POSTCAST: Mets POWER Their Way To Series Opening Win Vs. Giants

About this episode

Behind five home runs, the New York Mets scored 10 runs in back to back games for the first time this season and opened their series against the San Francisco Giants with a win.

Another huge night for the Mets with the bats, getting started early with seven runs over the first two innings. Francisco Lindor, Bo Bichette and Mark Vientos all went yard with homers and Francisco Alvarez added two homers of his own.

Pitching wise, Nolan McLean wasn't super sharp but still was able to go six innings, allow just two runs and pick up his 11th win of the season.

POSTCAST host Chris Schubert breaks down all the action.

And the push for Nolan McLean as the NL rookie of the year continues. Welcome into the Metz postcast here live on the Lockdown Metz YouTube channel, the Lockdown Metz podcast feed. Your postcast host Chris Schubert here with you all throughout the Metz season recapping all of the action the moment the game gets done and the Metz have themselves a small winning streak. Nolan McLean wasn't super sharp. We'll put together a great night and the Metz powered their way to victory. We'll talk about it all and get a little breadcrumb about a future roster move tonight. Robert Stock in the game that that tells that gives us a little hint as to what will happen early next week. Today's postcast is brought to you by Fandall.

College football Saturdays are already packed with reasons to get excited. And this season Fandall is giving fans even more ways to get in on every matchup. All the action at fandall.com. We will get in on the action from tonight's game as the Metz powered themselves to victory five home runs tonight. This is what you'll be talking about. Francisco Lendor with a no doubt or Mark Vientos with a homer, boba, shit with a with a moonshot. That thing got out of here in a hurry and Francisco Alvarez starting September. Off on a nice note with two home runs tonight in the series. The Metz hit five home runs in this game and they powered themselves to this victory. Seven runs in the first two innings. Vientos with the homer in the first Alvarez and Bichette both home are in the second. And Nolan McLean a stake to a very early seven nothing lead.

And just two days removed from the Metz scoring 10 runs in the finale of the series against Tampa. They do it again here against the Giants team against the pitching staff that you should be able to put up these crooked numbers. Nine hits 10 RBI the Metz also drew four walks in this game did a really nice job of getting base traffic. And they got some guys boba sheds finished in the year got into the top 10 in the NL in hits. He goes yard Alvarez trying to forget about that month of of August with two home runs tonight. Francisco Lendor with a two hit game hit from each side of the plate including that homer. He's trying to finish what has been a very up and down season. Missed a ton of time. He's trying to finish that on a good note. Let's talk about Mark Vientos while we're while we're here because. Look every time I'm out Mark Vientos does something to pull me back in right. I'm sure that's how you feel about Mark Vientos. This felt like a very do or die maker break season four mark in many ways.

Getting the opportunities at first base getting opportunities to D H getting opportunities to play and to try to take hold of a starting role with this Metz team and he just really hasn't been able to channel the the 2024 season where he hit those 27 homers nearly had 80 RBI's hit 266 was one of the Metz best players was a huge clutch hitter in the postseason hitting big home runs against Philly hit a big grand slam against the Dodgers and that's what he has been chasing since 2024 and since coming back from his rehab assignment where he hit three home runs in his final minor league rehab assignment game down in Syracuse. He has hit two home runs in the four games that he has played and he has been at the center of a lot of the Metz offense right played in all three games of the race series started one who came off the bench in in the other got the start tonight in this one and was able to go two for four and drove in three more runs so he is really swinging a hot bat and we'll see the Metz

are going to have a ton of roster decisions to make at the end of this season and Mark Vientos is going to be at the top of the list so perhaps he can force it to be a difficult conversation by continuing to swing as hot of a bat as he has swung since coming back and look this Metz team not in it right we keep saying this give opportunities give chances this could be last chance saloon for Mark Vientos in many ways i'm okay with them running him out there and seeing what he's able to provide here at the tail end of this season and he did it in a big way tonight with those three RBI's Francisco Alvarez producing at the bottom of the lineup Carson Benj with a hit in this game he had four Metz with multi hit games but Shatt Lendor Vientos and Alvarez so all the guys that went yard in this game they they had multi hit performances and just picking up right where this team left off in Tampa and starting this series off with a nice win. Nolma Klein was on the mound tonight trying to continue to make a push for the National League rookie of the year

it is a late charge he is trying to chase down perhaps his own teammate in Carson Benj he's also trying to chase down Sal Stewart who's putting together a fantastic rookie campaign will break down McLean's performance picking up his 11th big league win the bullpen code isango was great and we saw Robert Stock come out of the bullpen i thought that was an important note as well so we'll talk about it all here in just a second. A big thank you to our friends at amazon for this limited break this back to school season spend less on your kids with amazon we all know how crazy the back to school shopping experience can be starts with just a few items on the list and then suddenly your shopping for supplies close lunch gear tech and about 10 other things you didn't see coming it adds up fast when you buy clothes for back to school then your kid has a growth spurt two weeks later right back where you started sometimes it genuinely feels like they're growing faster than your budget can keep up you start shopping for a fuel back to school essentials and you realize

how quickly that list can grow supplies close lunch gear headphones it just keeps going that's why finding low prices on all the things you need make such a big difference this time of year so remember with amazon's low back to school prices just spend less on your kids because every dollar you don't spend on them is a dollar you haven't spent on them shop back to school at amazon and spend less on your kids back here on the Metz postcast live on the locked on metz youtube channel the locked on metz podcast feed christ shubbered here with you the metz putting together a little bit of a winning streak here to in a row after winning the finale of the series in Tampa to get a series win and now opening it up with 10 runs and a win in this series against the giants 20 runs in their last two games are really nice to see the bats do their part the exciting part of this series for the Metz nolemoclean christian scott zack thorton gonna see all three of the metz young starters the

future of this metz rotation in very many ways the present of this metz rotation going to see it this weekend a one after the other after the other other against the giants and mcclean was up tonight trying to continue to make that push to make it a little bit more challenging for those voters for the national league rookie of the year to decide between south steward and nolemoclean i'll give you the numbers and then we'll break it down because i think nolem did a great job of making these final numbers look the way that they did six innings the six hits two earn runs four walks seven strikeouts for mcclean that eRA still sitting at 306 for the season after tonight picking up his eleventh win of the season and the first two innings did look like nolemoclean was going to be settling in for a nice night rocking up a bunch of strikeouts and putting up a bunch of heroes and and really making that push to south steward and to the national league rookie of the year and then staked to a seven nothing lead and it feels like that almost did mcclean a disservice it almost felt like he kind of took his foot off the gas a little bit and i don't have social media

up but i can we i've been listening to Andy green enough since taking over as the interim manager for the metz i could hear him in the middle of the game i could hear the post game press conference where he talks about how mcclean's got to reach that next level he can't take his foot off the gas when he staked to a big lead right the way he's pushed christian scott the way he's pushed zack thorton a j u in carcin bench all these young guys he's pushed nolem at times right nolem's let out those big screams in big moments and then is giving up runs right after and Andy green says we got to channel that emotional a little better you saw that emotion again tonight i could hear Andy green talk about how your staked to a seven nothing lead you got to push the pedal to the metal you got to go out there and have that great follow up inning and mcclean didn't he gave up those two runs in the third was missing a lot to the arm side so you sought early even in that first inning when he put up a zero he had all those lefties you had Gilbert you had devours you had eldridge clearly the game plan was we're going to keep the ball away from these guys try to hit it on the ground he was even thrown it's change up early in this game to try to get them the roll over

on it right i think you threw one to devours in the second at bat of the game and he just couldn't refine that command and we know the sweepers kind of been removed from the repertoire right now and he's just been throwing that curve ball and the sinker was really good he did still end up with seven strikeouts in this game got a lot of of strikeout looking got some good swings on that sinker especially to the lefties starting it out there hip running it back in he was elevating that pitch two to the top of the zone to really kind of get them off balance not a pitch that they were expecting and and this is where you start talking about the potential greatness of somebody like a nolem McLean right because he is able to not have his best stuff he is able to not have the grade a sinker fastball off speed stuff but he's still able to grind it out he is still able to give you a quality start go six innings give up just two earn runs i'm surprised he went out there for the six thinning the broadcast was surprised he went out there for the six thinning i mean he was at 94 pitches 96 pitches after the fifth you thought laid in the season a rookie pitcher

right only his second technically big league season it's the end of the year you're just trying to get to the end here and make sure everybody's healthy into the off season get ready for 2027 right you're not trying to push too much but Andy green this is the reason why he's in charge of player development he oversees all of this he knew i'm going to push this guy this is a chance to this is one of those it's a low risk environment we're not playing important games in September push him here so that when it is an important game in September next year in 27 in 28 and 29 this kid's going to be ready to deliver for this team and you saw the emotion when he got that final out in that six thinning to deliver a quality start the four walks were a problem again McLean McLean was not great tonight but he still was able to grind it out and give the match quality and then you turned it over to the bullpen Austin Warren kind of struggled in this one and then we saw Robert stock and and this is this was the giveaway the that's gave away the game tonight there was a lot of reports a lot of rumors that sooner rather than later we were going to see Jonah Tom well Robert stock spot in the rotation was due to come up in this Miami series and so

Robert stock hadn't been used as a reliever since being called up by the metsy's been a starter he's had a spot in the rotation they've been taking turn after turn after turn which is a couple days ago right five and a third scoreless his first big lead wins since 2019 we talked about it on the post cast it was a it was a great time lining it up for him to make his next start now all of a sudden to open up a series against San Francisco there he is out there and he is coming out of the bullpen and gets it out I think that tells you where Jonah Tom is going to fit in that he is going to as the reports have indicated make that make that start in the series or at least play some role in that series against Miami and we'll get the we'll get the C Jonah here down the stretch who's really turned a corner down in Syracuse last month or so it's kind of found it a little bit so hoping that you can give him three four starts at the end of the season to see what you have before turning the page to 2027 so they kind of gave it away by by putting stock in there that kind of told you where the meds are at with Jonah Tom and what their plan is for that series against Miami it doesn't go down as a save because it's a four run game but

Koda's saying with another scoreless outing he's been really good since coming into this role as the closer did allow a walk in this one but worked around it since becoming a reliever or since post trade deadline where he was thrusted into this high leverage situation he's high leverage roles he's pitched 11 innings 11 and third two on runs and he's been really good really really good and I didn't think I would say that about anything that Koda's saying it did this season with how bad it was at times but you put him in these environments where he can just be a one inning guy he can let it rip he can just try to throw that fastball as hard as possible be a two-pitch pitcher when you're a starter and you got to see guys multiple times you can't just be a one trick or a two trick pony right you gotta have different options you gotta have a Swiss army knife of solutions to be able to throw at these guys whereas as a reliever you're gonna see guys and you may not see them again in that series just depending on when you come in you're not gonna pitch all three days of a series the odds that you see the same spot in the lineup twice

is not always gonna be the case so you can just let it rip with your two-grade a pitches in that fastball with the elevated velocity is a great a pitch when you can locate it and that fork ball is his outpitch when everything is working so not a save tonight he is five or five and save opportunities he only threw 10 pitches tonight so hopefully the Mets will have him at some point in this series whether it is tomorrow or on Sunday to try to make sure they lock themselves up a series win but again he has been solid really solid since being put into this role Austin Warren we mentioned the struggles tonight Jeffrey Jan got got you two outs and they lifted him for Warren to get the match up he did give up a run but McLean was great and when I say great he just battled right and and that's what you love out of your out of your star pitcher where he doesn't have his best off buddy battles and the story continues to be that this Mets offense the last couple days has been really really good I mean 20 runs in two games five homeers tonight Mark Fientos continues to be hot Francisco Alvarez starting September off on a good note just

just a great way on WWE night at the ballpark they they slammed the San Francisco Giants they bodies slammed them early in this game almost landing the knockout punch with those seven runs in the first two innings unfortunately the Giants were able to kind of make this a game and put you on the edge of your seat late but really nice for the Mets to pick up this win they will go for the series win tomorrow it will be Zach Thornton making the start so as we mentioned all three of the Mets young starters getting the call here in this series it will be Zach Thornton making another start and this is not a team I think he has seen this season no not a team that he has seen this season so we'll see five innings the two on runs his last time out I'm sure he will want to try to go deeper into a game and speaking of going deeper into a game credit to Nolan McLean because you thought there for a second he wasn't going to be able to to get the six innings which has kind of been his calling card here as of late really has turned a corner and is given the Mets length and he was able to

go six innings tonight so that is I can do some math that is five consecutive starts where he is gone at least six innings and since June 17th only one time has he failed to go six innings and that was against Cleveland so if you if you'll bear with me that's three in the end of June that's five in July that's eight five in August that's 13 tonight is 14 so in 14 starts 13 of the last 14 he's gone at least six innings so we've asked for this for years can we get Mets starters to go deeper into games can we make it where six innings is the norm Nolan McLean is ending the season doing just that so great way to start this series for the Mets and hopefully they can continue to carry this momentum into this series tomorrow that is going to do it for us here on the Mets postcast thanks for hanging out with us hit that subscribe button turn on the notification bell so that you are notified when we go live tomorrow right after the game to break down the second game of this series five home

10 runs and back to back games a battle a grind but ultimately a good start for Nolan McLean and the Mets have themselves a two game winning streak until next time have a good one Mets fans the best time to recommit to your gut health goals right now take charge of your good with nature made are clinically studied ingredients support digestive health digestive enzymes breakdown nutrients probiotic and prebiotic fiber nourished good gut bacteria and super greens with probiotics empowered daily digestive health try to full line up of gut health support from nature made the number one pharmacist recommended vitamin and supplement brand he statements of not being evaluated by the food and drug administration these products are not intended to diagnose treat cure or prevent any disease in the fight against Alzheimer's now matters more than ever because now we have treatments treatments that could change everything but now is no time to stop now we've got momentum so now we use it now we seize the moment now we turn the tide now we make a difference and make some
