2:02We are back with a second bonus show with a little bit from Steve Sarkeesian, the Texas head coach. On the last show you got to hear his thoughts on the Texas offense. Now get to hear a little bit about the Texas defense and the Texas defense. They were pretty darn good in week one. They took on Texas state, which is one of the best teams in the nation on offense. Statistically, G.J. Kinney had the only offense that had two different thousand yard receivers that brought both of those guys back and they brought their quarterback back from last year. This was a high flying offense in Texas. They gave up 349 yards. They gave up about five yards of play, but they only gave up seven points, four three turnovers, all in all given the quality of opposition. That was a pretty good result for the Texas Longhorn's defense and new defensive coordinator will must champ. Obviously a name that a whole lot of people know from his time as a head coach at Florida and at South Carolina. It was also a defensive assistant at Georgia a couple of years ago when Ohio State played Georgia and in the beach ball. So a name that I'm guessing most Ohio State

3:07fans are at least somewhat familiar with and he's bringing a lot to the Texas defense this year. You're going to get to hear a little bit more about his impact next, but we're going to start with linebacker Rahim Biles. Now that is a name that you were going to be hearing a whole heck of a lot this week. So I'm going to tell you right up front. If you read his name, it's going to you're going to think it's pronounced regime, but the S it is silent. There is it is R.A.S. H.E.M. but the S is silent. So it is pronounced regime. So there you go. The more you know something else you might want to know. He's from Hickerington Central High School. He did not get an Ohio State offer out of high school. He got banged up in his senior year, missed a bunch of time. So ended up going to pit instead where he turned into a star. Then this past off season when he went in the transfer portal, he chose Texas over Ohio State. So that is going to be a very, very big storyline this week. And not just because of the hometown ties, he is also a absolute superstar for Texas

4:08already. He had five tackles, including a shared tackle for loss, also forced a fumble. Also had an interception all in one game on Saturday. And he didn't play the whole game. That is a pretty good day of work for Rahim Biles. So what does he bring to the Texas defense? I think when you see him, you think athletic, you know, versatile. I think the one thing that he probably doesn't get enough credit for is the physicality of which he plays the game. He's a violent player. Like the play he makes to cause that fumble is elite. Like most guys just are worried about getting the guy on the ground. And he's coming through with a six inch punch as he's tackling him to knock the ball out. Like the savviness, the intent that like that's hard to coach that. But he has those instincts about him. And we'll see it throughout this season. His ability and past coverage, his ability to rush the passer. He's definitely a very versatile player for us. And you were definitely lucky to have him.

5:08mentioned that the Texas state offense was one of the best in the country, statistically last year. And they moved the ball some on Texas. They put up more than a hundred yards of offense in the second quarter. But then once once things got kind of to half time, little must-champ made some adjustments, things settle down and Texas kind of locked them down in the second half. So what were they able to do? Why was Texas state able to move the ball on that defense a little bit in the first half? And what were they able to do in the second half? Kind of get things under control. Well, well, it's great, you know, and I really feel for the guys because a lot of I think about 50 of those yards came on a quarterback's scramble, you know, down their sidelines where we couldn't, we just couldn't get lined up. Not if you're watching it that we kept flopping back and forth and then inevitably, there's a gaping hole for the quarterback just to run right through and run for about 50 yards down inside the five yard line. Or probably might have a little better day that way. But Texas state causes you real problems, you know, the tempo, the formations, the quarterback deliver

6:10in the ball, the speed on the perimeter. So, you know, they're good. I still can test. They're going to win a lot of games. You know, they're going to they're going to go into their conference when a ton of games and we'll be hearing about them again later in the year. But I just think, you know, champ does a great job. He's a demanding coach. But yet, I think the players respect him and they love him because, you know, he's demanding in a way because he wants them to do it right and do it well so they can have success on game days. And I thought, like I said, a lot of guys played, a lot of guys played hard. I know we weren't perfect, but, you know, I just think it was a good start. I knew we'd have some growing pains today, which we did. I mean, I, I, that's understandable. Now we got to fix some of those growing pains going into next week. mentioned earlier that they forced three turnovers in that game. That is a pretty good day of work. And it does not sound like that was just an accident or a coincidence. What goes into forcing three turnovers in the lead up to the season and Sarc had a really detailed answer here? I think it's a, you know, it's one thing to say. It's all about the ball. It's another two

7:14practice it. And we practice it every day. You know, we do a turnover circuit every day, whether it's offense versus defense. And you guys have been there on those practices and training camp when we do that coming right out and right out of stretch. I mean, we go right to ball security stuff. We're ripping at the ball, whether when with, with defense is separate from the offense and they're working their turnover circuit. You know, like we practice picking up fumbles. And I know that sounds something like so simplistic, but like we call them country fumbles when you're alone and like racing, you can pick it up and run. And then there's city fumbles, whereas congested. And you need to just jump on it and fall on it. And those are two different styles. But we actually teach that and practice that. The same thing offensively. We do it. We do a turnover circuit every Thursday for five minutes, just taking care of the ball. And so I don't think it's on accident. I think it's our players understanding that the importance of it in the program and creating habits and then applying those habits in real time in the game. I think a lot like Ohio State Texas came right

8:17out of the gate looking pretty darn confident and really seemed pretty much in control most of the day. So how encouraging is that for a head coach to see that from your team to start the season? And this is an answer where you're going to hear a whole lot of names that you're going to be hearing all week long. Yeah, you know, again, I think that that comes from them competing against each other every day in practice. You know, I think there's something to be said for there's nothing like competition and there's nothing like having to go against good players every day. And Trevor Goosby and Colin Simmons go out at every day. Melvin Ciani and Lance Jackson and Zena go out at every day. You know, Kate Phillips has got a guard, Ryan Wingo and Cam Coleman every day, Grace and little synonym at Mosley going out at every day, Hollywood and Raheem go out at every day, Justin Crier and Nick Towns and go out like they got to go all they got to compete with each other. And at the level they compete at, it's so high in practice that when the game comes,

9:20I just feel like there's a real sense of confidence for them knowing, man, if he's as good as that guy go against every day, I'm still going to be okay. And if he's not, man, I'm really going to be okay. And I think that's where they get that confidence from to say, hey, they lean and trust one another. I think they believe in the guys on the other side of the ball too. When the other sides out there, I think the offense believes we're about to get a turnover. I think the defense is like, hey, we're going to go score, you know, and let we get the ball when they get the ball back is going to be 14 and nothing. And so that's the cool part of this team. And you could hear the interactions and feel the interactions on the sidelines. And I really appreciate that stuff because when guys are getting up off the bench, greet one another and celebrate one another or picking a guy up after a tough play, that's the connection. That's the secret sauce that it's hard just to create it through thin air. You have to work at that stuff. And these guys have worked at it and it paid off

10:20today. Now we got to continue down that path as we go. And the last thing, what is it like to have someone like Will Mustchamp champ there to and the last thing, what is it like to have someone like Will Mustchamp there to run the defense? Pete Pukowski had been the defensive coordinator the past couple seasons, but this year, Sark brought in Mustchamp to really just be the head coach of the defense and just handle that side of the ball and let Sark kind of be the CEO and worry about the offense. So what is it like to be able to just sort of hand that off to Will Mustchamp and then get the results that they did? It was great. You know, he said Sark, we need a timeout. When they came out in a little weird formation, they shifted out and I trust them. If he said we needed a timeout, we needed a timeout in that moment because we weren't quite ready to be aligned to it all. And so there's a real level of trust. I can tell you already today, I was less on the defensive headset than I've been in the previous five years. You know, and allowed me to stay on the

11:24offensive headset, communicate more with AJ and Mike and Kyle and the guys on offense. I didn't feel like, hey, we're in good hands over there. And if there's an issue, he'll tell me, but and I think that helped. I think that helped in our adjustments on the offensive side of the ball, too. So, like I said, it was the first game. Again, we got we got stuff to fix and clean up, but but it was a good start. That is going to be one of many, many, many storylines.
