Matt's I'm Rose Ryan Fickles nine on today's show. We got a blowout loss to discuss. We'll break down the game in the first segment, but also talk about how well Rafael Devers is playing and if he's a bat the met should be targeting this off season. In the second segment, we'll talk about how Drake come together. And then the final segment. I want to talk a little bit about Marcus Simeon. What do the meds do with Simeon? He continues to struggle. How do they get out from under this situation they put themselves in? As that Thornton had his first rough start really since his debut and the big problem in this act for Thornton was he got burned by the home run ball. Rafael Devers got him twice. Christian Coss got him twice. Devers first home. He went in the first inning of solo shot. The meds had a very brief lead in the bottom of the second inning when AJ you in hit a home run, a two run shot to give the meds a two to one lead. But in the third inning Christian Coss hit a two run homer. He would then get Thornton again in the fifth inning for a solo shot. And then Rafael Devers would hit a two run homer in that fifth inning as well. To put the giants up six or two and they would pretty much cruise from there. Now Thornton would finish five, but he gave up six runs on seven hits, walked one and of course the four home runs. The R.A. jumped from 2.93, the 3.53. And if you've been listening to this show this season and you've heard me talking about Zach Thornton,

3:05this is what I've been trying to warn everybody of. At some point in time a clunker was going to come up because when you live in the zone as much as Zach Thornton does and that's that's a superpower. That's what you wanted to do. You don't want him to get away from what has gotten him to this point. But if you live in the zone that much, there's going to be a couple starts here and there where the location is going to allude you a little bit. You're going to leave some pitches over the heart of the plate and you're going to get hit really hard. It's just going to happen. And so this was expected for at some point Thornton to have a bad one. And honestly, it's the type of test that you want to see a young pitcher get challenged with in the rookie season. Because now it's up to him to go back to the drawing board, have adjusted game plan or whatever he needs to do to be ready for his next start. And it's probably going to come. It is going to come in Yankee Stadium next weekend. That's not going to be an easy environment. That's not going to be easy lineup for him to navigate. And can he bounce back under those circumstances

4:09and deliver a good start for you? It's going to be really interesting to see. So I think again, this does not change my opinion of Zach Thornton. This is what I had been expecting to happen. Because I just didn't think he was going to finish the season with an ERA under three. And I don't want Matt's fans, which is what I keep saying, to expect Zach Thornton to be a front line starter. If Zach Thornton is your number four starter for the next six years, that is a remarkable win for this franchise. It really is. Not everyone's going to be a one or a two. You need back end starters that can compete, that can give you innings. And Thornton can absolutely do that. This was just a bad start for him. And we might see another one down the stretch. But my hope is that Thornton can, especially in this next outing, bounce back and kind of stop the bleeding for himself and can maintain that confidence to finish out this season strong. Now offensively, pretty rough game for the Matt's. AJ Ewing was solid. He went one for two with a couple of walks.

5:10Jared Young went two for four. He scored two runs, Brett Beatty drove in three. He drew a base as well to walk. And he also had an RBI double in the ninth. But he went through the rest of the line. And Francisco Alvarez was 0-4-3 strikeout. And the top four in the Matt's lineup puts 0-17, Lendor's Soto, Besht and Benj, all hell of hit list, Jeffrey Young, Guilbert Cappell Ruches, and Hagen Migno-Baron. So just not a great game for the Matt's. They will look to win this series on Sunday with Christian Scott. And the Matt, which we're talking about a little bit in the final segment. But get into the story of the show. Rafael Debra is having a monster series. He's home at three times. He's driven in eight runs across the first two games. Over his last seven games, play, he's got six home runs. He's got nine home runs, so it over his last 15. You go to the 47 games since the all-star break in the second half here. He's hitting 276, 377 on base. A 603 slug for Rafael Debra, which is good for a 980 OPS. He's got 16 home runs in 47 games. He started off this season with a brutal month of April.

6:12We had a 515 OPS and only hit two home runs. But since May 1st, he's been one of the very best hitters in baseball. This is excluding his game on Saturday because fan grabs has not updated with that game just yet when I sort by date. But if you go from May 1st, all the way up until I guess, September 4th, 111 games played for Rafael Debra's, batting 271, getting on base at a 362 clip, slugging at a 572 clip. He's got a 154WRC plus, which is third best in Mates with Baseball behind the two MVP's, list the MVP front runners right now, Pete Koromstrong and you were down Alvarez. And since May 1st, including these two home runs that he's hit, second most in Baseball behind only Pete Koromstrong, 33 home runs since May 1st. This is one of the best hitters in baseball. No doubt about it. And you go back to the 2019 season. Just look at who have been the top hitters in the game. Rafael Debra is on a pretty short list here. He is 12 best in terms of war.

7:13So when's the above replacement of Koromstrong? 12 best player base, well since 2019. By the way, Juan Soto's number two in Francisco and Dora's number three on that list behind Aaron Judge at number one. Now his slug percentage is 9th, 515 slug since 2019. Ranked just ahead of Pete Alonzo by a single point. WRC plus 17th at 132. But you have 12 hitters who are sitting between a 131 and a 135 WRC plus. His 237 home runs since 2019. Ranked eighth best in Major League Baseball. The other thing to note, this is a guy that plays. You look at games played. He has the fifth most games played since 2019. You know as the most games played since 2019, Pete Alonzo, 1150 Mad Olsen, the Iron Man with the longest active consecutive game streak is second, 1132, Freddie Freeman, 1127, Marcus Simeon, 107 and then Devers. And all these stats again are not factoring in

8:16the game on September 5th, but regardless. Add a game to all those toads for all those guys. And again, Devers over 1100 games, 1106 games. You also have Machado, Vlad Amerigarero Jr. That are part of that group. And Ayo Hanyo Suarez, not far behind. So he's an Iron Man. He's one of the best left-handed hitters in baseball. And he's only 29 years old going into his age 30 season. Now why would the Giants trade him? Earlier this year, there was a report that they were open and moving any and all of their big salaries. Now the way Devers has played, I would think at this point, he is still, or you would think at this stage. He's the guy you want to build around. I don't know how you can look at William Thomas and say, yeah, that's who we're building around. Or Matt Chapman and say, that's who we're building around. But those are the three contracts that are prohibitive on their books. Those are the guys that are signed to these monster deals. And for a franchise that might be looking to go through a little bit of a rebuild, considering what they've done

9:18this season. If that's the direction you want to go, moving off of Rothfeel Devers money and getting prospects back in return, might not be the worst thing. The question is, what would it take for the mess to take on that contract? Because as much as you could say, Rothfeel Devers is an outstanding hitter and he is. Not a great defender at first. And he's owed a lot of money. And those are contracts that don't typically move. So can these two sides actually come to terms on a trade this off season? There is deferred money in that contract as well. It's like seven and a half per season

12:24regardless of the deferred money. You are talking about a guy that is owed a ton of money that's going into his age 30 season, that contract will run up after his age 36 season. If Rafael Devers hit the market off of the season that he just had or that he's having, I don't think that this contract is crazy whatsoever. Still, there's not that many teams who would take on that money. Remember, Rafael Devers was not traded for much. Now, there was some stuff going on at the time where there was clearly a riff between Devers and the Red Sox. And so maybe that suppressed his trade value sum. But it was not a haul that went back the other way to the Red Sox. It was largely salary relief. That was the biggest part of that trade. So now you look at this current situation. Would the giants want to get off of the money?

13:24And how much can that take advantage of that situation? Also, what do you give up prospect-wise to get a deal like this done? I would say, if the meds want to win next season, this is the type of move that you make. Because all of a sudden, if you could run out there a top five in your lineup of Francisco Lendor, Juan Soto, Rafael Devers, Boba Shet, and Carson Benz, one through five, that looks pretty good. But you also had a player that was very similar to this in Peter Lanzo who was not the best defender at first base, just like Rafael Devers, who was a slugger, who you might have thought over time was starting to regress. And you didn't want those years in Peter Lanzo's mid-30s. Well, Peter Lanzo's contract runs up after his age 35 season. And, for Rafael Devers, you're essentially taking on more years,

14:24which is a longer runway for something to go wrong, and a contract that runs a year later than Peter Lanzo's. So you would essentially be saying, all right, we messed up on the Lanzo situation. Having a premium slugger at first base in a big market is really important when you're trying to win in this window with Soto and Lendor. And so we are going to grab a first baseman who is not a good defender, who theoretically could age poorly, although I think guys who swing the bat like this just are going to find a way to produce. The disc contract and the Peter Lanzo contract, it's not the same thing as the Mani Machado contract. And Machado, do his credit, as I think 11 consecutive non-COVID seasons, so you pull the COVID season out, 11 consecutive years, 25 plus omers. That just happened, I believe, on Saturday. That's a remarkable streak, and the guy is still producing. But his contract runs until he's 40. No trade turn, or we're seeing regression over there, and Philly,

15:25his contract runs until he's 41. So some of these deals are really bad. I don't think this Devers contract is really bad. Just look, I think the Peter Lanzo contract with the Orioles. It's a pretty good deal for what you're getting. And so it would be very surprising to see the Mets go after Devers considering the situation with the Lanzo. But if you're feeling that pressure to win, this could be a move you make, but I think part of it has to be getting off of something that you're getting off of contract that is holding you back. And there's two that would make sense. Hooray, Polanco, one year left, $20 million, hurt player, might not even be able to play Nexus, and we still don't know. Or Marcus Simmy, who's owed $46 million over the next two years, 27-28. $26 million in 20-27, $20 million in 20-28. Marcus Simmy is from the Bay Area, not that that would probably matter too much to the Giants, but it's just something to note.

16:26Could you dump Simmy in this deal? Because then I think it becomes interesting. Then you're getting off money that just feels like dead money in your books, which we're going to talk about more in the next segment anyway. You're getting off that deal. You're freeing up second base. So now second base, at that point, all of a sudden, you don't necessarily have to get rid of Ronnie Mauricio. With your current roster and the fact that Mauricio can't get option next year, it's really hard to keep him if you clear it's him. And let's just say the trade is Jared Young, because you don't have any need of first base. You could trade your first base platoon to the Giants, so they can plug and play that. So Jared Young and Mark Vianne, Marcus Simmy and then a prospector too. Now, I think it would have to be a pretty good prospect going the other way. I don't think that this is just, hey, pick 18 and 20 in your farm system. I think if you are getting off of Simmy and in this deal, I think that you're going to have to give up a couple pieces. And at least one piece that probably hurts.

17:27And that's why it's so hard for me to see the match in the Giants lining up in this way. It really is where I just feel like if you're going to trade for off-y old hevers, you probably could come to terms with Taraoki, totally butchering the name, Saito. The Japanese slugger that's coming over, or supposed to be posted this winter, that we have talked about on previous shows. It would make more sense, I think, to spend money there instead of, you know, making a trade for Devers and giving up the prospect on top of you and taking on the contract. But off-y old Devers is proven. That's the difference. Saito, you would think might be a better defender first base in the game, hasn't played there, but it's a more athletic guy who's younger. But you don't know for sure if he's going to translate. And Muno Takamura Kami, he translated. Kazuma Okamoto, he translated. So even if you go back to the last slugger before that,

18:27say it Suzuki, translated. The only guy that hasn't translated lately is Masataka Yoshida, as far as these high-profile sluggers coming over from Japan. So I still think that's a more likely road to go-down. But I do think that there would be absolutely some merit behind the idea of trading for Devers. If you got off-Simmion, freed up a lot of stuff, and then we're able to keep second base open for your prospect. You don't have to be worried about playing a guy that could just be completely washed at this point. And you'd get a guy in Devers that you would know over the next five years he should hit. Now, is he going to defend it first base? Who knows? Does he have to be a DH at some point? Probably. What does that mean for Wanzoto as he ages? That's the give and take, and that's also why you might not assign Peter Lanzo, and that's why I would be pretty doubtful that a Devers trade can come together. But this is where you just wonder how creative over the New York Met is going to get this off season.

19:28And I wouldn't be surprised that this is something that they just kick around, because if you could intrigue the giants with some prospects and just that long-term flexibility, and you could get something done and get off of either Simian or Polanco to clean up your books a little bit, to take on that salary of Devers. I think it's an interesting concept. It's one that deserves to be discussed, especially on a Sunday episode of Act On Mets, when the Mets got blown out. So, Devers is a big part of it. I've seen some people talking about it on social media. I feel like it was worth it to address it. Do I think it's going to happen? Honestly, no. But it is one of the more fun things that could happen this winter, and you never really know what can come together. It would be a big turn in a different direction for how Devers' turn seems to want to build a baseball team. But maybe that's what you have to do to try to win next season. And I'll be curious if the Mets make any type of move like this, that desperation isn't the best word, but it's something along those lines.

20:31An urgent move like this, that would be taking on a lot more risk than maybe the Mets have in recent years. A lot of more long-term risk, and maybe that long-term risk is what you need to propel you moving forward. So, I thought it was fun to talk about, but what I want to go through in the next segment here, is kind of building off the Simeon notion towards a potential trade. It's the guy that, unless you're taking on like $200 million of salary, it's going to be kind of tough to find anybody that takes on Simeon. So, what do you do with them? We're going to go through that next because David Serns did some comments about Marcus Simeon that were interesting. So, go through that, what the Mets can do in just a minute. 22:33I met you at first, listen, or your first watch every day. And thank you for making Lockdown the number one sports podcast network. Now we talked about Marcus and me a little bit on the show I did. I want to say was about a week ago now where I talked about the homegrown youth moving at second base and it was more focused on the prospects. But when we look at Marcus, Simion right now is 36 years old. His OPS has dropped every single season. If this doesn't illustrate a decline, I don't know what would. When he won the World Series with Rangers in 2023 and 826 OPS. The next year it dropped the 699. Last year it dropped the 669 and they sure it's at 628. Now I had a hip injury this season. It's a guy that was an Iron Man that is dealing with injuries for the first time in the last two years. So I don't know how much that hip injury sat them offensively. Not that you could say he used as an excuse, but it was kind of broached when the injury was announced that it was limiting him physically.

23:40And you hope that that can explain his struggles defensively and offensively. David Surns was asked about Marcus and me in prior to this series. And he describes the veteran as a consummate professional who posts every day, works incredibly hard, who is still a really good defender. The defender part, I don't know what he's seeing. Minus 6 outs above average and the 9th percent tile majorly baseless. But it's been one of the worst defenders in baseball this season. Especially at his position. I know it's a two time goal glver. I will say there's been some turns lightly with him in the londore where it does flick those guys are starting to get a bit of a chemistry. But I don't have very high hopes that Marcus Simons going to find a fountain of youth next year. Now George Springer did it. George Springer looked like his career was winding down and he found a little bottle of magic in 2025. He was de-aging though. He was not playing a middle infield position every single day. And I just, I don't think Simeon has that in him.

24:42I really don't. I don't think we're going to see Marcus and me and find something offensively at this stage in his career. And I don't think the elite defenders coming around anytime soon either. So you're in a really tough spot because I don't think the mental just flatly eat the money and cut him. I think if that happens, it would happen next year or the following season. But I think it would have to happen if he was just dreadful to start next season. That you would just get to a point where you just have to just swallow it. Or you get through next season and maybe at that point in time, you can eat down the money and find somebody that takes some of it. Somebody that needs a veteran leader or you're taking on a bad contract. Maybe. But here's the thing like you trade a brand of Nemo and in some respects, I understand why the match made that deal. I do. It was about freeing up the outfield. You saw the vision of a Soto-Uing Bench outfield and you've gotten to that this year. And I will say Brandon Nemo, you can say, oh, he's been a better than Semi.

25:44Absolutely has. His numbers aren't declined to last three seasons. He has not exceeded 800 OPS this season. The power numbers have dropped. He's at 14 home runs. He had 20 home runs at three consecutive seasons with a big month of September. He can get there, but it's not going to get to the 25. He hit last season. And you know, the RBIs have dropped. That's a team thing as much as an individual thing. But you know, this season, Brandon Nemo's got a 750 OPS. Last year was 760, the year before was 726. Could he be a 750 OPS guy for a couple more years? Yeah. I don't think getting off Nemo at the end of the day was the worst thing in the world in terms of the contract. But the contract you had to take on to do it. How much did you gain? You know what I mean? It's a weird one where I don't know if at the end of the day, the match were better off than just telling him what so to is got a DH. You know, and or telling Nemo, he's got a DH when the kids came up.

26:46You know, but I get why they did it. The main thing was get Carson mentioned right field, move so to the left. And that's worked. And if you and your center filter, this app feels going to be good. And you are off the semi-money in two years. And you know what? You got Steve Kohn as your owner. You can just swallow it at some point. And whatever, move on with your life. You got a couple of top prospects right now that could be the answer to second base. A million peach readers first triple at home run on Saturday. He went two for five and 13 games there. He's got a 772 OPS and 277. Getting on base to the 346 clips, plugging it to 426 clips. I think peach could be the second base when the student is opening day. Honestly, I think there's a chance that you might just look at what you have. And he's the type of high floor bat that can figure things out that you might choose. For us, it's an action. Jefferson Rojas is your top overall prospect now. He's got eight home runs and 25 games in AA with the Mets. He's slugging 570. He homeworked again on Saturday, 891 OPS at the level. I think he's probably the Mets third baseman of the future. But Wal-Boh Bichette's there. Jefferson Rojas as a shortstop.

27:47Could fly over to second base as soon as next season. And Mitch Voigt is following a very similar arc to AJ Ewing when he last season. Where he's kind of just burst onto the scene at a nowhere. And really has become one of the Mets top prospects. He's still got a 1.023 OPS and 25 games in AA. So you got three prospects right there who could be up next season at second base. I think you can carry a pretty open competition spring training. And there's be honest with Marcus Simion, like, look, it's your job to lose. But you could lose it. Like, there's his kids coming and something can happen. You don't want to blindside him. And then you can see that he's going to be a little bit more than you want. You can find a good guy and make him think, oh, like, your job's handed to you. If Brett Baby outplays Marcus Simion and spring training next year, I'm sorry. At a certain point, the production is the production. You got to do something about it. At the end of the day, I don't think they're going to cut Marcus Simion. But they're on a tough spot with him. And I think the only saving grace is you might have a second baseman come up.

28:49As soon as opening day or made of next season, where you have a cost controlled answer. So you do have Marcus Simion is an extremely expensive piece on your bench. At least you're at the position. You're not really that much worse for wear. And hopefully the young guys are giving the production that you were hoping to get from Simion. Maybe it's a good defender. Maybe the defensive metrics just for some reason this year, hate Francisco Lendora Marcus Simion. And those two guys next season in their mid 30s can come together and play elite defense of the middle like David Sternson vision and Simion can run a 700 OPS flat and you're throw with it. And it works out the next one next year. I'm not that optimistic that that's going to happen. So we'll just see we'll just see a final game of this series. Christian Scott today going against Caesar, Pardomo, left handed pitcher, who's made one big appearance prior to this on September 1st, give a run in fournings pitch. Hit a 4 4 3 ERA between double A and triple A.

29:49This season prior to his promotion. So the match are going to run a lot of the righties out there. I'm sure Mark Viantos will get a start. We'll see if Soto is going to D H and Viantos is going to be over at first base. Maybe Nick Morabito in the outfield. Who knows? Maybe it's Morabito and center, Benjen Wright and Christopher Morale and left. Wouldn't be surprised if we saw that alignment once again. So we'll see how the match go about it.
