BONUS: Ohio State 56, Ball State 3 - Juck's Quick Hits

0:00All right, we got another bonus show for you and this is one we wanted to share because it features Chuck Melody and you may know him as Chuck on Bucks from YouTube, but he is our recruiting insider at BuckeyeInsiders.com. He's also helping us cover the team, Tony Gurderman and Chuck and I were there at the stadium on Saturday. We're doing post game shows a little bit differently this year. There's some new Big Ten rules so we can't do things quite the way we did in the past. And so one of the things we tried on Saturday was we let Chuck just kind of share some instant reaction thoughts. Basically as soon as the clock hit zero, those got posted to our YouTube channel, but we wanted to share him here as well because they were not included with the full post game show that we did the Buckeye Weekly podcast post game show that we shared in that Buckeye Weekly feed. And honestly, if you don't know, Chuck, we think you'll love him because to know, Chuck is to love him. He is one of the most likable people I have ever met in my entire life and is also an incredibly

1:01knowledgeable about Ohio State football or Ohio State recruiting and much more. So here are Chuck Melody's sort of instant reaction thoughts from the Buckeye's 56-3 win over Ball State. Appreciate you so much for joining us as the Ohio State game wraps. The opener over in the Buckeye is not just win, but cover that massive 50.5 spread. I predicted I think 56-6 here. The game ended 56-3 pretty dog on close on the day that Jim Trussell went up into the ring of honor. I think you can see it right behind me there. Yeah, it is on the screen. As he joins Woody Hayes in Maurice Claret, rang the victory bell. And I've heard that victory bell rang a couple of times now. Nobody has rung it as hard as Maurice. That thing was banging and that was awesome. So that's the way it kicked off today.

2:01And then we got to the action which started off with Julian Sain. Looking a little out of sorts in possession number one before he absolutely lit it up. The connection and we're just going to talk here quickly about our quick takeaways here from the game and get this up to you guys because we can't do our live show till an hour passes after the game ends. So we're going to get this up real quick. This will just be kind of like my main takeaways here from the game. The biggest things that stand out. The connection between Julian Sain and his three starting receivers, particularly Jeremiah, but also Devon McEwan and even Brandon Innis, the connection between those guys looked fantastic. And one of the things that we were looking for with this wide receiver crew and with this passing game this year was where these wide receiver routes can start to look a little different, a little traditionally Ryan Day like before 24 and 25. Things were a little bit different. And we saw a whole lot more creativity in those routes.

3:02One in particular that one that Brandon Innis made the best catch he made on the sideline there. He was in motion. It was just everything's looking different, Chris and great between Julian Sain in those starting wide receivers. And that was one of my main takeaways is Julian Sain goes 21 of 25. I'm not sure what the final yardage was as I've got 20 pieces of paper here, but it was a big day for Julian Sain in quarter number one. Of course, we then saw Luke Fahey come in as the second quarterback instead of Tavy in St. Clair. That'll be a long conversation that we'll let Tom and Tony have is we're going to stick to the big the bigger issues here. That certainly is a big issue, but not so much as it pertains to this year. We hope a big issue that does pertain to this year is the offensive line, of course. And I don't know how much you've been a believer in this offensive line. I think there's some buck I fans who feel that some portal shopping should have been done. I felt that you got the ingredients you need here for an excellent offensive line.

4:06And bringing in Art Smith to help Tyler Bowen, Art Smith, an offensive line guy who is an offensive coordinator wants to run the ball first. This did not look like that. What you had out here was a disappointing performance today in game one for the offensive line. As they rolled out with the starting line up that we thought it would be with Austin and Sarah Vell at right guard, Phil Daniels at right tackle. And possession number three, we had already flopped that around to give Vensicle at right guard and Austin at right tackle. Don't know what the reason was for sure. That very well may have been planned from the beginning before they started the game. But it also coincides with Phil Daniels having maybe his roughest performance since last year against Minnesota. He wasn't a good, well, excluding Miami, the Miami game, I don't really, I guess everybody had a bad game that day because Carson isn't a pet a pretty good day. But Phil, a rough day today in game number one, but honestly, I think you can say the same

5:10for the entire offensive line except for some spells. In the second half they looked a little better. But for a team that's been talking about running the ball with attitude all year long, for Ryan Day talking about how they were walking on water, the three interior guys. Last week he said they were walking on water. They were so excited about Art Smith and he was referring to Luke Montgomery, Austin, Sarah Vell and Carson Hinsman on the interior. And we expected to come out and not just see them dominate in the run game against a team like this who ball stated, not a Mac team that's just not like Toledo, like Michigan State played last night. This is a Mac team that's like, gambling, a really, really bad Mac team. In this offensive line should have got an noticeable push and been able to really bully them. And they weren't. I don't know what the yards for Kerry were. By halftime, but I believe it was under three. And it didn't look good. Of course, you do end up getting some explosive runs thanks to Bo Jackson who does what Ryan

6:15Day. And I think this will be our next takeaway is getting some explosive runs. Bo Jackson, Ryan Day told us, you know, just in this last press conference, but they brought it up all off season. They're working on breaking that last tackle and turning that 10 yard run who Bo Jackson we talked in the pre game show was top three in the country and 10 yard runs. But then when it goes to 15, he falls off the board. He took the 10 yard run today and he turned it into a broken tackle. Then a second broken tackle and took it. And we saw the same thing, out of Jacobi Jackson, who interestingly enough was the second back in, not Isaiah West. And I thought maybe this will last a series. Then it was two series. Then it was somebody else. Then it was three series. Don't understand why Isaiah West didn't see any time except for maybe a play in the first half until later on in the game with the entire second offensive line. They did him dirty. They did him real dirty. As he goes in there in the second offensive line comes in and things weren't so hot

7:19with a couple of those guys. Not sure why that was. Definitely did not expect to see Jacobi Jackson as the second back in. On a game like this, I thought we'd see them run through. I thought we'd probably even see favor a key by the fourth quarter. Maybe some turbo Rogers. None of that. We did get to see was legend Bay who started off the game with a terrible couple of decisions in the kick return game and totally redeemed himself with one of the more since like two sensational plays. The guy is just, you know, he's got it. He's got, you can see why Ryan, you know, as mad as he was about what happened in the first half with those special teams plays. It didn't matter. He was still putting him back out there to let him do that. And I totally agree with the decision. That was sensational. The defensive line we talked about in the pre game show. In the interior of the defensive line, do you have four starting caliber guys or do you have four just kind of under starting caliber guys?

8:21And that's why you can't make your mind up between Edrick Houston and James Smith and John Walker and Will Smith Jr. And what you got was Edrick Houston and John Walker coming out to start the game. I thought that both of them got handled pretty well to start the game. And James Smith was the most impactful of those defensive linemen on the interior today. Of course, what do we know about James Smith? He's a penalty machine when he was at Alabama. The very first play he makes at Ohio State income the penalties. It was like unbelievable. It's something we've talked about all of season. Got to cut down on the penalties, dumb decisions, and go make plays that we know he can make. And the first one here comes a penalty. I couldn't believe it. But he looked good. He looked real good all day. I thought one of the more interesting things was is the defense rolled out and we talked about Boa Ackinson for, I don't know, all off season. Everybody's saying Bo Ackinson going to be the starter. It just seemed like that was what was going to happen, right? Zion Grady comes out as the starter across from Ken Yada Jackson.

9:24Now that would have been the logical thing at the end of the year, right? Because he beat Bo Ackinson out. Sure enough, that's how it started today was Zion Grady. I don't know how much smoke and mirrors we saw today guys. There's a lot of smoke and mirrors most likely because you're rolling to Texas next week. But there were some interesting decisions and Zion Grady looked good. When Bo Ackinson came in, I didn't see it. I didn't see what by it. I mean, he had four tackles, right? So we got it on some action. But the athletic flexibility and the things they were trying to make a leap on, I didn't see any of that with my own eyes. We did see Jay Timins play a fantastic game in his first game, which we talked about in the pre-game again. Might have been the first game of a future NFL first rounder for the buck eyes as Jay Timins, not just played in the nickel and played excellent, but played outside corner in a couple of past breakups. In addition to that, Kari Wilder was an absolute dog.

10:25Kari Wilder got, I'll credit him with half an interception as he forced the ball state quarterback. He forced him to throw it into trouble and got TJ Alford a pick. So TJ Alford, Riley Petagion both looked really good and that was great to see them in the action. We're talking six tackles for Petagion, five tackles for Alford. They look good or a little in his debut and how his state looked really good. So a ton to take away and Tony and Tom will dive into this deeper, but I wanted to just give you the quick hitter.
