Welcome in, I see daily for Friday, September 11th. First of all, it's been 25 years since September 11 happened. That blows my mind. And when you think about that day, all of this stuff that we talk about is irrelevant. But we need to talk about it. But shout out and thoughts and all of that stuff to everybody that was directly affected by September 11th. 25 years later, we've seen on the news is still a thing is still the after effects of the event, not only for us in America, but for

1:02the people that were there, it's unbelievable. Let's don't it feels like sort of superficial or insignificant to talk about football, but we're going to do it. I see daily for Friday, September 11th. You got to do these every day. You're stepping in. Greg Barnes will be back next week. I've had the pleasure of having some fun with these days this week. So let's see if we can keep it up. Carolina recruiting. Obviously, the news broke this week that North Carolina could not have recruits in for East Tennessee State for violations about photographs. I guess on the field, the clips on weekend last year. Don, just your take on that. I want to get into some deeper things about it, but just overall, a lot of people say it's a nothing burger. A lot of people say it's insignificant. I do find it interesting that the rule was very much wanted by the previous staff at North Carolina. And they got what they wanted. And yeah, here we are. We carried on the panel before

2:05it. Yeah, just to be clear, we're under the understanding it wasn't just one violation. It was a group of them that kind of accumulated basically. But that was the one that we've been able to to confirm with multiple sources. And it seems like it's kind of, for lack of a better word, the main one. But to answer your question, yeah, I mean, this is a lot of people look at it and they're like, this is stupid. But one, it's the rule. And two, it's the rule that schools wanted. And we kind of talked about it a little bit on the message boards, but there's a little bit of prisoners dilemma going on when it comes to the to college football NCAA. And so there are so many rules that yes, they are stupid, but you have to have them in place so that everybody is kind of hopefully following, falling in line and following these rules. And a better example are the dead

3:08periods. The whole reason why we have dead periods is basically to force coaches to take breaks, to take vacations. You know, it's easy to say, I'm not going to host recruits in July. But when your arch rival is hosting recruits in July, you start to kind of think, maybe I should not take vacation with my family and I should host recruits in July. But if you know, everybody is taking a vacation in July or everybody is a dead period in July, then at least you can kind of do other things. So it's kind of the same sort of mentality is where we have to set these rules so that everybody is in line. And for the most part, people follow these rules. I mean, we rarely, I mean, I know every once in a while we hear about someone violating a dead period rule or in this situation with North Carolina with the photos. But for the most part, if you consider how many people are involved in college football, there's not a whole lot of violations of these rules.

4:10And as you mentioned, the impetus of this rule was schools wanted to get away from this photo shoots. And what ultimately was happening is, well, the photo shoot, what is and they are still allowed for official visits. The recruit comes in, they get to put on the gear, they get to put on, the jerseys, all this sort of stuff, they take a bunch of photos, they go in, they have props, they go into the stadium, they have some school for rent cars and rent animals and all this other crazy stuff to make these photos great. What was happening is that when you were allowed to do it for unofficial visits, these photos shoots were taking up the entire visit. And you would have a recruit bring a bunch of his buddies who happen to be on the football team and they all wanted to be a part of the photo shoot. And then you had little brothers and mothers and all this sort of

5:12stuff. It was just getting out of hand and it took a lot of resources. There wasn't a whole lot of benefit. But I mean, if you just said, hey, I'm not going to do photo shoots anymore, it was going to hurt you with recruiting wise belief her not if everybody else still was. So you needed a rule to say, hey, we're not going to do photo shoots, you know, unless there are an official visits, but I think is, which I think is reasonable because an official visit, you least have the full weekend with a kid. You can say two, three hours, we're doing this photo shoot then, let's have fun with it. And then the rest of the time, you can get down to the business that the official visit is actually meant for as far as going over academics and NIL and all this other stuff, touring the facilities and everything like that. So I think we've had a couple of, you know, before that rule was passed or when that rule was in the process of being passed, we had a couple of different staffers who came on as guests. We don't get those guests anymore. But they all were saying, you they spoke glowingly about this rule. And I could tell you everybody that I ever spoke to, not just at North

6:18Carolina, but other staffs everywhere loved this rule, felt like it was so necessary. And so, yeah, so this was a very universally loved rule. Obviously, it's, you know, what North Carolina did wasn't like a true like photo shoot, but you kind of have to have some sort of guidelines there to define it with any, I mean, you, you, you have legal background, you understand, you need to have those black and white rules because in college football, these, these, hey, coaches or these staffs are great at fighting loopholes. So you need to have the black and white rules. And one of those black and white rules is you can't have somebody who is on staff, whether it's a student or is actually a paid staffer taking these photos. And that's what happened with North Carolina in, with this violation is that they had a staffer who was taking photos where Bill Balecheck was

7:19posing with recruits. And that's kind of the one of the violations that we're aware of that led to North Carolina not being allowed to, or serving serving the penalty this week and not being allowed to host recruits for, for a game. Yeah, man, it's almost like, why do we need a rule that pro players can't play in college again? Yeah. Yeah. And it needs to be one now because if there's not somebody who push it, anyway, talking about Don Callahan, I see daily, I almost said new dish, not a new dish, I see daily. So you're getting Don into morning, I am sorry in advance if you weren't expecting Don Callahan with your breakfast. But we're talking about recruiting Carolina, can't have visitors for East Tennessee State Don when we did a new dish, we talked about number one games where you'd want to have recruits to attend. You had Notre Dame and Miami down at the bottom of the list. This would be a game that North Carolina could certainly have some success on

8:22the field of bright and positive weekend and all. But I'm going to ask you and since you talk a lot longer than I ever expected you to on this, it might be the last question. How important is it though in the grand scheme of things to miss one of six weekends granted is East Tennessee State granted the list was not long or wouldn't have been long anyway. They've had that issue in the past with Richmond maybe last year. It's not a huge list, but it's still one of six. How important or how detrimental or however you want to frame it is it for North Carolina to not be able to do that this weekend and can they just make it up on the back end somewhere else on one of the other five home games. So in fairness to me, you told me to talk as long as possible. So I was like, I'm going to use this opportunity. I did when you still shot you still shot me you used to you still shot me. I mean, I was amazed and hey, look, I love it because the more you talk less, I do which I talk too much anyway. Gotcha. So, so yeah, so I think in the grand scheme of things, it's not very

9:27detrimental because for the most part, most of these recruits, whoever was planning on visiting this for this home opener, they could visit for another game. And there is like Derrick Johnson, who was probably the main recruit who was supposed to visit for the home opener. He has already filled up the rest of his weekends for the for the fall. So he unless something changes and something very likely can change and he's he just lives in Raleigh. He's a four star defensive end from Broughton High School and Raleigh. He could easily just decide to go to Chapel Hill instead of somewhere else further away one weekend. But yeah, I don't think it's like a huge deal at least from that standpoint because it's not going to be, you know, great atmosphere because you're you're planning against an FCS opponent who I think Bill Connelly has North Carolina 99% chance of winning. So you would much rather have from from an atmosphere standpoint, you would much rather have

10:29recruits at the Notre Dame game or the Miami game. So from that point, it doesn't matter. Optics-wise, it's not great, you know, especially with all the other stuff that's going on and some of the stuff from last season. So that's probably where Hurst North Carolina the most, but I don't think it's anything. I don't I don't think that there's something that we will notice that it caused an impact, a negative impact on North Carolina recruiting. As you mentioned, you know, the next home game against Notre Dame, you can easily bring those guys in for that for that for that weekend. Last question for you, for we get out of here and let people go about their Fridays and get it ready for the weekend, they don't have a general manager, at least not one in name and in title. Michael Lombardi resigned. That debate is for elsewhere. My question to you is how big of a deal is,

11:29that we talked about it when it was a dead period and when he was suspended and all that stuff and it wasn't. Well, now the season started and I know they push off the and split up the duties, but how how big a deal is it not to have one person, one general manager to do all the things that are necessary? I think it's a bigger deal than what people realize. And I think it's one of those things where it might be hard to kind of quantify, but there is a reason why this role has started to kind of take over college football to where you're having the person who's in this role become so incredibly visible and so well known and be making a lot of money. Now I know we talk all the time about Michael Lombardi being the highest paid, 1.5 million, but there are a lot of other ones, maybe not making that much, but are making a lot of money about as much as some coordinators are making.

12:30So if we're, I mean, why would some of these schools, and we're not talking about just any ordinary schools, we're talking about Ohio State pays their GM a lot of money. Georgia, you know, all these other programs pay their general manager a whole lot of money, you know, a law or some of them from the NFL to fill that position. So it's an important role. Now, can North Carolina get by for a little bit without it? Sure. But I think that the further the deeper we get into the season, more, the closer we get to the transfer portal window, really the end of the season, I think, is when it's going to be more harmful for North Carolina because you do need to have that one voice, that one philosophy. I'm a big believer in like team and everybody kind of working together, but you you still need that one person who's kind of making the final say, and that's typically what the general manager does. Yes, Bellaget can kind of fill in that role, but you know, there's a reason

13:32why he hired Michael Lombardi. He wanted those two roles separate. He realized that there was a benefit in having those two roles separate. So I think it is going to, it's not great. And the sooner North Carolina can get a general manager the better, but and this is probably a better conversation for Greg. It seems like at least from what Bellaget has said thus far, it seems like this is something that might not be addressed until, you know, maybe I guess maybe even after the season. That is Don Callahan talking about recruiting on a home weekend, Carolina ETSU East Tennessee State University Saturday tomorrow at 12 noon. There will be no recruits in attendance, at least not officially, you know, but Don Callahan's not coming either or you're going to be there, you're going to come to the tailgate in the Bose lot or you're not going to go see Shaq Diesel. Come on man, so many opportunities to rip and roar. There's some good college football games on Saturday.
