Carolina Field Hockey Primed for 2026 Run, Erin Matson Joins | Inside Carolina Interviews

North Carolina’s field hockey season officially gets underway on Friday in Winston-Salem as the Tar Heels face nationally ranked Michigan at 3:30pm in the first leg of the ACC/BigTen Challenge. Erin Matson’s team completes the challenge on Sunday against the Iowa Hawkeyes in another ranked matchup to open a tough 2026 slate. 

Matson joined Inside Carolina’s Tommy Ashley and Spencer Haskell for a wide ranging discussion including the challenges of the constant unknowns dealt coaches by the NCAA and court system when it comes to putting together a roster and managing all aspects of a strong program in the ever changing era of college athletics on and off the field. 

Matson highlights her roster, including veteran captains Charly Bruder and Grace Pottebaum, goalies Merritt Skubisz and Tessa Shahbo, and newcomers Sofia Ferri and Imme De Leeuw among others.
