BONUS: Time and Change - The Most Impactful Transfers In Ohio State History
About this episode
On this episode of The Time and Change Will Surely Show, Tony Gerdeman and Juck Miletti look at the past, present, and future of Ohio State transfers.
Tony unveils his ranking of the 10 most impactful transfers in Buckeye history, including Justin Fields, Will Howard, Caleb Downs, Quinshon Judkins, Davison Igbinosun, Julian Sayin and more. But who deserves the No. 1 spot? Is it Downs, or should the quarterback who led Ohio State to a national championship get the nod?
Then Tony and Juck turn their attention to Ohio State's newest group of transfers. Could James Smith become a star on the defensive line? Is Devin McEwen capable of becoming one of the Buckeyes' next great receivers? What should we expect from Earl Little, Christian Alliegro, Beau Atkinson and the rest of the newcomers?
Finally, they look ahead to the next transfer cycle. If Julian Sayin heads to the NFL, will Ohio State have to find another starting quarterback in the portal? And with major decisions looming along the offensive line, could the Buckeyes once again be shopping for veteran help up front?

Hello everybody, welcome to the time and change will surely show I'm Tony Gurderman here with Jack Muletti when we take one Ohio State topic and discuss the past present and future of that topic and Jack today. Right before the season gets going I want to talk about transfers and the impact the transfers have had over the years most the most recent years being the bigger impact. And I think that's a big impact. But when I when we decided to do this show and I said I would put my top 10 list together so that you would not have to do this you would not be subject to this was there at least a little relief or did you want to put together your top 10 list of the most impactful transfers of all time. This one I mean there would have been more relief with the wide receiver one but there was a little relief here I do like looking at yours and then being able to critique it rather than doing my own that's usually more fun.
Yeah, always better to critique and the unfunny thing about the last show we did on the wide receivers. We're doing this via video right and so I put the the graphic of the top 20 receivers of all time but I didn't read it out so then I had to go back for the audio side and like oh no splice in the reading of the list. Oh no. I've learned my lesson there but I do kind of want to start off by going ahead and going with my list of the 10 most impactful transfers in Ohio's to history. And I was telling Tom about this we did it live Buck I weekly on Thursday about the difficulties that I was having with this so much in fact that I've changed my top two but I'll start with 10 that is Wilkes Merrick transfer from Ohio it was a buck I for two years Ryan Day still calls them the best blocking tight end in the nation and they'll stand by that.
The next number nine just Simmons number eight Seth McLaughlin and number seven Jonah Jackson and I want to stop there because I think people forget about Jonah Jackson. And it was awesome I think it was an all American but the reason I have him head of McLaughlin and Simmons is because he played the entire season but I think if either one of those guys plays the entire season in 2024 they would be ahead of Jonah Jackson that was exactly my thought process when I was going through there I'm like well man I don't know Seth McLaughlin he he was really something that year and then I'm like well he didn't play the full season well Simmons didn't either. So I had the same thought process in that order you know those guys obviously kicked off the national championship season. McLaughlin lasted longer in the season but either way they didn't finish the season somebody else popped in and was able to do it and to me when we talk about these transfer rankings because there are some of them that are part of that national championship team it really plays in and it factors into me where I'm talking kind of like all right
wins over replacement what if this guy wasn't on the team and it was somebody else would they have still won the national championship we'll talk a little more about that as we move forward but pulling back up here or graphic. All right yeah and I'm with you because the fact that they won the national championship without those two guys that lessons the impact here now I know the 2019 Buckais did not win at all but Jonah Jackson had of him Julian saying it's six for me I originally had him at four but I decided to move him back basically because he has not won a national championship yet and we'll talk about what that could mean if you were to do that and then at five Davis Nick Benosan for Quinch on Judkins do you have any issue with these three. I don't have any issue you know looking at IGB with with three seasons of work I think it is what really sticks out to me putting him into that top five.
You know originally I mean I think maybe somebody if we're talking just one season would look at that and say I don't know if he belongs right there but yet three full seasons it really felt like he was a buckai from the start of his career by the time he left so no no issue with any of that. I know some people have an issue with calling Julian Sain a transfer which is you know he did transfer he wasn't a portal so that's he is a transfer. And then of course my top three top three of number three Justin Fields number two will Howard and number one Caleb Downs and I'm telling you that I had will Howard number one because of the fact that they were both impactful winning the national championship but quarterback is more impactful than safety. However I flipped it back again Jack because I'm penalizing will Howard because I'm thinking will will Howard could do it other quarterbacks could have done it as well but well he's the one that did it so I'm not even sure if I agree with myself now I just know I'm going to get let's blow back for having Caleb Downs here because it's also correct the correct answer but I think will Howard is the correct answer as well.
I think your logic is exactly right I want to hit on the Julian Sain transfer thing first it irks the hell out of me that he is a transfer it really does because you know but by all rights this is an Ohio State player from the start of his career till he leaves Ohio State but for me you missed out on him in recruiting he's a transfer he signs somewhere else he went somewhere else he put on their uniform he has to be considered a transfer. Now the number one number two thing I struggled with this for sure and I also agree with you that absolutely in the eyes of most this is going to be an automatic Caleb Downs between the two of them and I do think that there are several quarterbacks in that year 2024 who may have been able to come in and do what will Howard did but I also think that that defense was so important and I think that's a good thing. It's so good that there were other safeties you could have gotten in the portal and still won the national championship as well and I'm just trying to sit here in way that between in addition to that Caleb's got two years of excellent service to Will's one but the way will perform down the stretch of that season the leadership it just feels to me like that was the tougher
the tougher one to replace is the way that came together was kind of magical in that run and while I do think there's a lot of quarterbacks who could have had the same season and the regular season like that and was a little bit of magic and he was the guy and in all that year that entire year I felt the way like what I'm saying like I think he's doing great I think there's a lot of quarterbacks who could be doing this in college football right now with this squad but towards the end after watching that run I started feeling a bit different that this is just a little bit special here right time right place right guy and for that reason I'm going to put the quarterback of the national championship team at 2024 at number one. Well hey it's kind of like the the Kobe and Shaq thing where Caleb downsize at one of national championship without Will Howard Kobe didn't win one without Shaq and so you take Will Howard off of the 2025 team boom no national championships so you've got that going as well but the 2024 season with Will Howard that at by the end of the season it was like who else would you rather have it's like when people would complain about Ryan Day and winning in fire it's like who else would you rather have
and the fit is the perfect fit for the time in the place and Will Howard set records for games with 80% completion percentage he was safe with the ball he had just enough adversity to really let it fuel him he had just enough more than just enough personality to have the fans rally around him with the the signetti stuff and things like that where he would get after people and really in his one year endeared himself to Ohio State fans so I'm like like I said this is a I'm not punting on it because I think both answers are correct but I would just say I had I had to revisit and begrudgingly put Caleb down here because initially as my first thought is like quarterback is more important and like Tom and I were talking he's like well if you take Craig Crenzo off the 2002 team they're not winning it's like you take so many people off that team they're not winning it and really I think that's that's going to be the same thing you say more and more about any team that wins it if this guy wasn't there the steps and Bennett Bennett wasn't at Georgia
kind of stock that's not winning it for them you know so you remove Will Howard and we saw what happened you know we'll see hey if they win it this year without Caleb downs I'm moving Caleb downs down the list. Seriously that's two yeah what about Justin fields at number three you got him at number three obviously again you got a multi multi years of service a guy who obviously played great and maybe the he was the first big time big time transfer winning yeah yeah well and like I think he is overall just like the most complete quarterback that Ohio State has ever had and if you had one drive to to get 85 yards he's probably the quarterback I'm taking um but yet you know Will Howard can do a lot of the things in terms of just picking up that third down however
in any manner than it takes but that's why I think Caleb downs and Will Howard are the top two because Justin fields should be number one but it's like well those two guys are just a tick higher and and but if Justin fields and one if Ohio State wins the title in 2019 and through no fault of his own did they lose then he's good luck matching that in 2019 and 2020 what he did um it's interesting because the the number of transfers like I wanted to make sure so I went back and I looked and the first major transfer that I ever remember was Kent Graham coming over from Notre Dame and I didn't remember the transfer I just remember them talking about Kent Graham as the Notre Dame transfer and that was like 1991-92 and then you have to go into like Anthony Schlagel in 2005 until there's another like non-Juco like right big time transfer and then to like Justin Boran and then stuff starts to to trickle in more but again none of those guys
some other guys that I was considering in that list uh Tray Sermon I think he had a few good games Philip Daniels I think is still out there um Max Claire Lorenzo styles I think maybe the most underrated guy on this list based on his season last year definitely low styles is the guy I mean he's in the top 20 I don't know did you see like you got a feel of how many at this point there have been over the last couple five years I mean there were there were plenty that I didn't even bother putting on the list you know um but like I didn't even put enough together to get a top 20 I've got like on my list of guys that I would consider in the top 10 right there's 16 okay and and so like if you're outside of that and and those would be you know those are the guys every year that you know maybe playing a little bit like Logan George and you know things that just yeah clearly didn't pan out and um but I'm wondering
does it require a national championship but I guess it does for for Julian Sand to move up to number one on this list yeah I think by the criteria that I put Will Howard over Caleb Downs it would have to require Julian Sand wins a national championship to to bump him over that as well uh I think he's got a shot man and if he does he's absolutely number one after the season he had last year with an undefeated regular season beating Michigan and getting invited in New York uh comes back and wins it all that is the best ever and then we'll have the real argument over can you really call him a transfer no it would be really bad if he wins the he's been and he and he does the Joe Burrow thing where I'm gonna thank Alabama and I'm gonna thank Ohio State it's like no no no no you can only think one of those um but yeah like winning it all at this point because if he just has another season like he did last year then he's probably at four where I had him to begin with
and it's just it's gonna be hard to move past Justin Fields without a national championship for quarterback for me but that's that's my thought I'm with you we we had the same what top five quarterbacks in order I think so yeah yeah I'm with you um so I think this is probably our our most cut and dry in agreement one of these that we've done yet um but we did have the same top four quarterbacks so yeah good list tone you did well and there was no uh there was no mathematical criteria it was just you uh putting on your thinking cap which says buck i insiders by the way I still don't have one of those um yeah I'll send I'll get you take care okay get you take care no um so that's that's the past a little bit of the present but I want to move to the present and talk about this year's transfers because there are a number of them and the impact that we will see here I guess my first question to you and we're talking you know Kyle Parker Devon McEwan
Earl Little Dominic Kelly Jacarby Jackson Terry Moore Connor Hawkins Quay Roo saw James Smith John Walker Mason Williams Christian Allegro the main ones of those guys who do you think has the best shot this year of moving into the tent into the top 10 and what would that take of moving into the top 10 okay so I was thinking first round and I was thinking about this last week and I guess that would kind of correlate there yeah but I think that James Smith has the best opportunity to potentially be a guy that that comes out and he's always been fast in twitchy now the amount of power that he has and I mean just back from the spring the amount of power that I saw coming out of him just a different level than even a guy like Edrick who's bigger than him and then when you already want you know watch his film at Alabama he beats his man
often he is like win rate whatever that you know that you know they do that I'm gonna have to go look at that but like the amount of times he beats his man but then doesn't make a play does it have his eyes in the backfield overruns it gets four yards into the backfield like kind of like if we can get this all together up here this guy can be so good then he comes to Ohio State his body is better he's stronger uh certainly seems like he's in a great headspace which not always maybe wasn't there I don't know it just didn't seem like things were jive and tons of penalties fighting uh scrap it on the field stuff like he's got a chip on his shoulder but if everything comes together at Ohio State finishing school for transfers um I think that he has the talent to play himself into the first ground he's obviously gonna have the opportunity here and I also think that like he's you know with the other guys here that he's not officially named the star but I think he's gonna get a ton of snaps you know they got this four man crew where we're not sure who's gonna
earn I think they're gonna earn those snaps as they go like who's gonna be the top dog there but to me I think he's got the best chance at squeaking into the first round um which may not also be the same as on this list right because there's a couple others that a few different positions where they could potentially end up on this list by really balling out at Ohio State but not first round because of where they play but uh yeah and also just the overall like physical perhaps limitations are not being that the right metric and some can yeah hold them back as well like a k-dum curry for instance could definitely write this list yeah and and for sure and so we did a buck I recently we weekly recently um time and I did uh sitting there in buck I grow talking about uh the defensive tackles the last couple of years they've had stars and do you do you need an absolute defensive tackle star or can you just win it all with very good players and I'm interested in your thoughts on that because it sounds
like your thought is that James Smith could absolutely be that star and if he's if he is great but if they're all just you know um like better than Taiwan Malone last year better than Edgar Houston last year but Edgar Houston should be better this year but like a notch below Tileek Williams and Ty Hamilton and certainly a notch below uh Kaden McDonald but can you is committee good enough and Matt Patricia says they're going to go by go by committee early on but the committee can be really really good but do you need somebody to become a does somebody here need to be a star it's a great thought exercise and when we talk about these guys you know is it a situation where you've got four starters or you got four guys who aren't quite stars you know what I mean we're not going to know until we see it but I think you can win a national
championship without having that one super alpha dominant guy in the middle but I think you would also need two real game records on the outside if that's the case um because to me when we talk about national championships I think the thing most national champions have in common uh is either a great defensive line or a defensive line that's playing great down the stretch and to me when you get into those really tough games and I was just doing a show earlier talking about Phil Daniels and his way I mean well you know that was against Rubin Bay and I'm like well that's the kind of guy you got to beat in those games that's what's most important and it's just like that that always seems to be the difference and we look back even the the ones Ohio State's lost those big time game national championship games like it's always about the D line you can point right to it so can you win it without a dominant guy on the interior with a committee of four solid guys
staying fresh and some really great linebackers yeah does this team have that up the middle not sure but you definitely need some studs on the outside yeah well and Ryan Day seems pretty pretty confident regarding his defensive tackles and I also think um you can disguise some of that you can add in a defensive and you know we've seen Kenyatta Jackson play inside we'll see what Matt Patricia does we also saw Indiana do pretty well with some undersized and not blue chip defensive linemen defensive tackles I mean they were losing defensive linemen like every every other every other week for a while there and they were still able to disguise that with good technique solid play fundamentals and scheme and I think certainly Ohio State has been focused on that for them um I'm the way that Jeremiah Smith talked about Earl Little in the spring or didn't talk about him after starting to talk about him and like held himself back as like you know
you'll just have to wait and see I'm wondering if he's going to be able to make this list however what I thought he was going to be in the spring is certainly not what he is now when I was thinking in the spring he was going to be um Keanu Te Scott from Miami a kind of the chaos merchant at nickel now he's the strong safety who is basically Caleb Downs-ish in terms of what they're going to be asking him to do some of while Jalen McLean is the free safety and J. Timmans is the freshman nickel so I don't know that there's enough there for Earl Little to get there this year but if they are aggressive with him and they're moving him into the backfield and things like that where you make plays you you get people to notice you you have some exciting moments I think that is something that could happen but if I look at this list and I'm thinking exciting moments I'm looking at Devon McKeown and the way that Ryan Day has talked about him the way that I asked Devon Sanchez
about him on Wednesday like when Ryan Day says he's as good as we've had here that's me is like that's calm down slow down I don't know that you should be saying something like that but they all really seem to believe in Devon McKeown so I think he might be somebody that endears himself pretty quickly to Ohio State fans and then the question becomes can they keep him for next year you know that comment was so kind of just nonchalantly tossed in there Tony when he says you know if you ask people around here you know a lot of them will say he's as good as we've had and we're talking about a Ohio Statewide receiver saying as good as we've had to me says that's the first round talent that's what that says to me and that doesn't seem like something he would say if he didn't mean it we've obviously seen a couple first down like plays we saw first
round type plays in preseason didn't see it in spring the the film at UTSA doesn't scream first rounder to me but I just don't think he'd be saying that if they weren't seeing something really exciting behind the scenes here and like we've seen a couple flashes but still I never thought this was that kind of guy even though I thought man he's gonna have a good season likely the number two guy in receptions and yards for this team and now we know he can also make some good downfield plays as well which we've talked about but never did I think like first round type of guy if that's the case absolutely he could fly up this list and if you can get two out of them well hell I mean if he plays like a first rounder yeah that's probably that's that's not happening so um but yeah definitely and with Earl I don't know if we've had a transfer come in before where our perception throughout the offseason has changed so much from the time he signed on
to the time and we still haven't played a game yet which you know when he signed on it was like well this can't be the the big time safety they're bringing in and this is just a guy right gotta be another oh they got Terry Moore all right now I really like the year-old little signing right now the pressure isn't there for him to be that guy uh and as we head into the season you know you just none of these guys have really been able to hide the enthusiasm and the fact that I mean they just talk about him like kind of like they talk about Kinyano like he's just a dude's dude man don't don't mess with that guy you know and that's so exciting I think those type of guys when we talk about lists like these really endearing themselves to the fans real quick playing some hard hard brand of football and that could certainly bump him up on a list like this but I was thinking the other day and a guy I've not been incredibly high on because of the way I thought originally they were gonna play him was Kwe Rousseau just playing him like another one of the defensive ends I didn't
think that worked out well and it seems to me like we're gonna get a little more of a specialized version of the Kwe Rousseau role which I always thought all right that is the ticket and now I think there's the potential and when we talk about SACS this year I think it's gonna go Kinyano Jackson and then potentially Allegro maybe Rousseau right in there with him and uh if he could get up you know to eight SACS or something be kind of like the SAC master yeah that would really stand out as well yeah I mean he's he said it like I'm gonna be a specialized past russia that was the role that they explained to him and he was he was fine with it and then also in the the oaky front like a five two outside linebacker which is on the line of scrimmage to do some things there but mostly just a past russia and you know if that's if that's all not all you're doing but you know I'm in there to generally they're going to be passing when I'm in there you can just get after it and so it'll be interesting to see what his his success rate is they're real quick back with McEwen and
I think you and I did a reaction show after practice number two where it was like oh that this guy looks like a first rounder like what he did out there looked like a first rounder because we've seen them at Ohio State and he did everything that those guys were doing and he was high point in the ball and all of this and then talk with Devon Sanchez like about it yesterday he's like he can high point it if it's just an intermediate route and it's too high he can go get it he can catch stuff in traffic and that's everything that we've been seeing I like the fact that Sanchez is like I like going against him because it's completely different than Jeremiah two very different receivers and that's what defense is are going to face as well just two very different guys who are as he said the same speed and he said I know everybody thinks JJJ is fast but I think Devon is just as fast so you know just just somebody to think about there you mentioned the opinions changing from the time of the signing until now Terry Moore is certainly one of them because now it looks like you know the right day said he'll roll in there somewhere and it's like okay we'll see Kyle Parker just
finally getting back into the camp situation probably not going to be playing this week who knows is going next week boy if they could get John Walker to be making it into the top 20 of this list I think that would be huge I think James Smith will make that but overall they need they need some of these guys we haven't mentioned Kristen and I grow I know early on you from watching his as Wisconsin stuff your little little concern where are you at now with him I feel pretty dog on good about a leg grow I don't think I'm as high as I mean I've heard some people talk about him like you know he could potentially be a first-rounder I don't think he's a val a leg row yeah I don't personally see that kind of athleticism that could put him into the first round but there's a whole lot of stuff that he does really really well and it patricious so good it put in guys where they do things really really well you know like for instance talking about him in the arvel roll like put him in that role uh against Washington spying on the quarterback
he's gonna get absolutely smoked like that isn't happening there's a lot of things that arvel can do that he can't do yes he's a similar size in length that change of direction that's not there um tracking down arch last year like he could handle some of the stuff like that you know like arch is a good athlete I think he can do some of it really well um I think he can get after the passer obviously we've seen that strength when he's getting after the passer straight line speed is really good uh so I think it's gonna be a really good solid player for for these book guys but um that kind of level like you know first round type pushing into that type of talent or conversation that I don't see but definitely better I feel much better about it than I did right at the beginning there when he was signed I will say I think Devon McEwan's gonna be the best transfer why do you say we're transferring Ohio State history selling out Kyle Parker that early tone because I'm thinking like uh you know Chris Vance doesn't count he was juco and I just I don't know any others I don't count Bryson Rogers although I guess he did go into the portal so if we're
using that as as the uh the definition of a transfer but like it's not something we've really seen we we have not seen much of that and so um we'll see if Kyle Parker can catch up he is he is playing catch up at this point so that's that's the present we've caught up now I want to talk about the future in terms of where are they going to go into the portal next year wait a second I want to talk about more sure sure I want to talk about Bo Ackinson because I think Bo Ackinson is one of the most consequential players on this team this year and when we talk about Bo Ackinson this is clearly a guy that we would all agree under achieved year one as a transfer what if he now comes year two in his in his you know above the average right like he's uh he's a plusper kind of player um definitely makes the list right because then I think he frees up KJ to be full on KJ and I don't think
I don't want to maybe it maybe I do think I just don't know if there's someone behind him who has the potential the size the strength to be able to do what Bo could potentially do and I just don't know if you can get full KJ unless this pans out with Bo. Yeah I think that's a very good point I will I did think it was interesting Ryan Day on Wednesday when he was mentioning the defensive ends and who we're going to be going to be playing or the defensive line who's going to be playing he said Kinyata Jackson certainly Zion Grady that was the second guy he mentioned was Zion Grady and it was like that's I've never heard that before where he's that high up on just just the mentioning list it's not a pecky order per se but I'm with you with Bo Ackinson if he can do it Kinyata did last year and just being that strong side and Kinyata can go to be Kaden Curry like to me that's the plan I don't know if they're going to be able to do that but if they can that's great and if he's as productive as Kinyata I don't know if he can do that but that's also great the way they're talking about him confidence is very high I will say
if he hasn't had a standing year this year watch him move up the list because he could have left he could have gone back into the transfer portal because this wasn't working out for it. I thought odds are he would have yeah right just go ahead and just disappear into the night Logan George did it like other players they go ahead and do it that was not his intention he's like I'm here for a reason on you know there's a bigger plan here that's going on and so he would just focused on making sure that he can be as good as he can so he can play this year and I think that's me is that's all high state fans should be asking yep it's just you may it may not work out but give it give him your all and and see what you can do but I think that will endure him now lunatic friends may never may never like him if he doesn't you turn it on but this is guy that could have gone could have left and was like no I want to be here and I state one at a mere so I think that's another thing to keep in mind so like you know what are we talking about six and a half sacks something like that I don't know just doesn't even really have
to be sacks just hold up and allow everybody else to do the work you know that sort of thing I mean just be typical strong side defense event it's not sexy generally yeah yeah I'm with you that would be awesome and that would be a hell of a story and and and very you know those are the type of guys that yeah that becomes a great story when you stick through it and and become that guy and he certainly sounds like a great guy I like if you hear him talk you feel this sincerity yeah so that's great so moving to the the future Chuck with a conversation that is going to take place a lot over the next several months if we're looking at like what positions would they go into the portal for if Julian saying leaves are you going into the portal for quarterback you know this has become so interesting to me in the fact that if for instance you know we don't know yet who that backup
quarterback is going to be let's say Luke Fahey balls out week one against ball state and tabian doesn't is this now like all right it's going to be Luke Fahey for week two and then we're going to take it week by week or does this become Luke Fahey is the backup quarterback in which case he's going to be the guy unless he really screws up taking those number two reps throughout the season and then you're absolutely bringing in a starting caliber transfer because you're not going to feel anywhere near confident rolling into that off season with those two guys Fahey and year two and tabian who hasn't taken those second team reps you haven't even seen him right and you got to make this decision before the seasons over so if that's the situation number one that for sure is a transfer quarterback if tabian is the backup if he wins this and he's coming in doing well in the limited action we get to see him after you know in a blowout when Julian gets
pulled I still think you're bringing in at this point a starting caliber guy because you're just not going to have a big enough sample size to roll in to next year's squad and you're at Ohio state you got to have that position squared away you got to feel totally confident you got it squared away and now because now Tony there are no excuses to not have a quality quarterback none you know it doesn't matter what it costs you sacrifice wherever you have to to make it happen but you can't roll into the season unless you're sure I got a guy who's not going to stink it up who's ready for the job and I just don't know if tabian is not able to do that now if you're going to be able to have enough confidence to say that in just a few months is when this decision needs to be made you know what do you think well I think for one you've got to play them to know whether that
this is going to be a thing for two you got to know Julian's decision and he's he's not out all of the draft boards right now because he's just a red shirt sophomore and he's not six five to twenty five you know he's six one two fifteen which is going to limit him until people see him performing again until maybe it's his agent makes it known like yes we're looking too head to the NFL and then more people will will take him more seriously and as he continues to show things but like they need to know because the declaration date is the same time as the portal being open like it it's mid to late it's mid-January and that's when you know stuff is still going on so yeah and then you've got to you know how many quarterbacks are you going to miss out on before you're able to go and get somebody and somebody like the the Cal quarterback JKS you know like somebody like that where you've got a proven starter but I also wonder do they want somebody who has more mobility and will run a little bit more and you know but it will be interesting to
see like can you see enough from your backups this year to be okay with sticking with them and it's so funny because like that's how it always used to be and things worked out fine like how much did you see from CJ Stroud in 2020 you saw him carry the ball once and hand it off some some more and then in 2021 he lit it up so it's just it's a very different world where if you don't have a quarterback that is proven you're either handicapping yourself or you better be right and but if you're a high state recruiting quarterbacks you should be right and usually historically have been under under Ryan Day so with the recruiting quarterbacks though he's done better with the transfers you know that's true that's true yeah so but been able to field one right I mean yeah gonna make the right decision I have faith that that he's gonna make the right decision right that he's gonna know the right thing to do but I'm more just enamored with the possibility that
it just his felt like I guess so long because Tavian's been yeah a high state commit for so long that we knew the kind of natural order of this for so long in an era where nobody knows the order of their at quarterback anymore felt like at Ohio State we knew we got a kid who isn't transferring anywhere we'll sit on the bench and wait year two as a top three quarterback which doesn't always happen sometimes they're looking to split town if they're not starting by year two and it just felt like we knew and now it's like do we know I don't know I to be clear though I still think his ceiling is every bit as high as I always have yeah I just think it's gonna take him longer to get there but that's fine he's still got 15 years of football to play I just think he came in under developed compared to his peers and when you see a guy that is coming in with similar development to Julian Sain like Fahey it's it sticks out when you got the two of them side by side yeah it's kind
of changed the narrative a little bit because like six months ago it was you know what if what if Julian decides to come back like that's gonna create a huge issue you know because you're right man that was a big conversation do you even want him back if you would cost cost you Tavian St. Clair and now it's like you know what are they gonna do if Julian doesn't go he doesn't you know come back you're gonna have to go into the portal clearly and it's like well you're not necessarily there is you're not starting the quarterback this year you're gonna give him another year of development to hopefully get to that point but I mean it would be crazy to look at this and with no spring portal because you've got to decide you know art we'll just see how things go with Luke Fahey and Tavian St. Clair and Brady Edmonds and I just I don't see that happening right now now maybe we'll see something it only takes a couple of games for somebody to be convinced like you know like Twain Haskins won the job in 2018 because of the 2017 Michigan game you know that sort of thing if somebody steps
up in in some manner you know JT Barrett in 2014 even though then he kind of lost a job in 2015 because of what happened in like 2014 like something like that happens this year and maybe convinced of somebody but man that's gonna be as of now then Tony you're saying uh you think that you're you're leaning more towards not a transfer but a starting caliber trend not a Justin Martin a starting caliber transfer that's where you're leaning right now if you had to decide right now on what you think's gonna happen yes because of all of the money spent on all on on the roster if you're not and I know they're spending money on Tavian but like if if you don't have somebody that is I don't say worthy ready to handle that roster then you've wasted all this money yeah so it's like you you have to invest in that position so that you're not and they have invested you have to also spend correctly at that position so that you're not spending stupidly
everywhere else and trying to win in spite of your quarterback so it's it's it's it's it's it's it may create some uncomfortable conversations but you know that's that's what happens now that it's professional football so everybody has agreed to this when you sign the NIL and you you get the big box it's like well you're no longer a kid and you are now a full grown adult so you know as as Urban Mire says that's life in a big city so you know welcome to life in a big city I'm with you and I do agree I mean that's I said it the other day I think that you you know at this point we're not looking at a Justin Martin type guy you're bringing in a guy who's gonna compete and likely a guy who's gonna come in the favorite with already some experience under his belt and it's just so different and and like I said it doesn't matter what it takes money-wise you have to do it even if you know you have to say all right we're not gonna spend this money on Fargus
coming in like you have to do it you have to deal with what you got to deal with down the road but you can't waste all that money and roll into a season with a quarterback who can't win it and the further we look at this like we'll see what happens this year but if we go with third year in a row and it's yet again in the national championship game two guys who started somewhere else who went and played at this team and now they're in the national championship I don't know if um starting a first year guy is going to be something I'll ever want to do I mean yeah you have to be in a certain circumstance to do that at quarterback and whether that's paying you know $12 million for price under whatever whatever but yeah like it shouldn't be a situation that you run into but I will say like in terms of the quarterbacks that Ohio State has signed out of high school under Ryan Day going back to you can't really count the 2017 class because
that class is pretty much done when he got here but like Kyle McCord and CJ Stroud are the only guys that that have started that he's had as high school you know commits basically and then sign and I've written this thing for every year now like the you google Ryan Day quarterback timeline Buckeye Insiders you'll find a long like all every every commit quarterback commit every quarterback decommit every quarterback transfer out transfer in all of this different kinds of drama with all of the quarterbacks and that's that's not Ohio State you know that's not unique to Ohio State that's that's the position that everybody plays that's the quarterback position that everybody deals with and so it is different than everything else so like I never really liked talking about transfers now it's you talk about it wherever but like quarterback was like the one position you could kind of just speculate on or I was okay speculating on it because it's like it's different and the likelihood of signing at Ohio State as a high school quarterback and starting at Ohio State as a college quarterback
not high right compared to you know other positions let me give you a nightmare scenario or perhaps a dream scenario and this will be the last thing offensive line next year do they go into the portal and I ask this with the thought that they have four starters with remaining eligibility but they also have five guys who could leave so like you don't know where you're going to be and this you can lose all five of your starters if Ian Moore is an outstanding left tackle as a junior like one year starting I get it but there's going to be an enticement for him to go like Luke Montgomery still has a year if he wants it Austin Cereval it still has a year if he wants it Philip Daniel still has a year if he wants it but at some point like this there's a situation a certain scenario we're all five of those guys go if they go then yes you're definitely going into the portal as best you can even though these these decisions are all happening at the same time in terms of the NFL decision and
the portal decision but say they lose three of those guys and return Philip Daniels and Ian Moore so you know you've got to replace that interior we know they like their interior of Josh Padilla, Jacob, Gabe Van Sickle, Max Riley I think is probably the guy one of those three that starts and that's in its situation but I think that's what's going to happen Tony I think you're going to lose the three interiors if I'm guessing and I was actually just kicking this around in my head the other day do you feel confident with a new quarterback a new center two new guards young guards brand new starters the thing is when we look at the offensive line room it's getting loaded up but I think this might be the one situation where you it's almost like kind of like all right one last time we might need to dip into the portal and get at least one veteran interior guy here that we know can lock down one of these spots you know bringing a guy that you're 100% sure and you
can spend a million dollars on Ethan Anjana what type that comes in and just locks down a spot for the whole year sign it and forget it it might be this year if that scenario happens but I also at the same time if you were to tell me all right you're rolling with Josh Padilla jake cook and Max Riley I would feel pretty good about it I like all those guys just like all three at once is the problem like any one of them might feel great about it but all three at once makes me feel squeamish but this is how it used to be right this is normal it is but the same time when we had this turnover like it was we were always squeamish with this much yeah but I think they kept Josh Padilla around to be the starting center next year I think you're right so but there you go thoughts on the transfers I'm gonna ask you folks out there give me your top five your top five transfers all time at Ohio
state and I will say I ask this on Twitter and then I had Grog go ahead and tally it all up and it had Caleb Downs number one Justin Fields number two tied with Will Howard and then and Quinch on Juddkins actually tied there as well and then Josh Simmons and then Davis and Nick Benos and Julian Stain tied for what would I guess be seventh instead of fifth but what do you guys think I other than Caleb Downs okay like who's number one other than Caleb Downs are we crazy for saying you know what it might just be Will Howard here's your thoughts on that and of course we're also gonna be talking about this over at Buckeye and Siders.com the absolute best way to support what we do is to find us over there and invite you there sign up become a member and would love to talk to you so that will do it from here thank you all for tuning in and we will talk to you all later
