Jackson Rose in the middle. I'm a 35 on your roster, left handed pitcher out of Georgia. Jackson, appreciate you taking time. I mean, I know it's not like college students have anything other than do, other else to do. But I wanted to start easy questions to start. What'd you do this summer? What does the summer look like for a college baseball player?

1:01So this summer I was thankful to go home, which was good. See my family. Being six hours away, I'd snout like a trip down the road. Like even in the fall I really don't go, I'd only go home for Thanksgiving Christmas and saw them and oh my, I was good but I got to go home, hang out with my family, see my niece, my oldest brother, Scott a little niece, there for first birthday party, which was cool to experience. So no longer the baby of the family either, which is nice. But I mean, other than that just lifting started a throwing program towards the end of the summer. But I just enjoy my time home. It was nice to be around my family, but glad to be back. Yeah, that's a lot thing people don't realize, especially guys that come from outside of the state in North Carolina, is like we take it for granted, I live in Clayton. So I'm able to go home whenever I wanted to when I was in school, but you guys have to do it. When you look at the summer, did you have time to sort of sit back and think about, wow, that was a hell of a ride. We just went on. I had a lot of time

2:06to think about that and I had to was looking at all our players getting drafted too and it was just great to see all the success that came from such a great season that we had. And then looking at all the new guys we're bringing in, it's like the success we have also helps us get the best of the best. And it's just good. And we hope to just keep carrying it and carrying it so we can keep getting the best guys and knock down that door to a championship. And as you guys, I mean, obviously you had 26 us in your own night as a freshman last year, but coming up open for the majority of it, but also making a handful of starts as you move into your sophomore year, I guess we're some of the lessons you were in last year and how are you bringing it into this year as a sophomore? I mean, some lessons. It's like knowing that not letting a moment get too big, like even on the biggest stage, you was still baseball at the end of the day and you're being around guys that you're here since August all the way till June. It's like just being a part of the team's the one of the things that I want to focus on the most. And then just knowing like

3:12any opportunity is a good opportunity here. And knowing that I will do whatever it takes for to put our team in a position to win, whether it's starting, come out of the pen, or whatever it takes, what I look forward to. And one thing we hear about all the time is just such, you know, the strong culture this program has and the leadership from, you know, not just the coaching staff, but also in the clubhouse, the older players last year, you guys like, I mean, even Carter or I mean, Gavin's back obviously, but I mean, DeKarro and Lynch, I guess what do you, I mean, I know it's only, was it September today? Yes, September. As you guys get into fallball and you guys start practicing, what do you guys, I guess, trying to impart on the new guys as some of the fresh faces around here? Just knowing that we don't take days off. And one of the big things is even if we have an off day, to be great, some of those days you do have to come in and get your work in and there'll be days where the coaches will tell us like, hey, you don't need to come in today,

4:13like put the bat down, put the glove down. But I mean, to be great, I feel like those are the days that count the most is when the coaches aren't here and it's up to us to get better. Your friend, Georgia, high school coach has Carolina ties for sure, but sort of walk us through the recruiting process of getting you to North Carolina. So I mean, so like I had surgery my sophomore year had internal bracing and got a job after that, didn't think I was playing college baseball. And then my dad always thought I was of course, but and then after that, like I started throwing and didn't have great outings and being able to throw from my summer ball team, my junior summer, which was great. That's when I started to get these looks and I never had a dream school, but I knew I wanted to get away from home. Obviously, like I just wanted to get away from all the people I knew, wanted to meet new people, be around different guys. And when I got here, I think

5:16this was the only visit I took. And I showed up, it was great, met all the coaches, went around the facilities and like just being around the coaches for a day kind of showed me like what type of people they are and what how they're going to impact my life. And I pretty much committed that next week didn't go anywhere else, didn't think about going anywhere else. And it was the best decision I've ever made easily. When you're and I ask Eric this a couple of weeks ago, like at what point do you said you got a job because you didn't think you'd play college baseball at what point did you realize I can play college baseball or I've got an opportunity to play college baseball. When, like probably that summer is when I realized like I had the opportunity and then like when I got here in the fall, I mean we had summer school, but like we weren't practicing or scrimmaging. And then when I got here in the fall and started competing, I was like I have a chance to like

6:16not only be a part of this team, but to help this team win. And it was a good feeling. It's moving back onto the field, another on field question I guess. How much confidence did kind of your postseason run give you going into obviously the final game of the season, but also just across the postseason in general? I mean it was great like being able to close it out against ECU in the regionals, like the coaches let me rock for four innings and it was just super cool experience, I had family here, they got to watch me throw and then just all the guys being proud of me when they shake hands at the end, coach Gaines giving me a hug, like those are the moments that I live for. And I mean I couldn't ask for anything more. I think a lot of times you know you hear about I guess people come to the college level and they realize like oh like this isn't high school anymore, like I'm playing against you know everybody is somebody now like at the D1 like ACC power 4 level I guess did you have like a like a a wow like this isn't high school moment or like welcome to college

7:19baseball? I mean I wouldn't even say happened in the spring, happened in the fall like Cooper Nicholson hit a ball like off the batter's eye. I went to back up home because it was there's bases loaded and it hit the batter's eye before even turned around and then like Ram Kellis like he was hitting ball, he hit a few he hit a few balls off me that like went over the scoreboard and that those sucked but it was also like a learning moment like wow like I need to step it up I need to get better every day or that's what's going to happen comes springtime. It's from talking to you guys over the course of last season it seemed like Cooper provided a lot of those welcome to college moments. I think he might have gotten globe as well but yet when you get in that environment and you've got a guy like Kaden I feel like so covering y'all we were around you most every game or definitely every game and all but I feel like globe got a lot of the attention and you kind of flew under the radar a little bit. We'll talk

8:21about the last game in the season shortly but having a guy like that as a buddy like we talked to you on the field in Omaha, y'all are rumies, both freshmen pitchers both haven't success. What's it like to have somebody in the same journey as you are? I mean it's great like we play catch every day like I'm watching him go out there as a freshman opening weekend he does well against Indiana and then we can after weekend he just keeps reforming and it's like okay like if he can do it I'm with him every day I'm around him every day I'm here too like it gives me that confidence and then like he's also a great locker room guy like he's going to go get done pitching and he's not going to talk about how great he did he's just going to be like wow that's a good game we won and then we're going to go hang out after go eat dinner it's not like he's going to talk about himself and that's one of the things that makes him who he is and why he's here. Yeah who's got

9:21the best slider between me and him I mean he I would still have to say him like he spends it better but I think I have the better change of though I think I have the better change of but he can he can spend it really well. There you go Jackson Rose of course part of the dynamic freshman duo Jackson we're in the Hall of Honor here and if you look around you see pictures Harvey Miller you know Zach Gallon you've got all these people that came before you and you've done some work and I see they've updated the board down there would ride the engine to Carro and Shaft and Hull that is new that was not here last time we'll have to post a picture of that for folks to see but when you see all of this history and I assume you saw it when you came on your recruiting visit but to actually get in there and be a part of it get to Omaha and be a major part of it just as a 17 18 19 20 year old young man that tell us those that have new opportunity to feel that way it's a bit like I mean it

10:26was crazy like we had guys that like Fulcher Boise and Boston and all that class like they came here their freshman year and they were they went to Omaha their freshman year they're like it's the best thing you could be a part of and then they told us how bad it sucked when they didn't make it the next year and like looking at everybody like we had guys crying after the super regional just so happy and like seeing that was almost better than being there but being there was like looking around you got kids wanting to sign baseballs like some of them don't even know my name but they still want to get the baseball sign like it's just that whole experience and then like walking out of the hotels we had all our fans there like the amount of fans we had to go to Omaha it's in Nebraska and we're all the way over here it was just like I can't really describe it like it's all a lot of emotions and knowing that we got that opportunity knowing that we could have the same opportunity

11:34to go back like there's nothing else that you could strive for. What was your favorite thing that you did in Omaha that's a fun one that we've been asking all the guys because you know you're there you know therefore at 15 16 days it's a lot of times and a lot of days off I guess what was the favorite thing or best experience you had over there? I mean probably one of my best experiences was like I mean I was taking a net pro this isn't one I remember the most I was taking a nap I was just chilling it was like one of the first days there like I'm not a big walking outside guy but Maddie Metsayezka our captain came into my room and woke me up got me out of bed we went to go get some food we got some good food went to go get ice cream like that was like one of my favorite moments is just being around guys that I may never be around for the next 5 10 20 years even like it's those memories are the ones I remember rather than what pitch I threw to this hitter when did I go in the game like those that's what I think about I think it's an excursional segue

12:38into where I think Tommy wants to take it but I mean just going and being in Omaha is one thing but taking the field of the Intra or Swabick was it everything that you know you had imagined or dreamed of? I mean yes like being walking out there looking at all the fans walking back into the dugout walking back on the field like I mean it was just some of the craziest moments of my life and I'll never forget it and it feels like yesterday it happened and that's what keeps me going is like knowing that I could continue to go back and we could continue to go back and for everyone who hasn't been like I could and other guys that have been could be a part of helping them like experience Omaha were you nervous? I mean obviously I was super nervous but I mean we talk about like being nervous is like there is that feeling you have but when you're prepared there's nothing to be afraid of and

13:40knowing that coach gains and coach how got us all prepared to pitch in Omaha I was never afraid of anything I want to ask about the specifics about that but I got to step back and listening to you I mean how are you 19 19 you're older soul than that listening to you talking to you where do you get it from is it come from your parents they come from your you know older relatives I mean it's one thing to be a good athlete and have success it's another to have the gratitude that you've shown us here in the first 10 15 minutes and I'm just curious as to how you raised obviously raised well yes I mean my mom I I would older my mom who I am but I mean also owe it to the guys here like watching their interviews watching how they do things it shows me of what of how I want to be because when I look at it I'm like yeah like that's that's a man with

14:46humility that's a confident man who has kindness and compassion and that's what all the coaches want to instill into us and that's what I see and they're not going to teach us something that they don't do and that's another thing I love being here is like being around Gavin folder Boston Owen Johnson like all those guys all show me how to become a better man and team it man that's deep it is the Carolina baseball culture you hear so much about Jackson Rose sitting here talking about now let me ask you about on the field at Omaha and let's work from the last game forward you played in the last college game of the season you played in the national championship game and you started the national championship game we got to know like walk us through the process I asked you earlier off air you can share as much or as little as you want but I'm interested to know how all that goes down how does a freshman end up being the guy on Monday night I mean I was just

15:53thankful for the opportunity and like those postseason moments where I got to prove that I could pitch in a high pressure situation like that helped me a lot and then knowing the guys I had behind me like and then but going in the day before like we win a game two and everybody's like well who's gonna pitch and in my mind I thought it was gonna be Boaz but Coach Forbes talked to me and was like we have confidence in you just give us everything you got like you always have and knowing that they were giving me the ball gave me more confidence and I've had my entire life and then just going out there I mean I walk out on the field some dude with the big cameras what like following me there's kids all lined up I tried to sign as many as I could but and then I had some Oklahoma fans talking trash while I'm stretching but I mean the whole thing was surreal like

16:56it felt like one moment I was stretching and then the next I was in the game and just going out there wearing Carolina blue playing for the coaches playing for my team it was it was just the best experience in my life let me drop one more what's the anything you can share that Oklahoma fans were saying I mean this is a friendly I mean I'm not sure but I'm pretty I'm pretty sure nothing crazy but I'm pretty sure they tried to spit on me while I was more stretching but it landed like a few feet behind me like I heard it I heard them spit but I didn't see it so it could not have been at me but it was nothing they didn't say anything too crazy and I was trying not to listen like I was I had to I had bigger things to worry about than the fans I guess this is a

17:57question from the top and we're talking about I guess pregame nerves and we were we were in a struggle to ask this question do you have a pregame ritual do you have anything specific you do every I know athletes are very specific and hyper focused you have anything like particular you do I mean a lot of baseball players are superstitious like some pitchers you can't talk to them you can't do this but I mean honestly there's I'd never really had any type of superstition like I would show I really don't I really don't like we I would show I mean I showed them to the field that day did what I always I mean I guess I'd drink a watermelon red bull that's probably the most superstitious thing is anytime we play I drink a red bull a watermelon red yes I don't like the regular one I like the watermelon one and other than that like I don't put all my shoes a different way or none of that but I mean I do have the same like walk to the mound every time

18:57I go to the mound but other than that nothing before the game you like starting more coming out of the bullpen I think we talked about this earlier in the year but has it changed I mean it really like it doesn't matter to me like if the coaches are like this is how we're going to win today if you come out of the pin or if you start like I'll listen to him and I'll believe in him like that's they're not going to tell me something that's going to hurt me or hurt the team and I trust them and it comes down to the team at the end of the day like I it doesn't matter if I start or if I even pitch that day if we win I go into the locker room I shower and we got a dove and that's all that really matters when you when you walk off the field how do you decompress like what is the routine to decompress you know both here and when you get home and what do you like to do to get away from it um after the game he talks about winter lose we play the next day you get in the shower you play good you played bad it it's it's all gone yesterday's gone and then we have today

20:04so I get home I'll either hang out with my roommates or I'll be with my girlfriend for a few hours but other than that like I just I try to not think about the game too much because if there's I'm not someone that's going to go back rewatch the game analyze what I did wrong it's like I'm just going to try and repeat if I did well I'm going to I'm just going to think the same way I did the day before if I did bad it's like oh well that's baseball we play tomorrow so when you look at how well or or how bad you did quote unquote bad you did what do you look at the most is it you know the basics like runs given up hits given up how do you judge because sometimes you make a great pitch and a guy just makes play oh yeah yeah and or you know somebody in the field um dives and makes a catch on a rope that a dude hit off I mean how do you judge

21:04whether or not you played well and how did the coaches sort of affect that approach to the game I mean I think about it from like a competitive aspect it's like if I go out there and I'm filling up the strike zone and they're just they're hitting me and hitting me then I know I did everything I could to try and get them out like I attacked the zone I wasn't afraid but if I go out there and it's I'm making non-competitive pitches I'm not filling up the zone I'm walking guys that's more of a sign that I'm not doing my job well enough because all I ask is you got there you compete as hard as you can and then if it's not your day then it's not your day but you give 100% and you compete most of the time it'll work out for you and when it doesn't you just have to tip your cap go back to the shower wash it off and then play the next day we talked to we've talked to coach games before a handful of times on the show what's it I guess what's it like

22:05like playing under him and I guess his coaching style and how he kind of helps you get ready to go out and pitch I mean he's one of the reasons I came here talking him on the phone like just he wants us to be the best versions of ourselves as we can be like he's not going to make you come in and change your arms lot change how you throw change how you hold this change like if you if you want him to do that he can help you but like he's really good at making the best version yourself like when I like when I go look back in high school like I don't look that much different it's just he's gotten us that much stronger that much sharper and just tuned everything to where we're becoming the best version of ourself when he comes out to the mound we we've talked to coach gangans and he's great he's a great interview and great and he has fun with it um sometimes it looks like he's not happy and sometimes he's he doesn't think he walks out there any

23:08different as a pitcher stay in there tell me about those mound visits because I'm I'm always wondering like and I can't say what I normally say but it is it's fired up gains or is this settle down we got this gains it seems like there's two different styles is it or two different ways he approaches it is it and what's it like when you see him coming I mean when I see him coming it's like okay it's not coach Forbes I'm still in the game so that's a good that's a good sign and every experience I've had he'll come up he'll tell me to settle down like everything's going to be good and then he's like just attack this guy with everything you got and it's a little fire me up speech towards the end and that's what I love like he comes in calm settles you down and then he's like just compete with this next guy all you need is get this guy out and then he'll watch you and you you get that job done then you got the next guy and then you may go back that next inning and it's like the confidence he has in the pitchers he coaches is more than I've experienced any other players I can imagine

24:17is there ever been a time where he comes out there and he's like man what are we doing like come on man I mean are there talks like that or is he purely like you said just purely motivational positivity I mean I'm sure there's been other guys who have that conversation with but to me it's just purely telling me to settle down and and then he'll go to that motivational but I mean I know a few stories that it's a little different for some other guys but that's that's their stories and then with with coach Forbes absolutely being a former pitching coach how hands on is he with you guys or does he come to just stay out of the way and let coach gains do his thing I mean he is that's what he's great at is letting coach gains really teach us everything but he steps in and lets us know that pitching he wants to pitching to be the backbone of Carolina baseball and hearing that he has a lot of confidence in us and he I mean he says we you can't win games if you don't pitch

25:17and you don't defend and he'll talk about a starter going out there giving up three in the first and then going to go seven innings and that just shows the confidence he has in the pictures here that he struggles on the first inning other coaches may pull him right in and there but not not our head coach I think I'm ready to move into the fun ones or if you have more well I mean we I can talk all day obviously all right fun with fastball strikeout sliders strikeout I mean I don't throw too hard so like a good slider strikeout to me is great but even though I don't throw hard I would still rather strike some dude out on a heater because that means I beat him so looking or swinging miss strikeout definitely a swing and miss strikeout because then you you beat him rather than him beating himself backwards K if you were able to be a two-way player what would you

26:21where would you play and also what type of bat would you care not type of bat what type of bat bat and average power all that stuff I mean my high school coach never really gave me a shot like he'd let me hit spatially but I always hit in summer ball and I was better with wood bat but I played first base a lot and never really played outfield not the fastest guy but I played first base that was pretty good but I think definitely couldn't hit an ACC but if I were to I would be honest it would probably be like facing especially watching our scrimmage yesterday watching some of these pictures I don't know if I'd get a hit but if I did it'd be a home run okay I can promise that who would you most like to hit that home run off on this pitch instead oh okay I think I think I would like to hit a home run off of definitely K then definitely glove without a doubt that would be some battle yes that that would that would be the funniest thing I would experience

27:27would be hitting a home run off him yeah I know you guys did the the pitcher home run derby I think it wasn't in Charlotte was it for the AC tournament did you hit one oh yeah I hit one I had one out pole side got got some air under it I was swinging for the fence is a little bit I only got one out but if they gave us another shot I think I think I got the swing down now and then going off of Tommy's question if there's the pitcher you would least like to face on this roster it would definitely be a lefty because lefty lefty always scared me so I would I would have to say probably folder bow-ass would be the toughest scary for sure Paulson said you and said the way you hide the ball when you developed your and I'm getting back in technical side but when you developed your of approach on the mound you wind up and all that stuff how how important was it to hide the baseball from these guys out here I mean that's like one thing is we coach games told us when we got here is freshmen it's like these guys will be able to pick up the ball if you have any tell

28:28so I tried to stay as still as possible and like I'd try and grip it the last second but I think I guess like when I throw it I just keep it behind my body which is something I don't even think about but it's just try not to give away any tips that they know it's coming and then trying to keep the hitters off balance and that's what coach gains he'll study hours for that knowing what the hitter may be looking for and even though they may be looking for something he always pitches to our strength the technology side of it obviously that is not technology that is your skill or whatever how important is the technology side of the advantages you'll have here at Carolina I mean the technology's great like some guys are really into it and they want to know it and but a guy like me I'm not too concerned about it but like the if the coaches coach gains and coach how look at something and they're like okay these numbers are wrong like that's when I'll

29:31be like okay like how do I fix that and then I'll throw it and they're like yeah those numbers look good then I'll be like yeah I'm good I'm never going and look at what everything's doing because if I'm striking dudes out but my numbers aren't the best then really doesn't matter to me like I'm getting dudes out I'm getting the job done and if there's a guy who's spent in the ball like 3 300 but he's giving up on runs it's like I'd rather take the take my side of it I guess so you're you're an awful guy you're just you're just a baseball player you're not a math guy yeah I think I'd be the same way have you I guess did they have you in the trajectory downstairs did they have the pitching staff did they have you guys no no they can't do that because we face them all fall that coach gains it's not a wow that that would be a little cheating on their part who's the toughest guy to face or I'll give you a handful so you don't start a little one guy out who on this roster this year and you can go last year if you want but sort of highlight who's

30:32the toughest to deal with I mean I haven't thrown in this I don't throw to the skirmish till next week but I would say Gavin I always had a hard time with Gavin like he was just really he has a really good eye would spit on a lot of good pitches and if I was lucky to beat him I beat him that day but I'm excited to throw to him this fall I feel like I've gotten better and then another guy like trying to think jayden nunez was always a little tough to because he could always hit the heater and guys I can truly hit the heater make you have to land the off speed and like last fall I couldn't I wasn't as good at landing the off speed as I was when I got into the spring so he took advantage of it the toughest guy you faced I guess during the season that show again the ACC you're not conference whoever it may be man that's tough I really don't remember names but ACC I mean Drew Burris was tough I think he was two for two off me with like two 115

31:38mile per hour barrels no home runs though which was good for me but he was definitely I mean that lineup was tough to face in general but hem specifically he was a little tough because he was a shorter guy so the zone's shrinking and he can hit the ball anywhere he wanted on the field too so but it was tough facing him he's pretty good yeah he's not bad baseball player that Georgia Tech team was stacked yes you guys shut them down here that was one of the more impressive performances that I've seen in college baseball all year was that performance here talk about that weekend I mean I'm a Georgia boy and Georgia Tech coming here I wanted to beat him maybe more than anybody but we knew that we that their strength was hitting and to us pitchers we felt like our strength was we were gonna be able to pitch and coach Gaines is like we will outpitch them if you know you can and watching the caro and lynch go out there and just compete and leave it all out there like

32:45I mean that explains how they ended up where they are now like shows the type of guys they are shows what coach Gaines teaches us Dan and Dan out I guess because I've got some silly ones okay yeah all right what's the number one question we always ask what's go to you you can spot on Frank history like if you're going to Frank on straight where you going to eat man that's tough oh I do not say you're getting a burger from sub dogs I'm not a sub dog Paulson loves some of him sub dogs but I I'm I really do I'm an eight-payer since summer school so I I like Carolina brewery like I like going there with my family during the weekend it's a good spot my dad likes beer so he gets a beer but I like I mean they got good burgers good wings I like going I would probably say Carolina breweries my favorite beers good they got one

33:46my go there after this um what video games yes didn't you carry your PlayStation over oh yes I did have my PlayStation that's why I mean that's why Maddie wanted me also get out of the room because I was playing video games so what's the what are we playing I mean the team me and the team we play a lot of 2k but I also play like a lot of solo games like Spider-Man Spider-Man 2 um and then there's all my is that the Varellis game yes and then there's like some other nerdy games I play like Assassin's Creed wait a minute now Assassin's Creed Black Frag so good black flag yes well I watched the Odyssey when it came out and they got Assassin's Creed Odyssey and I played that one I played Nerd Alert but I played that one after I watched that movie and I like playing I'm pretty deep into that I'm pretty deep into origins origins is each yes that one's a good one too yeah and then I played Black Frag Black flag because I like

34:50pirates but yeah disregard that part so how was the Odyssey was as good as people say it is because I have not seen it I mean I went to go watch it with my sister I mean her go watch movies she loves movies and we thought it was great like it was definitely one of the best movies I've seen this year it's hard for me to put it in like a top 10 I've seen so many great movies but I mean this is a really good movie I like the story I like how they did with it I took a Greek mythology class here that could have helped me if I read some more of those books but I I didn't read as many books as I should have still did well in the class though but I knew a little bit going into watch with a movie that is a story of people that have graduated like oh I was supposed to read this book in college it's actually pretty good all right you said movies top five movies see that's tough like it's not it's like gladiator dark night go from there which one are you watching on

39:09like weird demise but definitely different was Lee Sowers was one of the most different people and I love him like I texted him a month ago asking how he's doing but he was unlike anybody I've ever met for sure who's the hot dog so that was last year or two years ago that was so um who's a guy do you fish and hunt and oh did did Maddie get you out of there never went fishing before never fish never fish never caught a fish I went hunting one time as a kid but I was like super young I didn't even have a gun so it wouldn't count it as we got five more minutes five minutes oh gosh okay so with all the new arms in the bullpen this year you guys run in a ton of new yeah we're gonna go back we're gonna go back to the stuff I guess but what was really new arms that I actually that you've seen so far throughout the fall early on here it's kind of like wow like this kicking pitch I mean watching yesterday I would say Voorhees he's a legit dude honestly

40:11everyone that threw we got to see Sean Hurley throw which was great like watching him pitch he's he worked super hard coming back from injury he he's gonna be really good and watching him like it's fun to watch that process I mean I I dealt with the same thing coming back obviously I was a little younger this is a bigger stage and I think he handled it well um Scott Duran another good guy great curveball pressing crowd like everyone that threw I mean we had two Walter Stake guys throw a Ryan Smith and Major Oswald they were both super exciting to watch just being out here seeing what our pitching staff is gonna be able to do this here it's gonna be unreal did the bats have any success oh the batside some success the fall the hitters get to us every a decent amount in the fall freshman Casey hit a bomb first time around in the fall was a bomb for Casey and it was that was
