understanding is Greg Sankey sort of said, well, we'll do it. But only if you'll play, you'll agree to play 10 power conference teams and Tony patiti kind of shrugged. And it was one of those. I don't know if that was I don't know if Greg Sankey was hoping that you would say yes, but like maybe this is the compromise that the good compromise that leaves everyone unhappy that that might be where we are.
But essentially the deal is you have to play 10 games total between big 10 SEC ACC, big 12 Notre Dame. I think is is between those conferences and Notre Dame. You have to play total of 10 games and that you want to play 10 conference games fine. You had to play nine conference games and one power conference team out of conference fine. And you know, I think Ohio State looks at that and kind of goes, okay, and they're doing that anyway. But do it. Yeah, they've been doing that basically forever. I was it then the weird one off years where someone can. Yeah. I mean, for the eight teams total who aren't doing it this year, five of them and the big time. Yeah, well, that's irritating to me. Yeah, because big 10 fans will stick up for dignity. I was saying, it's like, what your team isn't doing that? Why are you cheering for this guy? Yeah, right. Everyone's like, oh, look over there. Texas tech. Can you believe what cowards they schedule like? And it's like, yes, but also you know, though, there's if there's no rule against FCS teams.
It'll be Indiana, Chris, and then you'll have 10 power four teams and then two FCS teams like Indiana State and Indiana pencil idea. Why are you playing Rose Holman? That's not they're like division three. Didn't tell me or Terry. No, probably about he did that when you're two FCS teams because they needed wins. Like they needed wins because they. They had some issues or something like they just wanted to get some wins. Well, you mass this year is playing two FCS teams, which before the season, you look at that and went, yeah, absolutely get two wins this year. Go for it, man. If you hope you beat both of them. And then now they've beaten Rutgers and now you're going well, only one of those counts for the whole eligibility. You mass. I don't know. That's going to hurt them and play off right. This is what I wanted to just go back to just because what a phenomenal game this was. Megas Lowe says there was a lot of NFL talent on the field for that 2005 Texas Ohio State game. We're either of you guys at that game. No, that was I went to that game.
That was in this like narrow window of time where I was not on the Ohio State football beat. So I just got a ticket went to that game. What an incredible scene like an incredible scene and you just one of those games where you're watching it and you're like, this is the game we're even talking about 20 years from now. Now I thought we'd be in flying cars and maybe living on the moon. We were talking about it instead of sitting in a hotel room. But here we are. And you you just you watched Ohio State and the amount of talent they had on that team and Texas and the amount of talent they had on that team. It was like these very well might be the two best teams in the country and it was just absolutely absolute slugfest and you walked out of that stadium. It was there were Texas fans sitting in the section that I was sitting in and it was like people were just like going up to them after the game and just like shaking their hands like man. That was an incredible football game. Definitely an incredible football game. Certainly one that we have talked about for the last 20 years. And that's what kills me with the kind of like I don't know the nantification of the college football coaches in ADs this day and age getting rid of these games.
Yeah. So many of them scrapping them and I talked to high estate fans who would like to scrap them just like these are the ones we talk about for 20 years. Not the trip out to Illinois and week four it's these ones and you got to keep playing them. I'm so happy that the Alabama one staying. I hope that inevitably this going to 24 will keep these scheduled and maybe we'll see more of them come back because guys week one and week two have been horrible around college football. I mean terrible. Yeah. I was thinking with the 12 team playoff more teams could get in so this would invite better scheduling. Yeah. Instead you're still seeing programs scheduling wins. Yeah. And so with the 24 it's like of course you're going to schedule better games. It's like well no coaches still just want to schedule wins and get these home games. So it's like you have to put in these these rules that ensure for some that 10th game is going to be Rutgers or Boston college.
I think why I think it's got lost in college coming up and let's get canceled that one finally. But stuff like that but you're still going to have why I see an Alabama Texas playing Michigan the next two years after this year. Now is that a big game for Texas probably not but you get the point. So yeah, I don't want to see those games go either the 2005 Texas game. That was one of those where it was like the 97 Penn State game where it's like you leave that game was like that was just an awesome game. Sure. Iowa State lost but it was like this was a slugfest watching Ohio State chase down and catch pinch young and tackle him and then him still make plays. I was just bombs after bomb after bomb sometimes it'd be a G. I'll come back to Carpenter sometimes it'd be Vince Young and I was fun to watch. I was writing at the ozone at that time and one of the readers of the ozone would let me use his season tickets and they were in B deck for a throw of B deck. Ask me how I know. Yes. And I was so excited to be able to go to this game and then you know talking with about schedule is like yeah I'm going to keep that Texas tickets.
I'm sure you are. Just looking at some future schedules for Ohio State obviously this year at Texas 2027 they play Alabama 2028 they're at Alabama 2029. The schedule is Navy Charlotte and Youngstown State so that might have to change. I mean maybe does that still count though because it's I don't think so. Are they counting that as power for you? I know it's no. I don't believe so no 2030 they're at Georgia 2031 Georgia comes to Columbus and then yet 2035 and 2036 Boston College and at Boston College. I'm going to guess that those games do not get played as scheduled because I don't know what the structure of college football is going to be in 2036. But that's when a lot of the TV contracts and all that are up so it's time for another hope with LSU. You know what I would be LSU I think 100% I would love to see this would have been a lot more exciting about five years ago at home at home with Clemson.
Yeah I mean that was another rivalry that this is being a rivalry of Texas. Clemson and Ohio State was definitely rival. There was a point this is one of these things where you watch them get just disemboweled, ritually disemboweled by LSU last week and it's impossible to imagine. Five years ago, five years ago inside the Woody Hayes Athletics Center there were three banners hanging inside celebrating enormous wins in Ohio State football, recent Ohio State football history and it was beating Alabama in the sugar bowl in the I don't think they even had the national championship game up there. It was just like here's big teams we've beaten and it was Alabama in the sugar bowl in 2014. It was Clemson in the sugar bowl in 2020 and what was the third one? It wasn't the rose ball. No it wasn't the rose ball again. Was it almost British Georgia? No, no. There was one more up there but it wasn't it was like not the national championship against Oregon.
It was someone else that they had beaten and it was like it was because they were creating a scrumption all the time and your clumsiness one of the standards in the sport and look at this time we beat Clemson was kind of the unsaid message and for them to have gone from there to where they are now like holy smokes. It didn't seem possible. Daddell had them on such a run where it's like nobody's stopping them for a while and recruiting was outrageous for them and they developed well and they always had skill. And then boom the portal the NIL all of this change college football and he could adapt. Iostate has done a great job of adapting other programs have done a great job of adapting. He just refuses. He went forever. This is the first year he went into the portal and actually brought in the rather than he brought his one quarterback back from Northwestern a couple of years ago. Hunter Johnson? Yes. I don't know. I don't know. I mean the story of their ascension was already the most unbelievable story of our lifetimes like what they did but this now I mean it almost becomes like the book ends like it's over like they're not ever going to be that again.
They don't have the money. They're small. They're a tie. Right. I went to a game there been it's a tiny little campus. Yeah. When my son did the boot camp graduation I scheduled it for all right but take us to go watch Syracuse Clemson to take in a game there and I was walking around the campus. I was like this over all right. I got it. You know what I do in a place. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. If you tell me that's a boy it's all right we could steal a car at least. And now a quick vital break from our sponsor vital proteins the US open is so exciting but it's also pretty stressful for the players. I mean it's their whole job but also for us the spectators we get invested. Not for nothing stress is not great for your skin which brings me back around to vital proteins which is putting skin in the game. See what I did there as the official collagen partner of the US open and presenting sponsor of the mixed doubles championship. This is their second year of a new multi-year partnership so they're in for the long haul. And it makes so much sense because every one of these players out there has serious skin in the game. So it makes sense to take care of it and vital proteins collagen peptides helps support healthy skin as well as hair, nails, bones and joints.
